Beaver Island, Michigan - Dennis Onofrio Monachino, age 68, died suddenly on December 21, 2022 on Beaver Island, Michigan.

He was born on June 7, 1954 in Batavia. He is predeceased by his parents, Pat C. and Mary Ellen (McDonough) Monachino.

Dennis is survived by his loving daughter, Crystal Brook Monachino; step-daughter, Carla King and her children, Rhonda, Godfrey, Damien and Austin King; step-grandson Brandon Bragg, Jr. who is predeceased by his father, Brandon Bragg, Sr.; siblings, Cynthia, Julie, Patrick (Anne Marie) and Thomas (Daun) Monachino; his companion, Eileen Woolford-Ballard; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nephews and a grand-niece.

Dennis traveled the world on his terms. He grew up in Batavia, then lived and worked in LeRoy, St. Augustine, Florida, Fort Wayne Indiana and settled in Beaver Island, Michigan. His spirit of adventure took him to faraway places like Australia and New Zealand. Dennis was an accomplished musician and artist. He regularly entertained family, friends and local audiences on Beaver Island with his superb guitar playing and singing. He shared his drawings with all who appreciated his art. His generosity and commitment to family were well known as was his love for, and mastery of, motorcycling, boating, antiquing, music and horsemanship.

Dennis was a jack-of-all-trades who loved to build and rebuild anything motorized and mobile. He worked as a local and long-haul truck driver as well as an international importer/exporter. In retirement he returned to his beloved Beaver Island-the island that captured his heart as a boy-where he owned and rode horses and sailed Lake Michigan.

Batavia - Margaret Kelley, 98 of Batavia, passed away on Tuesday, (January 10, 2023) at Elderwood at Hamburg in Hamburg.

Mrs. Kelley was born July 16, 1924 in Binghamton, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Zelynak.

The youngest of 12 children, Margaret was a devoted wife and mother. Her family was truly her life. 

Margaret is the wife of  the late Truman E. Kelley.

Surviving are her children, Patricia Kelley of Hamburg, and Timothy (Crysty) Kelley of South Carolina. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Batavia - Kathleen  "Kathy"  Hopkins, 68  of Oakfield passed away on Friday, January 13, 2023 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Kathy was born Saturday, April 3rd, 1954 in Buffalo, NY, daughter of the late Victor and Theodora (Switek) Rydzynski.

She was a member of the Oakfield volunteer fire department for over 20 years. Kathy loved spending time with her family, decorating for the holidays (both inside and out), and hosting family holiday dinners.

Kathy graduated from the John F. Kennedy High School and married David Hopkins, who predeceased her in 2001. She loved her job as a teachers Aide for Oakfield-Alabama Central school until the day she retired.

Kathy was a loving wife, a caring and compassionate mother, and affectionate grandmother. She is survived by her husband Russell Young; Children, Dennis (Shana) Hoy, Christopher Hoy and Tracy Minor; Stepchildren, Will (Julie) Young and Michael (Holly) Young; a brother, Dennis Rydzynski; grandchildren, Matt Minor, Andrew Minor, Kayla Hoy, Skylar Hoy, Haylee Hoy, Emersyn Dyer, Drake Dyer, Alexander Hoy, Michael Hoy, Ashlee Young, and Haylee Young; brother in law, Jake (Peg) Fager, Robert (Linda) Young, and Mark (Janine) Young; her fur buddy, Radar, and and many nieces and nephews.

Kathy is predeceased by her husband David Hopkins; sibling, Donald (Arlene) Rydzynski, and her loving parents.

Batavia- Sue R. Arnold, 80 of Batavia passed away on Friday, January 13th, 2023 at Premier Genesee Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Batavia, NY after a lengthy illness.

She was born Friday, October 23rd, 1942 in Elmira, NY a daughter of the late Raymond and Minnie (Calkins) Kline. Sue graduated from Batavia High School in 1961. She met her husband , Edward Arnold in 1964, cruising around Batavia. Sue said “ he was the best looking guy she had ever seen in his 59 Ford Galaxy”. They were married in November of 1968.

Sue worked for many years at Genesee Hardware in Batavia and enjoyed socializing with all her customers. She loved country life and enjoyed baking, canning, & sewing. Her passion was her vegetable and flower gardens. She also devoted her time to her dogs and grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Minnie Kline, sisters, Trudy Werner and Gladys Confer, and brother Edward Gifford.

