Carol A. McClurg, age 81, formerly of Perry and Ogden, NY passed away on Sunday September 29, 2019 at Unity Living Center in Rochester where she had been residing. Carol was born in Dedham, Mass on April 5, 1938 a daughter to the late Walter and Mary Ann (Haskell) MacRae.
Carol was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed sewing, yearly vacation trips to the Cape Cod and spending time with family and friends.

She was the office manager for J.N. White designs in Perry prior to her retirement.

She is survived by a daughter; Lisa (Joseph) Ferraro of Spenceport; son Shawn (Lori) McClurg of Elba; 3 siblings Norma (Mike) Comoletti Sandy (Adrian) Zaccaria and Walter (Virginia) MacRae all of Boston, Massbrother-in-law: John Frucci of Boston, Mass.; 3 grandchildren Aiden McClurg, Kayla (Anthony Dellanno) Butler and Audrey Butler; step-grandchildren Joey Ferraro and Krysta (Derrick) Cunningham, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

JAMES F. MARCINIAK – Of Corfu, Age 72, died unexpectedly Monday September 30, 2019 at his home. He was born December 14, 1946 in Batavia, NY to the late Ignatius and Eleanor (Szczepanski) Marciniak.

Mr. Marciniak served his country honorably during the Vietnam War with the US Marines, he was an aviation mechanic, sharpshooter and a member of the Veness-Strollo Post #1602 of the VFW, Harder-O’donnell American Legion Post #0734 in Attica. He was employed at the former Buffalo China and Tonawanda Coke prior to retirement, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid bowler rolling numerous 300 games. He was a Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres fan along with the former Brooklyn Dodgers. Jim enjoyed gardening, shopping but most of all his time spent with his “little sweetheart,” Juliana.

He is survived by his sons Jamie Marciniak of Batavia and Jonathan (Kimberlee) Marciniak of Attica; cherished granddaughter, Juliana Marciniak; former wife, Mary Grace “Mitzi” Marciniak of Batavia; brother, David (Anita) Marciniak of SC along with several cousins.

DONALD F. STARKWEATHER ~ Age 87, of Batavia, died Monday September 30, 2019 at United Memorial Medical Center. Don was born May 8, 1932 in Batavia, NY to the late Fay and Florence (Branton) Starkweather also preceded in death by his brothers, Edward (Pep), Paul and Duane.

Don owned and operated Starkweathers Egg Farm for many years and in his retirement delivered auto parts for NAPA. He had a love for sports, especially basketball along with attending his grandchildren’s sports events and Batavia Downs to watch harness horse racing.

Surviving are his beloved children, James (Kathleen) Starkweather of Batavia, John (Stefanie) Starkweather of E. Bethany, Kathy (Mark George) Russell of Stafford and Sharon (James) Laskett of Batavia; cherished grandchildren, Kelly Mallaber, Adam Starkweather, Angela (Matthew) Sage, Stacey Lane, Shannon Russell, Jillian (Peter) Mittiga, TJ Henderson, Justice Fagan, Jorden & Tyler Prescott; great-grandchildren, Lennox, Ava and Caden; sister-in-law, Roz Starkweather of Albion; aunt, Alice Dix of Batavia along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

BATAVIA - Wilford "Bill" L. Oakes, 83, of Batavia, passed away Monday, (September 30, 2019), at Premier Genesee Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Batavia.

Wilford was born February 29, 1936, in S. Alabama, the son of the late Clifford and Dorothy (Lawton) Oakes.

Bill was a member of the former Oakfield 1st Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder, Sunday School Superintendent, and Trustee.  He served his country honorably with the United States Air Force and was the Village of Oakfield Superintendent for many years.  Bill was also a truck driver with the former Paille Express of Oakfield.  He enjoyed antique cars, flea markets, boating on Seneca Lake, and golfing. 

He is the husband of Gretchen (Cope) Oakes of Batavia.  The two were married on December 28, 1954 and enjoyed nearly 65 years together. 

Surviving along with his wife are his daughters, Kathy (Rev. Clark) Sawyer of Butler, PA, Sandra Giraulo of LeRoy, Bonnie (Anthony) Lipari of Fairport, and Janet (Jeffrey) Bates of Oakfield; Grandchildren, Matthew Mueller, Brian (Elisha) Mueller, Emily (Michael) Lyons, Jordan Port, Stephanie (Steven) Haber, Andrew Lipari, Kristin (Richard) Long, Jonathan Bates, and Jacob Bates; Great-Grandchildren, Evan, Arthur, Grier, Peden, Fitz, Brodie, Olivia, Mickey, and Wyatt.

He is predeceased by his sister, Doris Oakes.

