John A. Rauth, 79, of Varysburg, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2019 at U.M.M.C. after a courageous battle with C.M.L.. He was born in N. Tonawanda on June 28, 1940 to the late Karl and the late Margaret (Schultz) Rauth. John was preceded in death by his brothers, Karl and Paul.

John made his home in Varysburg, NY. He was a Journeyman for General Motors. He will be remembered for his many smiles. John enjoyed socializing and telling stories of his days in the Air Force.

John is survived by his loving wife, Bernice (Mitrowski), their children, Heidi K. Rauth and Jonathan S. Rauth; nephews, Rick and Chris Rauth, Evan and Adrian Bylewski; niece, Jennifer Rauth Piper; adopted granddaughters, Jordan Renee and Kendall Maylie Cizdziel.  John’s family would like to thank their dear friends, Judy, Bill, Betty, Patty, April, Pat, Paul, and friends at Crossroads in Batavia.

   David M. Unger passed away Thursday, September 26, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. David was preceded in death by his father, WWII Veteran and Flying Tiger, Marcus Unger and by his mother, Elizabeth Powderly. 

David is survived by his devoted wife, Maggie Unger, their poodle Pearl and his Kitten, his loving children Shannon Unger and granddog Rocco, Marc Unger, daughter-in-law Erika Unger and grandson Ryker Unger, Amy Sosa, son-in-law Nicolas Sosa, grandchildren Carolina, Enzo and Benicio “Beni” Sosa, Andrew Murrer, daughter-in-law Mackenzie Murrer and his youngest, Elizabeth Murrer. Also surviving David is his stepmother Shirley Unger, sisters Beth Stevens and Debbie Ruflin, brothers James Messecar and Ray Messecar. 

While David’s professional accomplishments are vast, including earning an Associates Degree in Nursing from Genesee Community College, retiring as Lieutenant Colonel from the US Army, attached to the 817th Evacuation Hospital after 15 years of service, and 30 years of dedicated service to the NYS Department of Corrections, his true passion and one of the many legacies that he leaves behind is that of the quintessential American outdoorsman. 

Born in Waterloo, NY on July 30, 1953, David grew up on his parent’s farm, until about the age of 7, when his family moved to the East Pembroke area. It’s there that David’s true love of the outdoors was nurtured and where he learned the hunting and fishing skills that he would pass on to not only his children, but to his wife Maggie, a city girl that he quickly “countrified.” David’s love for outdoor sportsmanship took him on travels all across North America, from the shores of Alaska, through the beautiful states of Montana, Wyoming and Colorado, to the stunning beaches of Hawaii, around the lakes of Northern Ontario and to the serenity of the Florida Keys. These were his favorite times, doing what he loved with the people that he loved.

Kenmore/Batavia - Mary Ellen Monachino, 92, of Kenmore and formerly of Batavia, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2019, at Kenmore Mercy Hospital.

Mary Ellen was born June 24, 1927, in Green Bay, WI, a daughter of the late William and Sophia (Haugen) McDonough.

Mary Ellen was a member of Resurrection Parish and a registered nurse at the former St. Jerome Hospital in Batavia.  She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Dennis Monachino of Beaver Island, MI, Cynthia Monachino of Kenmore, Julie Monachino of Kenmore, Patrick (Ann Marie) Monachino of Aldan, PA and Thomas (Daun) Monachino of Batavia; grandchildren, Crystal Fletcher, Mary Regina (Colson) Howard, Christopher (Ashley) Monachino,  Megan Monachino, Maria Monachino, Brian Monachino and Matthew Monachino; great-grandchildren, Brayden Howard and Mason Howard; a brother E. Anthony (Mardee) McDonough of Sydney, Australia; a sister, Charlotte (Richard) Sanderson of Ocala, FL and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Ellen is the wife of the late Patsy Monachino.

Virginia “Ginnie” Brewster, 69, of Batavia, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2019 at home surrounded by her loved ones.  She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Providence Di Fazio.

