Angelica, NY – Adrian Vladimir Gregory-Kielbasa, 26, of Center Street, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, in the Town of Cohocton. He was born January 23, 1998, in Batavia, the son of Jason Kielbasa and Miranda Gregory.

 Adrian was raised in Elba and Scio, graduating from Scio Central School in 2017. He was the owner and operator of Grateful Tie Dyes, after inheriting it from special friend Mike “Wook” Whitney. He loved animals, dirt bikes, and was involved with the Dam Show of Austin, PA and Esitival Festival of Caneadea, NY . He was an avid nature lover, an artist, and a poet.

 He is survived by: his mother Miranda (Danny Coleman) Gregory and father Jason Kielbasa; siblings, twin Alexsander Gregory-Kielbasa, Baileigh Higby, Tatum Higby, and Jade Higby; grandparents, Joy & Frank Kielbasa, Robert & Sherry Gregory, and Dan Coleman; aunts Carrie (Cortney) Gale, Bridget Fairfield, and Katie Mills; uncle Adam (Stephanie Harris) Shipwash; acquired brother, Dahmus Logue; close friend, Whitefeather; as well as several cousins. He was predeceased by: great-grandmothers, Janet Williams and Francis “Babci” Kielbasa; acquired brother, Colin McCabe; and special friends, Michael Whitney and Matt Fuller.

Mary K. Cullen, 93, of Corfu, NY passed away peacefully on July 7, 2024.  Mary was born in Bunnacranna, County Sligo, Ireland on January 28, 1931.  She emigrated from Ireland to Auburn, NY at the age of 21 with her sister Nora.  She was the daugther of the late James and Catherine (Maye) Brett.

Mary (Maura) was the wife of the late John (Jack) F. Cullen and she was the mother of Mary Beth (Bart) Pricola, of Brockport; Fr. John Cullen, Pastor of N.W. Allegheny County Catholic Churches; Daniel (Meris) Cullen of Beaver, PA; Noreen (Mark) Bull, of Beaver, PA; Kathleen (Chris) Dollard of Darien; James (Lori) Cullen of Pittsburgh, PA; Maureen Cullen (Don Taylor) of Corfu; and Patricia Cullen of Batavia as well as 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.  She ia also survived by her sisters Nora (Paul) Pickett of Baldwinsville, Bernadette Brett of Fulton and brother PJ Brett of Derby, England as well as her sisters-in-law Adelaide DeMaso and Lorraine Cullen of Auburn as well many nieces and nephews.   Mary was predeceased by her sister, Ursula Brett, brothers James and Michael Augustine Brett, sister-in-law Mary Brett and niece Anna Brett.

Mary retired after 20 years at Kutter's Cheese Factory.  She also served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years at St. Maximillian Kolbe Parish at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Corfu.  She was a woman of great Catholic faith and love of her family and friends.

Beatrice Elva DeMaupassante, known affectionately as Elva or Bea, passed away peacefully at her home in LeRoy, N.Y. on May 15, 2024. Born on December 14, 1938, in Batavia, N.Y., Elva was the beloved daughter of the late Marie Poles Smith and James Curtis Smith of LeRoy.

     Elva graduated from LeRoy High School in 1956, where she formed lifelong friendships that she cherished dearly.  Her fondness of reading, particularly stories about World War II and biographies of the Stars, was a testament to her love for history and people.

     Elva was known for her love of news and conversation, always ready to share a story or lend a listening ear.  Her warmth and friendliness left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

     She is survived by her daughter, Chan Marie DeMaupassante; her granddaughter, Destiny Cummings Gonzalez (Thomas) and two great-grandchildren, Jasper Tomas and Indigo Rain Gonzalez.  Also left to mourn is her dear friend, Linda Forti, with whom she spent countless hours, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

     Family and friends may call on Monday evening, July 15 from 7 ~ 9 PM at the Falcone Family Funeral & Cremation Service Inc., 8700 Lake St. Rd., LeRoy. Elva’s graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 16 at 11:00 AM at Machpelah Cemetery, followed by a repass luncheon.

Kerry D. Green, 75 of Bethany, passed away peacefully on Saturday (July 6, 2024) at Strong Memorial Hospital.

He was born November 9, 1948 in Batavia, NY, a son of the late Norman “Dewey” and Vivian “Jeanette“ Dembowski Green.