There will be no visitation.  A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.  Burial will be in Sampson Veterans Cemetery, in Romulus. Walter S. Zon, 94 of Corfu, passed away peacefully, Monday, September 30, 2019 at Premier Genesee Center, Batavia.

Walter is predeceased by his beloved wife Mary (Nowak) Zon.

He was a long time member of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Corfu and served in the Army Corp. of Engineers during World War II. Walter is survived by many nieces and nephews and a large church family.

Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, October 3, 2019 at 11 a.m. at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, 18 West Main Street, Corfu. Arrangements were made by C. B. Beach & Son Mortuary, Inc., Corfu, NY.

 

Julia M. Dzierzanowski, 86 of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Saturday (September 28, 2019) at Hildebrandt Hospice Care in Rochester.

She was born May 18, 1933, in Warsaw, NY, a daughter of the late Joseph and Marian Hottois Goodie.

Julia was formerly employed by Star Market and United Memorial Hospital in Batavia prior to her retirement. She was a member of Resurrection Parish. Julia enjoyed ceramics, yodeling, working outdoors and cooking. Most of all she enjoyed her family and will be dearly missed by those who knew her.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard “Benny” Dzierzanowski in 2001; son, Rex Dzierzanowski in 1980; brothers, Joseph, John and Leo Goodie; sisters, Myrtie Neider, Estella Mae Byers and Mary Ellen Campbell.

Survivors include her daughters, Dawn Sachs of Rochester and Deborah (Ronald) Foster of Batavia. Son, James (Paula) Dzierzanowski of Oklahoma. Brother, Elmo Goodie of Poland, NY. Sister, Esther Carmel of Pavilion. Also survived by 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

GARY WRIGHT HILBURGER

Rochester ~ September 27, 2019, suddenly at the age of 73, following his long battle with Parkinson’s Disease while at the NYS Veterans Home @ Batavia. Gary is predeceased by his parents, Lenard (Clara) Hilburger, In-laws, Richard (Phyllis) Chaffee, brother-in-law, Rick Chaffee. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Linda, beloved children, Rachael Hilburger, Eric (Lilly VanReenen) Hilburger, Nathan (Erica) Hilburger, Rebecca (Damon) Heckle, cherished grandchildren, Ellie & Luke Heckle, Avery & Michael Hilburger, sister, Janice Hilburger, 2 sisters-in-law, 4 brothers-in-law along with many nieces and nephews.

After serving in the U.S. Navy, Gary received a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Buffalo. He worked as a Senior Service Engineer and Technical Writer at the Eastman Kodak Co. & Polychrome Graphics for over 32 years. He valued education, poetry, music and a good slice of key lime pie (or any sweet for that matter). Gary was an avid Bills fan. Gary was always ready with a dad joke, earning him the name of “Big Pun.” He enjoyed a good hug on a rug, and on fall Sundays, throwing pillows at the tv, and awkwardly talking in funny voices. He always taught us to do the right thing and be a “Man (Woman) of your word.” He traveled the world during his time spent in the Navy. However, his proudest moments were spent with his family. Now, “Go knock your socks off!”

JOHN J. STUCKO, JR. ~ Age 89, of Elba, died peacefully Saturday September 28, 2019 at Strong Memorial Hospital. He was born in Albion, NY on January 24, 1930, a son of the late John J. and Florence (Zwiefka) Stucko, Sr. also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sophia (Jacek) Stucko in 2017.

Mr. Stucko served his country honorably during the Korean Conflict aboard the USS Wisconsin which not long ago his grandson was re-enlisted on. He worked for many years at GTE Sylvania prior to its closing and retired from Genesee Community College. He was a longtime member of St. Padre Pio Parish in Elba, member of the VFW and former member of the Elba Volunteer Fire Dept. John loved to fish, hunt and be outdoors, especially the Adirondack Mountains namely “The Flow.” He was an amazing woodworker and carver, he prospected for “gold” with his son-in-law in Alaska and was a fantastic cook and baker. Many in the area will attest to his delicious homemade Rye Bread that he would drop off on his, “Bread Route.”

He is survived by his beloved children, Marty (Amy) Stucko of Elba; Jim Stucko of Oakfield and Zoe (Dell) Jeffery of Newcomb, NY; cherished grandchildren, Meg and Collin Stucko, Nick (Megan) Stucko, John (Hannah) Stucko, Nathan (Jess) Jeffery, Jess (Eric) Ackerson; great-grandson, Wyatt Jeffery; sisters, Mary Allen of Rochester and Marcia (Phil) Ciarico of Albion.

