Dylan P. Stechenfinger

BATAVIA - Dylan P. Stechenfinger, 18, of Batavia, passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at at home in Batavia.

 

Dylan was born July 25, 2000, in Batavia, a son of Curt and Marie (Alexander) Stechenfinger.

 

He was a graduate of Batavia High School and had been working at Alpina Foods in Batavia for a short time.

 

Surviving along with his parents are 2 brothers, Colby Stechenfinger of Batavia and Matthew Pfalzer of Attica; and a sister, Jeana (Ben) Carlie of Byron.                      


There will be no visitation. ​Donald L. Dillon

Donald L. Dillon, 83, long time resident of Medina, entered into rest on Monday, January 7, 2019 peacefully at his residence at the Manor House in Batavia.
Born April 7, 1935 in Medina, Don was a son of the late Walter E.V. and Hazel L. (Harmer) Dillon.

He graduated from Medina High School in the class of 1952 and shortly after, married the former Geraldine “Gerry” Grimes. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Alfred State College. Mr. Dillon worked as Comptroller of Humanities in the library system at the University of Buffalo. He then was employed at the Albion Correctional Facility for many years and retired as a sergeant. He was a proud member of Council 82 N.Y.S. Law Enforcement Officers Union.  Mr. Dillon was a passionate reader, loved relaxing outdoors on his patio with his pets and was an avid fan of the Buffalo Bills.

Survivors include four children, Kenneth Dillon of Orlando, FL, Karen (Douglas) Siedenburg of Port Murray, NJ, Dawn (Richard) Stacey of Albion, James (Michelle) Dillon of Batavia and daughter in law, Karen (Greenland) Dillon (wife of Kimberly); eight grandchildren, Julie (Charles) Johnston, James (Kelly) Randall, Megan (Andrew) Surowiec, Rebecca (Gannon) Stacey, Richard Stacey, Aaron and Ryan Dillon; three great-grandchildren, Sean Fenton, Abigail Johnson and Juniper Randall; and his sister, Lois D. Morse.
Don was predeceased by his wife Gerry Dillon in 2010; an infant son, Donald Dillon; son, Kurt Dillon in 1965; son, Kimberly Dillon in 2015; grandson, Michael Dillon in 2011; and brother, Charles Dillon.

Calling hours will be held on January 26, from 1-4 p.m. at Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina. A private graveside committal service will be held in Boxwood Cemetery officiated by the Rev. Dr. William Wilkinson. Please share memories and condolences at www.cooperfuneralhome.com

Samuel Dean Fleming

Batavia - Samuel Dean Fleming, age 73, of Batavia, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at his home in Batavia.

Samuel was born March 29, 1945, in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Charles Dean Fleming and Nelle Eilene Fleming.

A member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Mr. Fleming worked at Lapp Insulator in LeRoy for over 35 years, retiring in 2007.

He is survived by his wife, Augustine Crimes Fleming; his son, James Fleming of Batavia; step-children,  Lisa Fleming of Batavia, Andrew Crimes of Batavia and Cynthia Crimes of Batavia; two sisters,  Mazie Vallies and Nancy Fleming, both of Shelocta, Pennsylvania; a cousin, Joe (Shirley) Brock and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.        

He is predeceased by his siblings, Mabel Fleming and Howard Fleming.

Friends may call on Friday from 1-2 p.m. at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 516 Ellicott Street, Batavia where his home-going service will follow at 2 p.m.with Rev. Emmanuel Duncan officiating. Margaret M. Schum

Margaret M. Schum, 78, of Attica, NY, passed away on January 5, 2019. She was born on February 28, 1940 to the late Joseph and the late Alice (Ryan) Buckley. She was predeceased by her husband, the late Edward Schum in 1980; her sister the late Rita Feeney; and her brothers, the late Paul Buckley, the late Robert Buckley, and the late James Buckley.

Margaret was a homemaker and a member of the Sts. Joachim & Anne Parish in Attica. She was also a member of the Attica American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Margaret is survived by three sisters, Mary Chase of Pennsylvania, Patricia (Paul) Lippold of Oakfield, and Josephine Lilja of Buffalo; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Buckley of Buffalo; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

There will be no prior visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11A.M. on Saturday at the Sts Joachim & Anne RC Church, 50 East Ave, Attica, NY 14011. Burial will follow in St Vincent’s Cemetery in Attica.

