Mildred C. (Francis) Glor, 96 of Henrietta, formerly of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday (June 2, 2021) at her residence under the loving care of her family and hospice.

She was born August 6, 1924, the daughter of the late Edward and Agnes Sczepanski Graff.

She is predeceased by her husbands, Roger Francis in 1989, Richard Glor in 2013. Also the sister of the late Harold Graff, Dorothy Winch, Edward Graff Jr. and Paul Graff.

Survivors include her son and daughter in-law, Lynn (Cynthia) Francis of Rochester. Grandchildren, Brent Francis, Emily (Todd Rosenzwieg), Bradley (Amy) Francis. 7 Great-grandchildren. Brother and sisters, Rita Amend, Irene Cherry and Alfred (Sharon) Graff.

Robert Dusen, 102, of Attica, passed away on June 3, 2021 at the NYS Veterans Home in Batavia. Bob was born May 23, 1919 in Batavia to the late Frank and Lillian Dusen. He is predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Shirley Goodliff Dusen; daughter Roberta McCullar; granddaughter Laurie Watson; brothers Lloyd, Earl & Donald; sisters Viola & Hazel.

Bob grew up in Batavia and graduated from Batavia High School in 1938. In 1941 he was drafted by the Army Air Corps where he spent his time in England maintaining B17’s. Bob came home to Batavia where he worked as a carpenter and raise his family before moving to Bennington in 1962. He spent several years as a member of North Darien Bible Church and spent his time whittling and creating wood carvings.

Bob spent his final years in Attica before moving into the NYS Veterans Home in 2017.

Bob is survived by his children Bonnie Chimiak of Michigan, Wayne (Sharon) Dusen, Mark (Lynn) Dusen of Attica and Troy Dusen of Florida, his loving grandchildren, several great and great-great-grandchildren and many dear nieces and nephews, and sister-in-law Dolores Coughlin of Batavia.

JULY 6, 1930 - MAY 27, 2021

Robert Burns, 90, of Vero Beach, Fla., passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home under the loving care of VNA Hospice on May 27, 2021 to be reunited in Heaven with his parents Archie and Harriet.

Bob was a fixture in his Vero Beach neighborhood, which he patrolled daily with his beloved nonhuman companions Trixie and Dixie. He embraced the warmth of many neighbors and friends and excelled in his ability to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds. He possessed a sharp wit and a genuine smile.

He relished working with his hands, tinkering in his workshop and passing the time of day with a face-to-face chat with people of all walks of life. A Veteran of the United States Army and former engineer with Conrail, Bob enjoyed each day of his retirement and the warmth of the Florida sunshine in his adopted Vero Beach.

In addition to his many, many friends he is survived by: his three children Robert (Linda) Burns, of Memphis, Tenn., Lori (Howard) Cohen, of South Carolina, Thomas (Kelly) Burns, of Batavia, NY; his four grandchildren; his former wife Antoinette Burns, of Batavia, NY; his surviving siblings, nieces and nephews; as well as his best friend and confidant Angela, who over many years shared with Bob all that should be enjoyed in the daily experience of a true friendship.

At his request no services will be held and Bob will be returned to his native Upstate New York for burial in his final resting place near his deceased family members.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that a donation be made in his memory to Hospice VNA of Vero Beach or any animal rescue organization of the donor's choice.

Medina - Patricia  J.  Hendershott-Matthews, 85, passed away on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at Orchard Rehab and Nursing Center in Medina.

She was born  August 4, 1935 in Albion, a daughter of the late Thomas and Jenny Tuttle Monagan.

She worked as a lab technician for Eastman Kodak in Rochester for many years and was an avid motorcycle rider and was a member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association and The Elba Elegants. While she resided at Orchard Manor Nursing Home she served as the president of the resident council, an honor she was very proud of.  A longtime fan and former season ticket holder for the Buffalo Bills, she loved the outdoors and was a huge fan of Elvis Presley.  She enjoyed singing karaoke, playing Bingo and card games, especially euchre and skip-bo.

