Obituaries

Age 95, of Elba, died peacefully Wednesday afternoon October 19, 2016 at his home while under the care Hospice and his loving family. He was born July 24, 1921 in Batavia, NY a son of the late John and Agnes (Burr) Hoover, also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Georgia (Dewey) Hoover in 2013 and siblings, June Leonard, Jean Swanson and Harvey Hoover. 

Mr. Hoover has been a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Batavia and a 40 year career with NY Telephone known as Verizon today, after retirement he spent 20 years working at Terry Hills Golf Course. He was a former President of the Genesee County Agricultural Society, a 4H Leader, member of the Elba Volunteer Fire Department and the Telephone Pioneers. Bill was always proud to share stories of his semi-pro baseball career that saw him play with the original Batavia Clippers in the PONY League now the Muckdogs, one of his finest moments was catching for Hall of Famer, Bob Feller. Bill was a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather who loved to travel and winter in New Smyrna Beach with his wife.    

Surviving are his children, Susan Hoover of Rochester, Alice (Paul) Reak and Charles "Chuck" Hoover all of Elba; brother, Robert (Leah) Hoover of Attica; sisters, Pat (Dan) Keene of Attica and Joyce Meisner of Batavia; grandchildren, Jennifer (Scott) Rowe, Jessica Carlson, Aimee (Jeff) Rose and Casey Hoover; great-grandchildren, Emily, Andrew, Ella, Noah, Jason, Celia along with several nieces and nephews. 

The Hoover family will be present from 4-8PM on Thursday October 27 at the MICHAEL S. TOMASZEWSKI FUNERAL & CREMATION CHAPEL, LLC, funeral services will be held 11:00AM Friday October 28 at the First Presbyterian Church 300 East Main Street Batavia. Age 74, of Batavia, died peacefully Wednesday afternoon October 19, 2016 at United Memorial Medical Center. He was born July 30, 1942 in Batavia, NY a son of the late George and Caroline (Cooper) Underhill also preceded in death by brothers, Hugh, Theodore, Archie and Charles. 

Mr. Underhill was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Elba, the Elba Grange and a lifelong farmer who with his son, Dan ran Underhill Farms. His roots were farming, his life was farming, to the extent he built the home his family lives in and the barns around the farm. He enjoyed his four legged companions, Dixie & Lexie and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, Buffalo Bills and Syracuse Orange. 

Surviving is his beloved wife of 51 years, Judith (Lasal) Underhill of Batavia, children, Julie (Matthew) Spencer of NC, Daniel (Melissa Giessler) Underhill of Batavia, Deborah (John) Igoe of Oakfield, Kevin (Stephanie) Underhill of Batavia and Jeffrey (Tiffany) Underhill of MT; siblings, Carolyn Smith of Batavia, Ruth (David) Rigerman of Batavia; sisters-in-law, Alice of Attica and Florence of Batavia; grandchildren, George, Jenifer, Andrew, Steven, John Jr., Mayson, Emilyanne, Emma, Avery and Hadley along with many nieces and nephews.

Oakfield - Steven Lyle Mowers, 44, of Oakfield, NY, passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia.

Mr. Mowers was born February 28, 1972 in Batavia, a son of Steven G. Mowers of Alexandria, PA and Karen (Dennis) Matters McComb of Oakfield.

He served in Korea with the US Army from 1990 to 1992.  He was a graduate of Oakfield Alabama High School, was an avid outdoorsman and had worked as a hunting guide out west.

Survivors include his father, Steven G. (Diane) Mower of PA; his mother, Karen (Dennis) Matters McComb of Oakfield; 2 stepchildren,  Alex Norman of Fort Drum and Daniel Norman of Corfu; 4 siblings, Nathan Mowers of Oakfield, Rachel McComb of MA, Matthew (Aunchana) McComb of Oakfield and Jessica (Dylan) Brew of Batavia and a niece, Elinora Weber of MA.

STELLA M. CIRILLO

Age 85, of Batavia, died peacefully Sunday morning October 16, 2016 at Rochester General Hospital. She was born September 15, 1931 in St. Johns Newfoundland, Canada a daughter of the late Robert and Elizabeth (Cook) Earle also preceded in death by her husband, James Cirillo; siblings, William & Jerry Earle and Phyllis Griener. 