Marie E. Sztaba

Marie E. Sztaba, 96 of Corfu, passed away peacefully on Sunday (January 6, 2019) at LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home.

She was born July 24, 1922 in Pembroke, NY, a daughter of the late Clair and Alice Falker Higgins.

Marie and her husband operated a dairy farm together for many years.  Upon their retirement they enjoyed traveling in their RV, summers at Black Lake, NY fishing, and winters in Florida.  Upon her husband’s death Marie took up golf, enjoyed winters in Florida, and summers with her family and friends in the Batavia area.  Her golfing career of 19 years included 3 holes-in-one.  Marie also enjoyed trips to the casino.  At age 89 she sold her home in Florida and returned to the Batavia area.  She enjoyed family holidays and visits - the laughter they provided always made her smile.

She was predeceased by her husband, Victor Sztaba, daughter, Jean Tripp, brothers, Clair and Charles Higgins and sister, Jeannette Halat.

Survivors include two sons, Charles (Susan) Sztaba of Bergen and Richard (Linda) Sztaba of Batavia. Daughter, Maryann (David) Buelow of Batavia, OH. Several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Son in-law, Gary Tripp of Florida. Sister in-law, Mary Niecmski of Clarence. Also survived by nieces and nephews.

There will be no prior visitation. Family and friends are invited to share in her Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday (January 12th), 11:00am at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, 8656 Church St., East Pembroke, NY. Interment will be in St. Brigid Cemetery, Bergen, NY.

Brian R. Bower

A Memorial Service will be held for Dr. Brian R. Bower, Ed.D., on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. at The First Presbyterian Church of Le Roy, 7 Clay St., Le Roy, NY.

Dr. Bower, a 1953 graduate of Le Roy High School, passed away on Nov. 27, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roland and Vivian Bower; and brothers, Barry W. Bower, Bruce C. Bower, and Roland "Bud" Bower Jr.

Following 33 years of service in the New York State School System, Dr. Bower retired as the superintendent of the Mount Markham Central School District in West Winfield, NY.

Dr. Bower is survived by his wife, Katherine; sons, Scott (Debbie) Bower; Ken (Michelle) Bower; Keith (Melanie) Bower and daughter; Bonnie Springborn; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his sister Candace Bower, and brothers Robin (Mary) Bower and Craig (Patricia) Bower, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Following the service, refreshments will be served in the church's Olmstead Hall.

Kathryn (Nita) Fisher

Kathryn (Nita) Fisher was called home to be with her Lord and Savior suddenly on Sunday, January 6, 2019.  Nita was born Kathryn Waneta Kress in July 1927 in Des Moines, Iowa.  She became a registered nurse after high school and practiced her profession both full and part-time for a number of years.  She was wedded to her dear husband, Floyd for sixty-two years before his death in 2013.  Her eldest daughter, Marcia Pennell predeceased her in 2018 but she is survived by her two sons, Michael (Beth) and James (Connie), and her daughter Kathryn (Paul) Meloon.  She is also survived by nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.   Nita was a long-time member of West Somerset Baptist Church and enjoyed attending weekly right up until the time of her death.  She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, watching her birds, having tea and eating out with her friends, and spending time with all of her family.  Calling hours will be on Thursday (January 10) from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.at the West Somerset Baptist Church, 1876 Hosmer Road, Appleton, where services will be held on Friday (January 11) at 11:00 a.m.  Kathryn will be laid to rest in Hartland Central Cemetery, Gasport.  Memorials may be made to the West Somerset Baptist Church, 1876 Hosmer Road, Appleton, NY 14008.  Please leave a condolence, share a story or light a candle at www.bataviafuneralhomes.com.   Arrangements for Kathryn were completed by the H.E. Patricia Ann Sheedy

Warsaw - Patricia Ann Sheedy, 67, of Warsaw, formerly of Oakfield, a worker at the Workshop of Genesee County ARC in Batavia, died Saturday, January 5, 2019 at East Side Living and Rehabilitaion Center in Warsaw.

Miss Sheedy was born September 3, 1951 in Buffalo, a daughter of the late Michael Morgan Sheedy, Jr. and the late Rita (Popadowski) Sheedy Bell.

Patricia was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, in Batavia, was an avid Buffalo Bills Fan and enjoyed traveling.

She is survived by 4 brothers, Michael M. (Catherine) Sheedy, III of Williamsburg, VA, John R. (Deborah) Sheedy of Honeoye Falls, Christopher (Eve) Sheedy of Los Angeles, CA and Malcolm (Christine) Sheedy of Dallas, TX; a sister, Mary Deborah (George) Garner of Kissimmee, FL; several nieces and nephews. 

