Batavia ~ John W. Speidel, age 85, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2020.

   

  He was the beloved husband of Sieglinde (Lynne) for 62 wonderful years, devoted father of Susan (Chris) Edelman, Timothy (Lisa) Speidel, Stephen (Laura) Speidel and Daniel (Carol) Speidel; loving grandfather of 11 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.  Also survived by his loving sister, Margret King of Batavia; 3 brothers and sisters-in-law, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.

     John was a blacksmith, welder and ran the family business with his father, Speidel Welding Service.  Many homes and businesses enjoy a "Speidel built" wrought iron railing in Genesee County.  John ended his career as an Iron Worker out of Local 33.  He was a veteran of the US Army, reaching the rank of Sergeant before his honorable discharge.

     John was also a Deacon and lifelong member of the New Apostolic Church in Batavia.  He brought joy wherever he was and had many special connections within the community.  He will be missed dearly.

Kathleen V.  Rogers, 89, of Gainesville, FL, passed away on December 12, 2020 at the Gateway House in Attica.

Kathleen was born August 1, 1931 in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, a daughter of the late Archibald and Ellen Farrell.  She came to the United States at the age of 18.

She loved spending time with her husband, sons and their families.  Her grandchildren were the joy of her life.  She spent many hours with her family at their cottage in the Adirondacks.  She loved scrabble and other board games; singing songs on the front porch swing; and drawing and coloring with her grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Roy S. Rogers; her sons, Ty (Elizabeth Tarr) Rogers of Forrest Hills, Farrell (Jessica) Rogers of Lakeland, FL and Durin (Paula Campbell) Rogers of Batavia; grandchildren, Ilana Rogers, Kyle Rogers, Bryce Rogers, Jacob Rogers, Natalie Rogers and Luke Rogers; a sister, Margaret Loughram of Northern Ireland and a special niece, Ellen Hardy of Ontario, Canada. Preceded in death by a sister, Rosaline Loughram.

Timothy R. Geyer, 61 of Oakfield, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, December 13, 2020. He was born May 3, 1959 in Lancaster to Bernice (Lindstedt) Geyer of Lancaster and the late Robert Geyer. He is preceded in death by his cherished Uncle Roy Lindstedt.

After 33 years Tim retired from the D.O.T this past April. 

Tim above all loved his family. He was a lover of the outdoors - hunting, fishing and target shooting. He loved old cars, the Buffalo Bills and being a baseball coach. Tim loved being with his friends especially his lifelong best friend Scott Cooper. His favorite activities also included taking his granddaughter Oakley and grand puppy Rex for walks and taking his wife Nancy to the casino. Tim will be missed by many. 

Tim is survived by his beloved wife Nancy E. (Kilger) Geyer of Oakfield, children Lindsay (Kyle) Amendola of Spencerport, Andrew Geyer of Clarence Center; sister Kathy (Michael) Rowse of VA; granddaughter Oakley Amendola, along with several nieces and nephews.

Madeline Ann Sorensen, 73, of Clermont Florida, passed away on December 10th, 2020. She was born in Batavia, New York on September 19th, 1947 to Samuel and Josephine Zito Paladino. She was married to Wallace Sorensen on March 10th 1972. Together they resided in Leroy, New York for 26 years and happily moved to Florida and called Clermont home for 22 years . 

Madeline was a giver more than a taker. She always put her children and grandchildren before herself. She was beautiful and wise. She raised her children to be kind, soft spoken, honest, confident and loved. She could be stubborn, yet had a witty sense of humor about her. She never missed any of her children’s or grandchildren’s sporting or dance events. The smile on her face while her grandchildren and children performed was priceless. Whatever her children or grandchildren needed, she provided. She had compassion like no other. Her purpose in life was to be the best wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend that she could be. 