John A. Rauth, 79, of Varysburg, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2019 at U.M.M.C. after a courageous battle with C.M.L.. He was born in N. Tonawanda on June 28, 1940 to the late Karl and the late Margaret (Schultz) Rauth. John was preceded in death by his brothers, Karl and Paul.

John made his home in Varysburg, NY. He was a Journeyman for General Motors. He will be remembered for his many smiles. John enjoyed socializing and telling stories of his days in the Air Force.

John is survived by his loving wife, Bernice (Mitrowski), their children, Heidi K. Rauth and Jonathan S. Rauth; nephews, Rick and Chris Rauth, Evan and Adrian Bylewski; niece, Jennifer Rauth Piper; adopted granddaughters, Jordan Renee and Kendall Maylie Cizdziel.  John’s family would like to thank their dear friends, Judy, Bill, Betty, Patty, April, Pat, Paul, and friends at Crossroads in Batavia.

   David M. Unger passed away Thursday, September 26, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. David was preceded in death by his father, WWII Veteran and Flying Tiger, Marcus Unger and by his mother, Elizabeth Powderly. 

David is survived by his devoted wife, Maggie Unger, their poodle Pearl and his Kitten, his loving children Shannon Unger and granddog Rocco, Marc Unger, daughter-in-law Erika Unger and grandson Ryker Unger, Amy Sosa, son-in-law Nicolas Sosa, grandchildren Carolina, Enzo and Benicio “Beni” Sosa, Andrew Murrer, daughter-in-law Mackenzie Murrer and his youngest, Elizabeth Murrer. Also surviving David is his stepmother Shirley Unger, sisters Beth Stevens and Debbie Ruflin, brothers James Messecar and Ray Messecar. 

While David’s professional accomplishments are vast, including earning an Associates Degree in Nursing from Genesee Community College, retiring as Lieutenant Colonel from the US Army, attached to the 817th Evacuation Hospital after 15 years of service, and 30 years of dedicated service to the NYS Department of Corrections, his true passion and one of the many legacies that he leaves behind is that of the quintessential American outdoorsman. 

Born in Waterloo, NY on July 30, 1953, David grew up on his parent’s farm, until about the age of 7, when his family moved to the East Pembroke area. It’s there that David’s true love of the outdoors was nurtured and where he learned the hunting and fishing skills that he would pass on to not only his children, but to his wife Maggie, a city girl that he quickly “countrified.” David’s love for outdoor sportsmanship took him on travels all across North America, from the shores of Alaska, through the beautiful states of Montana, Wyoming and Colorado, to the stunning beaches of Hawaii, around the lakes of Northern Ontario and to the serenity of the Florida Keys. These were his favorite times, doing what he loved with the people that he loved.

Kenmore/Batavia - Mary Ellen Monachino, 92, of Kenmore and formerly of Batavia, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2019, at Kenmore Mercy Hospital.

Mary Ellen was born June 24, 1927, in Green Bay, WI, a daughter of the late William and Sophia (Haugen) McDonough.

Mary Ellen was a member of Resurrection Parish and a registered nurse at the former St. Jerome Hospital in Batavia.  She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Dennis Monachino of Beaver Island, MI, Cynthia Monachino of Kenmore, Julie Monachino of Kenmore, Patrick (Ann Marie) Monachino of Aldan, PA and Thomas (Daun) Monachino of Batavia; grandchildren, Crystal Fletcher, Mary Regina (Colson) Howard, Christopher (Ashley) Monachino,  Megan Monachino, Maria Monachino, Brian Monachino and Matthew Monachino; great-grandchildren, Brayden Howard and Mason Howard; a brother E. Anthony (Mardee) McDonough of Sydney, Australia; a sister, Charlotte (Richard) Sanderson of Ocala, FL and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Ellen is the wife of the late Patsy Monachino.

Virginia “Ginnie” Brewster, 69, of Batavia, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2019 at home surrounded by her loved ones.  She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Providence Di Fazio.

Virginia began her teaching career at St. Joseph’s School and then moved on to Oakfield Alabama Central School District where she taught for 32 years.  She also worked for B.O.C.E.S. for ten years as an enrichment teacher for Summer Institute.  After her retirement, Ginnie continued to substitute for thirteen years.  She loved interacting with children and looked forward to being among her colleagues.  In addition to teaching, Ginnie worked as a temporary group leader for a technology company in CT for a short period of time.

