Rochester ~ Brendan D. "Mick" Spillane, age 52, formerly of LeRoy, passed away at home on Saturday afternoon (March 14, 2020) in the loving presence of his family.

    

He was born January 19, 1968 in Batavia, a son of Ursula Drayo Spillane and the late Donald E. Spillane.

     Mickey’s education started in LeRoy, where he attended Holy Family School and became a graduate of Notre Dame High School in Batavia.  He then went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree in English at New York University, New York and then proudly earned his Master of Arts degree in philosophy at The Graduate Faculty at The New School for Research, New York.  He was a scholarship recipient from the Wolfson Center for National Affairs at the World Policy Institute for his writing on social and political theory.

     Mick became the CEO, publishing consultant, editor and writer of his own company, Turn of Phrase Editorial Services.  He was a senior production editor for Harper Collins and Taylor and Francis Books, Inc.,  as well as an editor for many other notable editorial companies.

     In addition to his love of writing, Mick had a passion for gourmet cooking and creating new and exciting dishes.

     He will be enormously missed by his mother, Ursula Spillane of LeRoy; his loving companion of 14 years, Johanna Buran of Rochester; his sisters, Shannon Spillane (Thomas Welsh) of Annapolis, MD and Shawn (Joseph) Siconolfi of Rochester; nephews, Nicholas Vincent and Tyler Siconolfi; special uncle, William Klinkbeil of LeRoy; special cousins, Vicki (David) Clark, Kevin (Barbara) Klinkbeil and Kristopher (Catherine) Kliinkbeil, along with many other relatives and dear friends. He was predeceased by father, Donald in 2012 and his aunt, Rachel Klinkbeil in 2019.

    The services originally scheduled for March 21 for Mr. Spillane have been postponed until a later date to be announce.

LeRoy ~ Rebecca B. Makosy, age 86, passed away early Saturday morning (March 14, 2020) at the Wyoming County Skilled Nursing Facility in Warsaw, in the loving presence of her family.

    

 She was born July 29, 1933 in Apollo, PA, a daughter of the late Harry and Mae Bush Foy.

     Rebecca will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and dear friend, who had a deep devotion to her faith.  She enjoyed doing puzzles and traveling, and was a retiree of General Motors, where she worked for 30 years.

     She is survived by her children; Charles (Carla) Makosy of TX, Sandra (Allen) Sellhorst of LeRoy, Stephen (Robin) Makosy of W. Seneca and Anna Mae (John) Yingling of Clarence; five grandchildren, Amy Sellhorst, Heather Sellhorst, Sarah Makosy, Benjamin Makosy and Kaylee Makosy; great-grandson, Aiden Dyer; siblings, Leona (late Donald) Farmer of TN and Donald (Marilyn) Foy of OH, along with many nieces and nephews.

     She was predeceased by her husband, George Makosy in 1990.

     Local visitation and services will be private for immediate family only at this time. A public memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced.  Mrs. Makosy will be laid to rest at Holy Ascension of Christ Cemetery, Colver, PA on Friday, March 20 at 1:00 P.M.

Paulette B. Zambito-Bird, 70, of Elba passed away on March 13, 2020 at the United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia. She was born on September 26, 1949 in Batavia to the late Charles Zambito Jr. and Alta Calarco of Elba. In addition to her father, Paulette is predeceased by her sister; Lynn Hoffman.

Paulette was an avid New York Yankees and Giants fan. She loved her nieces and nephews so much and spoiled them whenever she could.

In addition to her mom, she is survived by her husband; Brian Bird of Elba; siblings Mary Zambito of Elba, Alta (Mark) Giuliano of Ft. Myers, FL., Charles (Patricia) Zambito of Elba; Rocco (Linda) Zambito of Elba; Anne (John) Lexer of East Rochester, Joseph (Kelly) Zambito of Punta Gorda, FL.; brother-in-law Paul Hoffman of Batavia; along with several nieces and nephews.

There will be no prior calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for immediately family only at St. Padre Pio Parish in Elba. She will be laid to rest in Maple Lawn Cemetery in Elba.

  Lucia S. Nogueira, 82, of Batavia, passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at her home surrounded by her family.  Lucia was born in 1938 in Salvador City, Brazil, the oldest daughter of the late Francisco (Silveria DeJesus) Nogueira. She is preceded in death by her sister; Aida Nogueira.

