Tompkins Financial welcomes Rebecca McGee as Employee Experience Team Lead, Human Resources

An expansion of its internal workforce, Tompkins Financial Corporation has welcomed Rebecca McGee as an employee experience team lead in its human resources department. McGee, who brings 16 years of experience to her new role, will support the financial institutions’ existing teams within Tompkins Financial Advisors and Tompkins Insurance Agencies.

“Rebecca has established herself as a dedicated professional, demonstrating her commitment to quality, efficiency and symbiotic employee relationships throughout her career,” said Stacie Mastin, senior vice president, director of human resources. “Her extensive experience and the values she holds are paramount and will undoubtedly make her an asset to our organization.”

A graduate of Plattsburgh State University, McGee holds a Professional Human Resources (PHR) Certification, Society of Human Relations Management Professional Certification (SHRM-PC) and a LEGO Serious Play Facilitator, in addition to her bachelor’s degree. 

Before joining Tompkins, McGee was the director of human resources for the City of Batavia, New York. An active member of her community, McGee serves as a board member for Rochester Regional Health United Memorial Medical Center and the Business Education Alliance (BEA) and volunteers with Leadership Genesee and the Genesee Area Personnel Association.

Currently, McGee resides in Batavia with her husband, Patrick.

Healthy Living Campus to open December 9

The GLOW YMCA in collaboration with Rochester Regional Health (RRH) is excited to announce the grand opening dates for Batavia’s new Healthy Living Campus. The new 78,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility will offer everything from primary care and exercise studios, to cancer screening, nutrition education services, recreation and multi-use spaces for all ages under one roof.

Rochester Regional Health’s new Batavia Primary Care will be open on December 9, 2024. RRH providers will use this space to offer primary care and telemedicine appointments, behavioral health and crisis intervention support, cancer prevention outreach, chronic illness, and community education services.

The Genesee County YMCA will open its doors on January 2, 2025. This new state-of-the-art facility is here to serve the community, offering top-of-the-line fitness equipment, a beautiful aquatic center, an indoor walking track and a variety of family-friendly spaces and activities.

Genesee County law enforcement joins statewide STOP-DWI campaign to combat impaired driving during Thanksgiving

Genesee County Sheriff’s Office and the Le Roy Police Department will be participating in a coordinated effort with the Genesee County STOP-DWI program this week to bring awareness to the dangers of impaired driving.

Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel times of the year, and unfortunately more people on the roadways means the potential for more vehicle crashes. In a combined effort to bring awareness to the dangers of impaired driving, prevent injuries and save lives law enforcement officers across New York State and STOP-DWI programs will be participating in special engagement efforts. 

The statewide STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign start on Wednesday, November 27 and will end on Sunday, Dec. 1.

While STOP-DWI efforts across New York State have led to significant reductions in the numbers of alcohol and drug related fatalities, still too many lives are being lost because of crashes caused by drunk or impaired drivers. Highly visible, highly publicized efforts like the STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign aim to further reduce the incidence of drunk and impaired driving.

Designate a driver. Don’t let alcohol take the wheel.

Let the Holidays begin! Christmas in the City is Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024, from 2 to 6 p.m. in Downtown Batavia. Our local shops and organizations will be offering holiday specials and family fun activities. 

Events held in the mall will go from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and include "Our Hometown Craft Show," Pictures
with Santa and so much more. 

Stay downtown, take a carriage ride, listen to carolers, and see what all of our businesses have to offer. You won’t want to miss the Holiday Parade down Main Street starting at 6 p.m. More than 1,000 people pack the streets of Downtown every year for this great event as it kicks our community into the holiday season.

We would love to invite you to be a part of this year’s event. There are several opportunities to participate:

  • Enter your business or group into the Holiday Parade. Parade participants can walk or drive a vehicle or float decorated for the holiday season. We ask that no one puts a Santa on their float, as he has already committed to the event.

Annual Service of Prayer & Remembrance to support grieving families December 4

H.E. Turner & Co., Bohm-Calarco-Smith, and Burdett & Sanford Funeral Homes proudly present their 29th Annual Service of Prayer & Remembrance at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 4, at the Northgate Free Methodist Church, 8160 Bank Street Road in Batavia.

For those who wish to participate from home, we will live stream the service as well.

“We hear from families how the service helps them through their grief, especially during this time of year," said Joshua Smith, of H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home. "For some of these families, it will be their first year participating in the service, which means it is their first Christmas without their loved one, and for others, they come back year after year.”

