Maggie  (Marsha) L. Miller, 65, of Batavia passed away on Sunday June 8, 2014 at Strong Memorial Hospital. She was born on August 29, 1948 in Batavia to Edward A. Miller of Batavia and the late Hazel May (Kelsey) Miller. She is preceded in death by her brother Russ Miller.

Maggie, a gypsy woman who wore that badge with honor, marching through life to the beat of several different drums. The one with the deepest, truest tone was the one that held her love and pride of family. Starting with her parents that she came home to care for.  The siblings that she admired for who they were, and the many nieces and nephews that she would cheer on, through their accomplishments, even if it was just through her Facebook page. Then there were her girls, that’s what she called us, her girls, no matter what we did. It took a long time to travel back down that road, but her girls were who she loved and admired most. With them came the next generations of love, trust and acceptance. Her love did not end with people, it reached out further and deeper. When you’re a woman of such insight, strength, and knowledge how can it be contained? It showed in her love for animals, especially horses, dogs and cats. Her love of nature and the peace that flowed just by being still, but also in the thunder that rolled when passions flew when she faced down adversity, in defense of a belief or someone she loved. She stood for her convictions and made no apologies for them, always holding true to herself. There will always be coffee ready for you. We love you Mom.

Maggie is survived by her daughters Cerrie (Anthony) LaPlante of VA,  Amy Connolly of East Bethany, S. Michelle (Doug) Connolly-Kelly of VA, Tammy (Kevin) Sandeen of MI; former husband twice over Bruce S. Connolly of LeRoy; best friend for over two decades Walter “Skeeter” Blatt of Batavia; brothers Roger (Judy) Miller of VA, Greg (Ann) Miller of East Bethany, Jeff Miller of FL, Paul (Sherri) Miller of Alexander and sisters Paula (George) Miller-Schaefer of VA, Vicki (Jeff) Wolak of East Bethany,  Belinda (Rick) Miller-Cox of East Bethany; 20 grandchildren, 9 ½ great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.  

There will be no prior calling hours. A memorial barbeque will be held on July 12, 2014.  Location and time are to be determined at a later date.

East Bethany - John Douglas “Jack” Moodie, age 87, of East Bethany, passed away on Friday, August 3, 2018 at LeRoy Village Green Nursing Facility, in LeRoy with his loving family by his side.

Mr. Moodie was born August 17, 1930 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, the son of the late Douglas Anderson Moodie and Mabel King Moodie.

He is predeceased by his daughter, Maureen Moodie and his sister, Eleanor Urban.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Joan Topham Moodie; his children, John Moodie of Albany, David (Michele) Moodie of Dansville, Russell (Ellen) Moodie of Webster, Mark Moodie of Conesus, Joanne (John) Holler of Vermont and Robert (Vinci) Moodie of Gates; 15 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Moodie served in the United States Marine Corps from 1951-1953. He was a partner in Jay Cee Construction and then owner of J D Moodie Construction building many homes and commercial buildings in Western New York during the 1950's-1970's. A True Jack of all Trades he later worked for The Harris Corporation, Carlson Co., and then ultimately retired from Bausch & Lomb.

Jack and Joan traveled throughout the United States in their camper during retirement and when they stopped traveling, Jack became a volunteer at Crossroads House in Batavia and then delivered Meals on Wheels well into his 80's.

The family would like to thank the staff at LeRoy Village Green for their excellent care and compassion given to Jack and his family in the last few weeks.

Friends may call on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Mary Immaculate Parish, 5865 Ellicott Street Road, East Bethany.  Burial, with military honors, will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Batavia.

Elizabeth, CO - Joseph P. Strogen, 92, of Elizabeth, CO, and formerly of Batavia, passed away Sunday, (January 19, 2014) at his daughter’s home , in Colorado. 

Mr. Strogen was born March 19, 1921 in Batavia, a son of the late John and Mary (Meterko) Strogen.

Joe served his country honorably during World War II. 

Mr. Strogen was a former employee of Batavia Metal Products and Doehler-Jarvis in Batavia prior to moving to California in 1963.  There he worked into his 70s as a machinist with Lockheed Martin, GSR Sloan Co., and Flo Control.  In his later years he worked to design and maintain machinery for plastic pipe fittings. 

He greatly enjoyed traveling with his wife, baseball, fishing, and hunting.  He was also an avid reader. 

Joeseph was a member of the Moose Lodge in Batavia and Warsaw, the VFW and the American Legion.

He is the husband of the late Elva (Hyde) Strogen who passed away in January 2004.

Surviving are his children, Paul D Strogen of Daly City, CA, James A. (Virginia) Strogen of Sun Rise Beach, MO, and Mylynne (Wayne) Austgen of Elizabeth, CO; grandchildren, Jeffrey and Darin Strogen of MN, Eric Austgen of Elizabeth, CO, Rachel Hurst of Aurora, CO, Susan Austgen of Elizabeth, CO, and Jim Wolford of PA.  12 great-grandchildren also survive.

Joseph is preceded in death by his siblings, Frank, Jean and Helen.

There will be no prior visitation.  Graveside services will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, (June 28, 2014) at West Bethany Cemetery, Brown Road, Bethany.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crossroads House, P.O. Box 403, Batavia, NY 14021.
