Batavia – Mrs. Josephine R. “Jay” Carter, age 93, of Batavia, longtime clerk at the former Marchese Bell Supermarket in Batavia, passed away on Friday, September 1, 2017 at Premier Genesee Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Mrs. Carter was born June 26, 1924 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Nicholas LaFarnara and Josephine Di Maio LaFarnara.

A member of Ascension Parish, she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and was an avid bingo player.

Her husband, Ronald A.  Carter, passed away in1994.

She is survived by her children, Nicholas (Sharon) Carter of Batavia and Carol (Donald) Shephard of Farmington; her brother, John LaFarnara of Batavia; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her brothers and sisters, Pasquale, Anthony, Carmen, Vito, Columba and Mary LaFarnara.

Friends may call on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main Street, Batavia, where members of the Altar and Rosary Society will meet at 3:45 p.m. to recite the rosary. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Ascension Parish, 15 Sumner Street, Batavia. She will be laid to rest in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Batavia.

Richard A. Bridger, 63, of Attica passed away on Tuesday August 29, 2017 at Millard-Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo after a courageous battle with cancer. Richard was born in Buffalo on October 4, 1953 to the late Edward and Florence (Chapple) Bridger. In addition to his parents, Richard is predeceased by his brother Tom Bridger.

Rich loved the outdoors. You would often find him riding his bike around Attica.  He also loved to travel. Rich was a 20 plus year guard and retired from Attica Correctional Facility.

He is survived by his children; Matthew Bridger of Basom, Ashley Bridger of East Pembroke; Fiancé Mary Long of Buffalo; brothers Paul (Kay) Bridger of AZ., and Dave (Dorothy) Bridger of Wilson, NY.

LeRoy ~ Bruce P. Vogel, age 70, of Warsaw Road, passed away Saturday afternoon (August 26, 2017) at Strong Memorial Hospital in the loving presence of his family.

     He was born May 26, 1947 in Buffalo.

     Bruce was an avid "cruiser" and car show enthusiast, who loved his hot rods.  He also enjoyed hunting.

     He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 27 years, Linda Fay Vogel; his brothers, Kirk (Ruth) Vogel of Warsaw and Darryl Vogel of Bennington, along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and dear friends.

Carl L. Aquino, 81 of Batavia passed away on Monday August 28, 2017 at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia. He was born on October 11, 1935 in Batavia to the late Andrew (Bridgette Sepe) Aquino. He is preceded in death by brothers William and Andrew Aquino.  

Mr. Aquino retired as an Electronic Technician at Groveland Correctional Facility in Sonyea. He was an avid golfer, bowler and New York Yankee Fan. Carl was above all else a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.  

He is survived by his beloved wife Priscilla J. (Campbell) Aquino of Batavia; children Linda (Jeffrey) Norris of FL; Mark (Heidi) Aquino of Wheatfield; siblings Frank (Carol) of Elba; Charles (Rosemary) of Batavia; Robert Aquino of Batavia; Mary DiSalvo of Batavia; grandchildren Rachel and Nicholas Aquino, along with many nieces and nephews.

A 12:00 Noon Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday August 31, 2017 at Resurrection Parish 18 Ellicott St. Batavia, NY 14020. He will be entombed in St. Joseph’s Mausoleum, Batavia.

Edward Francis Bartz, 71, a lifelong resident of North Java, died Friday August 25, 2017 after a brief stay in the hospital. Ed was born June 13, 1946, a son of the late Ferdinand and Annabell Bartz. On July 2, 1983 he married Michelle Lefort who preceded him in death on May 6, 2001.

Mr. Bartz was a member of the North Java Volunteer Fire Department and St. Nicholas and Holy Family Parishes. For over 30 years he was employed by the Town of Java. His love of different kinds of wood was apparent as he designed and crafted many pieces of furniture, bowls and ornaments for his family and friends.  He donated several of his items for the auction at Holy Family’s annual spaghetti dinner.