Patricia is the wife of Douglas R. Hendershott Sr. who passed away on April 21, 1991.

She is survived by her children; Susan (Karl) Slate of Batavia, Douglas R. (Debra) Hendershott, Jr. of Oakfield, Kevin (Barbara) Hendershott Sr. and Thomas (Christine) Hendershott, both of the Town of Alabama, NY; son-in-law, Thomas Pillo of Batavia,16 grandchildren; Jennifer Gangi, Eric (Juan) Slate, Daniel Gangi, Jaimee (Cory) Coles, Barbara Hendershott, Patricia (Pedro) Diaz , Douglas Hendershott III, Kevin (Courtney) Hendershott, Jr., Mathew (Elise) Hendershott, David (Nastia) Hendershott, Jessica (Josh) Maskell, Darcy Hendershott, Steven Maskell, Mack Marinaccio, Keith Pillo and Kristina Simon ; 15 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law; Betty Monagan of Batavia and several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her children; Catherine (late Doug) Hendershott-Donnelly, Keith (late Sandra) Hendershott and Sherryl A. Pillo and her siblings; Henry, William, Thomas and Albert Monagan, Mary Demmer, Lorraine Kinney, Bertha Dibble, Evelyn Hale and Ida Townsend.

Batavia - Robert  J.  Chatt, age 82, of Batavia  passed away on Sunday, February 14, 2021 at Unity Hospital in Rochester.

Mr. Chatt was born July 2, 1938 in Batavia, New York a son of the late Peter Chatt and Mildred Sprague Chatt.

Robert was a longtime employee at the Genesee County Highway Department and United States Army Veteran.

Surviving are  his wife of 62 years, Shirley R. Campbell Chatt; his children, Robert M. (Becky) Chatt Oakfield, Lori A. (Michael) Brooks of Florida, Brett R. (Patty) Chatt of South Carolina and Christy R. (Sean) Cramer of Florida; his daughter-in-law, Terry Chatt of Buffalo. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his sons, Wade A. Chatt in 2011 and Scott A. Chatt in 2013 and his siblings, Marion (Richard) Long, Gloria (Robert) Lang, Peter (Elsie) Chatt, Raymond Chatt and Beatrice (Wayne) Kjos.

There are no prior calling hours. Batavia - Clifford  F. Shultz, Sr. age 55, of Batavia  passed away on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia, following a brief illness.

He was born December 20, 1965 in Batavia and is predeceased by his father, Gary L. Shultz and his step-mother Kathleen "Cookie" M. Hicks Shultz.

Cliff enjoyed going to Genesee Speedway to watch the races and was a fan of the Buffalo Bills. He loved to go fishing with his boys and spending time with his granddaughters.  

He is survived by his sons, Clifford F. Shultz, Jr. and Christopher Shultz, both of Batavia; mother of his children; Michele Shultz of Batavia; granddaughters, Giavanna and Harper Shultz and his sister, Angela Doran Bristol, Tennessee.

Robert M. Lubecki, 74 of Akron, passed away suddenly on Friday (May 28, 2021) at Sisters of Charity Hospital in Buffalo, NY.

He was Born October 30, 1946 in Buffalo, a son of the late Edward and Charlotte Konka Lubecki.

Mr. Lubecki was employed as a supervisor for Harrison Radiator in Lockport prior to his retirement.

Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Maria Lubecki. Children, Scott (Judy) Lubecki, Michelle Lubecki, Kirk Lubecki and Jennifer King. Grandchildren, Angelica, Gabriella, Andrew, Kelsey, Kirk Jr., Ramsey, Ryan and Courtney. Brothers, Richard and John Lubecki. Also survived by nieces and nephews, especially Robin (Mark) Owen.

He was the brother of the late Geraldine Lubecki.

Herbert Schmieder, 92 of Alexander, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 27, 2021. 