She is survived by her husband, Edward Arnold, her sons, Jerald (Kim) Arnold, and Jeff (Stacey Stachowski) Arnold, her grandchildren, Cody (Catelin Andrews) Arnold, Casey ( Leah Thompson) Arnold, Carley Arnold, Brandon Arnold, Bradly ( Sara Zakes) Arnold and several nieces / nephews.

Batavia - Betty J. "Boogie" Morgan Luperino, age 83, passed away on Friday, December 30, 2022 at the LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home.

She was born on May 11, 1939, in Warsaw, a daughter of the late Charles Morgan and Florence Burse Morgan.

A 1957 graduate of Notre Dame High School, Betty graduated from the Catherine McCauley School of Practical Nursing in 1959. An LPN at the former St. Jerome Hospital, Betty also did spiritual care at area hospitals following her retirement. Betty was a member of St. Joseph's Church, board member and trustee emeritus of The Jerome Foundation, volunteer and former board member for St. Jerome Guild and volunteer at Crossroads House.
 
Betty took pride in being a nurse; she was a true caregiver.  She loved being with others whether it was a Notre Dame get together, meal with friends, or visiting with family and friends.  Betty was known for enjoying a good story and a good laugh.  She was a wonderful Aunt to her nieces and nephews; she was a big part of their lives that they are grateful for.  Telling stories of growing up with Aunt Betty always ends with laughter and love.

Her husband, Joseph J. Luperino, passed away on December 23, 2007.

She is survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She is the sister of the late Kenneth (Virginia) Morgan, Mary Louise (Leonard) Iannello, Phyllis (John) Mulcahy and Donald (Kay) Morgan.

There are no prior visiting hours. Betty's Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 20, 2023 at 11 am at St. Joseph's Church, 303 East Main Street, Batavia. Pembroke - Clarence D. Crawford, 91, of Pembroke passed away on January 11, 2023 after a brief illness.  

Known to most by his middle name, Denzil, he was born in West Virigina on August 15, 1931 to Clarence and Lucille Crawford.  

Denzil worked most of his adult life at Sylvania, in Batavia.  In the late 1970’s he and his late wife Faith (Switzer) entered into a partnership to operate the True Value hardware store in Corfu.  Upon retirement they toured the country in their motor home.

Denzil is survived by his sons Greg (Charlotte) and Bill (Pam).  He is also survived by six loving grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He is preceded in death by his wife, his twin sisters Betty Lou and Bonny Sue, and by his son Lester.

Duane Clarence Cook of Lockport, New York, age 101, passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at Lockport Rehab and Health Care Center.  Mr. Cook was born October 21, 1921 in St. Jerome’s Hospital, Batavia, New York, and was the eldest son of the late Clarence and Nora (Thompson) Cook.  

Mr. Cook grew up on a farm in Indian Falls, New York, and graduated in 1949 from Cornell University with a degree in Agricultural Economics.   He married the love of his life, Shirley Steiner of Crittenden, New York on February 11, 1950.   Mr. Cook later earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University at Buffalo and worked as case supervisor for the Child Protection Unit at the Niagara County Department of Social Services until his retirement in 1978.  

During his 100th birthday celebration last year, Mr. Cook reminisced about how his life growing up on the farm began in the era of the horse and buggy, and included the introduction of electricity, the radio, and automobiles.  He was passionate about history, especially the Civil War era, and was an avid Buffalo Bills fan. 

Mr. Cook is predeceased by Shirley Steiner Cook, who passed away on February 10, 2012.  He is also predeceased by brothers Calvin (late Irene) Cook and Stewart (late Ruth) Cook, and sisters Verna (late Gerry) Reynolds and Leona (late Francis) Harloff.  

Surviving are his brother, Elliott (late Cookie) Cook of Alameda, California, and his children, Douglas (Mona) Cook of Auburn, California and Ginny (Roger) McEldowney of Carefree, Arizona.   

He is also survived by granddaughter Elizabeth (Carter) Navarro of Holliston, Massachusetts, great-grandchildren Alexander and Emily Navarro, and granddaughter Jennyfer Lindsay-Cook of Alameda, California, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

A memorial service and interment will be planned for this summer at Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Corfu, New York.  Arrangements are being made by C.B. Beach & Son Mortuary in Corfu, NY.

  Florence M. Henderson, 78, of Batavia passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Tuesday January 10, 2023. She was born in Batavia on September 25, 1944 to the late Dominic and Marie Cerce. In addition to her parents, Florence is predeceased by her sisters; Louise, Marie and Donna; brothers Donny and Joe.

