National Grid reported as many six power outages in Genesee County this morning affecting fewer than two dozen customers.

There was a larger outage -- more than 300 customers -- in Wyoming County with an affected area that stretches just into Pavilion and an outage effecting six customers in Attica

Charles L. Rieks

Charles L. Rieks, 74, of Greeneville, TN and Orange Park, FL passed away Thursday, April 20, 2017.  He was born July 6, 1942 in Warsaw, NY to the late Harvey and Edith Brower Rieks.
Mr. Rieks graduated from Pavilion Central School.  He worked at Caledonia Bean Plant, Rochester Telephone Company and retired from Amtote International of Hunt Valley, MD.  He worked in Buffalo, Batavia and Canandaigua before transferring to Jacksonville/Orange Park, FL.
Charles was a life member of Pavilion Fire Department and was instrumental in helping to establish the Pavilion Rescue Squad.  He was also an American Legion member.  He was a veteran of the US Army having served from 1961-1967.
Mr. Rieks is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nancy (Smith) Rieks of Greeneville, TN; son Daniel (Lisa) Rieks of Batavia, NY; daughters, Roseann (Doug) Harris of Greeneville, TN, and Kelly (Daniel) Cordell of Stafford, NY; 6 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Cotton of Greenville, TX; sisters-in-law, Lorraine (J.E.) Rieks of Silver Spring, MD, Judy (Nick) Cecci of Corning, NY and Patricia (Robert) Murphy of Wyoming, NY; brother-in-law, Gary Phillips of Attica, NY, step-brothers, Robert and Donald Hammond of Rochester, NY; many nieces and nephews; and a very special family friend, Brad Skwirsk.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Edgar (Ed) Rieks.
Services will be held at a later date at East Bethany Rural Cemetery in East Bethany, NY. Memorial contributions can be made to Pavilion Fire Department, P.O. Box 156; Pavilion, New York 14525.

Doris B. "Midge" McKenzie, 71, of Wyoming, NY, died Monday, (February 7, 2011) at United Memorial Medical Center.

She was born in Wyoming, NY on April 14, 1939, a daughter of the late Walter Sr. and Carol Cook Mooney. 

She was a seamstress at Angelica Textile Services in Batavia prior to her retirement.  She was an accomplished oil paint artist and seamstress.  She also enjoyed reading, wood working and crocheting.

Surviving is an adopted son, Bruce (Jennifer) Johnson of Leicester, NY, a sister, Joan A. "Judy" Maniace of Batavia, a brother, Walter "Butch" Mooney of Wyoming, NY.  Several nieces and nephews.  Her step children, Theresa (John) Summers of Corfu, Deborah A (Rick) Hagen of Pavilion, Kathy (Chris) Livermore of Stafford, Eileen (Robert) Ostrander of Oakfield, Barbie (Dan) Koladzinski of Batavia and Patrick (Jennie) Hart of LeRoy.   A step brother, Roland (Marilyn) Glosser Jr. of Warsaw, step sisters, Judy (Henry) Harrison of Rochester, Beth (John) Hicks of Henderson, NY, Janette Hart of Vermont, Mickie Hart of Rochester, Rev. Edward (Lorraine) Hart of Vermont, Gerald Hart and Peter Hart both of California. Several grandchildren and one great grand daughter.

She is the mother of the late Steven, Thomas and Bethany.  Aunt of the late, Matthew Mooney and  great aunt of the late Eric Mooney.  Step daughter of the late Roland Glosser Sr. and long timer partner of the late David Hart.

Visitation will be Thursday from 4 - 8PM at the J. LEONARD MCANDREW FUNERAL HOME, LLC., 2 BOGUE AVE., BATAVIA, where services will be Friday (Feb. 11, 2011) at 1PM. 

Memorials may be made to the family.

Burial will be in Morganville Cemetery.

Doris R. Gibney

Doris R. Gibney, 88 of Perry, died December 12, 2011 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. She was born in East Bethany, NY on July 6, 1923 to the late Walter (Matilda McLernon) Robinson. Mrs. Gibney taught 3rd grade at the Perry Elementary School for many years. She was a member of the Brick Presbyterian Church in Perry and the Eastern Star. Mrs. Gibney was a caring, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and was well-liked by all she knew. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband James S. Gibney (2008), brother Hugh Robinson and sister Alice Zangerle. 

She is survived by  her son David (Rita) Gibney of MD; daughters Ann (Peter) Straub of Thailand; Jane (Robert) Parker of Perry; sister Sarah Hammond of Mt. Morris, 9 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Friday December 16, 2011 at the Eaton-Watson Funeral Home, LLC. 98 N. Main St. Perry, NY 14530. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 AM on January 7, 2012 at the Brick Presbyterian Church 6 Church St. Perry, New York 14530. Interment will be in the Glenwood Cemetery in Perry.

John D. "Jack" McCarthy

  John D. “Jack” McCarthy, 86, of Alexander passed away peacefully on Friday April 21, 2017 at the United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia. He was born in Dansville on January 29, 1931 to the late John M. and Ethel (Blausius) McCarthy. In addition to his parents, Jack is predeceased by his brother William Schaff and grandson David McCarthy.

Jack was a United States Army Veteran. He was employed with the New York State Department of corrections working at The Attica Correctional Facility for many years and then at Albion from where he retired. After retirement he moved with his wife to Orlando and worked with the Orange County Sheriff's Department for 10 more years. Jack loved to fish and hunt and spent many happy hours in those pursuits. More than these though he loved his family. He married the love of his life in September 1955 and they spent 62 years together. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren. Jack was a great storyteller and enjoyed when the family would gather together and he kept them laughing with his stories. In his later years he loved to hold his great-grandchildren and there were many people, both family and friends who called him “Grandpa Jack”.  Jack was a lifetime member of the Alexander Fire Department, a member of the VFW Joseph Collins post 6239 and the American Legion in Attica.

He is survived by his loving wife; Mary Ellen McCarthy; children Michael (Mary) McCarthy of Batavia, Marlene (Stefan) Worthington of Alexander, Lorrie (Jim) Gammack of Darien Center, Noreen (Mike) Gaiser of E. Bethany and Amy (Mike) Shaw of Alexander; 27 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

A 10:00AM Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday the 26th at the Alexander United Methodist Church 10540 Main St. Alexander, NY 14005. Jack will be laid to rest in Ossian Center Cemetery.