Madeline loved the beach even though she would only go in the water waist high. She loved the warm Florida sunshine. One of her favorite places to go with family was SeaWorld where she was a pass-member since 1999. She was the ultimate caregiver. She traveled back to New York many summers to take care of her grandson while her daughter and son in law were at work. They had a very special bond she would show him how to cook and they would laugh together. 

Madeline and her husband cared for their twin granddaughters since birth, when their parents were at work. She enjoyed teaching her granddaughters how to cook and bake. They did arts and crafts together. She shared the closest bond with her grandchildren and was so proud of them as well as her own children. When her husband Wally was sick in the hospital 6 years ago, she learned how to pump gas and drive the highways for the very first time. Her favorite place to be was at home with her husband or out doing things with him and family. 

Madeline loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and family it was everything to her. She complimented strangers. She never raised her voice in anger. She was an observer and always knew what was best for her family. 

Madeline was preceded in passing by her brother Richard Paladino. Her legacy of love and grace will live on in the hearts of her Loving husband Wallace Sorensen, her daughter, Deborah (Daryl) Hamler. Her son Michael (Amy) Sorensen. Grandchildren Daryl Richard Hamler, Makayla and Makenna Sorensen. Siblings Ronald (Elaine) Paladino, Robert (Ellen) Paladino, Roger (Cathy) Paladino, Michelle (Michael) Beer, and Raymond (Anne) Paladino, Aunt Mary Barone and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Madeline will be greatly missed by all who loved and adored her. Her memory will always live on in the hearts of many. Her legacy lives on in the lives of her wonderful husband, children, grandchildren, friends and family. Let us pay our respects to Madeline with love, grace, forgiveness and compassion. This is what she would love to see continue while she smiles on us from above. 

We will love and miss you until we meet again in the stars. Then our laughs will echo for eternity. Journey in peace beautiful Madeline Ann Sorensen. We love you forever.

Lockport - Angeline Haehl, 90 of Lockport,  passed away on Saturday, December 12, 2020 at Niagara Hospice in Lockport following a brief illness.

Mrs. Haehl was born November 7, 1930 in Oakfield, a daughter of the late Vincenzo and Mary (Canceleri) Cardinali.

Angeline was a gifted roller skater. She participated in the 1990 and 1991 US Junior Olympics and won a gold medal in the Team Dance event both years.

Angeline is the wife of James Haehl of Lockport.  The two were married November 26, 1959.

Surviving with her husband are several nieces and nephews.

There is no visitation.  A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Padre Pio Parish - St. Cecilia's Worship Site in Oakfield. Charles Arnold “Arnie” Wilson, age 75 of Perry, NY passed away on December 5, 2020 at Rochester General Hospital in Rochester.  He was born on January 18, 1945 on Warsaw, NY, a son to the late Charles Alan and Barbara (Hudson) Wilson. Along with his parents he is preceded in death by a sister: Linda Chenaille, brother: James Wilson and brother-in-law: Donald Butler.

Arnie was a 1963 graduate of Wyoming Central School. He served with the US Army from 1966-68.  He worked for over 34 years with Pavilion Natural Gas Co. and Rochester Gas and Electric, retiring in 2003.  Arnie was a member of the First Congregational Church in Perry Center where he was a deacon, a fireman for the Perry Fire Department where he was Past Chief, member of the Perry Fire Department Benevolent Association and a longtime member and Director of the Perry VFW.  He enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden where he grew pumpkins for sale, and especially enjoyed times spent with family.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years: Carol Anne (Butler) Wilson who he married on September 4, 1965, daughter: Lisa Scarborough of Arizona, son: Chad (Laura) Wilson of N. Chili, sister: Sue (Steve) Lee of Warsaw , step-mother: Alice Wilson of Wyoming, grandsons: Tyler and Evan Scarborough, Cole, Chase and Cage Wilson, great granddaughter: Harper Scarborough, brother-in-laws: Jack (Nancy) Butler of Perry, Mike (Karen) Chenaille of Florida, sister-in-law: Joann Butler of Perry, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Batavia - Larry Dean Horine, 69 of Batavia,  passed away on Thursday, (December 10, 2020) at his home.