Surviving are four children; Monica (Matthew) Hepler of Emlenton, PA., Emily Bartz of Buffalo, Kimberly (Phillip) Clemmer of Leesburg, FL., and Brian Lefort of Buffalo; a sister Marie (Peter) Ochal and nephew Peter Ochal of Arcade; six grandchildren Taylor, Jolene, Sabrina, Erika, and Orie Hepler of Emlenton, PA., Alex Clemmer of Leesburg, FL., also surviving are several friends and relatives as well as a special childhood friend; Jim George who was never too busy to lend Ed a helping hand.

Shelby G. Sliker, 91, of Leicester passed away peacefully on Friday August 25, 2017 at his home. He was born on August 1, 1926 in Perry, NY to the late Clarence and Gladys (Lines) Sliker. In Addition to his parents, Shelby is predeceased by his siblings; John Sliker and Ethel (William) Martz.

Shelby proudly served his country in the United States Navy. After his service, Shelby was a lifelong farmer along with wife Lois and his parents, raising black angus beef cattle on his century old farm. He was a 4-H Leader for 10 years. As an active member of the First Congregational Church in Perry Center, Shelby held several offices over the years. He was a member of Walter Klein Post 532 American Legion. Shelby was also a 65 plus year member of the Free Masons Constellation Lodge No. 404. Shelby and wife Lois shared 70 years together building more memories than most could hope for.

He is survived by his loving wife; Lois (Wright) Sliker of Leicester; daughter Lisa (Walter) Wolinski of Leicester; grandchildren Melissa (Robb) Yoder of Webster, Caryn (Michael) Van Hook of Ontario, NY., and Michael (Tina) Wolinski of Rochester; sister in law Dorothy Sliker; great-grandchildren Kyrann and Tegann Yoder, Colin and Dylan Van Hook, Jaxson Wolinski along with many nieces and nephews.

Avis J. Weinert, 93, of Byron passed away peacefully on Wednesday August 23, 2017 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. She was born in Bethany, NY on January 10, 1924 to the late Floyd and Ethel (Noakes) Putnam. In addition to her parents, Avis is predeceased by her loving husband William H. Weinert who passed away in 2001; sisters Lorraine Dunham and Irene Baker.

Avis was a long time member of St. Paul’s Church in Stafford, a volunteer at the South Byron Fire Department and the Byron Grange and would always lend a hand with the Red Cross with their blood drives.

She is survived by her children; Keith, Kirk, Kevin Weinert all of Byron, Karl (Marilyn) Weinert of S. Byron, Ruth Ann (Ted) Genegon of Oakfield, Jo Ann Toal of Byron, Sue Ann Cole of Byron, Cheryl Ann (Greg) Richenberg of Holley and Jacqueline Ann (Zeech) Ilazi of Rochester; brother Lawrence Putnam of Warsaw; 19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.

Martin K. Toporczyk, 49, of Darien Center passed away suddenly in Warsaw on Saturday August 19, 2017. Marty was born in Buffalo on December 4, 1967 to the late Daniel M. Toporczyk and his mother Dolores Kleps.

Marty was a mason at Pike Construction.  Marty loved to fish, collect coins, and was an all-around nice guy.  A people person with the gift of gab.  He will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his children Brittany K. Toporczyk of Alden and Morgan K. Toporczyk of Springhill FL., brother Mark Toporczyk (Tonya Hackett) of East Bethany; nephew Brandon K. Toporczyk of California, serving in the U.S. Navy; niece Brianna C. Toporczyk of Alexander; Aunt MaryAnn (Paul) Reese of Arizona; Cousin Jeff Reese of Connecticut; and girlfriend Ann Cox of Warsaw

Sally Ann Kriger, 71, of Attica passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday August 22, 2017 after a long stubbornly fought battle with cancer. She was born in Lackawanna, NY to the late Walter and Jessie (Arndt) LeFort. In addition to her parents, Sally is predeceased by her son Wayne Kriger.

