  Martin C. McDonald, 71, of Attica passed away on May 20, 2022 at his home. He was born on April 12, 1951 in Buffalo to the late Martin G. McDonald and the late Dorothy (Faslon) Stiles. He is preceded in death by a sister; Ginny McDonald; daughter in law Rebecca McDonald and father in law; Albert Stewart.

Martin was a proud United States Marine veteran who devoted his life to working. At a young age he started collision work and eventually opened up his own shop in the buffalo area where he grew up. Marty moved to Darien in his 20s where he spent many years as an EMT at the Darien fire department, he held many positions and eventually became chief. He then went on to be a correctional officer and after dedicating 27 years he retired from Attica State Correctional facility. When Marty was in his late 40s, he moved to Attica where he resided the rest of his life. He liked to do his own handy-man work and in the early 2000s he and his wife remodeled the home and built a 2-car garage. Marty spent his free time with friends and family. He enjoyed going out to eat, vacations, going for a drive to jam out with his daughter Taylor, doing work around the house and being outside, going to different casinos with his wife Barb, but Marty most loved spending time with his “pride and joy” Taylor. Martin was a kind soul with a heart bigger than the world.

He is survived by his wife; Barbara (Stewart) McDonald; beloved children Taylor McDonald, Robin McDonald, Michele (Robert) Wesley, Mike (Jen) McDonald, Marty McDonald, Scott McDonald; sister Mary Louise (McDonald) Miller along with many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and cousins.

LeRoy ~ James F. Christner, age 79, passed on March 21, 2022.

     He was born on April 5, 1942 to the late Paul Christner and Kathryn Gentner Christner. He is survived by his son, Peter; and brothers, Edward and Thomas.

     He was a graduate of Pavilion Central School and Cornell University. Jim was an officer in the U.S. Navy and active in Veterans for Peace. He travelled the world and enjoyed singing with the Cornell Alumni Glee Club.

     His graveside memorial service will be held on June 4th at 11:00 AM at St. Francis Cemetery, Exchange St., LeRoy, with a reception to follow at noon at the Knights of Columbus Hall, West Main St., LeRoy.

Darien Center - Carl  E. Doell, 85, of Darien Center passed away on Tuesday (May 17, 2022) at Buffalo General Hospital in Buffalo, New York.

Mr. Doell was born May 16, 1937 in Ilion, NY, a son of the late Gordon and Hazel (Rouse) Doell.
 
Carl was a classic car enthusiast (especially treasuring his '57 Thunderbird), and a faithful attendee of car shows. Carl had a brilliant sense of humor. He was a hardworking family man, a loving husband, devoted father, beloved grandfather and cherished uncle.

He is the husband of Diane (Helwig) Doell of Darien Center. The two were married on August 22, 1964 in Attica and spent nearly 58 years together.

Surviving along with his wife are his son, Carl E. (Barbara Landers) Doell, II of Attica; a grandson, Nick Doell; brothers, Larry Doell of Ontario, and Richard Doell of Batavia. Carl is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Thomas A. Atkinson, 76, of LeRoy, NY, passed away peacefully on May 20th, 2022 at the Batavia V A Medical Center after a long battle with lung cancer.  He was born November 22, 1945 to Thomas & Martha (Harding) Atkinson. He graduated in 1963 

  from Plains High School. He served in the United States Army and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Sharpshooter (Rifle m-14). He graduated from Kings College with a Degree in Drafting.  He was employed as a sales representative for Mideast Aluminum, as well as a sales representative for the NYS lottery.  He retired in 2006.

     He was married 41 years to his beloved wife, Joanne Wasmanski on May 2, 1966 and moved to LeRoy in 1981. He enjoyed bowling, golf and bingo.

     He is predeceased by his parents, wife (2008) and son, Paul F. Atkinson (2020). He is survived by his sisters, Linda (Richard) White and Bonnie (Bob) Abromavage; daughters Cheryl (Kenneth) Weaver of Crawfordville, FL and Wendy Nelson of LeRoy, NY.  He has 6 grandchildren: Bekki (Greg Houghtaling) Weaver, Kimberly Weaver, Holly (Phil) Barone, Kristin (Christopher) Decker, Paula Atkinson and Thomas Atkinson.  He has 3 great-grandchildren:  Jacob Anthony and Amelia Barone; Allora Decker as well as several nieces. nephews, and cousins.

Batavia - Robert Luke Shell, age 85, of Batavia, passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2022 at Premier Genesee Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Bob was born on January 13, 1937, in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, the only child of Chester Heaks Shell and Ruth Angeline Siefert Shell. As a young boy, he loved roaming the Pennsylvania woods - especially in the company of those who would become his lifelong friends.