Mr. Horine was born June 2, 1951 in Higginsville, Missouri, a son of the late Floyd Horine and Mabel (Kelly) Horine.

Larry was a farmer and enjoyed anything outdoors.  He frequently could be found puttering around or working on his tractors.  Although he would never admit it, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie (Brinkman) Horine of Batavia; children, Timothy (Joanne) Horine of Pavilion, Kristina (Marty) Sanders of Albion, and Paul "PJ" Horine of Batavia; grandchildren, Tyler, Samantha, Mathew, Lindsay, Chloe, and Cayla.

Born May 13, 1923, in Buffalo, N.Y., to Peter and Lucy Mancuso, the eldest daughter and one of five children.  She was raised on the West Side, attended public schools, and graduated from Girls’ Vocational High School.

In 1950, she married Dominic Cecero and relocated with him to Batavia, N.Y., where she lived for 64 years.  Together, they raised two children, Diane and David.

She was a longtime employee of the New York State Department of Labor where she was known as The Unemployment Lady.  For years, she guided Batavians in their efforts to collect unemployment.  Her fluency in Italian was welcomed by many.

She was active at St. Anthony’s Parish, St. Anthony’s School, St. Mary’s School, Notre Dame High School, and St. Jerome’s Guild – spending countless hours organizing dances and breakfasts and fashion shows to raise money and friends.

Not only was she a working wife and mother, she was a traditional Italian woman – canning tomatoes and baking pizza, pies, and cookies for her family and friends.

Her marriage of 55 years ended upon Dominic’s death in 2005.  She remained in the family home until 2014 when a fall left her with a broken hip that forced her to relocate to Pittsford.

She reluctantly left Batavia but found a new home at Laurelwood Assisted Living where she charmed her new friends and lived happily for over six years.

Eleanore was adored by her husband, her two children, five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, her siblings and in-laws, her nieces and nephews, and countless friends.  She is survived by her daughter Diane Cecero (Mark Whelan) of Pittsford, son David Cecero (Margie) of Southlake, TX, grandchildren Caroline Tolbert (Isaiah) of Brighton, Stephen Whelan (Maria) of Washington, DC, Jonathan Cecero (Monica) of Chicago, IL, Michael Cecero (Melissa) of Thompson Station, TN, Lindsay Cecero of Venice, CA, brother Sam Mancuso of Williamsville, NY, seven great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and countless friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is predeceased by her brother Stephen and sisters Mary and Josephine, her in-laws Theresa, Mary, Michael, Gloria, John, Anthony, Rose, and Joseph, Mary, Joan, Theresa, and Michael, and her niece Joanne and nephew Phillip.

She died peacefully at 97 surrounded by family on December 8, 2020.

LeRoy ~ Elizabeth Jane Nicoll "Betsy" Darby, age 64, passed away late Tuesday evening (December 8, 2020) at home in the loving presence of her family.

    

She was born August 4, 1956 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Robert and Dorothy Armitage Nicoll.

     Betsy will be remembered as a very loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, who always put her faith, family and friends foremost.  She was a very compassionate, charitable and devoted person who was well known to be a practitioner of good trouble. She was a member of the LeRoy United Methodist Church, where she was very active in church affairs.

     Betsy was beloved by many and will truly be missed by her loving and devoted husband of 37 years, Thomas Darby; her children, Justin Darby, Roselind Darby, David (Crystal) Darby, Deven Darby and Rachel (Zachary Park) Darby; grandchildren, Talyn, Wyatt, Milo and Robert; siblings, Barb Nicoll, Thomas Nicoll, William Nicoll and Jeffrey (Beth) Nicoll, along with many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Batavia - Joan Pietrzykowski, 54, of Batavia, passed away on Tuesday, December 8^th, 2020 from complications of COVID-19.