She is the sister of the late Margaret Ann Hines and Andrea Sheedy.  

The family deeply appreciates the loving care Patricia received at East Side Living and Rehabilitation Center in Warsaw.

Graveside services will be at 10:00 am, Thursday, January 10, 2019 at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 2951 Harlem Road, Cheektowaga, NY.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Genesee Chapter NYSARC, Inc., P.O. Box 988, Batavia, NY 14021.  Arrangements were completed by H.E. Jeffery D. Torrey, Sr.

BERGEN/STAFFORD - Jeffery D. Torrey, Sr., 46, of Bergen, formerly of Stafford, passed away Wednesday, (January 2, 2019), at Rochester General Hospital.

Jeffery was born February 7, 1972, in Batavia, a son of the late Donald W. and Elizabeth B. (Vickers) Torrey.

Jeff was an avid sports fan and enjoyed listening to music.

He is survived by his children, Jeffery Torrey, Jr. of Columbus, OH, Jaclyn , Anna, and Ryan Torrey all of Attica; a brother, Brian Torrey of LeRoy; niece, Brittney Shaffer of Rochester.  His partner, Tammy Romaine of Bergen also survives.

Friends may call from 6:00 - 8:00 PM on Thursday at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main Street in Batavia. Jeff's Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 AM Friday at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Stafford Rural Cemetery, Stafford.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jeffery's memory may be made to the Torrey Family.

Genevieve M. Maddigan

Bergen - Genevieve M. Maddigan, 92, of Bergen, passed away Sunday, (January 6, 2019) at LeRoy Village Green Nursing Facility, in LeRoy.

Mrs. Maddigan was born January 25, 1926 in Buffalo, a daughter of the late Edward and Irene (Stoyle) Schmatz.

Genevieve’s biggest hobby was her family.  She absolutely cherished time spent around the family dinner table, at family parties and get-togethers. 

She was the wife of the late John J.  Maddigan, Jr., who died July 11, 1985.

Surviving are her children, Laurie (Allen Morris) Maddigan of Boulder City, NV, Roberta (Michael) Spencer of Lockport, Mary Kay (John) Birtch of South Wales, Jennifer (Ray) Kraft of Arcade, Ellen (Thomas) Taylor of Bergen, and John J. (Joann Sees) Maddigan, III of West Seneca; a sister, Madonna (late William) Nagle of Clarence.  28 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews also survive.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Kristina (late Edward) Purtill; brothers, Thomas (late Bernice) and Paul Schmatz; and a sister, Arline (late Arthur) Mullholland.

There will be no visitation.  Genevieve’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday (January 12, 2019) at 9:30 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul, 5480 Main Street, Williamsville.   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.  Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna.

STEPHEN RAYMOND FENTON

STEPHEN RAYMOND FENTON ~ Age 55, of Batavia, died Tuesday January 1, 2019 at United Memorial Medical Center. He was born November 7, 1963, in Batavia, NY a son of Brigitte Houck of Brockport and the late Raymond Fenton.

Stephen was a 1982 graduate of Elba Central School, enjoyed fishing, avid Buffalo Bills fan and enjoyed the music of Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam.       

Survived along with his mother are his children, Monique (Cortney Toler) Fenton of CA and Matthew (Ashley) Fenton of Batavia; grandchildren, Alaska-Vela Fenton and Aidan Edwards; sisters, Cheryl Previte of Gates and Julie (Jim) Loughlin of Niagara Falls; aunt, Debra (Ron) Glor of Churchville along with several nieces, nephews & cousins.

THOMAS C. BRADE, SR.

THOMAS C. BRADE, SR. ~ Age 67, of Batavia, died peacefully Friday December 14, 2018 at Premier Genesee Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation. He was born in Batavia, NY on May 16, 1951 to Jerold Brade of Batavia and the late Beverly (Richardson) Brade, also preceded in death by a brother, Roddy Brade.

Tom served honorably in the US Navy and was a former employee of US Chrome and Batavia Wine Cellars.

Tom was an avid hunter, a pastime who truly enjoyed with his brothers.

