Obituaries

John Driscoll passed away peacefully surrounded by family early Wednesday morning, January 18^th at his home in LeRoy, New York.  He was born on January 20^th, 1963 to Catherine (McGuire) and James Driscoll.

     Born and raised in LeRoy, NY, John graduated from LeRoy High School in 1981.  He furthered his education by earning degrees at GCC, SUNY Brockport, and Roberts Wesleyan.  At Roberts Wesleyan, John received his Masters Degree in Education, a degree which gave him the opportunity to work in his dream career as an elementary school teacher.

     John wore many hats in and around his community.  He was a grade school teacher, a RCCFO football referee, and a raft guide at Letchworth State Park.  He enjoyed cycling around the community and hiking and cross-country skiing at local parks.

   

  With each hat he wore, he always brought the same characteristics; perseverance, positivity, courage and humor.  These characteristics aided him in excelling in each hobby he participated in and helped him make a lasting impression on everyone he met.  In his 32 years as a high school football referee, he earned referee of the year along with a lifetime membership.  In his 15 years of teaching at Wolcott Street School, John’s spirit and hard work earned him a “Golden Apple” award in 2019.

     John could always be spotted in rain, wind, and heat riding his bike around the community and back country roads.  His love for riding his bike was sparked when his two friends, Tim Mowry and Doug Legg, road their bicycles form Seattle down the PCH to Nevada finishing up in Colorado.  During the trip, John fell in love with endurance sports.  He ran the NYC marathon, participated in biathlons, and for 17 years participated in Auburn New York’s Great Race with his team the “Common Gray Suckers” (Tom Borrelli, Tom Tillson and Doug Briggs). 

     When John was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer on April 29^th, his faith never wavered, it got stronger.  Before he got sick, he could be seen each weekend at mass and each morning could be found on his spin bike praying.  When he was too sick to attend church, he would participate in Mass on TV and would do his daily prayers on his Bills blanket at home and in hospital beds.

     John touched each and every person he came in contact with through his warm and kind spirit.  He will be missed by his many 4^th and 6^th grade students, his co-workers at Wolcott Street School, his referee friends, his rafting friends, and close friends and family in and around the LeRoy community.  As a testament to his character, the 2023 LeRoy Little League season has been dedicated in his honor.

     He fought his battle the only way he knew how - with courage, positivity and a smile.  He is survived by his best friend and wife of 32 years, Kerry; his daughter, Alanna; his son, Ryan; his mother, Catherine; his brother, Jimmy (Judy); several in laws; his nieces and nephews; uncle; aunt and cousins.  He was predeceased by his father, James and his sister, Patty.

     John’s family will be present to receive friends on Tuesday, January 24^th from 2 ~ 7 P.M. at the Falcone Family Funeral & Cremation Service Inc., 8700 Lake St. Rd. (Rt. 19), LeRoy.  His Rite of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 25^th at 11:00 A.M. at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, St. Peter’s Church, 44 Lake Street, LeRoy.

Euleta (Tooley) Lapp of Batavia, died on January 18, 2023 at Premier Genesee Nursing Home in Batavia, NY. She was born March 7, 1925 in Varysbug to the late Arthur and Ida Lapp Tooley. She is predeceased by her loving husband Earl H. Lapp, grandson Brian Lapp and siblings Norman Tooley, Robert Tooley, Arthur Tooley, Arlene Sattler Mason, Hilda Hammond, Carolyn Tooley, Reta Tooley, and Roberta Malroy.

She is survived by her children, Keith (Mary Ellen) Lapp of Key West, Gerald (Linda) Lapp of York, Dennis (Nancy) Lapp of Batavia, Darryl (Karen) Lapp of Shelbyville, Kentucky, Nadine Lapp (friend, Donald Pickell) of Batavia, along with many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no prior calling hours. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. She will be laid to rest in Darien Cemetery.

Michael James Wright "Pebbles", age 57 of Stafford NY, passed away January 14, 2023.

     Michael was born on November 22, 1965 to Donald E. Wright Sr. and Mary Ellen Crowley Wright of LeRoy, NY.

     He is predeceased by his father, Donald E. Wright Sr.  Michael is survived by his spouse, Helaine P. Wright; his son, Conner Jay Wright and daughter, Kylea Jean Wright; his mother, Mary Ellen Wright; brothers Donald “Rock” (Nancy) Wright Sr. of LeRoy and Daniel Wright of Rochester; his sisters, Ann Legzdin of Rochester, Kathy Wright of Rochester, Nancy Wright of Rochester and Mary Kay Wright of New York City, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.

     Michael’s greatest accomplishments are his two children. They were his pride and joy.  His favorite thing in life was watching them in their various activities and performances.