Florence worked for many years at St. Jerome’s Hospital and United Memorial Medical Center as the Unit Secretary. Upon her retirement she worked for the STA Bus Service.

She is survived by her loving husband; Daniel Henderson; children Bridget (Paul) Ohlson, Nancy (Nate Mancuso) Falker and Daniel (Lori) Henderson; sisters in law Cindy Cerce, Carol (Jim) Vorndran, Peggy (Bob) McVea; grandchildren Christopher (Carrie), Elisa (Dan), Rachel (Joe), Jodee (Kasey), Whitney (Pat), Daniel (Laura), Trey and Lexi; 11 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

LeRoy ~ John C. Zimber passed away on January 8, 2023 after a brief illness.

   

  Born in 1940, John was and lived as a member of the Greatest Generation.  He often said the best times were behind all of us.  John worked at and retired from Rochester Telephone of his entire adult life.  John had many side hustles, from a snowmobile repair shop in Rush, to Milewood construction and Charter Captain.  John lived large and said, that he did about everything he wanted to in life, including a trip to Japan with his young grandkids.

     He asked for little and gave far more.

     John is survived by his “Together Forever” partner of 30 years, Nancy (Miller) Tash; his sister, Karen (Reed) Brown of Michigan; daughter, Sue Ingalls (Cheryll Mitchell); 3 grandchildren, Corey Ingalls (Emily Neth), Jamie (Jordan) Filio and Leslie Ingalls; son, Scott Zimber (Kyoko); 2 grandchildren, Sean Zimber (Momo) and Hana Zimber; along with 4 great-grandchildren, Jaxson, Remi, Macedon and Finley.

     He also leaves behind cousins and too many friends to list.

     At John’s request, there will be no prior visitation.  Family and friends are invited to attend his Rite of Christian Burial to be held on Monday, March 13 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, St. Peter’s Church, 44 Lake St., LeRoy.  Interment will be private in Machpelah Cemetery.

Darien – Frederick “Fred” Henry Maurer, 85, died Sunday, January 8, 2023, peacefully at the Crossroads House surrounded by his beloved family.  He was born May 17, 1937, in Batavia to the late Frederick and Bernardine Maurer. He graduated from Corfu High School in 1955 and married Sharon Anne McGuire and they were married for 58 years.

Fred was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing and passed that love onto his sons.  Later in life, he more appreciated watching nature than actively hunting.  He loved to spend weekends with his wife and family at ‘the cabin.’ He spent many hours watching his children during their sporting events, which then transitioned into his grandchildren’s events.  You could often see him in the parent line picking up his grandchildren.  Fred also held the honor of being a great grandfather.

Fred served in the Coast Guard.  He was a co-owner and co-founder of Sleepy Hollow Lake in Akron and then went on to work at Ferrellgas in Batavia, from where he retired.

Fred is survived by his sister, Bernardine (Tom); sister-in-law Kathleen Federspeil; brother-in-law Mitchell McGuire; his children:  Edward (Sandy); Kenneth (Jennifer); Mark (Brenda); Suanne; Andy; and Katrina (Jeffrey). He also is survived by his grandchildren: Michael (Burgundy), Kyle, Jessica (Corey), Taylor (Brandon), Ashleigh, Alexis, Alexandra (Michael), Adam, Landon and Kalina.  And his great grandchildren: Owen, Jayden, Zoey, Dylan, McKinley, Myla, Ky’Reese, Michael, Trever and Rae.

He is preceded in death by his wife Sharon and son Frederick Henry Maurer III.  
A graveside service will be held at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Crittenden on Thursday, January 12th at Noon. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Crossroads House PO Box 403, Batavia, NY 14021.

Churchville ~ Greg P. Hixenbaugh, age 52, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2023 as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

     He was born March 13, 1970 in Rochester, a son of William L. Hixenbaugh and Mary Catherine Johnston.

   

  Greg will be remembered for his love of family and his sense of humor. He was a proud U.S. Marine veteran.  His love of fitness and training led him down many paths.  He worked at the University of North Carolina coaching, along with working with the local youths in the “Young Marines” Program.  Greg went on to work in the NFL for the Carolina Panthers as their strength and conditioning coach.  At one point in his career, Greg was also a bodyguard for Shaquille O’Neal. 