Joanie was born on November 14^th, 1966 in Batavia, a daughter of Joseph and Dorothy Pietrzykowski, who preceded her in death as well as a sister Mary Ann (2006) and a brother John (Linda) (2020) who also preceded her in death.

Joanie is survived by siblings, Joseph, Lucy, Carol, all of Batavia and Robert (Nadine) of Katie, Texas, several nieces and nephews, a great-niece and several great-nephews, all who adored her.  As well as family, very special friends of many years include, Terry Warters, Debbie Prosser and Ken Palmer.

Joanie lived a very active and social lifestyle.  Many remember her delivering papers on Jackson Street for 19 years, which she gave up to work at the ARC sheltered work shop. She was very visible in the community, volunteering and attending ARC outings and dinner group with her many friends. Special thanks to Faith Community Chapel, where she attended faithfully.

Joanie’s smile was infectious, lighting up the lives of all her knew her. It was a privilege to be part of her life. She is loved and will be missed.

LeRoy ~ Sheryl L. Russell, age 70, of Myrtle Street, passed away Monday afternoon (December 7, 2020) at Strong Memorial Hospital.

     She was born April 2, 1950 in Battle Creek, MI, a daughter of the late Donald and Ardis Hill.

     Sheryl will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and dear friend to many.  She was known as a very giving and active member of the LeRoy Moose Center Chapter 1132, where she enjoyed volunteering for many projects and was the first female member to achieve the mark of signing up 25 new members for the chapter.  She was also a life member of the VFW Post 1602 in Batavia.

     She will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 34 years, Bruce Russell, her daughter, Dawn Orlando of Batavia; her grandson, Cristian DeSalvo, along with many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

     In addition to her parents, Sheryl was predeceased by all of her brothers and sisters.

Elaine M. Carrow, 81 of Lima, NY, passed away peacefully on Sunday (December 6, 2020) at Strong memorial Hospital.

She was born February 11, 1939 in Perrysburg, NY, a daughter of the late Henry and Doris Slade Carrow.

Elaine was a avid gardener. She had a green thumb like no other. She was a member of the Moose Club, Elks Lodge and the American Legion. She loved helping with the luncheons and creating the beautiful flower centerpieces. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and her great-grandchild. She was the happiest when surrounded by her family. If you had the pleasure of knowing Elaine you knew she had an amazingly loving heart and the best sense of humor. 

She was predeceased by her son Jeffrey Rogers, longtime partner Carl Nelson, and several brothers and sisters. 

Survivors include her daughter Sylvia (John Hasnay) Rogers of Batavia. Son, Weston Rogers of Wellsville. Grandchildren, Christy (Richard) Fleig of Batavia and Niki Joos of LeRoy. Great-grandchild, Tanner Cook. Brother in law Ralph Stuart, Sister in law Laura Carrow and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held privately with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville, NY.

Ronald Jewel Drock “Candyman” of Oakfield, passed away on December 6, 2020 at Strong Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.  

He was born August 5, 1940 in Batavia, a son of the late Jennie Greenbaum Drock.

A lifelong employee at Oliver's Candies, Ron worked his way up to master candy maker.  He was a longtime member of Eagles Club, LeRoy Moose, and Godfrey's Pond where he served on the board.  Ron loved camping and flea marketing.  He also volunteered his time at the Salvation Army soup kitchen.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years,  Jean (Wetherwax) Drock; his three children; Linda Drock of Batavia, Brian (Gaye) Drock of Basom and Jennifer Maskell (Chris Grill) of Union, Missouri; six grandchildren; Triton Drock, Jessica Benson, Cassandra Drock, Kelly Maskell, Andrew Branam-Drock and Lukas Maskell; two sisters; Patricia Fisher and Mary Jane Fugle and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his siblings; Frank Drock, Raymond Miles, Edward Drock, Alice Kinney and Jim Happ.

In Ron's time of need his niece Sherry and Mark Reuter were a blessing to him.