Lucia was a nun in Brazil and traveled to Spain and then to the US where she resided in LeRoy in 1958. She became a United States citizen in 1963 and lived in Batavia for 62 years. Lucia enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading books and traveling with her family. She retired from St. Jerome’s hospital, where she worked for 41 years.

She is survived by her sisters Tereza Nogueira; Lueza (Richard) Dunn; Laurentina Rosa of Batavia; brother Edwardo (Ruth) Nogueira; niece Lorie Nogueira of Oakfield, along with family living in Brazil.

Audrey C. Stopa, 83 of Williamsville, formerly of Akron, passed away peacefully on Sunday (March 15, 2020) at Hospice Buffalo.

She was born February 17, 1937 in Alden, NY, a daughter of the late William and Grace Shelberg Kron.

Mrs. Stopa was employed by the WNY Swap Sheet prior to her retirement. After retirement, she found enjoyment in her fruit and flower stand she had at her home in Akron.

She was the wife of the late Michael J. Stopa, Jr.; mother of the late Charles Stabell and Joseph Stabell and sister of the late William Kron, Raymond Kron and Dorothy Mugel.

Survivors include her children, Larry (Pat) Stabell, Edward Stabell, Michael Stabell, James (Nancy) Stabell, Kenneth Stabell and Thomas (Dawn) Stabell.  Several grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Sisters, Florence DeWolf, Carol Simon and Ruth Dersam.

Loretta M. Prusak, 89 of Attica, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at Wyoming County Skilled Nursing Facility, Warsaw. She was born January 6, 1931 in Strykersville, to the late Lavern (Loraine Reisdorf) Schlitz. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Eugene J. Prusak, siblings Lavern, Larry, Leslie Schiltz; Leona McCormick, Luella Eckert, Lorma Barker.

Mrs. Prusak was a longtime member of Sts. Joachim & Anne Parish, Catholic Daughters and honorary member of Attica Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She worked for many years at Super Duper in Attica. Mrs. Prusak was very active with the Wyoming County Senior Citizens, she enjoyed playing cards, word search, Yahtzee, baking and was an avid Buffalo Bills fan. Her family always came first, especially with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her children John (Chris) Prusak; James (Denise) Prusak; Ann (Doug) Post all of Attica; Susan (Phil) Ulm of Wyoming; siblings Leon Schiltz of Holland, NY; Lynn (Daryle) Schiltz of Colden; sister-in-law Sharon Schiltz of Perry; 9 grandchildren Randi (Brian), Justin (Jen), Joshua (Deanna), James (Megan) Jr., Alexis (Trenton), Aaron (Renee), Courtney, Valerie, Jarrod,  and 2 great-grandchildren Austin and Makayla, along with several nieces and nephews.

William J. Renz Sr., 88, of Batavia passed away on Thursday March 12, 2020 at Gateway House in Attica. William was born on March 25, 1931 in New Orleans, LA to late Fred (Gladys Cuevas) Renz. Mr. Renz is preceded in death by his wife; Josephine (Giambrone) Renz.

Mr. Renz was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Air Force and the Army during WWII and the Korean War. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was always willing to give for his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his beloved children; William J. Renz Jr., Nancy Kustas both of Batavia; Diane (John) Cintorino of Byron; brothers Joseph (Leah) Renz of Brownsville, TX., Lou (Patricia) Renz of Kenner, LA.; sister-in-law Mary Giambrone of Oakfield; 2 grandchildren, Michael (Suzanne) Cintorino of Batavia, Matthew (Rachel) Renz of Churchville; great-granddaughter Arianna Cintorino, along with several nieces and nephews.

Basom - Rose M. Hodgins, 97, of Basom, passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2020, at Beechwood Continuing Care in Getzville.

Rose was born August 6, 1922, in Akron, a daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Skocic) Wukman.

A member of St. Padre Pio Parish, Rose enjoyed cooking, entertaining and gardening.  She catered weddings in the Oakfield Alabama area and took the dog census for the town of Alabama.  Rose was a school bus driver for the Oakfield Alabama Central School District for 30 years.

Survivors include her daughters, Gail (Larry) Vogt of The Villages, FL and Sue (Joel) Davis of Concord, NH; grandchildren, Melisa (John) Schrock of Akron, Jeremy Vogt of Port Orford, OR, Aaron (Whitney) Vogt of Land O'Lakes, FL, Andrew (Melissa) Davis of Hopkinton, NH and Kevin (Pamela) Davis of Hopkinton, NH; great-grandchildren, Lindsay Cahill and Erin (Trevor) Gray, Rylee and Taylor Vogt, Jack and Grant Davis and Birch and Ivy Davis; a great-great-granddaughter, Ameila Rose Gray; sisters, Mary Wukman of Williamsville, Catherine Gorman of Clarence and Millicent (Sidney) Rosenburg of Georgia and several nieces and nephews.