Virginia began her teaching career at St. Joseph’s School and then moved on to Oakfield Alabama Central School District where she taught for 32 years.  She also worked for B.O.C.E.S. for ten years as an enrichment teacher for Summer Institute.  After her retirement, Ginnie continued to substitute for thirteen years.  She loved interacting with children and looked forward to being among her colleagues.  In addition to teaching, Ginnie worked as a temporary group leader for a technology company in CT for a short period of time.

Ginnie is survived by her devoted husband of 47 years, John, two loving daughters, Karie (Steve) Kilner of Chili, Lorie (Albert) Perez of Chili and four cherished grandchildren:  Ryan and Alyssa Kilner and Gabriella and Ava Perez.  Also surviving are her sisters, Rosemarie (late Jerry) Acheson of Davenport, FL, Annette (Vincent) Gullo of Davenport FL, and Gloria (Steve) Enes of Rochester.  She was a sister- in-law to Jerome (LeAnn) Brewster of Attica, James (Deborah) Brewster of FL, and Janine (Paul) Cain of Pavilion.  Ginnie had thirteen nieces and nephews and eighteen great nieces and nephews.

Ginnie spent her lifetime committed to her family and friends.  Ginnie loved to travel with them, especially to warm places.  She also enjoyed baking cookies and pies for her family.  She was a volunteer for the bereavement committee and was a devout parishioner of Resurrection Parish.  She also served for a short time for All Babies Cherished. During the month of November, she devoted her time and energy in raising funds for Pancreatic Cancer Association of WNY.  With the help of her family and friends, over a period of ten years, she raised thousands of dollars.  Ginnie would often contact others who had cancer to offer positive support.

Batavia - Carl Meleca, age 91, of Batavia, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2019, at the New York State Veteran's Home.

Mr. Meleca was born June 7, 1928, in Calabria, Italy, a son of the late Joseph and late Maria Cristina Baggetta Meleca.

A longtime barber in Batavia, Mr. Meleca was a member of St. Joseph's Church and proudly served his country with the United States Army.

He is survived by his daughters; Karen (Rick) Fredrickson of Melbourne, Florida and Christina (Ben) Gammack of Attica; his grandchildren; Dominic and Isabella Lamitina; two brothers; S. Anthony (Terry) Meleca and C. Benjamin (Jeanne) Meleca, both of Columbus, Ohio his sister; Olga Meleca of LeRoy and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He is predeceased by his brother; Frank Meleca and his sisters; Frances Martino and Josephine Meleca.

  Michelle G. Buckenmeyer, 33, of Alexander passed away on September 28, 2019. She was born on July 3, 1986 in Batavia to Bernard Buckenmeyer Jr. and Marcia (Brown) Hirsch. Michelle is predeceased by her grandfather; Harold Brown.

Michelle graduated from Alexander High School in 2004. She was a lifelong dairy farmer, working on her family’s dairy farm in Alexander. She was an avid Red Sox fan, had a love for the outdoors and riding four wheelers. Michelle was full of life and always had a smile on her face. She had a way with animals, her dogs and cats, but especially the cows and calves she would always help if she could, no matter the time of day or how long it took.

Shell Bell will be irreplaceable at the farm and in our hearts and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

  Otis L. Thomas Jr., 57, of Maryland, formerly of Batavia, passed away on Saturday September 21, 2019 in Silver Spring, MD. He was born in Batavia on November 1, 1961 to the late Otis L. Thomas Sr. and Ruth (Hatcher) Stinson of Gates Chili. In addition to his father, Otis is predeceased his brother; Titus Stinson.

Otis will be remembered for his love for all who knew him, as he spread it abroad. Everyone could feel his love and his infectious smile could light up the room.  He was a loyal and caring man who enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially his children and grandchildren.

Tracy W. Matteson, 84, of Bennington, passed away on September 26, 2019 in Buffalo. Tracy was born in Varysburg, NY on December 14, 1934 to the late Jenison and the late Alice (Spink) Matteson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernadine (Romesser); siblings, Dick Spink, Shirley Wright, Thelma Reiter, Noel Matteson; and his granddaughters, Lillian Rose Irene Kilner and Sara Nicole Kilner.