A candle in memory of your loved one will be lit prior to the start of the service and remain that way throughout.

One candle will be provided per deceased loved one and will be given to participants at the service. If you choose not to attend but would still like a candle to participate from home, please call our office to arrange a pick-up.

Call 585-344-4295 to reserve your candle by Sunday, December 1. There is no cost for a candle, and all who experienced the pain of loss are welcome to participate regardless of which funeral home arranged services for their loved one.

The ecumenical service will combine music, prayer, scripture reading, reading of the names of loved ones, the tolling of the bell in remembrance, and a message of hope by Reverend John Keller.

Lady Irish basketball hosts 3rd annual Golisano Toy Drive, fundraiser game December 12

The Lady Irish Basketball Program is hosting its 3rd Annual Golisano Toy Drive to benefit the children who are in the hospital and cannot be home for the holidays. 

The toy drive will conclude with the Notre Dame vs. Oakfield game at ND on December 12. At this game, there will be basket raffles, 50/50s as well as toy donations to contribute to the children in need. 

Anyone from the community who would like to donate can do so at the ND Main Office during regular school hours.

This past summer, Elba Central School’s Class of 2025 and Boys Baseball team helped clean up cans and bottles after each Rockin’ The Downs show. They earned $1,031.80 by returning the recyclables they gathered to McNickel’s Bottle and Can Redemption.

Batavia Downs Gaming & Hotel matched that and added $500 for also helping picking up trash and chairs throughout the concert season for a grand total of $2,563.60!

UConnectCare invites recovery community to ‘Friendsgiving’ and Santa Claus events

UConnectCare is looking to make the holiday season – starting with two “Friendsgiving” activities in Batavia next week – a special one for the recovery community in Genesee and Orleans counties.

The Recovery Station at 5256 Clinton St. Rd. and the agency’s childcare center at 14 Harvester Ave. will be hosting events from 2  to 5 p.m. on November 27 to give adults and children the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving a day ahead of the actual holiday.

“Both of these events are designed to build a whole family of support by offering those in recovery the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends in a relaxed atmosphere,” said Melissa Vinyard, TRS coordinator. “Anyone who wants to attend is welcome.”

Vinyard said free food and refreshments will be available, with the menu featuring chicken wing dip, meatballs, taco dip, spinach dip, banana pudding, and an assortment of pies.

Jessica Budzinack, UConnectCare’s coordinator of Outreach and Family Support Program, said adults with children can drop off the kids at the childcare house on Harvester Avenue if they wish to attend the adult gathering at TRS.

“We’re calling it ‘Friendsgiving for Kiddos’ at the childcare center and it is open to all children of our clients in Genesee and Orleans, even if parents will not be attending at The Recovery Station,” she said.

Budzinack said children attending will make placemats for their Thanksgiving dinner, be treated to “candy salad and real food, too” and sing and dance along with singer/musician Bart Dentino, a UConnectCare employee.

“Each child will receive a school vacation care package containing snacks, drinks and a surprise to enjoy with their parents,” she added.

The childcare session will be supervised by Elizabeth Wilson, Parent & Family Relationship peer coach, along with staffers Kallie Totten and Tonya Arnold.

A NIGHT WITH SANTA & MRS. CLAUS

On December 4, TRS will be hosting “A Night with Santa & Mrs. Claus” from 5 to 8 p.m.

Attendees can choose to have their picture taken with the Christmas “royal couple” at no charge and will be offered the chance to craft a unique frame for the picture. Cookies and cocoa will be served and all children will receive a Christmas storybook as a gift.

Both the “Friendsgiving” at the childcare house and “A Night with Santa & Mrs. Claus” are partially funded by the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, Budzinack said.

“We are grateful to the foundation for helping us to support parents and their children in recovery,” she said. “Throughout the year, we schedule different events where parents in recovery can get together with other parents in recovery and their children to do things that normally they wouldn’t be able to do on their own. This builds the recovery community for parents and the children.”

She said that UConnectCare staff helps participants build parenting skills and provides the resources that they need to parent effectively and to navigate through any legal issues.

“We also supply care packages to parents with food insecurities while their kids are in school and offer fun things they can do together as a family to strengthen family bonds,” she said.

Genesee Society of Model Engineers to host 22nd holiday open house December 7

Breast Cancer Coalition event at Batavia Downs Raises $25K

Western Regional Off Track Betting (WROTB) President and CEO Byron Brown presented representatives from the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester (BCCR) with a check for $25,215.30 to help those who been affected by breast or gynecologic cancer.