     Michael was employed with Oatka Milk Products for close to 30 years.

  Dorothea M. “Dottie” Bennett, age 52, of Batavia formerly of Perry, NY passed away on Monday January 9, 2023 at her home. She was born in Warsaw, NY on October 4, 1970 a daughter to Edward G. Bennett Sr. and the late Betty Lou (Ellis) Bennett.

Dottie was a 1988 graduate of Perry High School. She enjoyed walks in area parks with her dog, collecting heart shaped rocks, visits with her nieces and nephews and was an excellent caregiver for her parents.

She is survived by her 3 brothers: Edward (Cindy) Bennett Jr. of Gainesville, Robert Bennett of Castile and Thomas Bennett of Batavia along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Along with her mother she is preceded in death by a sister: Teresa O’Brien and nephew: Timothy O’Brien.

Catherine Eileen (Parmelee) Pullyblank began her eternal journey on January 14, 2023 with her loving family by her side.

     Survived by her husband of 56 years, David L. Pullyblank; her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda (Ace) Ball of North Chili; her son and daughter-in-law, David (Beth) Pullyblank of LeRoy; her beloved grandchildren, Nicholas, Hannah, Jennifer, Allison, Sydney, Dylan, Austin, and Cody; her great grandchildren, Emma and Gabriella; and her best friend, Barbara Miller.  

   

  Catherine (Kay) was born May 24, 1943, a daughter of John Parmelee and Beatrice Bobzin. She grew up and lived her life in the Fort Hill area of LeRoy, NY.

     Kay earned her degree in Physical Education from West Virginia University and was a proud Mountaineer. She taught physical education at Pavillion Central, Perry Central, Caledonia-Mumford Central, and for 18 years at LeRoy Central school. During her years teaching, you would find Mrs. P in the gym or on the athletic fields long after the school day was complete as she enjoyed coaching. She coached varsity soccer, volleyball, softball, cheerleading, and track and field. She led Perry Central cheerleaders to a Section V championship.

     Kay passionately enjoyed gardening and her home is surrounded by the marvelous gardens she created. She was always very content pulling weeds in those gardens, quilting with Barb, and was an avid spectator at all of her grandchildren’s activities. She was an adoring and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. You will find her on a country road, in the place she belongs.

     At the family’s request, there will be no public visitation or services. Kay will be laid to rest privately.

Batavia – Mary DiMartino, age 95, passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2023 at the LeRoy Village Nursing Home.

She was born Monday, March 21st, 1927 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Frank DiMartino and Antoinette DiPietro DiMartino.

A member of Ascension Parish, Mary was a promoter of St. Lucy Devotion and the Miraculous Medal. A hard and dedicated worker, Mary was the manager of The Good Friend Shop in downtown Batavia and the Holley Shop in Rochester.  She also worked at Doehler-Jarvis, Genesee Hardware, and was a longtime employee at K-Mart.

She is survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She is predeceased by her siblings, Anthony DiMartino, Fred DiMartino and Angeline Wyrwa.

There are no prior visiting hours. Mary’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 23, 2023  at 11 am at Ascension Parish, 19 Sumner Street, Batavia. Eloise T. (Bartz) Brown, age 88, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2023.

     Eloise was born on November 9, 1934 in Batavia, NY to Anthony and Teresa (Tenney) Bartz.

     She worked at the Alexander School cafeteria and later at the Genesee County Nursing Home.  After her retirement, Eloise spent time volunteering at the Crossroads House in Batavia, NY.  She later moved to Scotia, NY where she spent her time with her Great Grandchildren Zachary and Kendall Hilt.  Eloise loved spending her time with her family and attending all of their sporting events.  She had a very strong Catholic faith.

     Eloise is predeceased by son, Duane Brown and survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Anthony) Hurd; grandchildren, Kelly (James) Hilt, Kori (Bill) MacNeal, Roger (Nicole) Brown and Shannon (Timothy) Hill; great grandchildren Zachary & Kendall Hilt, Patrick & Autumn Lewis, Bailey & Kennedy Hill, Brady & Dillon Hill, Arianna & Gabrielle Brown, and Taylor, Tristan & Ryan Riley and great-great grandchild, Rose Lewis; sibling, Gerald Bartz; sisters-in-law, Norma Bartz and Rosie Bartz (Ed Olczak) and brother-in-law, Larry MacConnell.  She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and special niece Lori (Matthew) Laney.

     Eloise is predeceased by brothers, Norman, Richard and Gary Bartz and sister, Patricia.