Tracy was a Truck Driver for 25 years with WW Kimmons & Sons and then drove a car carrier for 30 years for various companies. In his younger years, Tracy worked at the Varysburg Garage. Tracy enjoyed his time with his family. His favorite moments were those spent with his grandchildren at the Twilight Meadows Restaurant in Attica, which was his favorite place to eat.

Tracy is survived by his children, Jeffery Matteson, David (Shelley) Matteson, and Laura (Eric) Holderle; siblings, Grant Matteson and Jenny Parmerter; grandchildren, Jeffery (Nicole) Matteson, Chris (Maegan) Matteson, Jessica Matteson, Marc (Heather) Matteson, Nicholas Kilner, Zachary Holderle, Victoria Kilner, Timothy Kilner, Maverick Kilner, and Baby Holderle who is expected in December; great grandchildren, Jacob, Chelsey, Easton, Peyton, and Luke Matteson.

  Charles Rogers, 50, of Darien Center passed away on Wednesday September 25, 2019 at his home. He was born in Buffalo on December 19, 1968 to the late Glenn Rogers and Patricia (Strimple) Rogers. In addition to his father, Charles is predeceased by his brother; Darrell Rogers.

Charles was a Correctional Officer at Wyoming Correctional Facility with 25 years of service. He loved riding motorcycles, hunting, and NASCAR. He was a loving husband, son, brother and uncle who was larger than life. Charles will be remembered for his unconditional love for this family, and those who weren’t but he still treated them as family.

He is survived by his loving wife; Nancy (Moore) Rogers; siblings Terry Rogers and Michael (Mary) Rogers; along with aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and his dog, Dolly.

Sally M. Shults, 87, of Batavia passed away on September 24, 2019 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on September 20, 1932 in Oakfield, the daughter of the late Hiram and Fannie (Casper) Sumeriski.

In addition to her parents, Sally is predeceased by her husband; Delton Shults; brothers Clarence, Floyd, Cedric, Edward and Donald; sisters Eloise Blackburn, Adaline Sulimowicz, Betty Sumeriski and Shirley Weber; son-in-law Matthew Burns and great-grandchilden Frank Raymond Ball and Addie Marie Burns.

Sally enjoyed traveling, going to the casino and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her daughters; Cynthia (Stephen) Hall, Cathy Burns and Cheryl (Robert) Ball; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren along with several nieces, nephews and her long time companion, Paul Nonnenberg.

James Waldron, 80, of Utica and Ocala, FL, passed away on Monday September 23, 2019 at Faxton St. Luke’s Hospital in New Hartford. He was born on August 7, 1939 in Batavia to the late Horace and Mary Catherine (Mckenna) Waldron. James is predeceased by his siblings; Fawn Coughlin, Loretta Bauer, Winifred Cook, Horace Waldron, Patrick Waldron, Dennis Waldron.

James was a United States Army Veteran. He worked at the Utica Psychiatric Center for 38 years. He will be remembered as a wonderful and loving brother and uncle.

He is survived by his siblings; Joyce Harezga, Benjamin Waldron, Christine Moore and Margaret Gilchrist; nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Marie B. Niles, age 82 of Silver Springs, NY formerly of Castile, passed away on Sunday September 22, 2019 at Highland Hospital in Rochester.  She was born in Buffalo, NY on March 19, 1937 a daughter to the late Arthur “Jack” and Dorothy (Radder) Cady.