Stella was a long time member of Resurrection Parish (St. Joseph's) and worked for many years at the former Moose Club. She loved to travel, visit the casino and go out to dinner with friends and family. 

Surviving are her siblings, Edward (Beverly) Earle of Lockport, Grace Cook of Batavia, Jeanette Konieczny of Batavia, Loretta Bausch of Silver Lake, Betty Minchin of VA, Patrick (Marge) Earle of Rochester and Dave (Barb) Earle of Batavia along with many nieces and nephews.

Thomas graduated from Attica High School. He was a soldier from the 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade. A native of Attica, NY Thomas Seiler was a Patriot Launching Station Enhanced Operator with 1st Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment. Thomas Seiler's awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal with two bronze oak leaf clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with one silver oak leaf cluster, the Korea Defense Service Medal, three Overseas Service Medals, and the Army Service Ribbon."Staff Sgt. Thomas Seiler was a beloved member of the 1-7 ADA team and will be sorely missed," said Lt. Col. Jason Townsend, commander of 1st Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery, in a statement. "Thomas was an exceptional teacher, coach and mentor to our soldiers and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time."

Thomas Seiler is survived by his brothers Raymond Michael of Missouri; Matthew (Diane) of New Hampshire; Mark (Valerie) of Blasdell, NY and sister Margaret Grindstaff of Pennsylvania; along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, families and friends. He is predeceased by a nephew Andrew Grindstaff.

He was an avid golfer, a vocal fan of professional sports, and a retired teacher of 39 years at Auburn High School. Throughout his life and career, he looked to give anyone who made an effort a chance to succeed. Dave always had the time to spend with people, talking about politics, current events, or most especially, sports. He was a fan of the Yankees, the Bills, the Browns, and proud alumnus supporter of every Syracuse University sport. As a true sports fan, he took many week-long trips to eventually visit every major league baseball stadium. He will be missed greatly. 

He is survived by his two daughters and their families; Jodi (David) Howe and their children Henry and Gwendolyn, Jennifer (Scott) Morris and their children Brinley, Devon, and Josh, and his long time companion Roberta Dunn.

GINA MARIE BARONE-MAHER

Age 61, of Oakfield, died peacefully early Monday morning October 17, 2016 at her home while under the care of Hospice and her family. She was born September 6, 1955 in Batavia, NY a daughter of the late Joseph and Anne (Mezzapella) Barone also preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Barone. 

Mrs. Maher was formerly employed at the Buffalo Federal Detention Center in Batavia. A kind, caring woman who's life revolved around her family along with cooking and baking for them. 

Surviving is her beloved husband of 36 years, Martin Maher of Oakfield and her children, Nicholas Maher of Oakfield, Matthew (Anmarie) Maher of Elba and Megan (Jesse) DeNardin of Amherst.

Age 81, of Batavia, NY, died Wednesday October 12, 2016 at United Memorial Medical Center. She was born July 23, 1935 in Warsaw, NY a daughter of the late Lee and Olive (Richardson) Vanvalkenburg. 

Mrs. Angst was a retired telephone operator working for AT&T for many years.

Surviving are her children, Susan (late Jim) Coulter of Batavia, Donna Angst of Rochester, Craig (Sharon) Angst of Arkansas, Debra (Gary) Barnes and Susan Wolter all of Batavia; brother, Michael Strollo of NJ; sisters, Joanne (John) Platman of Maryland, Bev (Jerry) Brady of Batavia along with many grandchildren, great, great - great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Richard Leslie Hyde, 82, of Tavares Florida and Byron and Alexander, New York passed away peacefully in his home of Friday, September 23, 2016 with his wife of 60 years, Joanne, at his side. He was born January 21, 1934 in Batavia, New York to the late Fred and Mildred Chandler Hyde. Richard graduated in 1953 from Batavia High School and Metal Trades Vocational School. He worked for Graham Manufacturing for three years and then started an apprenticeship in 1956 at Doehler Jarvis. On April 21, 1956 he married Joanne Gerould. Rich was drafted into the U.S. Army in December of 1956. He had basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey and continued training on offset press at Fort Belvoir, Virginia and then served in Tokyo for 18 months.

