Donald W. Kurtz "Kurtzie"

LeRoy ~ Donald W. Kurtz, “Kurtzie”, age 87, of Mill Street, passed away at home early Sunday morning (June 11, 2023) in the loving presence of his family.

     He was born August 24, 1935 in Rochester, a son of the late Joseph and Joanna Kelly Kurtz.

    Don was a lifelong LeRoyan, who will be remembered for his love of family and community.  He was a member of the LeRoy Fire Department, having served as a past chief.  He was also a member of the Excelsior Hook & Ladder Company and the Oatka Fish and Game Club.

Whether Don knew you or not, you could be guaranteed that he would greet you by the term of “partner”, which to him, meant friend.

     He will be sadly missed by his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Janice Finco Kurtz; his daughters, Molly (Michael) Iten and Marcy (Brian) Sage; grandchildren, Alexis (Scott) Tilburg, Jacob Iten and Elijah Iten; future great-grandson, Beau Tilburg, who is expected on Don’s 88th birthday, along with his faithful canine companion, Milly. 

     Family and friends are invited to attend his Rite of Christian Burial to be held on Friday, 

June 16th at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, St. Peter’s Church, 44 Lake Street, LeRoy.  Interment and graveside prayers in St. Francis Cemetery will immediately follow his mass.

     In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to LeRoy Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 56, LeRoy, N.Y. 14482, towards the purchase of a new ambulance. 

     A celebration of life will be held at a later date, to be announced.

Mrs. Marlene Sharp Murphy (nee Cotton)

Marlene Sharp Murphy (nee Cotton), age 87, of Williamsville, formerly of Batavia, died on Oct. 12, 2022, at Elderwood at Williamsville.

Marlene Alice Cotton was born May 1, 1935, in Buffalo, to the late Marsden H. and Maude (nee George) Cotton. She grew up in East Aurora. She married John Edwin “Jack” Sharp on Sept. 15, 1956, and they were together for 33 years until Jack’s death in 1989. They had five children, Joseph, Mary, John, Anne and Thomas, and lived most of their married life in Batavia where they raised their children. Jack was a high school guidance counselor at Oakfield-Alabama Central School. In the late 1990s, Marlene met and married her second husband, John V. “Murph” Murphy, and they were together for several years until Murph’s death in 1999. She later moved to the Buffalo area, residing in Williamsville and North Tonawanda, and lived for more than 10 years with her companion and friend, Donald Markovitz. 

Over the course of her life, Marlene touched many people. She taught ballroom dancing, and liked to sew and quilt, bake and cook, and play bridge. She also sold trees and attended clown school. Marlene worked as a telephone operator, waitress, hostess, and bank teller, and was active in the Genesee Memorial Hospital League, as well as St. Mary’s Parish and St. Joseph’s Parish in Batavia. 

Surviving are her children, Joseph M. (Cindy Thompson) Sharp of Farmingdale, NJ; Mary Sharp Sutula, of League City, TX; Anne Sharp (Mark) Oleksy, of Williamsville; and Thomas E. (John “Bert” Russ) Sharp of Washington, DC. She is also survived by her sister, Diane M. (Fred) Finkbeiner, of Bishop, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Carrie Sharp, of Fort Mill, S.C.; grandchildren, Garrett C. (Erica) Sutula, Meganne (Zac) Gibson, John T. “Jack” (Maria) Sharp, Allyson Sharp, Kaleigh (Josh Gabrelcik) Sutula, Maggie (Lance) Justus, Timothy E. (Kelly Doyle) Sharp and Katherine “Katie” Russ-Sharp; four great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and their families; and Murph’s children, Maura Murphy Pierce, John V. Murphy, Michael J. Murphy and their families. 

Marlene is predeceased by her husbands, Jack and Murph; her son, John Marsden Sharp; her grandson, Joseph Cotton Sharp; and her sisters-in-law and their husbands, Mary Jane and Robert Page, Jean and Dr. A. Charles “Chuck” Massaro, and Margaret “Peggy” and Carle Ingram.

Floyd Pire

Churchville - Floyd  Monroe  Pire , 80  of Churchville  passed away on Friday, June 9, 2023 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York.