Sally enjoyed antiquing, gardening and will forever be remembered as the rock and caretaker of her family.  

She is survived by her husband of 54 years Norman Kriger; children Peggy (Dale) Knab of Bennington, Bruce (Kristen) Kriger of Attica and Connie (Anthony) LeFort of Alden; grandchildren Kristina, Kristy, Christian, Benjamin, Tiffany and Scarlett along with many other family members.

BONNIE J. CLEVELAND ~ Batavia

Died peacefully Friday August 18, 2017 at the New York State Veterans Home @ Batavia at the age of 95. She was born February 2, 1922 in Placentia, CA a daughter of the late Oscar and Angela (Mansur) Carlson also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert G. Cleveland; son, Donald Cleveland and sister, Shirley Lipps. 

Mrs. Cleveland was raised in California and remained proud of those roots, that is where she met her sweetheart, Robert while he was in the service. His dream was farming, so they came back to the area and the farm where they raised their family, that Cleveland homestead farm is still in the  family some 200 years later. Bonnie worked many years at the Oakfield Bank and enjoyed knitting.           

Surviving are her loving sons, Michael (Lorie) Cleveland of Batavia, Steven (late Barbara) Cleveland of Henrietta; 10 grandchildren, Christine (Jeff) Covel, William (Anita) Cleveland, Michael (Dawn) Cleveland II, Cathy (Derek Bell, MD) Cleveland, John (Melessa) Cleveland, Shannon( (Kevin) Abt, Eric (Stacy) Cleveland, Tara (Erik) Block, Beth (Charles) Wu and Carrie Cleveland; 18 great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

She will be laid to rest with her husband in St. Cecelia's Cemetery. Douglas C. Perfitt, 78, of Oakfield passed away on Saturday August 19, 2017 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. He was born on August 7, 1939 in Batavia to the late Claude and Aletha (Newton) Perfitt.

Doug was involved in numerous organizations including the Oakfield Fire Department in which he served 50 years as a volunteer fireman and treasurer.  He also served as a trustee for the Oakfield Presbyterian Church and as a member on the Oakfield Better Committee which sponsored Labor Daze.  Truly a kid at heart, Doug volunteered many years for the Oakfield-Alabama Little League.  After retiring from United Parcel Service (UPS), he enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and school programs, and loved carpentry work.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years; Ann (Landon) Perfitt; their 5 children Mark (Diane) Perfitt of IN., Nora (the late Patrick) Botsford of CA., Amy (Jim) Klos of Oakfield, Kim (Alan) Sumeriski of TN., and Eric (Lee Ann) Perfitt of Oakfield; 12 grandchildren Tyler, Bradley and Andrew Perfitt; Brooke, Ryan and Chad Botsford; Katie Klos; Kasey and Alicia Sumeriski; Brynne, Brett and McKenzie Perfitt along with several cousins.

John N. 'Jack' Bradbury, age 82 of Le Roy, NY., passed away peacefully early Sunday morning (August 20, 2017) at Strong Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Jack was born June 2, 1935 to R. Ellsworth Bradbury and Mildred Vader Bradbury. He is survived by his wife, Lana Longhini Bradbury. Their devoted marriage of 36 years was a testament of their commitment to one another and the loving journey they shared.

     He was a graduate of Le Roy High School, class of 1953 and Cornell University 1957 where he earned a BS in Agricultural Economics.

     Upon graduation, Jack was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. During his 22 years in the USAF, specializing in air traffic control, he served in several leadership positions, including Squadron Commander in Naples, Italy assigned to the NATO Southern Region. He was stationed in: Mississippi, Maine, Morrocco, New Hampshire, Vietnam, Virginia, California, Italy, Nebraska and retired September 1978 as a Lieutenant Colonel.