On September 27, a dinner and night at the races fundraiser with raffles to benefit the BCCR was held inside the Batavia Downs Clubhouse. Businesses and donors located in Western NY sponsored several races that night. Some monies came from the local harness racing community as some owners, trainers and drivers donated all or a portion of their earnings from the night to the BCCR. Through the dinner, donations, raffles and auctions for items, the event raised $25,213.30.

“I'm honored, along with the Batavia Downs Board of Directors,  to present a check of over $25,000 to the Breast Cancer Coalition,” Brown said. “Breast Cancer Awareness Month just concluded in October but our focus should be year around with more than 360,000 people diagnosed with breast cancer this year alone. Early detection is critically important because - so the quicker you act the bigger the impact.”

GO ART! hosts exhibition reception featuring Ryan Gaebler’s fine art collection Thursday

GO ART! is pleased to welcome the public to view the fine art collection of Ryan Gaebler at an exhibition reception on Thursday, November 21.

Ryan grew up in Pavilion and was influenced by his parent's love for antiquing. They would often explore auctions, yard sales, and thrift stores together in search of hidden treasures. 

One particular childhood memory that stands out for Ryan is when he was eight years old. He spent a night in a camper and woke up the next morning to set up his stand at a flea market, showcasing and selling baseball and football cards - a hobby he would continue for many years. 

In 2006, Ryan relocated to Batavia, and in 2011, another nostalgic memory of visiting flea markets with his parents in his youth was triggered by a visit to a small flea market at the Fairgrounds in Batavia, where he met Dave Thompson; an encounter that would significantly help to guide his path into the world of collecting, and played a pivotal role in his career as a fine arts collector.

Dave Thompson sold different kinds of art, antiques, and glassware. 

Ryan said “I bought a couple of nice paintings from him for $15-$20 apiece. I saw the beauty in them! I started going back week after week talking to Dave. He told me about some of the local artists to look for and I started going to Bontrager’s Auction and other types of sales looking for these artists. One of the first pieces I found was a RW Ware drawing at Bontrager’s.”

We could assume that Ryan's journey into the world of art collecting reached a significant milestone in 2013 when he participated in his first antique show and sold three RW Ware paintings to Jim Owen.

We invite you to see the impressive collection featuring artists such as Roy Mason, and RW Ware, meet Ryan during the reception, and hear more about the journey that got him to the place of a successful fine art collector this Thursday, November 21, starting at 5 p.m.(Ryan’s talk at 6 p.m).

Batavia Downs donates more than $9K to Make-a-Wish from Summer Concert series chair rental

Western Region Off Track Betting (WROTB) and Batavia Downs President and CEO Byron Brown was joined by staff from Make-A-Wish Western New York, as Batavia Downs Presented them with a check for  $9,310.  These proceeds were from this past summer’s Chair Rentals, Glow in the Dark Jewelry and Can Coolers sales at Batavia’s Rockin’ the Downs Outdoor Summer Concert Series.

“On behalf of the Batavia Downs Board of Directors, I want to recognize and thank the volunteers of Make of Wish Western New York for making this happen,” Brown said.  “Through their efforts over $9,300 was raised to help children with critical illnesses. Hopefully with the money raised another wish can come true.”

Throughout the 9 concerts of Batavia Downs’ Rockin’ The Downs Summer Concert Series, volunteers at the Make-A-Wish chair-rental booth rented out chairs and sold glow jewelry and Make  A Wish branded can coolers.  The chairs were adorned with the Make-A-Wish logo and the message:  The person sitting in this chair is helping to transform lives.

“Make-A-Wish is incredibly appreciative of our partnership with Batavia Downs for the “Rockin’ the Downs” Summer Concert Series to raise both awareness and crucial funds to help support children and families fighting critical illnesses, not only in the Batavia community but throughout this 17-county region,” said Ben Marchione, Regional Director, Make-A-Wish® Western New York.  “Thank you to all the concert goers who supported this year’s efforts and to Batavia Downs for making it possible. It is only through vitally important partnerships such as this that we are able to continue to serve our essential mission. We are very thankful for the opportunity.”

Wreaths Across America Day at WNY National Cemetery set for December 14

The Western New York National Cemetery will host its annual Wreaths Across America Day on December 14, beginning at 12 p.m. The event, which honors veterans by placing wreaths on their graves, is open to the public and aims to decorate over 2,000 headstones at the cemetery.