Friends may call on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Avenue, Oakfield, where services will follow at 12:00 p.m. He will be laid to rest in Cary Cemetery. Batavia- Ms. Gertrude C. Quaintance, 89, of Batavia went to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, December 6, 2020.

Born in Buffalo, NY on May 3, 1931, she was the daughter of the late George J. and Elizabeth Pound Quaintance.

She loved people and children, working as a nanny for 20 years and also at the Genesee County Nursing Home.

Best known as “Aunt Gertie” by so many, she will be remembered as a kind soul with a very generous and giving heart. She loved baking, canning, gardening and also enjoyed a special ministry to her church family by blessing the graduating seniors each year with a handmade quilt.

She was an active member of Grace Baptist Church, Batavia for 42 years.

She is predeceased by siblings Marjorie (Don) Woodruff, Joyce (Elmer) Toellner, Joan (Vern) Laity, Ernest (Donna) Quaintance, Ivan (Ruth) Quaintance and Donald (Betty) Quaintance.

Surviving family includes Stanley (Sharon) Quaintance of Alexander, Edward (Suzanne) of Williamsburg, VA, Gwen (Don) Stelley of Oklahoma City, Okla. and several nieces and nephews.

In addition, she is also survived by the Underwood family with whom she shared a special bond and loved dearly.

Calling hours are Saturday, December 12th at Grace Baptist Church, 238 Vine St, Batavia from 10am-11:30am.  Funeral services will be private.   She will be laid to rest in Acacia Park Cemetery, North Tonawanda.

LeRoy ~ David L. Graham, age 87, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning (December 3, 2020).

    

David was born on April 13, 1933 in Batavia, NY,  the son of John and Isabelle Graham.  He lived the first part of his life in Stafford, NY, which he always fondly remembered.  The rest of his life would be spent in LeRoy, NY.

     He will be dearly missed by his daugther, Sarah (Mark) Tomaszewski, grandchildren, Conor (Travis Bleier) Tomaszewski and Krysta Graham Tomaszewski.  He is also survived by his brother, Jack (Marty) Graham and several nieces, nephews and his cherished "grand-dogs", Harley and Oakley.

     He was a veteran of the Korean War.  The story is that when he left to start his army career, his sister, Nancy would not say goodbye to him.  She was afraid that he wouldn't return.  It shows the bond between the two and his mom because he was called "home" on the same day (Dec. 3) as his sister and mother.

     I remember hearing stories about a red convertible that David and Jack would ride past the Ladd house in LeRoy to catch my mom's attention.  I am so glad it worked and they were happily married for 55 years.

     He is predeceased by his wife, Lynette "Scottie" Graham, his parents, John and Isabelle Graham, sister, Nancy Graham Grayson Heath, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Helen and Richard Ladd.

     He was a fireman in both Stafford and LeRoy, and was very proud of that.  His first job after coming home from Korea would be selling insurance.  After that, he found his love of selling real estate.  This was where he met so many people in the area.  Wherever we went, he would make a connection with people he spoke with.  Later in life, he purchased The Graham's Edson House B & B.  He loved meeting and helping people on their travels.  So many international travelers would get off a plane in NYC and hop on the Thruway and think they would see the country in a week.  He helped these people realize how big the United States is and they would have to pick and choose what they could see.

     The past nine months were trying due to COVID, but his family feels very blessed for the ten days we were able to spend with him at the end of his life.  We would like to give a Big Thank You to the C Wing staff at the Village Green Nursing home and the Activities Department for all that they do every day to make sure our loved ones are safe and feel loved.  I would also like to say Thank You to the wonderful group of people that helped him to stay in his apartment.  You gave us a wonderful year.

     So many people have such fond memories of my dad being in his yard at the B & B, that it only seems appropriate to remember him this way.  If you would like to send a memorial in his name to the LeRoy Village Green, 10 Munson Street, LeRoy, NY 14482, this will go towards extending the gardens that we started in his wife's memory.

     A Service for David will be announced in the Spring of 2021.