Ginnie is survived by her devoted husband of 47 years, John, two loving daughters, Karie (Steve) Kilner of Chili, Lorie (Albert) Perez of Chili and four cherished grandchildren:  Ryan and Alyssa Kilner and Gabriella and Ava Perez.  Also surviving are her sisters, Rosemarie (late Jerry) Acheson of Davenport, FL, Annette (Vincent) Gullo of Davenport FL, and Gloria (Steve) Enes of Rochester.  She was a sister- in-law to Jerome (LeAnn) Brewster of Attica, James (Deborah) Brewster of FL, and Janine (Paul) Cain of Pavilion.  Ginnie had thirteen nieces and nephews and eighteen great nieces and nephews.

Ginnie spent her lifetime committed to her family and friends.  Ginnie loved to travel with them, especially to warm places.  She also enjoyed baking cookies and pies for her family.  She was a volunteer for the bereavement committee and was a devout parishioner of Resurrection Parish.  She also served for a short time for All Babies Cherished. During the month of November, she devoted her time and energy in raising funds for Pancreatic Cancer Association of WNY.  With the help of her family and friends, over a period of ten years, she raised thousands of dollars.  Ginnie would often contact others who had cancer to offer positive support.

Batavia - Carl Meleca, age 91, of Batavia, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2019, at the New York State Veteran's Home.

Mr. Meleca was born June 7, 1928, in Calabria, Italy, a son of the late Joseph and late Maria Cristina Baggetta Meleca.

A longtime barber in Batavia, Mr. Meleca was a member of St. Joseph's Church and proudly served his country with the United States Army.

He is survived by his daughters; Karen (Rick) Fredrickson of Melbourne, Florida and Christina (Ben) Gammack of Attica; his grandchildren; Dominic and Isabella Lamitina; two brothers; S. Anthony (Terry) Meleca and C. Benjamin (Jeanne) Meleca, both of Columbus, Ohio his sister; Olga Meleca of LeRoy and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He is predeceased by his brother; Frank Meleca and his sisters; Frances Martino and Josephine Meleca.

  Michelle G. Buckenmeyer, 33, of Alexander passed away on September 28, 2019. She was born on July 3, 1986 in Batavia to Bernard Buckenmeyer Jr. and Marcia (Brown) Hirsch. Michelle is predeceased by her grandfather; Harold Brown.

Michelle graduated from Alexander High School in 2004. She was a lifelong dairy farmer, working on her family’s dairy farm in Alexander. She was an avid Red Sox fan, had a love for the outdoors and riding four wheelers. Michelle was full of life and always had a smile on her face. She had a way with animals, her dogs and cats, but especially the cows and calves she would always help if she could, no matter the time of day or how long it took.

Shell Bell will be irreplaceable at the farm and in our hearts and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her mother; Marcia (Paul) Hirsch of Alexander; father Bernie Buckenmeyer of Alexander; her loving daughter Madison Eddy; boyfriend Nate Beglinger of Alexander; siblings Todd (Matt Norman) Buckenmeyer of Alexander, Cory (Alisha) Buckenmeyer of Alexander, Sara Buckenmeyer of CO., Darin (CJ Schmidt) Buckenmeyer of CO., Adam (Abbie Kelley) of Alexander and Aaron (Leslie) Hirsch of Alexander; grandparents Bernie (Gerrie) Buckenmeyer, Clara (Donald) Kennedy, Marcia Brown; tons of aunts, uncles and cousins; her two favorite nieces and best farm helpers, Lilia Buckenmeyer and Peyson Foster and her nephew Henry Hirsch.

An 11:00AM Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday October 2^nd at the Fire Hall. Michelle will be laid to rest in the West Bethany Cemetery.

  Otis L. Thomas Jr., 57, of Maryland, formerly of Batavia, passed away on Saturday September 21, 2019 in Silver Spring, MD. He was born in Batavia on November 1, 1961 to the late Otis L. Thomas Sr. and Ruth (Hatcher) Stinson of Gates Chili. In addition to his father, Otis is predeceased his brother; Titus Stinson.

Otis will be remembered for his love for all who knew him, as he spread it abroad. Everyone could feel his love and his infectious smile could light up the room.  He was a loyal and caring man who enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his mother, Otis is survived by his wife; Brandy (Mordue) Thomas of MD.; children Otis (Nicole) Thomas III of Batavia, Victor (Kristyn) Thomas of Batavia, Dionna Thomas of Batavia and Nicholas Scott of MD.; siblings Ocie (Al) Swilley of FL., Tyrone (Mary) Stinson of Buffalo, Kevin Thomas of Rochester, Charlotte Thomas of Gates, Tamar Stinson of Buffalo, Onita Thomas of Gates-Chili, Dexter Stinson of Rochester, Rosa (Abrham) Cotton of Rochester, Regina Stinson of Rochester and Michael Stinson of Peekskill; 8 grandchildren along with a host of  Godchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