A graduate of Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Bob served in the United States Army from 1959-1961 as an MP in Verona, Italy. Following his return from military service, he settled in Batavia, where he devoted himself to his family, his community, and multiple small business that he owned and tirelessly operated through the years.

Bob was known throughout Batavia - not only as the owner of the Hub Restaurant and Midtown Motel, Optimum Realty, and Shell Associates Appraisals, but also as a member of the Rotary Club and St. Paul Lutheran Church, through which he dedicated himself to his faith and his community through service. In addition to the love he showed his family, friends, and community, Bob found joy in so many different things, including his dogs; the Penn State Nittany Lions; Christmas music and decorations; Italy (and speaking bad Italian); working in the garden; listening to jazz; making sauerkraut; taking a drive; playing golf and tennis; going skiing, fishing, and camping with his children; and monitoring the weather (both locally and wherever his children may have been at any given moment). Always excited to talk to people, he thrived on making connections with others - whether they were family, friends, or literally any waiter at any restaurant he ever visited.

Bob spent his life giving to his family and friends, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Lisa Marie Long Shell; his children, Elaine (Robert W. Reyes, Jr.) Shell, Eric Shell, Walter Shell, Jonathan (Lisa) Shell, Susan (Andrew Schulte) Shell, and Ben (Mallory) Shell; and grandchildren, Elizabeth Shell, Erin Shell, Olivia Shell, Zoe Schulte, Clara Schulte, and Callum Shell.

Donald J. Palone, 92, of Oakfield passed away on May 21, 2022. He served in the U.S. Army. He worked many years for GTE Sylvania and Doehler Jarvis. He was a member of St Padre Pio Parish and the American Legion. He enjoyed and loved his family and collecting antique car scale models.
He was predeceased by his Parents Joseph P. Palone Sr.; Gladys (Bordner) Palone; his wife of over 68 years Josephine (Galline) Palone; siblings Jeanette Palone; Geraldine (William) Smith; Joseph (Louise) Palone Jr.; Robert (Suzanne) Palone Sr.; and Son-In- Law, Michael A. McDonald.
He is survived by his daughter, Valerie (Michael) McDonald; Son, Dave (Debbie) Palone; Grandchildren Megan Palone and Shyanne (Ryan Palone) Garrett; Brothers William (Edie) Palone; Richard (Wilda) Palone; and, Sister Patricia (George) Murray, and many Nieces, Nephews, Great Nieces, Great Nephews, and Great Great Nieces and Nephews.

William G. Scoins (Bill) of East Pembroke, died on Friday, May 20, 2022, at home after a lengthy illness.

Bill was born in Buffalo on May 20, 1926, to the late Clayton J. and Frieda Baum Scoins. He is survived by his sisters Jean (Richard) Chase, Naomi (Donald) Grice, brother Alan (Janice) and was preceded in death by his brother Robert (Ella) Scoins. Bill is also survived by his three children; Todd (Mary) of Batavia, Barbara (the late Dennis) Richmond of Arlington, TN and Thomas (Sondra) of East Pembroke. He is also the proud grandfather of Brandon, Gregory, Tyler (Nicole), Philip, Natalie and Benjamin.

He worked in construction for many years eventually going into business for himself. He continued his career at Seamans Hardware then retired from Jay E. Potter Lumber in Corfu. He also loved the challenges that cabinet making afforded him.

Bill was a Navy Veteran of World War II, Electricians Mate 2nd serving on Guam, and a former Commander and lifetime member of the Corfu VFW Post 8642. He was a Batavia Bowling Association Director and Hall of Fame member and helped to create several area bowling leagues. He was in the Corfu Area Business Association and lifetime member of the Independent (later International) Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF). He served as the Secretary-Treasurer for the Corfu Fire District and a member of the Holland Purchase Society.He was also a member and chairman of the Pembroke Planning Board, a Pembroke Town Councilman and Town Supervisor. He and his family were hosts to several foreign exchange students through the American Field Service (AFS). Bill’s greatest pleasure came from over 80 years of membership to the Boy Scouts of America. As a member of the Boy Scouts, he served as a Troop Leader, Executive Board Member and a staff member at his second home, Camp Sam Wood. He was awarded the Silver Beaver, the highest local award, for his commitment to Scouting. Bill was an avid naturalist and especially enjoyed watching and identifying birds.

A memorial gathering will be held soon at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made to The Pembroke Historical Society.

Jack Edward Housenger, longtime resident of Batavia, passed away Friday, May 20th at the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Center in Bolivia, NC, after a brief illness.  He was 92.