He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with the U.S. Army. Kerry was a farmer all of his life. He loved working with animals and being outside. As a teen, he worked for many farms in the neighborhood. As an adult, he worked for Kreutter Farm for many years, operated his own farm for 10 years, then worked for Dills Brothers, and finally for Lor-Rob (East view) Farms until his retirement. Even after his retirement, he continued to work part-time at Lor-Rob Farms. Most of all, Kerry loved his family and will be missed very much.

He was the brother of the late Duane Green, Gary “Doug” Green and Danny (late Virginia) Green.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Judy Czworka Green of Bethany. Children, Christy (Ben) Stoddard of East Bethany, Brian (Alexis) Green of Batavia and Douglas (Casey) Green of East Bethany. Grandchildren, Jordyn Platt (Dustin Smathers), Landen Stoddard, Jaxson Stoddard, Caleb Green, Zoey Green and Xander Green. Brothers, Mark Green of Varysburg and Scott Green of Buffalo. Sisters in-law, Sandra Green of Corfu and Nancy Green of Alexander. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Arlene (nee Glor) Teal, beloved wife of the late Charles Teal, passed away at the Leroy Village Green on July 5, 2024. Arlene was born at home on September 12, 1938 in Alexander, NY and was the cherished daughter of the late Allen and Martha (nee Schlenker) Glor.

Arlene was a member of the Alexander Class of 1956. She was the mother of Larry (Mary) Quinn, the late James Quinn, Cynthia (Peter) Antonucci, Garry (Barbra) Quinn, Lorrie Quinn Treat and Jerry (Diane) Quinn; stepmother of Daniel (Maryann) Teal, Ronald Teal, Judith (late Clyde) Bowden, the late Michael Teal and the late Timothy Teal. Arlene is survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was the dear sister of Elam (late John) Smith and was predeceased by siblings; Marie (Norman) Smith, Violet (Irving) Colton, Doris (Robert) Besock, Leo (Evelyn) Glor; grandson Nicholas Antonucci and brother in law Gary Teal.

Arlene was a retired child caregiver and a homemaker who enjoyed cooking and baking. She loved to fish and was a lifelong Buffalo Bills fan. She had a spicy sense of humor and loved to make people laugh, especially the staff and residents at the Leroy Village Green. Her family is forever grateful to that staff for the loving and joyful care they gave to her.

Henning, Doreen O."Duckie" (Revett); of Hamburg, NY, passed away on July 2, 2024, at the age of 97. 
Beloved wife of the late Chief of the Orchard Park Police Robert C. Henning; dearest mother of Susan Brinson of Gardner, NC, Deborah A. (Thomas Rolle) Henning of Buffalo, NY, James A. (Virginia) Henning of Batavia, NY and Pamela D. (Howard) Blair of Hamburg, NY; grandmother of Shannon Eames, Shane (Samantha) Brinson, Nicholas (Amy) Rolle, Summer (Jeremy) Mahler, Aaron (Lindsey) Blair, Stephanie (Matt) Morasco, Stephen Rolle, Morgan (Michael) Connolly, Jessica (Paul) Barton, Graham (Julie) Blair, Robert (Stephanie) Henning and 11 great grandchildren; Doreen was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Amie (Rampley) Revett and her brother Geoffrey (late Nancy) Revett.

Loren Edwin Clark, 82, of Batavia passed away on June 28, 2024 at Crossroads House with his wife and daughter by his side after he fought a long courageous battle with brain cancer. He was born in Batavia on April 10, 1942 to the late Loren R. and Angeline (Gioia) Clark. In addition to his parents, Loren is predeceased by his sister in law; Betty Harris. 

Loren worked for the NYS Department of Transportation as a Civil Engineer, followed by Owning and Operating Batavia Atomic Welding and then owning and operating Sure-Cast Industries, Inc., Batavia, NY from which he retired.

Loren was involved in many activities from earlier years he was a Scout and Webelo master, belonged to the FFA in Alexander and later belonged to the North American Die Casting Assoc., SCOPE and was a lifetime member of the U.S. National Parks.  He was a man of many talents and was always working on “projects” in the house, out in the barn and working on his motorhome. He also enjoyed his raspberry, blueberry bushes and gardening. 

He loved traveling the country camping with his wife, Connie, for more than 40 years. They were snowbirds as well. He was a member of ELKS, USA (a Fraternal Organization). His motto was “Life is short…take the scenic route.” Loren enjoyed NASCAR and he was a Buffalo Bills fan. He loved going out to dinner with his family and being involved with the activities of his grandkids and great granddaughter. 