  Splendora M. DiSanto, 97, of Batavia passed away peacefully on January 12, 2023.  She was born in Oakfield on September 21, 1925 to the late Domenico and Ida (Comino) Moretti. In addition to her parents, Splendora is predeceased by her husband; Anthony DiSanto of 40 years of marriage. 

Splendora owned her own beauty shop, Splendora's, and was a beautician until she retired at 73.  She loved her family and friends and enjoyed special holiday meals with her family.  Her specialties were lemon meringue pie and chocolate topped cream puffs.  

She is survived by her children George DiSanto, Dawn DiSanto, and David DiSanto (who passed away in 2019).  She is also survived by her grandchildren Michael (Jessica Veeder) DiSanto, and Jonathan (Sherrity Buckel) DiSanto, and her great-grandchildren Jevan, Emily, Kady, Joshua, Jayce, Rainier, and Corbin DiSanto, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Beaver Island, Michigan - Dennis Onofrio Monachino, age 68, died suddenly on December 21, 2022 on Beaver Island, Michigan.

He was born on June 7, 1954 in Batavia. He is predeceased by his parents, Pat C. and Mary Ellen (McDonough) Monachino.

Dennis is survived by his loving daughter, Crystal Brook Monachino; step-daughter, Carla King and her children, Rhonda, Godfrey, Damien and Austin King; step-grandson Brandon Bragg, Jr. who is predeceased by his father, Brandon Bragg, Sr.; siblings, Cynthia, Julie, Patrick (Anne Marie) and Thomas (Daun) Monachino; his companion, Eileen Woolford-Ballard; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nephews and a grand-niece.

Dennis traveled the world on his terms. He grew up in Batavia, then lived and worked in LeRoy, St. Augustine, Florida, Fort Wayne Indiana and settled in Beaver Island, Michigan. His spirit of adventure took him to faraway places like Australia and New Zealand. Dennis was an accomplished musician and artist. He regularly entertained family, friends and local audiences on Beaver Island with his superb guitar playing and singing. He shared his drawings with all who appreciated his art. His generosity and commitment to family were well known as was his love for, and mastery of, motorcycling, boating, antiquing, music and horsemanship.

Dennis was a jack-of-all-trades who loved to build and rebuild anything motorized and mobile. He worked as a local and long-haul truck driver as well as an international importer/exporter. In retirement he returned to his beloved Beaver Island-the island that captured his heart as a boy-where he owned and rode horses and sailed Lake Michigan.

Batavia - Margaret Kelley, 98 of Batavia, passed away on Tuesday, (January 10, 2023) at Elderwood at Hamburg in Hamburg.

Mrs. Kelley was born July 16, 1924 in Binghamton, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Zelynak.

The youngest of 12 children, Margaret was a devoted wife and mother. Her family was truly her life. 

Margaret is the wife of  the late Truman E. Kelley.

Surviving are her children, Patricia Kelley of Hamburg, and Timothy (Crysty) Kelley of South Carolina. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Batavia - Kathleen  "Kathy"  Hopkins, 68  of Oakfield passed away on Friday, January 13, 2023 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Kathy was born Saturday, April 3rd, 1954 in Buffalo, NY, daughter of the late Victor and Theodora (Switek) Rydzynski.

She was a member of the Oakfield volunteer fire department for over 20 years. Kathy loved spending time with her family, decorating for the holidays (both inside and out), and hosting family holiday dinners.

Kathy graduated from the John F. Kennedy High School and married David Hopkins, who predeceased her in 2001. She loved her job as a teachers Aide for Oakfield-Alabama Central school until the day she retired.

Kathy was a loving wife, a caring and compassionate mother, and affectionate grandmother. She is survived by her husband Russell Young; Children, Dennis (Shana) Hoy, Christopher Hoy and Tracy Minor; Stepchildren, Will (Julie) Young and Michael (Holly) Young; a brother, Dennis Rydzynski; grandchildren, Matt Minor, Andrew Minor, Kayla Hoy, Skylar Hoy, Haylee Hoy, Emersyn Dyer, Drake Dyer, Alexander Hoy, Michael Hoy, Ashlee Young, and Haylee Young; brother in law, Jake (Peg) Fager, Robert (Linda) Young, and Mark (Janine) Young; her fur buddy, Radar, and and many nieces and nephews.

Kathy is predeceased by her husband David Hopkins; sibling, Donald (Arlene) Rydzynski, and her loving parents.

Batavia- Sue R. Arnold, 80 of Batavia passed away on Friday, January 13th, 2023 at Premier Genesee Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Batavia, NY after a lengthy illness.

She was born Friday, October 23rd, 1942 in Elmira, NY a daughter of the late Raymond and Minnie (Calkins) Kline. Sue graduated from Batavia High School in 1961. She met her husband , Edward Arnold in 1964, cruising around Batavia. Sue said “ he was the best looking guy she had ever seen in his 59 Ford Galaxy”. They were married in November of 1968.

