Teresa A. Figlow, 74 of Batavia, passed away peacefully Saturday (May 15, 2021) at her residence under the care of her loving family and hospice.

She was born January 3, 1947 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Anthony and Jennie Tessitore LaFarnara.

Teresa spent her entire life in Batavia where she grew up, went to school, met and married her husband of 56 years and raised her 3 children and was instrumental in the rearing of her grandkids too.  She took care of many other children who to this day think of her as a second mom.  She was a constant, consistent source of support and care to her family and friends and although we all thought she worried a bit too much about us we never doubted her deep love and concern.   She could be found at home, crocheting and many people have her beautiful afghans in their homes or she was cooking and caring for her family.  She worked many jobs in the community and even for a time owned her own business. She loved collecting and has many curated collections of angels and things she loved but none as fiercely as she loved her family. 

She overcame many losses in her life and it was a quiet testimony to her deep faith. She was very private about her illness and wanted to be remembered for how she was before she fell ill.  Teresa displayed the same strength and courage to the end that she embodied in her life and was an example for all of us.  

Survivors include her husband, Anthony Figlow of Batavia. Daughter, Jodi (Steven) Coburn of Batavia. Son, Adam (Teresa) Figlow of Batavia. Brother, Nick (Kathy) LaFarnara of Batavia. Grandchildren, Shaun, Joshua, Jocelyn, Seth and Joel Coburn, Anthony, Dallas and Heath Figlow, Ashanti, Joseph, Nickolas, Noah and Emma Figlow.

She was the mother of the late Michael Figlow.

Tom Morris Jr., 90, of Batavia passed away peacefully at home on May 11, 2021. He was born on August 12, 1930 in Hazard, Kentucky to the late Tom Morris Sr. and Oma (Campbell) Morris; also predeceased by son in law Richard Hess.

He is survived by his beloved wife; Vivian (Allbee, Gromlovits) Morris; loving father of daughters; Carol (Van) Reeves and Sharon Hess; stepfather to Gary (Kelly) Gromlovits, David (Susan) Gromlovits, Robert (Amy) Gromlovits and James (Kathryn) Gromlovits. 5 grandchildren, 11 step-grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 7 step great-grandchildren. 

There will be no prior calling hours. A private Graveside Service will be held at the Western New York National Cemetery in Corfu.

Pavilion ~ (Pastor) Samuel M. McAllister, age 38 of Lake Street, passed away Saturday morning (May 15, 2021) at home in the loving presence of his family.

   

  He was born March 24, 1983 in Des Moines, Iowa, the second son of Dwight and Marcia McAllister.

     Sam was a loving husband, father, son, brother, nephew, cousin and dear friend to many.  He was devoted to both his family and his Lord and Savior. Sam attended Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, where he earned his Master’s Degree in Theology.  He had a passion for all people to experience the power and promises that come from knowing God. His desire was to see lives changed and to help each member to have a vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ.  Pastor Sam came to the Pavilion community with his young family to serve as their pastor at the First Baptist Church in December of 2016.

     An incredibly strong and brave person, Sam was not afraid to step outside the box and face a new challenge, whether it be cooking, playing the role of peacemaker, or interacting and playing games with the children and teens of the community.  Behind the scenes of being a pastor, Sam was a tech savvy graphic designer; he enjoyed reading and sipping a good cup of coffee.

       In addition to his parents, Dwight and Marcia McAllister of Greer, SC, he is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 14 years, Alaina Wilcox McAllister; son, Isaiah; twin daughters, Savannah and Sophia; siblings, Joel (Crystal) McAllister of CO, twin sister, Sarah McAllister of GA and Rebekah (Bryan) DeChaine of SC, along with many aunts, uncle, nieces, nephews and dear friends.  Sam had a special love for his church family and the entire community.

     Sam’s family will be present to receive friends on Wednesday, May 19 from 5 ~ 8 P.M. at the Falcone Family Funeral & Cremation Service Inc., 8700 Lake St. Rd. (Rt. 19), LeRoy.  A Memorial Celebration of Sam’s Life will be held on Thursday, May 20 at 1:30 P.M. at the Pavilion First Baptist Church, 10956 Lake St., Pavilion. Interment in Fairview Cemetery will be private.  (Facemasks and 50% capacity restrictions are in place for visitation and Services)

Batavia - Immaculata Iannello, 73 of Batavia, passed away on Friday, (May 14, 2021) at Elderwood at Brockport.

Mrs. Iannello was born July 17, 1947 in Asheville, North Carolina a daughter of the late Fortunato and Angela Rose (Chereso) Ilasi.