Herbie was born September 7, 1928 to the late George and Rosa (Beck) Schmieder and was a lifelong resident of Alexander. As a child, he attended the Cobblestone School until the new school was built in 1939 across the street. It was there that he met and fell in love with his wife of 70 years, Anita Welker. They married in 1948 and went on to have 5 children. Upon graduation from Alexander High School, he trained as a mason. He was a highly sought-after bricklayer whose work is prolific throughout Genesee County. He was known for his precision and work ethic.

Herbie’s family will always remember him for his kind heart, gentle spirit, sense of humor, love of family and friends and his famous Doodlebug rides.

Herbie was preceded in death by his parents, wife and siblings Hilda (Carlton) Lippold, Fred (Marilyn) Schmieder, Arnold (Betty) Schmieder, George Schmieder, Paul Schmieder, Erma (Fran) Andre, and Shirley Plescia.

He is survived by his children, David Schmieder, Rosalie (Ken) Lyons, Priscilla (Nicholas) Di Risio, Robert (Mary Jo Schilling) Schmieder, Doreen Tambe, 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

A 9:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Sts. Joachim & Anne Parish, 50 East Ave, Attica, NY 14011. He will be laid to rest in St. Vincent’s Cemetery, Attica.

Batavia - Marilyn B. Thurau, 89 of Batavia, passed away on Monday, (December 21, 2020) at Conesus Lake Nursing Home in Livonia.

Mrs. Thurau was born January 21, 1931 in Gloversville, a daughter of the late Franklin and Catherine (Havelaar) Brown.

Marilyn was a graduate of Batavia High School and thereafter the State University College for Teachers at Buffalo. She taught Elementary Art in the Batavia School System in the 1950s. She was a bridal consultant at C.L. Carr Department Store from 1981-1988.

She was a member of St. James Episcopal church, a past member of the Altar Guild, past member of the Vestry, and former Sunday School teacher. A past member of the Genesee Memorial Hospital League and past member of the YWCA Board of Directors.

Marilyn is the wife of the late Don M. Thurau; mother of the late Sara (late Ray) Rogers; and sister of the late Joan (late Dean) Dymond.

She is survived by her daughters, Beth (Bernard) Newhard of South Dennis, Mass., and Carrie (Eric) Kress of Livonia; grandchildren, Abigail, Samantha, and Erin Kress, Bridget and Patricia Newhard, and Terese Rogers.

There will be no visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend Marilyn's Funeral Service at 11:00 am on Thursday (June 3, 2021) at St. James Episcopal Church, 405 East Main Street in Batavia. Batavia - Mary Hart Kelly, 91 of Batavia, passed away on Wednesday, (March 10, 2021) at LeRoy Village Green Residential Health Care Facility in LeRoy.

Ms. Kelly was born August 29, 1929 in Tionesta, Forest County, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late Bernard Matthew Kelly and Katherine (Hart) Kelly.

In 1933 her family moved back to B.M. Kelly’s hometown, Ellicottville, New York.  Mary attended Ellicottville High School, graduating in 1947.  She attended Villa Maria College (now part of Gannon University) graduating with a BS in Education in 1951. She taught Home Economics in Ripley,  Ellicottville, and Batavia, New York, where she retired in 1984. She spent most summers traveling the world, while taking advanced courses in Spanish, History and English Literature.  

She was an avid skier, into her early 80’s, having learned while in high school, on Greer Hill in Ellicottville.  Her home in the Batavia area was in Seven Springs Country Club. She was instrumental in starting the family camp on Brennan Road, Ellicottville.  For many years she spent her winters on the QEII and the new Queen Mary, on trips to New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, India, Dubai, and South Africa.

While at home she enjoyed life with her beloved Labradors, family and friends. Mary was an avid quilter, and soft toy maker.  Many people still cherish her sewn goods.

She attended church at St. Joseph’s in Batavia and Holy Name of Mary parish in Ellicottville.