Mr. Pire was born Wednesday, January 13th, 1943 in Rochester, New York a son of the late Frances Pire and Laverne Pire.

Floyd was independent from a young age. Growing up in Rochester he overcame many struggles. In 1981 he married the love of his life, Robin Mallette, and together had two wonderful children. He was an exceptional house painter, working on many of the "Pained Lady" homes in Rochester. Floyd put his heart and soul into his business, as a painter, and worked for over 40 years in the Rochester area. While he enjoyed many of the little things in life, his truest passion was being a loving father and husband.

Surviving are his wife Robin of Churchville; Son Elan (Katherine) Pire of Covington; grandchildren, Bohannon Monroe of Covington, Daxton Mason of Covington, Wesley Cliff and Natalie Cliff, both of Corfu. In death Floyd is reunited with his parents and his daughter, Doncia Cliff.

Lawrence C. Abendschein

Lawrence C. Abendschein, 83 of North Java, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 8 2023 at Charlotte House, surrounded by his family. He was born September 17, 1939 in Lancaster to the late Clifford (Viola) Abendschein. He is preceded in death by three sisters, Betty Haynes, Eleanor Klinkman and Jean Crane. 

Larry was a farmer his entire life and there is nothing he loved more then farming, he worked construction for years but farmed before, after and during. He was a simple man that enjoyed family, friends and being together. 

He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Kathleen (Lung) Abendschein of North Java, children, Darlene Abendschein of North Java, Annette (Kevin) Vickers of North Java, Thomas of Red Hook, Kenneth of Arcade, Michael of Chaffee and Frederick Abendschein of Freedom; 4 grandchildren, Melissa (James) Haenle, Kevin, Ian, Aiden, 3 great-grandchildren, Jacob, Hunter and McKayla, along with many nieces and nephews.

A committal service with military honors for Henry “Hank” Kujawski, Sr., 91, of Batavia who passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on January 7, 2023, will be Friday, June 16th, 11:00am at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Kathryn Westermeier

Kathryn A. Westermeier, 70, of Akron NY entered into rest on May 17, 2023 after a brief battle with lung cancer.  Kathy was a graduate of Alexander Central School & earned her BA & MaEd at SUNY Geneseo. Kathy worked as a librarian at W.G. Rice Elementary in Boiling Springs PA for 34 years. She loved her job, touched countless lives & made life-long friends. Upon her retirement, she returned to NY to be with her beloved family, living next door to her daughter Heidi, son-in-law Paul, & her cherished grandson Leo. She loved exploring other cultures & was a frequent traveler who visited France, England, Poland, Italy, Peru, Costa Rica & Mexico in recent years, among many other destinations with her family. She was an avid reader of non-fiction who enjoyed learning new things, teaching herself Spanish in recent years. She found joy in art, nature, & saw beauty in the smallest of things.


Kathy is survived by her daughter Heidi (Paul) Muck; her grandson Leo; her brother Walter (Kathie) Kershenski; her nephews Kent (Jess) Kershenski & Michael Kershenski; her sister-in-law Jane (Bruce) Kershenski, her sisters-in-law Barbara & Carla Westermeier, & many other nephews, nieces & cousins.


She was pre-deceased by her parents Chester & Jane Kershenski & her brother Bruce Kershenski.
Calling hours will be Friday, June 23 from 4-7pm at the Charles Meyer Funeral Home, 13228 Broadway Alden, NY. A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, June 24 at 10:00 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Darien Center. A separate memorial service will be held in PA at a later date.

Paul Strogen

Paul D. Strogen 81, of Daly City, California and formerly of Batavia, passed away January 29, 2023 at his home.

Mr. Strogen was born May 17, 1941 in Batavia, the son of the late Joseph P. Strogen and Elva Hyde Strogen.

Surviving are his son James Wohlford (Sherri) of Bloomsburg,PA, brother James A. Strogen (Virginia) of Sunrise Beach, MO and sister Mylynne Austgen (Wayne) of Elizabeth,CO.