Immaculata earned a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology from Rosary Hill College (now Daemen College) and had a more than 40 year career working first at St. Jerome Hospital and then United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia. She retired as the head of Bacteriology. Mrs. Iannello was a parishioner of Resurrection Parish. She loved to read and watch television and movies - especially science fiction. She will be remembered for her sense of humor and her love of a good story.

Immaculata is the wife of the late John Samuel Iannello.

Surviving are her sons, John Iannello of Batavia, and Joseph Iannello of Lockport; grandchildren, Graclyn Ptak and Rae Iannello both of Burnsville, North Carolina; brothers, Nicholas (Constance) Ilasi of Batavia, and Salvatore Ilasi of Los Angeles, Cali.; brother-in-law, Richard (Anne) Iannello of Batavia. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

She is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Coraline Iannello, and a brother, Stephen (late Elaine) Ilasi.  

Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday from 4 to 7 pm  at H.E. Turner & Co. Macomb/Zephyrhills - Gerald G Elliott, 73  of Macomb, New York and Zephyrhills, Florida and formerly of Corfu, passed away on December 22, 2020 at Advent Health in Zephyrhills.

Mr. Elliott was born December 1, 1947 in Batavia, a son of the late George and Evadene (Wiltse) Elliott.

He was a 1967 graduate of Pembroke High School. Following high school, he enlisted in the Army, where he served honorably during the Vietnam War. Gerald was a member of the Akron Masonic Lodge, the Shriners, American Legion, VFW, and the Elks Club. He retired in 2010 after 36 years as a heavy equipment operator with County Line Stone.

Mr. Elliott enjoyed landscaping, hunting, fishing, spending time with family and friends, and traveling between Black Lake and Florida.

Surviving are his children, Steven Elliott of Corfu, Michelle Czechowicz of Lockport, and Amanda Elliott of Basom; grandchildren, Bryce, Kristen, Jason, Amarri, Journie, Giara, and Isaiah;  his companion, Pai, of Florida; siblings, Reylene (late George) VanGeldren of Fishkill, Gayle (Dennis) Waldron of Byron, Lee (Bonnie) Schoenthal of Corfu, and Ila Jean (late John) Terry of Hammond. Nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

Family and friends are invited to call on May 22, 2021 from 1:00 pm  to 2:00 pm  at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, where a Masonic Service and Memorial Service will immediately follow at 2:00 pm. Gerald will be interred in the Western New York National Cemetery in Corfu at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

LeRoy – Helen B. Church, 96, died in her home at St. Ann’s Community at the Greens in LeRoy on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 following a long illness.

Mrs. Church was born on September 5, 1924 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Clarence L. and Marion Annabal Buchholtz.  She graduated from Batavia High School in 1940, earned an associate degree from LaSell Junior College in 1942, and received her RN degree from the University of Rochester School of Nursing in 1945.  Mrs. Church worked as a nurse at Genesee Memorial Hospital and later was a director of The Homemakers Service in Genesee County.  She also worked in the social services departments at the Batavia Nursing Home and Genesee Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Church and her husband Maynard were long-time residents of Stafford on the Fargo Road in the house they built.  She was active in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (Stafford) for decades.  She also was involved in voter services, had been a member of the former Conversation Class of Batavia, played bridge avidly and supported many community efforts as a volunteer throughout her life.  Most importantly, Mrs. Church unfailingly and unselfishly gave her time and energy to her family and friends, showing a genuine concern for everyone.

She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Church and son-in-law Jonathan Gaines of Bronxville, NY; two step-granddaughters, Rebecca Lucas (Chris) and Laura Jofre (Jaime); and nieces and nephews Lawrence Schultz (Melissa), Caroline Schultz, Rick Church (Eileen), Tom Church (Sheri), Ann Richards (Gary Mirando), S. Grant Richards (Suzy), and John Willand (Peggy Carter).

Mrs. Church was predeceased by her husband, Maynard; her sister, Charlotte Schultz; and her nephew, Peter Schultz.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22nd at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 6188 Route 5, Stafford.  Burial will be in Grand View Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 6188 Route 5, Stafford, NY 14143 or United Memorial Medical Center Foundation, 127 North Street, Batavia, NY 14020. Mark R. Zetterberg, 61, of Batavia, passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at Monroe Community Hospital.

Mark was born August 24, 1959, in Batavia, son of the late Roger C. and Patricia Sliker Zetterberg.

Mark was a graduate of Pembroke Central High School Class of 1978. He was a dedicated member of the East Pembroke Fire Department, Fire Police and former Commissioner of the East Pembroke Fire District; and member of the Sportsmen’s Club.
Mark enjoyed woodworking, fishing, playing cards and especially going to Bingo with his Mom.

Mark is survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.

