Joseph G. Battaglia, III

Batavia - Joseph G. Battaglia, III, 82 of Batavia, passed away on Monday, (February 7, 2022) at home.

Mr. Battaglia was born May 17, 1939 in Batavia,a son of the late Joseph P.  Battaglia, II and Lucille (Hale) Battaglia.

He was a former parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Batavia. He enjoyed the horses, football, gardening - especially tomatoes, and raising chickens.

Surviving are his daughters, Tina Marie (Clarence) Winspear of Cameron, North Carolina, LuAnne Battaglia of Lockport, and Jolene Battaglia of Chili; his companion, Hazel Preedom of Batavia; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Joe is preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph G. Battaglia, IV; a brother, Michael Battaglia; and a sister, Rose Marie Monte.

Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street in Batavia. Mrs. Florence L. Speed

Batavia - Mrs. Florence L. Speed, 101, of Batavia, a long time resident of Elba and graduate of Batavia High School, Class of 1938, passed away Sunday (February 13, 2022) at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia.

Mrs. Speed was born July 7, 1920 in West Bethany, the daughter of the late Thomas and Lorene (Rafter) Galliford.

She is the predeceased by her husbands, Rudolph P. Richenberg in 1975 and Anson J. Speed in 2000; a son, John M. Richenberg in 1998. She is the sister of the late George Galliford, Thomas Galliford, Herbert Galliford, Isabel Mitterling, Evalena McGee, Mary Lambert, Mabel Hilken, Ruth Reamer, and J. Daniel Galliford.

Surviving is her daughter, Debra (Ronald) Bonczyk; daughter-in-law, Linda Richenberg; grandchildren, Ramona (fiancé Kaz Falco) Richenberg, Kathy Richenberg, Alicia (fiancé Michael McDonald) Bowen; sisters-in-law, Martha Richenberg, and Clara Galliford.

Florence is a former member of the Presbyterian Church of Elba, Elba Fire Department Ladies’ Auxiliary, the Historical Society of Elba, the Elba Grange, and the Home Bureau. She was a bus driver for Elba Central School for many years.

Family and Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street in Batavia, where Florence’s Funeral Service will immediately follow visitation at 6:00 p.m. Burial in Maple Lawn Cemetery in Elba will be private. Geraldine K. Johnson

Geraldine K. Johnson, 80 of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Monday (February 14, 2022) at Strong Memorial Hospital.

She was born May 21, 1941 in Batavia, NY, a daughter of the late Floyd and Georgianna Tenny Geitner.

Geraldine was employed by the Batavia City School District where she was a teacher aide for several years prior to her retirement. She enjoyed her time there and the children she interacted with. She loved to dance and care for her home, especially the gardening. She also enjoyed cooking. Most of all she will be known for her love she showed for her family and the enjoyable moments spent with them.

Survivors include her son, Larry Dean Johnson of East Pembroke. Daughter, Jacqueline Lee (Daniel) Surdyk of Canandaigua. Grandsons, Daniel Francis (Sara) Surdyk III and expected great-grandson of Minnesota, Shawn-Dean Surdyk of Colorado and Colton Lee Surdyk of Colorado. Sister, Gloria Klosner of Batavia. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was the wife of the late Ervin Dean Johnson who passed away in 2003 and sister of the late Patricia (Sam) Carrubba.

Family and friends may call Wednesday (Feb. 16th) from 4-8pm at the J. LEONARD McANDREW FUNERAL HOME, LLC, 2 BOGUE AVE., BATAVIA. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, 10am at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, Church St., East Pembroke. Geraldine will be laid to rest in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Lorraine Susan Anderson

Lorraine Susan Anderson, age 60, of Batavia NY, passed away on Monday, January 31st, 2022, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester after a brief and brave battle with cancer. She was born in Niagara Falls, NY on July 1, 1961. Lori was a 1979 graduate of Elba Central School and received her A.S. in Accounting from Genesee Community College in 1981. She was employed as a mail clerk at G.C.C. for the past 24 years.  Lori also was the bookkeeper for her husband’s business, Anderson’s Appliance Repair.

Lori was well known for loving butterflies and the color purple.  She was an avid crafter and talented art quilter. Lori was an active member of the Museum Quilt Guild and Art C Girlz groups of Batavia where she always looked forward to showcasing her work at their quilt shows and participating in their classes and retreats.  Lori also enjoyed photography, gardening in her backyard, researching her family genealogy, and searching for signs of bigfoot in Salt Fork, Ohio.  Her caring and thoughtful personality will be forever loved and missed by all.