She is survived by her younger brother Joseph B. Kelly, nieces and nephews; Mark (Catherine) Kelly, Joan (Doug) Pike, Beth (John) Cotton, Brian (Terry) Kelly, Sara Kelly, Kathy Blackford, Sean (Karen) Kelly, and Aileen (Mark) Smith plus 12 great nieces and nephews and 4 grand nieces and nephews.

Mary is Preceded in death by her older brother Bernard M Kelly, Jr.

Robert Bruce Mertens, 85 of Akron, passed away peacefully on Wednesday (April 22, 2020) at the New York State Veterans Home in Batavia.

He was born June 9, 1934, a son of the late George and Mary Johnson Mertens.

Bruce as he was known by so many people was the owner of Merts Wholesale Auto Parts in Akron.  Bruce had served his country with the U.S. Army from 1954-1956.  He was a longtime member of the Akron Newstead Rotary Club and was also a member of the American Legion and VFW. He enjoyed collecting stamps and coins and was an avid history buff.

He was predeceased by his wife, Doris Mertens and son, Michael Mertens.

Surviving are his children, Robert (Patti) Mertens of Buffalo, Deborah (Michael) Kiel of Cheektowaga, Todd (Laurie Ann) Mertens of Cheektowaga and Patricia (late Walter) Sherron of Richmond, VA. Daughter in-law, Ginny Mertens of Arizona. Also survived by 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service with Military Honors will be held Saturday (June 5^th), 11:00am at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery, Bloomingdale Rd., Akron, NY.

Bergen - Marjorie Mae Busmire, 80 of Bergen, passed away on Wednesday, (May 26, 2021) at Harris Hill Nursing Home in Williamsville.

Mrs. Busmire was born February 13, 1941 in Rochester, a daughter of the late Robert C. and Neva (Gage) Johnson.

She was an active member of the Bergen United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post 575 Ladies Auxiliary where she was Past President. Marjorie worked for a time at the Viking Valhalla and the Byron-Bergen High School Cafeteria. She was a hairdresser and a member of the former Helping Hands Sunshine Club of Bergen. Mrs. Busmire was a Girl Scout Leader for a time and a volunteer at the Gilliam-Grant Community Center where she amassed over 3000 volunteer hours.

Marjorie is the wife of  the late Harris Arthur Busmire, Sr. and sister of the late Marie Johnson.

She is survived by her children, Annette (Gene) Boldt of South Byron, and Harris A. Busmie, Jr. of Bergen; a grandson, Jacob (Ashley) Kuczynski of North Chili; three great-grandchildren, Abraham, Madelyn, and Micah Kuczynski; siblings, Frederick Johnson of Le Roy, Judith (late William) Zirbes of Rochester, and Walter (Mary) Johnson of Le Roy; a sister-in-law, Patricia (late Howard) Busmire of Bergen; brothers-in-law, Richard (Kay) Busmire of Liberty, S. Carolina, Richard (Joyce) Sands of Bergen, and Donald (Reba) Sands of Rochester. She is also survived by her grand fur babies, Andy, Crista, and Zoey.

January 27, 1931 – May 24, 2021

Duane Lee Squires, 90, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., passed away on May 24, 2021.

Born in Buffalo, N.Y., he was the son of the late Paul L. Squires and Nellie Glidden Squires.

He was a graduate of Batavia High School, Class of 1949, and attended Edison Tech in Rochester, N.Y. He served a four-year apprenticeship in the Bricklayers, Masons, and Plasters International Union and worked in the trade until 1954 when he cofounded Manning and Squires Co., which later became Manning Squires Hennig Co. Inc., and where he presided as president until 1996.