Family and friends may call Saturday, May 29, 2021 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the C. B. Beach & Son Mortuary, Inc., 4 East Main Street, Corfu. A prayer service will follow at 3 p.m. Mark will be laid to rest with his beloved parents in the North Pembroke Cemetery in Mogadore, where Mark grew up. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him

Alabama - Brian Michael Urban, 68, of Alabama passed away on Wednesday (May 12, 2021) at his home.

Mr. Urban was born June 9, 1952 in Batavia, a son of the late Clyde and Eleanor (Moodie) Urban.

Brian grew up in Darien Center and graduated from Alexander Central School. He proudly served his country with the Marine Corps and was discharged as an E-5 Sergeant. He showed an aptitude for things mechanical at an early age, building go-karts when he was only 12 years old. His mechanical skills led him to own and operate Urban Automotive in Basom for over 40 years. Mr. Urban enjoyed being involved with anything automotive and served as a "crew chief" for several of his children as they raced cars. He was old school and enjoyed old movies and records.

He is survived by his children, Phillip (Arden Izzo) Urban, Douglas (Sarah Evans) Urban, both of Buffalo, Bonnie (Shawn) Thompson of West Seneca, Sara (Joshua) Benson of Georgia, and Thomas (Shannon Murray) Urban of Shelby; a step-daughter, Jillian (Rory) Charcholla of Rochester; brothers, Douglas Urban of North Carolina, Scott (Sandy Wohlers) Urban of South Carolina; sisters, Sherry (Don) Polack of Oregon, Vicki (late Richard) Streiff of Brockport, Wendy (late Tom) Berg of Iowa, and Janice (Mike) Cadieux of Minnesota. Six grandchildren also survive.  

Brian is preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Urban.

James M. Karas, 64, of Batavia passed away on May 13, 2021. He was born on March 14, 1957 in Batavia to the late Joseph (Clara Jachimowicz) Karas. He is preceded in death by his brother Joseph Karas.

Jim was an avid reader, huge sports fan, he loved the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Orioles. He was a kind man that would do anything for anyone.

He is survived by his sister Victoria (Mark) Shea of Youngstown, NY, along with several nieces and nephews.

Batavia – Robert “Bob”  B.  Carleton, 65, of Batavia passed away on Saturday, May 8, 2021 at Rochester General Hospital.

Mr. Carleton was born Monday, May 23rd, 1955 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, a son of the late Percy "Pat" Carleton and Joyce Capp Carleton.

A devoted father and grandfather, Bob sacrificed much so his family would not be without. He loved baseball and took pride in cheering on his sons while they played. Bob was also an avid reader and book collector, who especially enjoyed browsing the shelves of the Richmond Memorial Library in Batavia. If not watching baseball or reading, he could be found lounging in his backyard pool, even on the coldest of days.

Bob is survived by his three sons and their partners, Nicholas and Andrea Carleton of Rochester, William Carleton and his fiancée Courtney Yachanin of Phoenix, Arizona, and Michael and Stephanie Carleton of Batavia; three grandchildren, Myles Miller and Macklyn and Merritt Carleton; the mother of his children, Lynn Carleton of Rochester; his brother, Bruce Carleton of Canada; his sister, Virginia Wescott of South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his sister, Shirley Melachrinoudis.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Bob on Saturday, June 19th, 2021 at the Pavilion at Lakeside Beach State Park, 13691 Roosevelt Highway, Waterport, New York 14571. East Bethany - Rex  Joseph  Forkey, Jr., age 64, of East Bethany  passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 10, 2021 at his home.

He was born Monday, July 2, 1956 in Batavia, a son of the late Rex Joseph Forkey, Sr. and Mary Larson Forkey.

A graduate of Batavia High School, Rex worked for 43 years at P.W. Minor in Batavia, retiring in 2018. A fan of the Buffalo Bills and New York Giants, he was an avid bowler who loved to fish and hunt and raced enduro cars at the local racetracks.  Rex loved being with his family and will be remembered as a fantastic cook who thoroughly enjoyed grilling and barbecuing.

Rex is the husband of Neva M. Forkey. They were married on March 26, 1977 and celebrated 44 years of marriage together. He is also survived by his children;  Stacey (Michael) Bezon and Jason (Fiancée Michelle Gardner) Forkey both of Batavia; three grandchildren; Christopher D. Zajaczkowski and Alivia and Zalina Forkey; three sisters; Sharon (Daniel) Kuert  of Missouri and Charlene (Dennis) Schultz and Terri (Dan) Schultz, both of Elba along with many nieces and nephews.

Mary Elizabeth Butler, age 80, was called home by the Lord on Sunday May 9th, 2021.

Mary was born February 9th, 1941 in Elba, NY to the late Charles and Violet Ross.