Tom is survived by his wife of 41 years, Patricia (Ferrando) Brade of Batavia; children, Thomas C. (Kristen Drilling) Brade, Jr., James “Jimbo” Pursel and Tina Purcel; siblings, Mike (Linda) Brade, Rick (Colleen) Brade, Kim (Jeff) Bauer, Jerry (Lori) Brade, Jamie (Kate) Brade; brother-in-law, Joe (Diana) Ferrando; sisters-in-law, Jane (late William) Ferrando and Rosemary (Martin) Whelan; 4 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

At Tom’s request there are no funeral services, memorials in his memory are suggested to a charity of the donor’s choice and he will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s cemetery.

Nancy H. Fincher

Nancy H. Fincher, 87 years old, lived at 2403 Main Rd., East Pembroke, NY.  Nancy peacefully passed away on January 5, 2019 at Johnson’s Elderly Care, Byron, NY, with help from Orleans County Hospice.  
Nancy was born in East Pembroke, a daughter of the late Earl and Gladys Beckwith Clute. Nancy the wife of the late Dean W. Fincher.  She is also predeceased by her sisters, Frances Klawer and Ruth Klawer.
 
Nancy enjoyed teaching and playing the organ and piano, teaching line dancing, square dancing, singing and directing the church choir, sewing and learning how to work the computer.  In her younger days she also sold Bee Line and Fashion Wagon clothing, plus Sandak Sandals.  Nancy was a loving housewife and raised 5 children.
 
 Nancy was survived by her, children Diane (Larry) Risley of Corfu, Connie (Ken) Golding of Byron, John (Jennifer) Fincher of East Pembroke, Mark (Dawn) Fincher of Morris, Illinois and Joy (Fred) Bookmiller of Corfu, 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren with one more on the way and 1 step great-grandchild. She is also survived by brother-in-laws, Albert Klawer of California and Lee Klawer of East Pembroke and a sister-in-law, Ruth Norton Turnbull of Wisconsin.
 
Family and friends may call on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 from 4 to 8 PM at the Cornerstone Church of East Pembroke, 2583 Main Road, East Pembroke, NY.  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at 11 AM at the church.  Burial will be sometime in the spring in Hillside Cemetery, East Pembroke.

Mary C. Carragher

Mary C. Carragher, 94, of Batavia passed away peacefully on Saturday January 5, 2019 at the Grand Rehabilitation Nursing Facility in Batavia. She was born on August 15, 1924 in Salamanca, NY to the late Robert and Beatrice (Mullen) Sullivan. In addition to her parents, Mary is predeceased by her loving husband; John E. Carragher; daughter Donna Carragher.

Mrs. Carragher was a long time member of St. Mary’s Church. She was a volunteer at the Richmond Library, the St. Jerome’s Hospital Guild and the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce. Mary was the Secretary of the Democratic Committee in Genesee County. She was an avid golfer for many years and acted as the President of the Stafford Ladies Golf Association.  Mary was an avid Yankees, Buffalo Bills and Jordan Spieth fan and was a Master Bridge player.

She is survived by her children; Patricia (James) Whelehan of Geneseo, Michael (Christine) Carragher of FL., Robert (Beth) Carragher of VA., and Nancy (John) Bachulak of Batavia; 6 grandchildren Molly, Katy, Tim, Joe, Maggie and Jimmy; 3 great-grandchildren Nick, Alex and Ben.

There will be no prior calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend A 9:30AM Mass of Christian Burial on Friday January 11, 2019 at Resurrection Parish 18 Ellicott St. Batavia, New York 14020. Mary will be entombed in St. Joseph’s Mausoleum.

Richard A. Williamson

Batavia - Richard A. Williamson, 74, of Batavia, passed away Monday, December 31, 2018 at his home.
 

Richard was born March 6, 1944, in Batavia, a son of the late Thomas W. and Leona E. Oltmann Williamson.  He was predeceased by his sister Judith Ann Williamson.

He was an electrician for Eastman Kodak Co., a member of the Electrical Union Local 86 in Rochester and served with the United States Navy from 1962-1964.
 
Survivors include his daughters, Carrie(David) Knife of Fort Walton Beach, Florida and Christine(James) Hood of Victor, New York; his brother, Thomas (Shirley) Williamson of Bergen; his sister Donna Crowley of Churchville; grandsons, Alexander Knife, Colin Davidson, Dutton and Emerson Hood; niece Darlene (Brendhan) O’Brien; nephews, Kevin (Anne Marie) Williamson and Michael (Megan) Crowley.

   
In death, he is one again with his beloved hound dog and best friend Catie.