He is survived by his wife of 61 years; Connie L. Clark (Batavia); Son Tom Clark (Akron); Daughter Tammy Gavenda (Paul Gavenda) (Batavia); Sister Sharon Gray-Harrigan (Patrick) (South Africa); Brother-in-Law Jack Harris (Oakfield); Grandson Cody Gavenda (Cassandra Haskins) (Batavia); Granddaughter Bailey McDonnell (Michael McDonnell) (Lancaster); Great-Granddaughter Alessa Gavenda (Middleport) and several cousins, nieces and nephews. 

There will be no prior calling hours and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to be determined as Loren donated his body to U of R School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Louis “Grizz” Scafetta, 72, of Byron, NY passed away peacefully at United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia on Wednesday, July 3rd, 2024.

He was born on October 25th, 1951, in Batavia, New York, the son of the late Antonio and Mary (Cipollone) Scafetta.

He joined the Army and served his country from 1970 to 1972. Upon completion of his service, he married the love of his life Linda Chapell on May 4, 1974, at St. Joseph's Church, Batavia. Throughout their 50 years of marriage, they raised two wonderful children and created a beautiful family and a lifetime of wonderful memories with their grandchildren and great grandchild. Grizz worked as a Maintenance Mechanic at the NYS Veterans Administration in Batavia, New York for 25 years.

He was a member of The American Legion, Coons Club, Elks Lodge 950, Northwood Sportsman Club, and Polish Falcons. Grizz was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, gardening, and spending time at a hunting cabin in Pennsylvania with his friends. He was a skilled craftsman and carpenter who, together with his wife Linda, built their dream log home. He cherished his family and friends and loved spending time with them at gatherings down at the pond.

Grizz is survived by his beloved wife, Linda "Scar" Scafetta of Byron; daughter, Michelle (Scott) Gillard of Batavia; son, Louis Jr. (Kristin Ward) Scafetta of Batavia; grandchildren, Louis III (Aleiah) Scafetta of Varysburg, Lilliana (Emily Murphy) Scafetta of Attica, Madysen (Scott) Tanner of Alexander, Victoria (Alex) Sweetland of Spencerport, Brenden (Aly) Gillard of Batavia, and Olivia Gillard of Batavia; great- grandchild, Rory Tanner of Alexander; brothers, Nicholas (Shelley) Scafetta of Colorado, Salvatore (Renate) Licata of Batavia, Anthony (Debra) Licata of Batavia, Rito (Cathy) Licata of Batavia; sister, Deborah (Keith) Reamer; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In death Louis is reunited with his parents, Antonio and Mary Scafetta; brother, Anthony Scafetta and sister, Angeline Licata.

Russell P. Romano, 78 of Batavia, passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

He was born in Rochester, NY on June 30, 1946, a son of the late Rosario and Laura Formicola Romano.

Russ was a prominent fixture in the real estate industry for Batavia, Genesee County and surroundings, having worked for Nothnagle and Howard Hanna Real Estate Co.. Russ and his wife Gillian worked side by side for close to 50 years. He was a standout football player for Madison High School in Rochester, where he was named an All-American football player and later in life became inducted into the Section V Hall of Fame.  He attended the University of Rhode Island on a football scholarship. Russ played for the Hamilton Tiger Cat’s of the Canadian Football League, but after an injury forced him out of football, he decided to take up another career choice.

For 20 years Russ was a Board Member for Genesee Community College Foundation and was one of the founders of the Genesee Cancer Assistance. He enjoyed golfing, skiing, deer hunting and fly fishing. In his younger years Russ was a steer wrestler who travelled through Canada and a stock car enthusiast at the Genesee County Race Track where he was proud to sponsor “Russ Romano Night”.

But the one trait he will be remembered for is his generosity to his community and “Larger than life” presence he had. Russ will be truly missed for his smile, conversation and knowledge of real estate.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Gillian Romano of Batavia. Children, Daniel Romano (Betsy) of Avon, Stephanie (Alex) Bakker of Webster, Dennis (Nancy) Warner of Batavia and Jill Marie (Scott) Armison of Florida. Grandchildren, Brandon, Cory, Ryan, Alyx, Maddy, John, Danielle, Nicholaas and Gianna.

Batavia ~ Lance R. Sands, age 53, formerly of Tennessee, passed away Tuesday (July 2, 2024) at Premier Genesee Center in Batavia.   

  He was born December 17, 1970 in Batavia, a son of the late Ronald and Dorothy Sands of South Byron.

     Lance enjoyed his profession as a long haul truck driver, riding his Harleys and spending time with his dogs.