Rose is the wife of the late Curtis Hodgins, mother of the late Thomas Hodgins and sister of the late John Wukman and Anna Miller.

A Celebration of Life for Rose will be held at a later date.  She will be laid to rest in Alabama Cemetery.

Ida A. Enright, 85 of Rochester, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2020 at Premier Genesee Center. She was born in Rochester, January 31, 1935 to the late Burton (Jennie Barnhart) Warney. She is preceded in death by her husband Michael Enright, daughter Robin A. Yoos, siblings Donald Warney, Patricia Warney and Hatti Barnhart.     

Mrs. Enright was considered a professional shopper by her family. She was an amazing, loving wife, mother and grandmother.     

She is survived by her beloved children Linda Siebert of TX; Robert C. Shattuck of Rochester; Cynthia A. (Mark) Haymon of Bergen; William (Amy) Shattuck of Dansville; Valda Lacoursiere of TX; Nancy Hoffmiere of Rochester; along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren,  several nieces and nephews.

OAKFIELD - Jonathan R. Hyman, 47, of Oakfield, passed away Thursday, (January 23, 2020), at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia.

Mr. Hyman was born November 4, 1972, in Batavia, a son of the late Richard and Debra (Wood) Hyman.

Jonathan enjoyed video games and comic books. 

He is survived by his brother, Shane (Rachel Allen) Hyman of Oakfield and a nephew, Aiden Hyman.

Mr. Hyman is preceded in death by a daughter, Dominique Hyman.

There will be no visitation. Memorial services will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Oakfield Community Bible Church, 80 North Main Street, Oakfield, where a  reception will follow services in the church hall. ELBA -- Peter Guy Buckel passed away peacefully February 15^th, 2020 at his home in Elba. 

Peter was born in Batavia, NY March 3, 1961. He is preceded in death by his parents Richard and Leona (Stroh) Buckel, and a brother, David S. Buckel.

Peter enjoyed gardening, landscaping projects, horseback riding, woodworking and nature, campfires, and the ocean, playing and singing music, playing cards, cooking and barbecuing. He also enjoyed horseshoes, traveling, target shooting and he always found time to help others. Peter was a good conversationalist and had a kind heart.

He was employed at UMMC in Batavia, NY as Facility Mechanic/Maintenance worker; he also held the position of Emergency Preparedness Coordinator since 2015. He trained new drivers for the ambulance and volunteered as an Instructor of Emergency Medical Services training and education; he was also involved in the education and activities of children by teaching them safety procedures. He volunteered as Representative and Chairman of City, County and NY State EMT Programs. 

He is survived by: his daughter, Kristi Buckel Hebert, of Louisiana; three brothers -- James (Carol) Buckel, of Nunda, Ken (Sharon) Buckel, of Florida, and Robert (Alice) Buckel, of Batavia; and two very close friends, Ray Bolster and Michele Freeman, of Elba, and several nieces and nephews.

JACK P. HAWKS ~ 87, native and longtime resident of Batavia, New York, has sadly passed away in Hernando Beach, FL on March 5, 2020, surrounded by family and friends. Jack P. Hawks was the son of the late, Newman L. Hawks Jr. and Bendetta V. Page and stepson to the late Richard Kearney Sr.  He was a beloved sibling to the late Joseph Kearney.

Mr. Hawks graduated from the Batavia School System, where he enjoyed playing football, track, and baseball. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War and earned the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the PRES Unit Citation.

Mr. Hawks worked at Graham Manufacturing for 14 years. He began his career with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department as a Special Deputy on the Water Rescue Team in 1966 and became a Deputy Sheriff in 1969 and retired in 1992. He then worked as a security officer for the Social Services Department in Batavia until his retirement in 2012. Mr. Hawks proudly served his country and the people of Genesee County for most of his adult life. 

Jack lived his remaining years enjoying the wildlife and nature in Florida with his daughter, Susan, and son-in-law, Gary, after living at home with his son, Jack, for 26 years. The family is grateful for the homecare provided by the local Hospice agency until the end of his life. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. We will see you again in heaven, Jack.  