He was born April 18, 1930 in Batavia and lived there for most of his life with his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, the late Verna Mae (Smith) Housenger, who passed away from M.S. in 2009 following many years of Jack’s faithful care.   

He is survived by his devoted children, daughter Vicki (John) Morrison, and son Jack (Jody) Housenger, both of Southport, NC.  He also leaves behind three grandsons, Matthew Morrison of Russellville, KY, Justin (Theresa) Housenger of Centreville, VA, and Alex (Chloe) Housenger of Milton, VT, as well as two great-grandchildren, Sarah and Joseph Housenger, who all adored their Gramps and Great-gramps.  He is predeceased by his brother, Robert E. Housenger, who resided in Ocala, Florida until his death in 2019.  

Jack served as the manager of the City of Batavia Water Department until his retirement.  He loved to hunt and fish, and his greatest joys were sitting in a boat on Canada’s Rideau Lake trolling for walleye, or outsmarting a wild turkey in a hunt.  In recent years, he relocated to North Carolina to be closer to his children.

Friends are invited to pay their respects at the H. E. Turner Funeral Home in Batavia on Thursday, May 26th.  Viewing hours are from 2:00-4:00 p.m., with a brief memorial service at 4:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests contributions to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (nationalmssociety.org) in his memory.

Lars B. Walker, 64, passed away suddenly, Saturday, May 7, 2022.

Lars was born on June 10, 1957, in Batavia, NY to the late Edward and Janice (Huth) Walker. He was the brother of the late Loren, Kim and Kathleen Walker. 

Lars is survived by his loving companion, Bonnie Swimline; his children, Courtney (Kevin Feran) Walker and Brett (Randee) Walker; granddaughter, Llewyn S. Walker; sisters, Cheryl Walker and Connie (Peter) Balon. Lars is also survived by several nieces, one nephew, great nieces, nephew and cousins.

Lars worked at Heil Industries for many years. He was a retired welder. Lars enjoyed fishing and gardening.

  James Russell Hardie, 79, of Bennington passed away peacefully on Friday May 20, 2022 at the Gateway Home in Attica with his loving wife by his side. He was born on November 24, 1942 in Warsaw to the late Elmer and Elizabeth (Beaver) Hardie. 

Jim grew up on the family farm in Dutch Flats, Varysburg, graduated from Notre Dame High School in Batavia, NY in 1960 and received a business degree from Alfred State in 1962.  He served in the U.S. Army in signals intelligence from 1962-1964. He built an insurance agency business, Austin Hardie Wise Agency, in Attica, serving as President.  The agency then became part of Tompkins Insurance Agencies in which he worked until his retirement. Jim loved spending time with his wife Betty, his children and grandchildren and his brothers and sisters.  A lifelong resident of Wyoming County, Jim was passionate about serving his community. One of his favorite events of the year was attending and supporting the annual Wyoming County Fair 4-H auction. During his lifetime he served his community through many organizations including the Wyoming County IDA, the Wyoming County Hospital Foundation, the Attica Lions Club, and the United Way of Wyoming County. 

He is survived by his loving wife Betty (Eybers) Hardie; children Mary Beth (Rick) Crago, Sharon Hardie, Michael (Nancy) Hardie, and Megan O'Hagan; Grandchildren, Abbey Crago, Jordan, Haley and Maya Hardie, Carys, Camryn, and Sean O'Hagan; His siblings Robert (Janet) Hardie, Sue (Don) Townsend, Judy Hardie, Donna (Andy) Fay, Nick (Kathy) Hardie, Betsy (Chris) Van Son and Bill (Mary Beth) Hardie.

Batavia – Sally I. Harloff entered eternal Life on Wednesday (May 18, 2022) at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Avon, Ohio. Her saving faith in Jesus began in her childhood home on Franklin Street and the United Methodist Church in Batavia.

Sally was born September 30, 1946 in Batavia, daughter of the late Morse and Nancy (Roebuck) Stringham. She inherited the Roebuck family love from her loving mother Nancy and passed this love to her children. Sally played field hockey in high school and excelled in art. She graduated from Batavia High School in 1965. Sally loved horses, swimming, and flowers. She led and mentored many young girls in Camp Fire and Girl Scouts in Texas, Pennsylvania, and Ohio; and was honored as Mrs. Scouting for several years in North Olmsted, Ohio.

Sally married December 25, 1965 and lived in Austin, Texas, Seattle, Washington, West Palm Beach and Gainesville, Florida, Irving, Texas, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and North Olmsted, Ohio while her husband prepared for and worked in defense and energy fields and NASA. She was president of Harloff Capital Management in North Olmsted, Ohio for 28 years.