She is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, William Anderson; her two children, Bethany (Benjamin) Gillard of Lancaster and Bryan (Allison) Anderson of Fairport; her beloved grandson, Luke Anderson; her parents, Lawrence Cassatt of Batavia, and Shirley Cassatt of Batavia; her siblings, Lawrence (Patricia) Cassatt of Elba and Cindy (Robert) Elliott of Batavia; as well as many other family members and friends.

Keeping with Lori’s request, a celebration of her life will be held at a park at a later date.

Robert J. "Jake" Ludwig, II

Robert  J. "Jake" Ludwig, II, 77, of Byron, passed away on February 11, 2022 at United Memorial Medical Center.

Jake was born September 14, 1944 in Danville, Illinois, a son of the late Robert J. and Elsie (Leverich) Ludwig.

Jake was a member of the North Bergen Presbyterian Church, where he was a past elder and trustee.  He was the superintendent of the North Byron Cemetery and a supervisor for Eastman Kodak, having retired in 2000.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Sharon (Lewis) Ludwig; children, Lisa A. Ludwig and Todd R. Ludwig; grandchildren, Austin (Mary Kelkenberg) Ludwig, Kyle (Karley) Ludwig, Jordon Ludwig and Jarrod Ludwig and great-grandchildren, Maysen and Easton Ludwig.  

Preceded in death by his sister, Eleanor "Sue" Nellis.

There are no prior calling hours.  Jake's Memorial Service will be on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the North Bergen Presbyterian Church, 7068 North Bergen Road, Bergen.  Jake will be laid to rest in North Byron Cemetery at a later date.

Mr. James Brent Marvin, Sr.

Batavia - James Brent Marvin, Sr., 92 of Batavia  passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2022 at Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw.

Mr. Marvin was born Wednesday, March 20th, 1929 in Farmers Valley, Pennsylvania a son of the late Robert James Marvin and Leah Garnet Weimer Marvin. 

James is predeceased by his late wives, Irma Johnston Marvin and Viola Carter Marvin and his longtime companion, Stephanie "Stevie" Sage.

Surviving are his children, Rebecca (Andrew) Smith of Batavia, Daniel (Joyce) Marvin of Ocala, Florida, Debra Delude of Delevan, Lora (Dan Hoffman) Morgan of Batavia and  Nancy Emerson of Batavia; step-daughters, Beverly Audsley of Vermont and Shirley Lacy of Wyoming. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren,43  great-grandchildren, 24 great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. 

He is the father of the late James Marvin, Jr. who passed away on March 21, 1992, grandfather of the late Jonathan Brent Marvin who passed away on October 31, 2015, brother of the late Keith, Jack and Ronald Marvin, Madelon McArthur, Maxine Brewer and Onalee Baker. 

Friends may call on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 from 6 pm to 8 pm and on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 from 11 am to 12 pm at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main Street (Please use School Street Entrance). Clara Ann Hargrave

Byron ~ Clara Ann Hargrave, age 80, formerly of the Byron-Holley Road, passed away Friday afternoon (February 11, 2022) at The Highlands at Brighton in Rochester.

     She was born October 26, 1941 in Wheeling, W. Virginia, a daughter of the late George and Catherine Manion Stein.

     Clara will be remembered as a very kind and warm person, who enjoyed visiting with family and friends.

     She is survived by her “adoptive family”, Dawn Brinson-Sprague (David Sprague) and their children, Chenoa (Charles) Carson, Michael Brinson Jr., Dan Sprague, Doug Sprague, Cory Sprague, Kayla (Luis) Martinez and Samantha Sprague; close friend, Glenn Hughes, along with many nieces and nephews.

     In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter, Brenda Lee.

     A graveside service for Clara will be held in the Spring at the Stafford Rural Cemetery.

Florence Giuliano

Florence Giuliano of East Bethany passed away on February 11, 2022 at Rochester General Hospital. She was born in Rochester, New York on January 12, 1941 to Patsy & Jenny Giuliano of East Rochester, New York.

Flo was predeceased by her parents and her brother Simon. She leaves behind her son Mark (Alta) Giuliano; grandson Sonny (Maria Lopez-Whitney) Giuliano; Sister-in-law Ann Giuliano, along with  many nieces and nephews.

Flo retired from the Batavia City School District at Robert Morris Elementary where she worked for many years and was beloved by the students and faculty she enjoyed so much. Her loss is felt throughout the entire family and she will be missed greatly. Her kindness and selflessness will be remembered by all.