She was a 1955 graduate of East High School in Buffalo. In her teens Marie was a camp counselor for Camp Fire Girls, after graduation she worked as a long-distance telephone operator for Bell Telephone Co. in downtown Buffalo. Marie worked as an inventory clerk for Fisher Price and Sears, but mostly worked in retail working for retailers Murphy’s 5 & 10, Grants, Sattler’s and Picture Island and retired from the former Champion Products Factory Outlet Store in Geneseo. A big part of her career was owning and operating Shado Lawn Dairy Farm in Delevan until 1976 and then Shado Lawn Strawberry Farm which later developed into Shado Lawn Farm Market in Castile with her late husband. In the fall the market became an attraction to many for the Pumpkin Tree they put together. After retirement she returned back to work working for Dollar Tree in Warsaw and for Letchworth State Park in camp contact.  Marie was a member of the NYS Federation of Home Bureau since 1971 in Machias, Gainesville and Perry. She enjoyed cake decorating, learning to do many crafts which she started but didn’t always finish, gardening, and especially enjoyed spending time with her family.

  Jackson R. “Jake” Lounsberry, 30, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Attica, NY. He was born on February 20, 1989 in King City, California to Kenneth and the late Cherylynn (Van Nostrand) Lounsberry.

Jake was a loving and devoted son, brother, nephew, cousin, friend and neighbor. He was a talented artist and musician. He could fix anything!!He loved to walk in the woods and enjoy nature. Jake was known for his sense of humor and his fun-loving personality. Jake enjoyed skateboarding, drawing, painting, playing guitar, concerts, kayaking, bonfires with friends, and gazing up at the night stars.  He touched many lives and was a caregiver to all. His legacy and kindness will live on and will forever be close to many hearts.

LeRoy- Henry R. Klein, 94, of LeRoy, longtime resident of Batavia, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2019, at United Memorial Medical Center.

Henry was born June 12, 1925, in Batavia, a son of the late John and Margaret Winling Klein.

He retired from the City of Batavia Fire Department after 30 years of service. For over 20 years, he ran a fire extinguisher sales and service business throughout the community. A life-long member of St. Joseph's Church, he was a member of the American Legion and a life member of the DAV. He and his wife were avid square-dancers who enjoyed camping. He proudly served his country with the United States Navy during World War II and stormed Omaha Beach during the D-Day Invasion in France.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Kelley Klein, whom he married January 17, 1953; his daughters; Christine (Charles) Kuehl of East Bethany and Barbara (Paul) Hart of San Antonio, Texas; his son; David Klein of Groveland, Florida; six granddaughters; Jennifer Nagelhout, Stacey (Kelly) Mileham, Melissa (Christopher) Lacey, Ruth (Roger) Rodriguez, Amy (George) DeRosa and  Paula (JR) Rodriguez; nine great-grandchildren; his sister; Veronica Miller; his sisters-in-law; Celia Klein and Daisy Klein, and several nieces and nephews. 

He is predeceased by his brothers; Donald, Joseph, Edward, Cornelius and Paul Klein and his sisters; Helen Zorn, Cecilia Zackey, Eileen Amedick, Margaret Radice, Henrietta Imbrecht and Regina Redivivo.

Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 28th at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main Street, Batavia where services will immediately follow visitation. Fr. Ivan Trujilio will be officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Henry's memory may be made to the activities fund at the New York State Veteran's Nursing Home, 220 Richmond Avenue, Batavia, New York 14020. JEANNE MARIE GRABER ~ Age 83, of Batavia, died peacefully Sunday September 22, 2019 at the United Memorial Medical Center. Jeanne was born March 20, 1936 in Niles, Ohio to the late Edward and Kathleen (Gratz) McConnell also preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Jean Graber and sister, Lynne Black.

Mrs. Graber was a member of Resurrection Parish (St. Mary’s) for many years, she held many civil service positions in the area and was a tireless advocate for youth sports. She was one of the original board members of GAHA (Genesee Amateur Hockey Association) and GASA (Genesee Amateur Soccer Association) as her children participated along with being a volunteer with both and Genesee Community Action as well.  

Surviving are her loving children, Gary Graber of Darien, Timothy (Lisa) Graber of Lockport, Jane Graber of Batavia, Donald (Lori) Graber of OH and Anthony (Jessica) Graber of NC along with 9 cherished grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren.