Mary is survived by her loving husband John Butler of 22 years, Charles Giummo; her son, Theresa Hume; her daughter; her grandchildren Alicia (Justin) Watson, Katrina (Joseph) Schultz, Erica (Dallas) Logsdon, Alex Carney, and Sebastian Carney; her sisters Thelma Welch and Carol Hoak; many great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews; she shared a special bond with her niece Elizabeth Welch.

She is predeceased by her parents; her brothers George Ross and Albert Ross; and her first husband Lawrence Giummo.

Mary loved spending time with her family and friends. She was the baby of her family and loved her siblings dearly. She was a social butterfly and loved to talk for as long as you would let her. She had a great sense of humor and made everyone laugh, the best part is she never knew just how funny she was. She was always honest and never compromised who she was. She had a beautiful, childlike spirit and did not believe in keeping secrets. She loved her country music and on summer days you could usually hear Conway Twitty singing out of her window. She was truly one of a kind.

Her loss leaves an unfillable void in the hearts of her family. She will be dearly missed, but comfort is found knowing that she is in Heaven. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” John 3:16 NIV

She will never be forgotten.

Frank Paul Markwica passed away peacefully on May 7, 2021, at the age of 82, in Conroe, Texas surrounded by family. Frank attended Elba Central School; kindergarten through his senior year. He was involved in student council and excelled in football and basketball. Two years after graduation he married his high school sweetheart, Leah Townsend, and was married for 43 years.

After high school, Frank worked at the Elba muck, Batavia Downs, and RR Gamble as a salesman. He and his partners eventually purchased Gambles and ran the business until they sold it in 1997.

Frank was a longtime and current member of the Elks Club and the Polish Falcons.  He was a former member of the Lions Club.

Frank and Leah divided their time between Batavia and Fort Myers, Florida. After Leah's passing, he spent his time in Barker, New York, Conroe, Texas, and Tuscon, Arizona.

He is preceded in death by his wife Leah Townsend Markwica, parents Mary and Peter Markwica, and infant brother Peter. He is survived by his daughter Trina (Dave) Almas of Conroe, Texas, granddaughter Julianna Almas of Denton, Texas, brother John Markwica of Rochester, New York, sister Lousie (Bob) Pattridge of Cleveland, New York, sister Bernice (Lary) Bateman of Byron, New York, and brother Bernerd (Carol) Markwica of Elba, New York along with many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to a funeral service to be held at St. James Episcopal Church, 405 East Main Street, Batavia, on Tuesday, May 18 at 11 am, followed by burial at Grandview Cemetery, Batavia.

Byron - JoAnn Leaton, 78 of Byron, passed away on Monday, (May 10, 2021) at her home under the care of her loving family and HomeCare & Hospice.

Mrs. Leaton was born January 2, 1943 in Oakfield, a daughter of the late Clarence and Mary (Panek) Sumerski.

JoAnn is the wife of David Leaton of Byron; mother of Melody (Donald) Frisby of LeRoy, Tammy Stremvoght, Stacy Woodrich, Patrick Woodrich all of Batavia, and Linda (Barry) DeLong of Tennessee; mother-in-law of Bud Hoffmeister of Warsaw; sister of Ben Sumerski of Batavia. 12 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild also survive.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Hoffmeister, and a sister, Anita (late Rich) Wyder.

Mary Elizabeth Gebel Perry, On her 75th Mother's Day, 9 May 2021, Mary left the material world and joined her husband, Nicholas Perry, son Chester and granddaughter Barbara in Heaven. Catherine Perl Gebel and Leo Gebel welcomed their blue-eyed daughter to the world on September 25, 1925. As the eldest of 6 children ( Mary, Evelyn, Teresa, John, Ann, Clarine), Mary could often be seen in the fields of the Gebel dairy farm leading a team of horses. She always preferred farm work over house work. The grit and perseverance that she demonstrated as a child would remain with her for her entire life.

She married Nicholas Perry on 7 October 1944 and the two of them purchased their dairy farm on Bartz Road in Sheldon and would eventually have 15 children, 37 grandchildren and 48 great grandchildren. Mary has always displayed photos of her offspring in her home and loved to show visitors her pride and joy. John (Cheryl), Catherine, Nicholas (Donna), Leon (Becky), Elizabeth, Rita, Chester, Vincent (Monica), David (Kathy), Michael (Carol), Joan Namenek (James), Bernard, Nelson, Joseph (Chris) and Monica Zielenski (Kevin). She was fondly called Aunt by many nieces and nephews.

In January 1947, their house burned down. They escaped with their 2 oldest children and lost everything else. After that, Mary had little interest in material things. She had embroidered 15 pairs of pillowcases prior to marriage and found that she couldn't continue to embroidery. However, she did love to crochet and made hundreds of afghans and hats for family members and charity. She also loved playing cards and all family events centered around the card playing table. She was a shrewd card player all the way to the end.