Ted Curly Cole

  Ted Curly Cole, 84, of Greece, formerly of Batavia passed away on February 7, 2022 at Highland Hospital. He was born in Rock Mountain, North Carolina on January 2, 1938 to Mr.  & Mrs. Victor & Leola Cole,

He grew up truly understanding the importance of family as one of the ten Cole children. Ted was predeceased by three of his brothers; Mr. Walker Cole, Mr. Allen Cole, and Mr. Wydell Cole, and five sisters; Ms. Addie-Mae Cole, Mrs. Bonndie Gaymon, Mrs. Victoria Reese, Ms. Leola Cole, and Pastor Hazel Tucker. He leaves behind his beloved sister Mrs. Betty Martin, brother in law U.J. (Annie Ruth) Jones, and sister in law Dorothy Billington.

Ted and his wife Bernice were married in 1957 and had seven children together; Ellouise Evans (Victor-predeceased), Michael Cole (Betsy), Helen Allen (Cyrus-Predeceased), Curtis Cole, Gregory Cole-predeceased, Timothy Cole- predeceased, and Jeffery Cole (Liz). He also leaves behind seven grandchildren; Marya, Darius, Kristen, Sierra, Kiesha, Dominique, Labue, Gregory, Stephen, Bunnie, Connie, Kan, Trevor, Jeff Jr. Jordan, Craig, and Tobot. He also leaves behind over twenty-three great grandchildren, and a whole host of nieces and nephews.

His loss is felt throughout the entire family and he will be missed eternally. The comfort to the family comes with knowing he was reunited with his wife, children, and family.

Vivian A. "Ting" Taggert

Batavia - Vivian A.  Taggert, "Ting", age 60, longtime employee at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia, passed away on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at her home.

She was born on Thursday, September 28th, 1961 in Hammond, Indiana a daughter of the late Leo F. Taggert and Florine A. Brumsted Taggert.

Vivian who was affectionately known as "Ting" loved to walk, listen to WBTA Radio and watch Channel 7 News. She enjoyed taking trips to the 1000 Islands and will be remembered for her infectious laugh. She enjoyed Friday evening dinners with her granddaughter Emma, who was the light of her life, at Sport of Kings Restaurant and their shopping trips to Wal-Mart and Dollar General.


Surviving are her daughter, Stephanie Lapp of Lockport; her granddaughter who affectionately called her "Nanni", Emma Sponaugle of Lockport; her fiancé, John Dumar of Batavia; her siblings, Vickie Tost of Oakfield, Edward (Audrey) Taggert of Batavia, Randy (Peggy) Taggert of Ontario, Douglas (Christine) Taggert of Hornell, and her twin brother, Kevin Taggert of Greece, along with several nieces and nephews.

Larry A. Andrews

LeRoy ~  Larry A. Andrews, age 79, of Summit Street, passed away Saturday afternoon (February 5, 2022) at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia.

     He was born January 3, 1943 in Springville, N.Y., a son of the late Bernell and Louise Vogt Andrews Sr.

     Larry will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and dear friend.  He cherished his time spent with family and friends, especially when they’d get together at Silver Lake.

     He will be sadly missed by his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Maryja Maksymiw Andrews; his children, William (Peggy) Andrews, Angela (Patrick) Kennedy and Krista (Todd) Goff; grandchildren, Kaetlyn Andrews; Bailey, Teagan (Tommy), Farryn Kennedy; Eden and Ava Goff; siblings, Peter, Ken, John Andrews , along with many nieces, nephews and close friends.

     In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by many brothers and his sister.

Sharon Manes

Sharon Manes, 77, of Batavia, passed away on January 12, 2022 at Premier Genesee Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Batavia.

Sharon was born September 23, 1944 in Alexander, a daughter of the late Frank and Ruth (Zimnick) Hellerman.

Sharon enjoyed crafting, pottery, painting and calligraphy.

Surviving are her son, Dana (Jayne) Manes of Batavia; a brother, David Hellerman of Florida; a sister, Barbara (Jim) Manes of Oakfield; grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Sharon is predeceased by her son, Scott Manes.  

Sharon's Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm (please note the change in service time from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm) on Saturday at St. Anthony's, 114 Liberty Street in Batavia.

Susan J. Schuler

Batavia - Susan J.  Schuler, 62 of Batavia passed away on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at Strong Memorial Hospital.

She was born Tuesday, July 14th, 1959 in Batavia, a daughter of the late William Covington and Jean Robbins Covington.