Rich was discharged from the Army in December of 1958 and returned to Doehler Jarvis to finish his apprenticeship and became a Tool and Dye maker. He left Doehler Jarvis in 1969 and went to Eastman Kodak Company as a Master Mold Maker. He retired in January of 1991 to Tavares, Florida. For many years Rich enjoyed hunting in the Adirondacks, fishing on Lake Ontario and vacationing at Cranberry lake. He will be missed by his loving wife Joanne; his two children, Debra (Bob) Spiers of Alexander, New York, and Richard Hyde Jr (Terri Steger) of Batavia, New York; Two grandchildren, Samantha Jo (Keith) Stevenson of Waterloo, New York and Daniel Spiers of Alexander, New York; Two sisters, Joyce (Chuck) Kuehl and Marjorie (William) Reiss; Two brothers, Ralph (Juanita) Hyde and Fred (Sedra) Hyde. Richard’s Memorial Service and Lunch will be held on October 29, 2016 at 11:00AM at Alexander Recreation Fire Hall located at 10708 RT 98, Alexander, NY (Casual Attire). East Bethany - Stephanie Colantonio, 97, of East Bethany, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at her home.

She was born November 23, 1918 in Herne Westfalen, Germany a daughter of the late John and Mary Wozniak.

Her family came to the United States in 1922, settling on the family farm where Stevie spent the next 94 years.

She is predeceased by her husband, John P. Colantonio and her siblings; sister Irene Wozniak, sister Wanda Raymond and her late husband Howard Raymond and brother, Ted Wozniak.

Survivors include her loving sons; David Colantonio and Ron Colantonio; a brother-in-law, Raymond Colantonio; a sister-in-law, Catherine Colantonio and several nieces and nephews including Elaine and Bill Dearcop and Paul and Danis Raymond.

Stevie was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church, East Bethany since its beginning.

She was a generous  fun lady with many interests who praised God for His blessings of a long and faith filled life.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Ann turned 100 on July 30th. She was the sixth of 10 children born to Angelo and Sebastiana Trigilio of Oakfield. She is the mother of Richard Liberante and grandmother of Richard and Dana Liberante of Port St. Lucie, Florida. Ann celebrated her birthday with her siblings John Trigilio and Jennie Paradowski, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mrs. Liberante enjoyed cooking and baking for family parties and loved the freedom of driving her own car and visiting local casinos, was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Church. She participates in all the activities, events and field trips organized by the staff at BHCC. Ann said she is very grateful for her good health, long life, good friends, a loving family and the gentle care she receives at BHCC.

There were no prior calling hours. A Memorial Service was held on October 13, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Mausoleum in Batavia where she will be entombed.

Mr. Burling was born May 5, 1927 in Byron, a son of the late John and Lydia (Schultz) Burling.

Jack served honorably with the Army and was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, where he served as Head Usher.  He was also a board member of West Middlebury Cemetery Association, and a 50 year member of the Free & Accepted Masons, having been elevated to Master Mason.  For many years he owned and operated Burling's Barber Shop in Batavia.

He loved fishing and had a boat called "Clipper-Jack" that he used to take out on Lake Ontario.  Ice fishing was another favorite pastime.  Jack also had a woodworking shop.  He loved to make furniture and restore antiques.  He was very proud to have made a grandfather clock for each of his grandchildren. 

He is the husband of Bertie (Pruitt) Burling of Batavia.  The two were married March 20, 1948 and spent 68 years together.

Surviving along with his wife is his daughter-in-law, Marlene Burling of Batavia, grandchildren, Preston (Tracy) Burling of Harrisburg, PA, Lyle (Sharie) Burling of Scranton, PA, and Christine (Greg) Smalley of Morrisville; a sister, Frances Burling of Batavia; nephews, John (Mary) Butler of Batavia, Jackson Butler of Batavia, and Daniel (Jeanie) Burling of Warsaw; great-nephews, James Burling, Jr., Marc Burling, and Richard Burling; a great-niece, Denise Burling O’Toole. 10 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren also survive.

He is preceded in death by his son, James A. Burling who passed away Dec. 26, 2013, and his brothers, George and James (late Joyce) Burling.