Mr. Hawks was married to Carol Berg, of Rochester, NY, for 26 years and was the loving father of four children, Debra Hawks (Bill Peabody), Jack L. Hawks, Judy Hawks, and Susan (Gary) Bricker. He was a devoted grandfather to Brianna (Jessica) Hawks, Eduardo (Araceli Solobac) Canudas, Nicholas Militello, Anthony Militello, Lorena (Victor Gonzalez) Canudas, and Lt. William Peabody (Lauren), and great-grandfather to Ana Lucia and Fernanda Gonzalez and Aiden and Alexander Hawks. Stepson to Jennie Hawks. He was a beloved sibling to Richard (Rita) Kearney, Kathleen Kearney, Janet Hawks, Betty Ann (Thomas) Bartz, Paul (Mary Ann) Hawks, Sharon (Peter) Walker, and Larry (Vicky) Hawks. He also leaves behind nieces, nephews, cousins, and many good friends.

The Hawks family will be present at the Michael S. Tomaszewski Funeral & Cremation Chapel, LLC 4120 W. Main St. Rd. Batavia, New York 14020, March 14th, 2020 from 10 am to 12 pm with a Celebration of Life Service to follow. Jack P. Hawks will be laid to rest at Grand View Cemetery in Batavia, New York. Caryn P. Rosen, 68 of Amherst and formerly of Akron, passed away peacefully on Monday (March 9, 2020) at McAuley Residence in Kenmore, NY, under the care of Hospice.

She was born in Buffalo, NY on November 18, 1951, a daughter of the late Irving and Olive Bennett Domres.

Caryn was a caring individual who always went out of her way to help others. She loved to spend time with her family and enjoyed other activities such a playing board games, card games and gardening. With her late husband, she had a passion for motorcycle rides. Caryn was a Unit Secretary for Brother of Mercy Nursing Home and most recently at Kenmore Mercy Hospital. Her loving heart will be dearly missed by her family and anyone who knew her.

She was predeceased by her husband, Spencer Rosen and son, Wayne Rosen.

Survivors include her daughter, Kelly (Kevin) Neumann of Tonawanda. Grandchildren, Amber and Gavin Neumann. Brother, Corrie (Sandra) Domres of Akron and Debbie Freudenheim of Cheektowaga. Also survived by nieces and nephews.

Jane E. Bossart Campbell, 81, formerly from Stafford, NY, went to be with the Lord on March 2, 2020, at home surrounded by family.

She was born April 18, 1938, in Batavia, NY, the daughter of Helen and Mark Bossart. She was the youngest of 7 siblings.

On August 16, 1958 she married James W. Campbell, who survives. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Laura Campbell, of Irving, Texas; grandchildren Audra and Layden; daughter and son-in-law, Yvonne and Donald Smith, of Zephyrhills, Fla.; grandchild Caleb; daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and David Jasper, of Riverview, Fla.; and grandchildren Naomi, Nasya, Nehemiah and Nahum.

She is also survived by two siblings, Ruth Bossart Belling and Jean Bossart Stenshorn.

She was a lifetime member of the Stafford Fireman’s Ladies Auxiliary, an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and a Girl Scout Leader.

A memorial service will be held this spring at the Stafford Cemetery.

Joan Heath Lapp Wood, 94 of Batavia, passed away peacefully March 6, 2020 at Premier Genesee. She was born in Batavia, November 29, 1925 to the late George (Ruth Halbert) Heath. She is preceded in death by husbands Carlton J. Lapp in 1970 and Dale E. Wood in 1981; sons Douglas Lapp and David Lapp.    

Joan was the owner and operator of Joannie’s Pet Grooming Shop in Elba. A 1943 graduate of South Byron High School, she was a member of East Shelby Community Bible Church. Joan was a volunteer at Stephens Table in Batavia, and volunteered for the medical transport service for Office of the Aging in Batavia. She also worked as an assistant aide for over 30 years for Dr. Paul Phillips Animal Hospital in Batavia, retiring in 2005.

Surviving are her children Anne Clark of Albion; Sandra Johnson of Byron; Donald Lapp of South Bend, IN; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother Halbert (Barbara) Heath of WI; along with several nieces and nephews.

There will be no prior calling hours. A 4:00 PM Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2020 at East Shelby Community Bible Church, 5278 E. Shelby Road, Medina, NY 14103. She will be laid to rest in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Bennington.