A dedicated employee at Steve's Styles in Batavia, she devoted much of her life to her clients and was a member of City Church. Sue loved visiting her children and spending time with her granddaughters, Avery and Charlee Sue. She enjoyed tending to her gardens and flower beds with meticulous detail, going to flea markets and antiquing.

Surviving are her children, Brandon (Ashlee Hoban) Schuler of Riva, Maryland and Alicia (Shawn) Montgomery of Tehachapi, California; granddaughters, Avery Schuler and Charlee Sue Montgomery; Brandon and Alicia's father, Kelly Schuler of Batavia; step-sons, Bret (Lee) Russell of Landsdale, Pennsylvania and Kyle (Yvonne) Russell of Hampton, Maine; her sisters, Claudia (Hal) Mitchell of Buffalo and Robin (David) Drawdy of Charleston, South Carolina; her niece, Kaitlyn (Matthew) Rogalski of Buffalo; her sister-in-law, Jeanne Covington of Ocala, Florida and her lifelong companion and loving dog Bear.

She is predeceased by her brother, Thomas Covington and his daughter, Sheryl Marie Covington.

Chuck Tomaszewski

Chuck Tomaszewski, 59, of Batavia passed away February 7th, 2022 in the company of his 2 daughters and his best friend. He was born on December 9, 1962 in Batavia to Arthur and Rose (Courchaine) Tomaszewski.

Chuck was a very loved Father, brother, son, friend, Dziadzia and community member. Chuck coached many as a football coach at Notre Dame high school for 17 years. He was also the spirited lead singer of the band Unruly. He loved being on stage and entertaining people. He was always singing, laughing, and having fun. And who could ever forget that smile!

He is survived by his brother and 2 sisters, his 2 loving daughters, Jennifer (Cain) Catino and Jenell (Brandon) Miller, 8 grandchildren that were the light of his life and many, many friends that he considered family. 

There will be no prior calling hours or Services. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Leona M. Pastore

  After a journey of 94 years as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, Leona M. Pastore passed away peacefully Sunday February 6, 2022 surrounded by her loving family.

Born December 21, 1927 in Batavia, Leona is predeceased by her husband of 70 years; Philip P. Pastore Jr.; her parents Leo and Mary (Fabio) Azzi; in-laws Mr. & Mrs. Philip Pastore Sr.; brother Charles Azzi; sisters Veronica Martin, Matilda Syracuse, Barbara Leone and great-granddaughter Delilah Rae Graham.

She is survived by her six children; Michael (Nancy) Pastore of Key West, FL., Paulette Pontillo of North Palm Beach, FL., Georgeann (David) Hartman of Nashville, TN., Phyllis (Timothy) Beers Sr. of Denver, CO., Patricia Olverd of Richmond Hill, GA, Vincent (Kayleen) Pastore of Le Roy; Aunt Lena Pastore of FL.; sister Virginia Bass of CA; grandchildren Micah Pastore, Timothy (Gretchen) Pastore, Alysia (David) Thibault, Jamie Wortzman, Tony Pontillo, Philip Pontillo, Gary Call Hanley, Timothy (Sara) Beers Jr., Georgia Lee (Marc) Graham, Jessica (David) Blum, Ashley (Jared) Parkey and David Olverd Jr. along with several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Leona’s favorite quote was “Life is a Song, Love is the Music”. Her love of music began at the age of seven in a performance of “The Little Drummer Boy” and at eleven years of age she joined the St. Anthony’s Senior Choir, becoming a soloist performing at all church functions. In her senior year she became the soloist with The Choristers of Rochester Civic Orchestra, where she sang for multiple organizations, churches and functions throughout the state.

After graduation from High School she went on to study at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. where she majored in voice. Upon finishing college, she married her husband and began raising her family, all while remaining active in her church and St. Anthony’s School, where she became President of the PTA. Continuing with her love of music she became the guest soloist for the Genesee Symphony, produced and performed on WBTA Radio with her own show, was the soloist for the “Genesee Choral” and “Ars Nova Singers”.  She also became an organist for St. Anthony’s Church and appeared in many Rotary Club Broadway local productions, Brigadoon, Mame, Camelot, Sound of Music and others.

She became involved with the Genesee Symphony Orchestra and served on the board for many years also becoming the Historian from 2003-2013 and chaired the Diamond Jubilee 60th Anniversary. Leona was recognized as an outstanding Italian American by the Paolo Busti Foundation for her accomplishments in music and was associated with the author John Gardner Society and a member of the Holland Land Office.