Sue worked for many years at Genesee Hardware in Batavia and enjoyed socializing with all her customers. She loved country life and enjoyed baking, canning, & sewing. Her passion was her vegetable and flower gardens. She also devoted her time to her dogs and grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Minnie Kline, sisters, Trudy Werner and Gladys Confer, and brother Edward Gifford.

She is survived by her husband, Edward Arnold, her sons, Jerald (Kim) Arnold, and Jeff (Stacey Stachowski) Arnold, her grandchildren, Cody (Catelin Andrews) Arnold, Casey ( Leah Thompson) Arnold, Carley Arnold, Brandon Arnold, Bradly ( Sara Zakes) Arnold and several nieces / nephews.

Batavia - Betty J. "Boogie" Morgan Luperino, age 83, passed away on Friday, December 30, 2022 at the LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home.

She was born on May 11, 1939, in Warsaw, a daughter of the late Charles Morgan and Florence Burse Morgan.

A 1957 graduate of Notre Dame High School, Betty graduated from the Catherine McCauley School of Practical Nursing in 1959. An LPN at the former St. Jerome Hospital, Betty also did spiritual care at area hospitals following her retirement. Betty was a member of St. Joseph's Church, board member and trustee emeritus of The Jerome Foundation, volunteer and former board member for St. Jerome Guild and volunteer at Crossroads House.
 
Betty took pride in being a nurse; she was a true caregiver.  She loved being with others whether it was a Notre Dame get together, meal with friends, or visiting with family and friends.  Betty was known for enjoying a good story and a good laugh.  She was a wonderful Aunt to her nieces and nephews; she was a big part of their lives that they are grateful for.  Telling stories of growing up with Aunt Betty always ends with laughter and love.

Her husband, Joseph J. Luperino, passed away on December 23, 2007.

She is survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She is the sister of the late Kenneth (Virginia) Morgan, Mary Louise (Leonard) Iannello, Phyllis (John) Mulcahy and Donald (Kay) Morgan.

Pembroke - Clarence D. Crawford, 91, of Pembroke passed away on January 11, 2023 after a brief illness.  

Known to most by his middle name, Denzil, he was born in West Virigina on August 15, 1931 to Clarence and Lucille Crawford.  

Denzil worked most of his adult life at Sylvania, in Batavia.  In the late 1970’s he and his late wife Faith (Switzer) entered into a partnership to operate the True Value hardware store in Corfu.  Upon retirement they toured the country in their motor home.

Denzil is survived by his sons Greg (Charlotte) and Bill (Pam).  He is also survived by six loving grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He is preceded in death by his wife, his twin sisters Betty Lou and Bonny Sue, and by his son Lester.

Duane Clarence Cook of Lockport, New York, age 101, passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at Lockport Rehab and Health Care Center.  Mr. Cook was born October 21, 1921 in St. Jerome’s Hospital, Batavia, New York, and was the eldest son of the late Clarence and Nora (Thompson) Cook.  

Mr. Cook grew up on a farm in Indian Falls, New York, and graduated in 1949 from Cornell University with a degree in Agricultural Economics.   He married the love of his life, Shirley Steiner of Crittenden, New York on February 11, 1950.   Mr. Cook later earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University at Buffalo and worked as case supervisor for the Child Protection Unit at the Niagara County Department of Social Services until his retirement in 1978.  

During his 100th birthday celebration last year, Mr. Cook reminisced about how his life growing up on the farm began in the era of the horse and buggy, and included the introduction of electricity, the radio, and automobiles.  He was passionate about history, especially the Civil War era, and was an avid Buffalo Bills fan. 

Mr. Cook is predeceased by Shirley Steiner Cook, who passed away on February 10, 2012.  He is also predeceased by brothers Calvin (late Irene) Cook and Stewart (late Ruth) Cook, and sisters Verna (late Gerry) Reynolds and Leona (late Francis) Harloff.  

Surviving are his brother, Elliott (late Cookie) Cook of Alameda, California, and his children, Douglas (Mona) Cook of Auburn, California and Ginny (Roger) McEldowney of Carefree, Arizona.   

He is also survived by granddaughter Elizabeth (Carter) Navarro of Holliston, Massachusetts, great-grandchildren Alexander and Emily Navarro, and granddaughter Jennyfer Lindsay-Cook of Alameda, California, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

A memorial service and interment will be planned for this summer at Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Corfu, New York.  Arrangements are being made by C.B. Beach & Son Mortuary in Corfu, NY.