Mr. Strogen was a graduate of Batavia High School where he played drums in the band and ochestra. He also was a member of the Saint Joseph Drum and Bugle Corps.

Paul served his country honorably in the United States Navy, serving on the USS Dewey and later as an electronics instructor at the Treasure Island facility of the US Navy at San Francisco.He served during the Vietnam years on a special warfare intelligence aircraft.

He was a member of the Batavia VFW as well as in San Francisco.

In later years he worked as an electrical engineer for various firms.

Mr. Strogen travelled extensively all over the world.  He especially loved to sail his own sailboat  with friends.

Special destinations for him were the Hawaiian Islands, Australia , Europe and especially Slovakia where he visited Strogen family relatives.

Mr. Strogen was a patron of the San Francisco Symphony and the San Francisco Opera and participated in folk dance in Europe and Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.  His motto was: "Music feeds my soul-Dance is my lifeblood"

He will be missed by family and a large number of friends all over the world.

Mr. Strogen's Navy Honors Memorial Service we be held at the West Bethany cemetery at 1:00 pm on Saturday June 17th, 2023.

Donna Pringle

Bergen - Donna R. Pringle , 79  of Bergen passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2022, peacefully surrounded by her loving family in Bergen, NY.

Donna was born Friday, March 19th, 1943 in Brockport, New York, daughter of the late Merton Reynolds and Ethel D John. She married Richard A Pringle, in January 1962. Donna graduated from Byron-Bergen Central Schools and later became a licensed hairdresser. She worked for Gilette/Sullivan insurance in Bergen and later as an associate for Wegmans in Brockport, until her retirement. 

She was active in the community as a member of the Bergen United Methodist Church, and the Gillam Grant Community Center. Donna enjoyed painting, gardening, crafting, and spending time with her family and friends. Donna was a wonderful grandmother that loved spoiling and playing with her grandchildren and new great-grandbaby, Ella 

Surviving are her children, Rich (Susan) Pringle and Deb Klieger; grandchildren, Richard (Taty) Klieger, Sarah Klieger, and Samuel Pringle; brothers, Richard Reynolds, Gary (Bernie) Reynolds, and Jim (Robin) Reynolds; sister, Sharon (John) Lohman and many nieces and nephews. 

Donna is predeceased by her husband, Richard A. Pringle; parents, Ethel D John and Merton Reynolds, and special friend, Tom Fischer. 

Friends and family are welcome to an open house celebration of life Saturday, June 17, 2023 from 1 P.M. to 4:00 p.m. at the Rose Garden/Viking Vahala Room in Bergen.

Jean Scoins Chase

Jean Scoins Chase passed away at her home in Oakfield, NY, on Monday, June 5, 2023, at the age of 95.

She was born on September 5, 1927, in Buffalo, NY, grew up in East Pembroke, and graduated from Corfu Central in 1945 as Salutatorian of her class. In 1949, Jean married Richard D. Chase, who predeceased her on May 24, 2003. Jean graduated from Keuka College School of Nursing as a member of the United States Cadet Nurse Corps. She proudly worked as a Registered Nurse at Genesee Memorial Hospital in Batavia, NY, from 1965-1986.

Jean was a member of the Oakfield Historical Society, Oakfield Presbyterian Church, and Genesee County Fish and Game Protective Association “Godfrey’s Pond”. She loved gardening, being a caring nurse and good listener, exploring genealogy through research, traveling, and spending time with family, especially her grandchildren and beyond.

Jean is survived by five children; Jeffrey (Linda) Chase of Churchville, NY, William Chase, Deborah (Matthew) Martin, and Gary Chase of Oakfield, and Nancy (Tom) Kurczewski of Gahanna, OH; grandchildren Christina (Jamon) Freak, Alicia (Steve) Fitzsimmons, Jamie (Michael) Lindsley, Mandy McAvoy, Rebecca (Michael) Martin, Leslie Palmer, Melissa Martin, Aaron (Monica) Chase, Adam (late Nicole) Newsome, Andrew Newsome, and Nicole Chase; great-grandchildren Samantha (Jonathan) Stefaniak, Ivan (Liz Hawes) Pangrazio, Kyley Pascarella, Chase McAvoy, Caden Newsome, Mahlon Jones, Noah Newsome, Milena Lindsley, David Konarkski, Tia Lindsley; great-great grandchild Aleksander Stefaniak; special family members JR & Debbie Newsome and Jeni; sister Naomi Grice; brother Allan (Janice) Scoins; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Charles M. Richards

Charles M. Richards, 75 of Attica, passed away Sunday, June 4, 2023 at Charlotte House in North Java. He was born in Albany, October 5, 1947 to the late Charles and Dulice (Leader) Richards.