We will always remember Sally for her endless compassion, unwavering fierce love and support of her family, beautiful caring nurturing spirit, always able to adjust and adapt, and stay on the positive side in everything. She will be in our hearts forever and will be deeply missed.

Sally is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 56 years, Dr. Gary J. Harloff, PhD; four loving daughters, June Ann (Will), Eve (Rob), Susan (Matt), and Nancy; and four beloved grandchildren, Alexandra (Aaron), Jessica, Victoria, and Grant.

She is also survived by brothers, Roy (Diane) and Richard (Barbara); sisters-in-law, Nancy and Shari; half-sister, Ann; and predeceased by her sister Lamar (Ken); and brothers, Ray and Alan.

Veronica C. Rapp, 98, of Hilton, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2022 at Unity Hospital.

Veronica was born August 2, 1923 in Rochester, a daughter of the late Edward and Irene (Streb) Herbst.

Veronica loved spending time with her family and friends, especially playing Scrabble with them.  She enjoyed coffee along with sewing, ceramics and Facebook, where she had many friends and family.  Veronica owned and operated the former Batavia Motel.

Surviving are her children, Lawrence (Charles Harrington) Letter of Atlanta, GA, Richard (late Bonnie) Letter of Mechanicsville, VA, Kathi (Donald) Conklin of Rochester, NY, Steven (Carol) Letter of Kent, WA and David (Dawn Dunlavey) Letter of Mechanicsville, VA; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by husbands, Robert Letter and George Rapp; son, Robert Letter, Jr.; brothers, Elmer Herbst and William Herbst and sisters, Marion Schulwitz, Irene Young and Dorothy Schaubert.

Stafford ~ Pamela J. Kingsley, age 75, of Main Road, passed away Sunday evening (May 15, 2022) at the LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home.

   

  She was born April 30, 1947 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Charles and Jean Pope Diefendorf.

     Pam is survived by her sister, Trudy (Jack) Miller of Attica and her nephews, Tyler Miller and Bill Trybushyn.

     In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Reed C. Kingsley and a special cousin, Dave Diefendorf.

     Services and burial in Stafford Rural Cemetery will be private.

William Patrick O’Donnell, 90 of Akron, passed away peacefully on Wednesday (May 18, 2022) at his residence under the loving care of his family, Peggy and Hospice Buffalo.

He was born April 6, 1932 in Buffalo, NY, a son of the late Nora O’Donnell.

Bill served his country with the U.S. Navy from 1952-1956 during the Korean War. He continued his service as a reservist until 1988. He was employed by Erie County Medical Center as a Chief Clinical Perfusionist prior to his retirement. He was a member of St. Teresa’s Church where he participated as an usher and alter server. Bill and his wife Nancy were also active in the Akron Newstead Senior Center. Most of all, he enjoyed his family and will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his daughters, Maureen (Carl) Metzger, Kathleen (Robert Cahill) O’Donnell and Nancy O’Donnell. Son, Daniel O’Donnell. Loving grandchildren, Christopher, Shauna, Elyse, Matthew, Daniel and Brianna. Also survived by seven great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was the husband of the late Nancy Harsch O’Donnell who died May 10, 2022 and father of the late Clatus O’Donnell.

Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial Saturday (May 21st), 10:00am at St. Teresa of Avila R.C. Church, 5771 Buell St., Akron. He will be laid to rest with his loving wife in St. Teresa’s Cemetery.

Nancy L. O’Donnell, 88 of Akron, passed away peacefully on Tuesday (May 10, 2022) at her residence under the loving care of her family and Hospice Buffalo.

She was born February 25, 1934 in Buffalo, NY, a daughter of the late Arthur and Violet Landry Harsch.

Nancy was employed as a secretary for the research foundation of the New York State University at Buffalo prior to her retirement. She was a member of St. Teresa’s Church where she participated in the church choir. She enjoyed camping and riding horses, continuing to ride well into her 70’s. Other hobbies included knitting and crocheting. She was loved dearly and will be missed by many.

She is survived by her daughters, Maureen (Carl) Metzger, Kathleen (Robert Cahill) O’Donnell and Nancy O’Donnell. Son, Daniel O’Donnell. Loving grandchildren, Christopher, Shauna, Elyse, Matthew, Daniel and Brianna. Also survived by seven great-grandchildren and a sister Dorothy Walter.

She was the wife of the late William P. O'Donnell who passed away May 18, 2022 and mother of the late Clatus O’Donnell.

Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial Saturday (May 21st), 10:00am at St. Teresa of Avila R.C. Church, 5771 Buell St., Akron. She will be laid to rest with her loving husband in St. Teresa’s Cemetery.