     He is survived by his sister, Karen (Steve) Cross of LeRoy, brother, Kevin (Becky) Sands of McKenzie, TN and brother, Dale (Cathy) Sands of Umatilla, FL; his six nieces, Nicol, Rheannon, Ashley, Destiny, Dasia and Caitlin; great-nieces and great-nephews, Cash, Genevieve, Beau, Emeilia and Vera Lynn, along with all of his many friends at Havenwood.

     Services for Lance will be at the convenience of his family.

Frank Joe Vernon, age 91, passed away at home on June 30, 2024 , after bravely battling congestive heart failure and stage 4 kidney disease.

Joe was born February 22, 1933 in Lake City, Arkansas to Pearl Edgar (Slim) Vernon and Ona Louise Shoemaker.

He is survived by his daughter Lee Ann Patterson, (husband Robert) and his sister Mary Alice Boyer (husband Larry), their children and many nieces and
nephews.

He is predeceased by his loving wife Cynthia May, his brothers, James Crawford, Edward and sister Betty.

Joe came from humble beginnings and went to school in a one-room schoolhouse in Dyess, Arkansas. His first job at age seven was water boy; riding a blind mule to the cotton fields by himself to provide drinking water to the cotton pickers. Joe made a personal decision as a young adult to escape the brutal poverty in Arkansas and make something of himself. He enlisted in the Air Force and served from 1951-1955 during the Korean War. His military training began in Tillamook, Oregon for Airplane Mechanic; then Rocket Propulsion Training in Chanute, IL and then at Cape Canaveral, FL for the First Pilotless Squadron. He was a member of NATO and was stationed in Florence, Italy and Frankfort, Germany. When airplanes needed parts or repair, he and his crew would fly to those locations in Morocco, Libya, Greece, Turkey, Yugoslavia, France & more. The barracks where he was stationed in Italy was in an ancient 50-room villa that is still standing today. He told many exciting stories including one time when the captain asked him to pilot the plane (a C119-Flying Boxcar) to Belgium and land it on a tiny grass airstrip. That was the only time he piloted a plane.

After his service he attended college at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, TN and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He met his beautiful wife Cynthia when she roomed with his sister Betty and they married in Mississippi on August 11, 1955. He had two job offers upon graduation, one with U.S. Gypsum in Oakfield, NY and the second in Seattle, Washington. He chose U.S. Gypsum and they moved to Oakfield. He became Superintendent of the Paper Mill and implemented many designs for better production and then went on to be Superintendent of the Board Plant. Toward the end of his career, he took the position of Quality Control Supervisor with U.S. Gypsum for the Northeast U.S., Canada and South America. The job required a lot of traveling troubleshooting issues for commercial and residential. He loved his career and certainly knew everything there was to know about papermaking and wallboard.

He was always worked with his hands and when he was first married, he made most of their furniture. Upon buying their home in Elba he and his wife maintained two huge gardens growing all their own vegetables. They both were very frugal and heated their home with wood we either got out of the forest behind the house or sometimes he had a semi-truck deliver logs which he chain sawed and split by himself to heat the home.

As a hobby, he enjoyed fine woodworking and started building dollhouses for his daughter. They became more intricate over time and he started to make dollhouses from actual house plans, reducing the plans from a foot to half an inch. Overall he has made about 20 dollhouses (all with custom- made furniture) including a full-scale replica of the homestead in Elba. After retirement he put a ship model kit together and that became his real passion. He started to make them from scratch (you know just glue some wood together and start sawing anything away that doesn’t look like a ship.) He has made about 50 sailing ships over the years, which are of museum quality. He had a showing at Go-Art several years ago and the Batavian produced a you-tube video titled “Joe Vernon Sailing Model Ship Building” of which he was very proud of. He showed photos of his ships and spoke of the video to just about every Dr. who took care of him at the Veterans Administration.

He loved unique and fancy vehicles and owned many over the years. He had an Izetta (made by BMW) when they lived in TN which drew a lot of attention. His latest sports car was the BMW Z3 5-speed convertible, which he bought for his wife. He loved driving it and even drove it to kidney dialysis last summer.

He was a remarkable, intelligent and gentle man who will be sorely missed. There are no prior calling hours and services will be private. He will be laid to rest alongside his wife of 63 years.

Rebecca W. Judd “Becky”, 70 of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Saturday (June 29, 2024) at home under the loving care of her family and Hospice.