Chuck was a proud United States Navy Veteran. He worked as a police officer in Albany, before moving to Wyoming County and working as a Lieutenant at both Attica Correctional Facility and Wyoming County Correctional Facility. Chuck loved reading, gardening and his dog Jack. He made beautiful furniture out of wood, was known to be a history buff and loved to share his knowledge.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Collen F. (Heeney) Richards of Attica, children, Travis (Sarah) Richards of Greenville, NY, Aimee Gales of NC, Tara Cole of Ghent, NY, Bryan (Maria) Cole of Athens, NY, Tricia Cole of Batavia, 13 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, along with several nieces and nephews.

There will be no prior calling hours and services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Christina B. Johnson

Christina B. Johnson, age 63, passed away on Monday, June 5, 2023, after a long battle with cancer. Heaven gained another angel.

Chris was born November 2, 1959, in Batavia, a daughter of Lawrence “Larry” and Arlene (Heier) Bordonaro.

She enjoyed crafting, playing cards, and going out to dinner and the casino with Greg. Chris loved her family and visited them often.

Chris graduated from Batavia High School and later Genesee Community College with a degree in Accounting. She married the love of her life, Gregory Johnson, on October 23, 1982. Chris worked for AAA and recently at Genesee Country Museum.

Chris is survived by her husband, Gregory Johnson of Caledonia; mother, Arlene Bordonaro of Batavia; siblings, Alyce (Mark) Clark and Steen Bordonaro all of Batavia; mother in law, Doris “Fran” Johnson of Avon; sister in law, Kim (Neil) Ayers of Avon; Brother in law Gary Johnson of Avon; several  aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, and cousins.

In death Chris is reunited with her father, Larry Bordonaro; brother, Frank Bordonaro; grandparents, Frank (Dorothy) Bordonaro, and her father in law, Kenneth Johnson.

Family and friends are invited to call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street in Batavia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 12, 2023 at Resurrection Parish- St. Joseph’s Church 303 East Main Street in Batavia. Timothy M. Thornton

Timothy M. Thornton

Timothy Mark Thornton, 71 of Batavia, New York, peacefully passed into eternity after a long illness, on the evening of Sunday, June 4, 2023, surrounded by his family.

Tim was born in Batavia on April 3, 1952 and has been a lifelong resident. He attended Alfred Tech, and returned home to continue working in the family business. He took great pride in Beardsley’s clothing store and being a part of the downtown business community for many years. He continued his career in retail at Land’s End until he retired in 2015.

Tim was an active member in the Batavia Rotary Club, spending his summer nights at Dwyer Stadium, managing the concession stand and thoroughly enjoying the camaraderie of his fellow Rotarians, many of which remained lifelong friends. The years of working stage crew during the Rotary plays made for a lot of laughter and stories that never got old.

He was an avid sports fan of the New York Yankees, Buffalo Bills, and the Buffalo Sabres. He enjoyed traveling to new stadiums and tried to get to as many as possible. If you knew him during the late 80’s, you know all about his prized conversion van. That van was filled full of miles and memories created during family trips to Myrtle Beach, Cape Cod and the guys baseball getaways. 

He is survived by his loving wife and high school sweetheart of 49 years, Margaret (Casey) Thornton, two daughters, Bridget (David) Uberty, Jennifer Houseknecht (Michael Klein, fiance) and son, Kevin (Sarah) Thornton; six beautiful granddaughters, Allison Uberty, Emma-Kate Uberty, Meghan Houseknecht, Ella Grace Houseknecht, Lily Uberty, and Katherine Thornton; brother, Dwight (Tina) Thornton; his proud Aunt Marian Moore, and cousin Kathy (Tom) Norton along with several other close family and friends, all of whom will love and miss him dearly.