He was a member of the New York State Chapter of the Associated General Contractors, Rochester Builders Exchange, past president of the Byron, N.Y., Kiwanis Club, a graduate assistant for Dale Carnegie, and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

He was known for his love of people, his integrity, his labored attention to detail and the neighborhood squirrels which he fed daily. He was an easy acquaintance to all and cared deeply for others. As a closet novelist, he filled numerous binders with hundreds of short stories of his life’s experiences. A modern day romantic, he serenaded the love of his life on a daily basis and showered her with love for 68 years.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Shultz); sisters, Jean Dudley of Batavia, N.Y. & Donna Krause of Bergen, N.Y.; four children, Douglas (Karen) of Charlotte, N.C., Gary (Catherine) of Churchville, N.Y., David (Judy) of Maricopa, Ariz., & Sandy (Stewart) of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; grandchildren, Brad, Brenda (Nate) Nord, Jacob, Adam (Fia), Matt (Chelsea), Ashley (Colin) McCabe, Pat (Carly), Selena, Josh, & Skylar; & great-grandchildren, Ryann, Avery, Beckett, Finn, Damian, Hugh, Gus, Ruby, Savonne, & Shanice.

Visitation is planned for 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 30, 2021 at the First United Methodist Church in Myrtle Beach, immediately followed by a Memorial Service at 2 p.m.

Mildred E. Bell (nee Staiber). On April 30, 2021 at age 97, Mildred joined her husband Raymond J. Bell after being separated for 21 years. There was great joy when Mildred and Raymond joined their daughter Barbara (Kline) Roberts and their son Raymond (Nancy). Mildred was welcomed by her parents, Henry and Nora Staiber, and her brother George (Theresa) Staiber. Also joining in the celebration were her sisters, Marion (Thomas) Foster, Clare (Charles) Buecheler, and Barbara (William) Frisch. They were surrounded by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Surviving on earth are her children Janet (James) Brunner, Joan (Charles) Williams and Joseph (Diane) Bell, along with her sister Jean (Frank) McCormick, and brothers John (Gerry) Staiber and Mike (Peggy) Staiber. Mildred left behind sixteen grandchildren, twenty three great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.

A 12:00PM noon Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday June 5^th, 2021 at Sts. Joachim & Anne Parish, 2311 Attica Rd. Varysburg, NY 14167. She will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Richfield Springs, N.Y. ~ John Ray Sovocool, age 65, passed away early Thursday morning (May 20, 2021) at Crossroads House in Batavia surrounded by his loving family.

   

  He was born January 25, 1956 at Pepperrell Air Force Base, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, a son of the late Wilbur J. Sovocool and the late MaryAnne Cranston Sovocool.

     John was a proud graduate of Cornell University, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.  While there he was a member of the U.S, Air Force ROTC program, and upon graduation was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant.  John served his country in many notable assignments around the world before retiring from the Air Force with the rank of Major.  John owned and operated Fieldstone Farm Resort in Richfield Springs from 1998 until the summer of 2020 and his wife, Jean, joined him in the Fall of 2009.  Together, they made every guest feel welcomed and like family.

     John was an avid long-distance runner who ran 98 marathons, including 10 Boston Marathons and at least one in each of the 50 states.  He also loved working with wood and stained glass, was a stonemason and landscaper and was considered by all to be a true artisan in these mediums.

     John will be sadly missed by his loving and devoted wife Jean Barr Sovocool; children, John E. Sovocool, Adam Sovocool (Nancy), Kristin (Ben Cook) Sovocool, Nicholas Sovocool (Kelsey) and Alexander Sovocool; step-children, Alison Barr (Robert) and Robert Faucett (Mickie); grandchildren, Chayden, Hayden, Ashton, Henrik, Samuel and Viviane; siblings, Robert Sovocool of LeRoy, Sharon (Gary) Harris of Chanhassen MN, Wayne (Joan) Sovocool of Madison AL, Daniel (Ber) Sovocool of Portugal, Charles (Suzanne) Sovocool of Fairport and Kathleen DelPlato (Robert) of LeRoy; sister-in-law, Kathy Sovocool of Batavia, along with several nieces, nephews and dear friends.

     In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Patricia and brother, Kenneth.

     There are no prior calling hours.  A public Memorial Celebration of John's life will be held at a future date.