She was born February 2, 1954 in Batavia, NY, a daughter of the late Raymond and Rowena Webber Dawson

Becky was employed by Summit Physical Therapy prior to her retirement. She loved animals, especially frogs and also enjoyed taking care of her flowers. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.

Survivors include her husband, Daniel Judd of Batavia. Sons, Corrie (Karen) Nutting of Washington and Chad (Courtney) Judd of Batavia. Grandchildren, Jessie Brown, Jacob Windbingler, Colton Judd, Sirius Nutting, Elora Nutting and Curtis Nutting. Great-grandchild, Jazmynn Welch. Siblings, Richard (Corny) Dawson of West Seneca, Ronald (Sheila) Dawson of Arizona, Raymond “Billy” Dawson of Newark and Russell (Trudie) Dawson of Batavia. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Casey Nutting.

Margaret C. Parker, beloved Mother, Aunt, Great-Aunt, Grand-Mother, Great-Grandmother and friend, passed away on Thursday, June 27th, 2024 in Gasport, NY.

She was born on Friday, November 27th, 1931 in Elba, New York, a daughter of the late Andrew and Evelyn (Wigton) Pridmore.

Margaret was a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church of Elba Choir and actively participated in church activities. She was an avid baseball fan and could be seen regularly in the stands watching the Batavia Muckdogs.

Margaret married the love of her life, Donald Parker, in 1962 and enjoyed many happy years together until his passing in 1999. She raised up a wonderful son and was a loving grandmother. She was an Industrial Engineer at Sylvania in Batavia until it closed in 1982. She then worked as a clerk at State Farm in Batavia. She went to work as a Switchboard Operator at Orleans Correctional Facility in Albion, New York, until her retirement.

Friends and family are invited to visitation from 10:00am to 11:00am on Saturday, July 6, 2024 at the First Presbyterian Church of Elba, followed by a funeral service at the First Presbyterian Church of Elba, then burial in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Elba.

Margaret is survived by her son, Christopher (Susan) Parker; Grandchildren Christian Parker of Batavia, Makenzie Parker of Blasdell, and Cooper Parker, of Oakfield, NY; Great-Grandchild Elias Parker of Blasdell; Melissa Barone of Oakfield and many other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Andrew Pridmore, mother, Evelyn Pridmore, spouse, Donald D. Parker, and siblings Linda Pridmore, Jeanette Pridmore, Faye Barone, Allan Pridmore, Raymond Pridmore, and Lawrence Pridmore.

Sylvia R. Merkle Hebell, 76 of Akron and formerly of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at Buffalo General Hospital.

She was born January 5, 1948 in Batavia, NY, a daughter of the late Harry and Adrienne Harding Schaller.

Sylvia was a crafter, a quilter and former 4-H leader. She was an avid reader and enjoyed cross-stitching, crocheting, creating, coloring and unfinished projects.

She was welcomed into heaven by her late husband, Doug Merkle; step-son, Matthew Hebel; her parents, Harry and Adrienne Schaller; sister, Nancy Wilke and Niece, Sue Aichinger

She is survived by her favorite daughter, Kelly Merkle (Rob) Clinard; favorite son, Doug Merkle II. She was the best grammy to Jake and Joe Clinard and Caleb and Anna Merkle. Also survived by her cousin and sidekick, Carol McNally; best big sister, Betty Schaller (Gary) Muchow; friend, Dave Hebell and his son, Chuck Hebell; many nieces, nephews, family and friends

Sheldon - Elaine Pfohl, age 67, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on June 26, 2024, at her home in Sheldon with her loving husband by her side.

Elaine is survived by her devoted husband Michael, and two stepchildren whom she loved dearly, Gus (and wife Kait) and Bryttany Ward (and husband Kyle); granddaughter, Ellery Ward. She is also survived by her brother Emmett (and wife Theresa), her sister Edie (and husband Bill), along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She was also preceded in death by her sister Edwina and brother Eugene. Elaine had a remarkable gift for making friends wherever she went.

Elaine had a deep passion for her horses and dogs, finding solace and joy in riding through State Parks across New York and immersing herself in nature's beauty. Her love for animals extended beyond her own pets, as she found fulfillment in helping those in need.

Family and friends are invited to call on Monday, (July 8, 2024)  from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.at Marley Funeral Home, 135 Main Street in Attica, where a Celebration of Life will be held immediately following visitation at 6:00 p.m. All who knew and loved Elaine are invited to pay their respects and celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made in Elaine's name to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital or the Wyoming County SPCA; organizations that held special meaning to her.
