CECELIA MARY SCHOFF

By Michael Tomaszewski

CECELIA MARY SCHOFF ~ Jan. 13, 1939 to April 1, 2020 went to heaven today. She is predeceased by her husband, Martin Henry Schoff.

She was a wonderful mother and wife. She enjoyed baking and cooking for her family. Her apple pie was the stuff of legends and dreams we will never taste again. Large family parties and picnics made her very happy. She loved seeing most of her 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. They were the joy of her life. Her life was difficult at times, but she always shone through like a beautiful bright star. We are saddened by the thought that we will never hear her singing around the house, will never see her beautiful face and smile again, will never look into her beautiful blue eyes, will never feel those soft arms around us, will never feel her short little self-tucked under our chins in a warm hug. Will never again hear that well-loved beautiful voice saying I love you. We often told her she was “The World’s Best Mom,” and it was so true. She was truly a sweet and wonderful lady. She had a gentle soul. She is finally free.

Cecelia is survived by her children, Martin Schoff (Diane), Bridget Schoff, Jennifer Schoff, Christopher Schoff and Isabella Poss. Her grandchildren Kelly Schoff, Major Lynda Doupe U.S. Army, Rhebeka Hyland, Nichole Hoffere, Garret Schoff, Matthew McAllister, Emily Gillespie, Kyle Schoff, Eric Schoff, Katie Schoff, Zachary Schoff, Christopher Schoff Jr., and 15 great-grandchildren. Cecelia is also survived by her remaining brothers and sisters. Of the original twelve there is Ethel Stephenson, Frank Howard, Dorthy Roth, Mary Patri and Larry Howard.

She will be sorely missed.

We love you Mom.

Our hearts are broken.

Goodbye Sweetheart.

GEORGE J. "SKIP" RICHARDSON

By Michael Tomaszewski

GEORGE J. “SKIP” RICHARDSON ~ Age 93, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2020 at the VA Upstate NY Healthcare System, Batavia, NY. He had resided there for two years among his fellow veterans, receiving the very best of care. Skip was born on February 26, 1927 in Minooka, PA, the youngest child of Mary Davin Richardson and Charles Richardson. His father, Charles, was killed in a coal mine accident just a few weeks before Skip was born.

Skip spent his childhood in eastern PA with his mother, grandmother and siblings. His mother then remarried, and the family moved to the Lackawanna, NY area. As a young man, Skip worked as a waiter at various restaurants and hotels in the area, including the famed Hotel Statler. (He later showed off his ability to carry several plates on one arm at home— until he dropped one of his wife’s good china!)

In his early twenties, Skip enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp, and traveled the world. He fought in the Korean Conflict, was seriously wounded, and was awarded the Purple Heart. Following his recovery and discharge, he returned to the Lackawanna area and began work at the Bethlehem Steel Corporation, where he remained until his retirement at age 55.

On September 15, 1956, Skip married the former Alice M. Schiedel. One condition of the wedding that Alice made was that there be square dancing - a real problem for Skip, since he and his friends were ‘city boys’. The dancing turned out to be the most fun the city slickers had in years, though; something country-girl Alice remembered throughout their 63 years of marriage.

Skip and Alice had three children, and when they were small, life revolved around work and raising a family. But Skip still found time to be involved in lots of other activities! He took his children (and lots of the neighbor kids, too) roller skating and ice skating; he repaired bicycles for just about everyone; he led a boy scout troop; and at age 40, he got on a “health kick” and started jogging.

It was the jogging that really “took off” for him. Transitioning from a quick mile or two around the playground, with the neighborhood kids tagging behind, to a marathon in Washington, D.C. with thousands of other Marines didn’t take Skip long at all! He ran an eight-minute mile or better right up through his seventies and participated in several marathons. The charity 10- and 5- K runs he competed in are too numerous to count.

Of course, running wasn’t Skip’s only passion. He was a member/volunteer, and in some cases an officer, of the following organizations: Crown Club (charter member); Steel City Hunting Club; ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out); Disabled American Veterans; Korean H1 Club; Buffalo Host Lion’s Club (twice recipient of Melvin Jones award); Blasdell and Big Tree Elementary Schools Senior Volunteers Program; Buffalo News seller for Kids’ Day to benefit Children’s Hospital (many years); Independent Living Center; Buffalo Philharmonic Running Club; Five Gallon Blood Donor for the Red Cross.

Skip is survived by his devoted wife, Alice; his three loving children, Margaret (Patrick), George B., and Paul; his three cherished grandchildren, Colleen (Stan), Maureen, and Kathleen, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and godchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, his stepfather, his six brothers and sisters, and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Buffalo Host Lions Club, Children’s Hospital, or any of the many wonderful organizations that Skip so faithfully served.

Please share your words of comfort with George’s family at www.tomaszewskifh.com

With the current health situation in our country, a memorial gathering for Skip will take place later.

John Patrick (Pat) Detine

By T.J. Woodward

John Patrick (Pat) Detine, age 88, of Batavia passed away on Sunday April 5, 2020 at his home, under the constant care of his loving wife. He was a son of the late Nellie M. (McGee) Detine, and the late John C. Detine.

When a young boy the family moved from hometown Canandaigua to Buffalo during the city’s industrial heyday. After graduating from South Park High, he joined the Air Force and achieved the rank of Airman 1st Class, serving as a cryptographer during the Korean War. Discharged honorably in 1952, Pat returned to Buffalo. There he met his future wife, Gertrude Krantz, settled down and started a family. Pat worked 38 years as Operations Manager for Calibrated Charts in Batavia. Though not college educated, he possessed an engineer’s knowhow, tackling problems by patient tinkering and experimentation. He mentored many employees, and regarded all as family. He joined the Jaycees, and later became a member of BPOE (Elks) local 950. Pat played League Softball and relished Elks picnics, parties, and bingo, and served as the club’s Sergeant at Arms. A fondness for sport grew early in him and he carried it through his life by playing golf and coaching Little League baseball. When receiving one of his lessons, a student was apt to hear him shout “Pay Attention”! He prized competition but put good sportsmanship first.

He loved history and devoured books on World War II and the American Civil War. After retiring from Calibrated he toured Civil War battle grounds and grew in his appreciation for the sacrifices made by men and women in arms. He was a fierce patriot, and cherished the brotherhood of service. Pat was an ardent Bills fan, and rooted against the Evil Empire (a.k.a., New York Yankees) as devoutly as he cheered his favored Mets or Tigers.