The ceremony will start at the Garrison Flag Pole at approximately noon, with the presentation of colors and wreaths laid by representatives of each military branch. The WNY National Cemetery Memorial Council will offer brief remarks, and the event will conclude with the playing of Taps.

Family and Community Wreath Laying

After the ceremony, family members of veterans laid to rest at the cemetery will have the opportunity from 12:20 to 12:25 p.m. to place wreaths on the graves of their loved ones. From 12:25 to 1:00 p.m., the community is invited to participate in the wreath-laying by placing one wreath at a time on the remaining 2,400 veteran headstones.

New Parking and Shuttle Service

This year, attendees will park at Pembroke High School, located at 8750 Alleghany Road, Corfu. Due to parking restrictions within the cemetery, buses will transport participants to and from the cemetery, which is about 2.3 miles away. Shuttle service will begin at 10:30 a.m. and continue until all attendees have returned to their vehicles. Two smaller buses will also provide transport within the cemetery for those who need assistance.

Handicap parking will be available inside the cemetery. However, parking will be prohibited along Indian Falls Road, Gabbey Road, and Route 77 on the day of the event.

Wreath Sales to Benefit Memorial Council

Wreaths can be purchased for $17 each, with $5 from each sale benefiting the WNY National Cemetery Memorial Council, which is responsible for maintaining the cemetery's Avenue of Flags and supporting the Honor Guard. Wreaths can be ordered online at wreathsacrossamerica.org/ny0368p or by mailing a check made payable to the Pembroke Veterans Outreach Club, PO Box 308, Corfu.

Event Details

The WNY National Cemetery Memorial Council, a nonprofit organization, coordinates the event and encourages community participation. St. James Episcopal Church to host annual pie sale and basket raffle for Thanksgiving

St. James Episcopal Church is known for the wonderful desserts served for many years at Lenten Fish Fries. Those same bakers have been busy in the church kitchen making apple and pumpkin pies for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. Pre-order 9” homemade pies for $14 or
take your chances and stop in on Friday or Saturday during the basket raffle.

A variety of gift baskets have been assembled, including homemade quilts, Bridgerton Spa basket, lottery tree, books, and more. Tickets will be on sale throughout the event and you need not be present to win.

Dorian Ely, one of the organizers, said, “We are no longer doing fish fries, but the bakers are still going strong having made even more pies this year. Events like these help us with our outreach efforts including the street-front Blessing Box which provides non-perishable food and personal care products to the community; school supplies, winter hats and gloves for area children; dresses for girls in Uganda; humanitarian aid to Ukraine; and other efforts. We hope to see many of our neighbors coming in to purchase raffle tickets and a pie or two.”

The sixth annual Pie Sale and Basket Raffle will be held at St. James Church, 405 East Main Street, Batavia on Friday, November 22, from 4 - 6 p.m. and Saturday, November 23, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Jay Gsell to receive 39th Health and Humanitarian Award from The Jerome Foundation

The Board of Directors of The Jerome Foundation is pleased to announce that the recipient of the 39th Health and Humanitarian Award is Jay Gsell. 

This prestigious award recognizes volunteer men and women of Genesee County who have helped promote the emotional, physical and spiritual well-being of area residents.

In nominating Jay Gsell for the award, his neighbor James Patric notes “when we moved next door to Jay, he immediately came out of his house – introduced himself, welcomed us and said “how can I help?” So began a cherished friendship and our four children look forward to “Mr. Jay’s treats” left on the back steps. 

As a dedicated volunteer with Rotary, United Way, Salvation Army, GLOW with your hands, Premier Nursing Home, to name a few, Jay exemplifies the spirit of humanitarianism through his unwavering commitment to these causes. 

Chris Suozzi, GCEDC, adds “Jay is first to volunteer and assist us with GLOW with your hands and the Box Car Derby – events that support our community youth. He brings energy and enthusiasm which is unmatched”.

Fellow Rotarian Susie Ott states “Jay is someone who volunteers not for recognition but I think he deserves to be recognized for all that he does and the people he has helped during his living and working in our community.”

Mr. Gsell will be honored at a luncheon at Terry Hills Restaurant on Friday, December 6, at noon. Tickets are $30 per person.

HLOM announces 24th annual Wonderland of Trees opening gala, 'Gingerbread & Peppermint'

On November 22 at 6 p.m., the 24th Annual Wonderland of Trees at the Holland Land Office Museum (HLOM) will officially kick off with our opening gala!