     In addition to his father, William (Kathy) Hixenbaugh and his mother, Mary Kay Kedian (Joe Duncan), he is survived by his wife, Jennifer Clor Hixenbaugh; daughters, Alyssa Fiacco and Shelby (Robert) Cintron; grandchild, Boone Cintron; siblings, Ken (Michelle) Hixenbaugh, Bill Hixenbaugh, Mike Hixenbaugh, Shari (late Mike) Page and Kevin (Taryn) Hixenbaugh, along with many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Batavia - Richard C. Yasses, 74 of Batavia, passed away on Saturday, (December 24, 2022) at his home in Batavia.

Mr. Yasses was born August 1, 1948 in Batavia, a son of the late Steven and Helen (Bachulak) Yasses.

Richard enjoyed boating and fishing along with spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his matter of fact personality and sense of humor. He was generous and held a genuine love for his step children and their extended family.

Surviving are his step-children, Jamie (Adam) Frappolli of Rochester, and James Palaszynski of Batavia; grandchildren, Kyah Way, and Ada Frappolli; a sister, Rosemarie Yasses of Batavia. Two nieces, two nephews, and many cousins also survive.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley (Barones) Yasses, and brothers, Pete and Joseph Yasses.

Henry (Hank) Kujawski, Sr., 91, of Batavia passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at the Sussman Palliative Care Unit at the University of Rochester Medical Center. 

He was born on October 2, 1931 in Batavia, NY, the youngest child of the late Stanley and Sophia (Weglewska) Kujawski.  Hank graduated from Batavia High School in the class of 1950.  He worked at Kisiel Die Casting, Doehler Jarvis, Massey Harris and Graham Manufacturing before being drafted into the Army in 1955.  Hank was stationed at Fort Dix and served for two years state side in New Jersey at the guided missile base.  He then returned to work at Graham Manufacturing and retired in 1996 as a production manager with 44 years of employment.  Hank was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Church/Ascension Parish and was an active member of it's Holy Name Society.  He was an usher and a dedicated worker at the church lawn fete for many years.  Hank was a member of the Polish Falcons, enjoyed bowling in a league into his seventies and playing cards with family.  He took great pride in taking care of his home and yard, especially meticulously mowing and maintaining his lawn.  Hank looked forward to growing vegetables in his garden every year as well as caring for his grape vines and raspberry bushes. It delighted him to share his harvest and canned goods with neighbors, friends and family.  He was also a talented cook and baker.

Hank was predeceased by his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, Dorothy (Kisiel) Kujawski, who died on November 22, 2008.  They were married at Sacred Heart Church in Batavia on August 8, 1959. He was also predeceased by: brothers John (Florence), Louis, Martin (Florence), Anthony (Natalie), Alphonso (Rose Mary) and Joseph (Mildred); sisters Luella (Karl) Suchy, Helen (Mike) Pigula, Francis (Stuart) Wade and Anna (John) Sass; and brother in-law Harry Malczewski. 

Hank was a loving father, grandfather and father in-law and will be dearly missed by his son, Henry Kujawski, Jr., of Batavia, his daughter, Karen (Stamford) Sherwood of Vero Beach, FL and his only grandchild Dustin Anderson (Preston Whitt) of Washington, D.C.  He is also survived by his sister Marion Malczewski of LakeView, NY and many cherished nieces and nephews. 

Hank's Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 11:00am at Ascension Parish (corner of Swan and Sumner Streets). Interment of ashes with Military Honors will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery in the spring or summer of 2023.

Ronald W. Amberger, 58 of Rochester, passed away peacefully of pneumonia on Friday, January 6, 2023 surrounded by his family at Unity Hospital. He was born April 1, 1964 in Warsaw, to the late John and Faye (Schmidt) Amberger Sr.

One year after High School graduation, Ron was in a horrific car accident, changing his life and the people around him forever. Suffering from major brain trauma and multiple broken bones, Ron spent months in a coma, and years of rehab. There were years of multiple locations and healing after the accident.

Ron was able to touch the lives of many people who were destined to help him. After twenty years of trying to find the proper care for Ron, he was transferred to Pralid where he was finally understood. Eighteen years of love, devotion and commitment, the staff became his new family. Thirty-eight years of this man’s life were spent under the care of doctors, nurses and care workers. The biggest fighter for life anyone would ever know.  

Ron is survived by his brother John (Jeannie Kirch) Amberger Jr., nephew Evan Amberger, niece Shea Amberger, along with a few aunts and cousins.