     Following a stellar career in the military, Jack and Lana moved to Montreal, Canada, where he served 12 years with the United Nations/International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). He was Chief, Rules of the Air, Air Traffic Services and Search and Rescue (ROCSAR). He promoted safety of international aviation. Jack was actively engaged as a Special Consultant of the 1990 USSR breakup. In October 1991 he retired and returned to the Old Stone House in Le Roy, NY., becoming active in his home town.

     He was a Board Trustee of the Le Roy Historical Society, becoming Vice President. Jack was instrumental in helping commission the Jell-O Museum; Founder and Chairman of the Oatka Creek Watershed Committee; Chairman of the Village Creek Stabilization Committee; Trustee Machpelah Cemetery Association; Le Roy American Legion member; life long member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving on various sessions and committees and enjoyed being President of the Le Roy Seniors Golf League.

     He will be remembered for his passion and love of family, faith and service to his country.

     Mr. Bradbury is survived by his three children: daughter Christine Diane (Harry) Cornelius, grandson, Cameron of Arlington, VA.; son Timothy Noel Bradbury, granddaughter, Savannah Nicole, grandson, Stone Michael of Bellows Falls, VT.; and daughter Linda Ann Bradbury of Harpursville, NY. Two sisters: Nancy B. Aiken of DeWitt, IA., and Bonnie B. (Michael) Murphy of Remsen, NY. Deceased brother and sister; L. E. 'Brad' Bradbury and sister Sonja D. (Ted) Brownell.

     He is also survived by nieces and nephews: Mark (Denise) Brownell, Matthew (Laurisa McAllister) Brownell, Melessa (Shawn) Witkowski, Molly (Jerry) Condello, Steve Aiken, Drs. Bonnie (Bobby) Grigsby, John (Luz Carmona) Franklin, Jim (Sarah) Franklin, LisaNoelle (Mawethu) Ncaca. He is also survived by many great and great great nieces and nephews.

No calling hours. A private family gathering. Interment will be at Machpelah Cemetery, Le Roy, NY.

Paris S. Doward went to rest in paradise on Tuesday August 15, 2017 at Women’s and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. She was born to Tiesha Doward of Batavia and Devon Rodgers of Buffalo.

In addition to her parents, Paris is survived by her grandfather; Raymond Doward of Batavia; grandmothers Vera Williams of Batavia, Stephanie Rodgers of Buffalo, Carolyn Claudio of Batavia; great grandmothers Dollie Williams of Batavia and Mamie Jordan of Buffalo; siblings Anyia Doward of Batavia, Jaedyn Birdsong of Batavia and London Doward of Batavia, Devon Rodgers Jr., Dameer Rodgers, Derion Rodgers, Davante Rodgers, Davion Rodgers, Jaevante Rodgers and Brianna Rodgers all of Buffalo along with a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Bergen - Lorraine K. Alexander, 65, of Bergen, passed away Tuesday, (August 15, 2017) at her home, in Bergen.

Mrs. Alexander was born November 23, 1951 in Massapequa, a daughter of the late Robert and June (Schardt) Trimble.

Lori was a member of the Bergen Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, and enjoyed tending to her flower garden and spoiling her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel J. Alexander, whom she married August 2, 1980; a daughter,  Kathryn (Greg) Swain of Caledonia, grandchildren, Braelyn and Brielle Swain; brothers, Michael (Jeanie) Trimble of FL, and Patrick (late Virginia) Trimble of Long Island; a sister, Leslie (John) Lewis of Long Island; brothers-in-law, Bill (Rachel) Alexander of Lakeville, Larry (Jean) Alexander of North Chili, John (Peg) Alexander of Churchville, Steve (Michelle) Alexander of Alabama; a sister-in-law, Dot Alexander of Chili.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

She was the mother of the late Daniel M. Alexander who died on May 10, 2017 and sister-in-law of the late Jay Alexander.