Tim is predeceased in death by his parents Eldoune A. Thornton Jr. and Janet A. (Moore) Thornton; in-laws Christopher C. Casey and Mary Louise (Redmond) Casey, son in-law Michael R. Houseknecht, and his pal and Uncle Richard Moore.

Henry Owen Starks

Henry Owen Starks, 71, of Batavia, passed away on May 31, 2023 at United Memorial Medical Center.

Henry was born December 12, 1951, in Dawson, Georgia, a son of the late Buddy and Mary (Dixon) Starks.

Henry will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle who was a very happy person with a contagious smile.  He was a member of Church of God in Christ (39 Lyons Street in Batavia) where he played the tambourine.  Henry worked at Kistner Concrete Products, Akron Rule and Goodwill in Batavia.  He also enjoyed fishing.

Surviving are his wife, Verda Starks of Batavia; children, Corey (Ifrah) Armstrong of Batavia, Donnie Armstrong of Connecticut and Cherkiga Starks of Batavia; grandchildren, Jeremy Armstrong, Dahana Armstrong, Chercal Smith, Osirs Muhammab, Zeshan Armstrong, Rohan Armstrong and Ifran Armstrong all of Batavia, Shaun Davis of Connecticut, Heaven Davis, Armrie Armstrong and Jafree Armstrong all of Batavia; sisters, Hattie Jordan of Orlando, FL, Clara Nixon, Mary Benson and Josephine McKnight, all of Connecticut; brothers, Horace Starks and Willie Starks, both of Connecticut and Robert Wright of Rochester and a host of nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph, Jimmy, Julius and Ross Starks.

Calling hours are Monday, June 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 516 Ellicott Street in Batavia, where Henry's funeral services will be immediately follow at 11:00 a.m., also on Monday.  Henry will be laid to rest in Elmwood Cemetery in Batavia.

Michael David Burns

Michael David Burns, 44 of Attica, passed away on Friday, June 2, 2023.

He was born May 14, 1979, in Phoenix, Arizona, a son of the late Reno Andrew and Lisa Bannister of Attica.

Michael enjoyed listening to music, had a great sense of humor and was a witty individual. He enjoyed spending time with family, especially his two nephews. He was a person that if he walked into a room, he made his presence known. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his mother, Lisa (Christopher) Bannister of Attica. Siblings, Brandon (Samantha) Burns of Dansville, Kaitlyn (Michael) Tiede of Silver Springs, Arin (Patricia) Bannister of North Java and Rosa Andrew of Buffalo. Also survived by his precious nephews, Denton Tiede and Elias Burns.

Francis E. O’Neill “Mike”, 86 of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Friday (June 2, 2023) at the New York State Veterans Home.

He was born November 20, 1936 in Darien, NY, a son of the late Edward J. and Anna Pundt O’Neill.

Mike was a truck driver for General Motors for 44 years until his retirement. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Survivors include a son and a daughter. Sister, Marcella “Marcy” (Anthony) Saraceni. Brother, Edward “Junie” (Sharon) O’Neill. Many nieces and nephews, including his caregivers, John (Beth) O’Neil.

He is predeceased by a daughter Kimberly O’Neill and nine brothers and sisters.

Family and friends are cordially invited to share thoughts, condolences and fond memories on Wednesday (June 7th) from 10am-11am at the J. LEONARD McANDREW FUNERAL HOME, LLC, 2 Bogue Ave., Batavia, where a funeral service will commence at 11am. He will be laid to rest with military honors in St. Joseph Cemetery.

The family would like to thank everyone at the New York State Veterans Home for the outstanding care they provided over the past three years.

He was a proud supporter and patron of the U. S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps for many years.  Memorial contributions may be offered to Rochester CA124 Division USNSCC in care of the Central New York Council Navy League of the United States PO Box 2582 Liverpool, NY 13089.  Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family at www.mcandrewfuneralhomes.net.
