Obituaries

  Beverly B. Mancuso, 95, of Batavia passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday March 29, 2022. She was born on December 5, 1926 in Portage, New York to the late Ivan and Harriet (Barnes) Boss. In addition to her parents, Beverly is predeceased by her husband; Joseph L. Mancuso.

Mom was a lifelong lover of horses. Her happiest days as a child were when she would take off on her horse early in the morning and ride all day. She called herself a true wanderer at heart (something that Dad sparked). Beverly’s first 8 years of school were in a one-room schoolhouse. She was in 4-H, was a majorette with the Attica Concert Band. Beverly held many jobs, she was a waitress, bank teller (had to stop working at the bank when she got pregnant since women could not be seen pregnant in the workplace!), a receptionist at St. Joseph's Parish, sold uniforms for St Joseph's School, worked at St. Jerome Hospital, Hans Moeller’s Jewelers, Darien Lake and absolutely without a doubt enabled Dad to create the world's first business incubator by keeping everything together at home (domestic engineer), as well as helping at the Batavia Industrial Center by operating the switchboard and being the receptionist and secretary.

She is survived by her children; William J. (Melissa) Mancuso of OH., Beverly Mancuso of Batavia, B. Thomas (Jinny) Mancuso of Batavia, Robert L. (Sandra) Mancuso of Batavia and Anthony I. (Cathy) Mancuso of Elba; brother Ivan P. Boss of Attica and Donald (Sue) Boss of TN; 5 grandchildren Joseph, Jordan, Jenna, Isabella and Carmen Mancuso, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. A special thank you to Sandy Maniace, for being Mom’s caring companion and friend, a true gift from God.

Mom loved spending time with her family, and always enjoyed attending any and all events involving her beloved grandchildren.  There are countless stories and wonderful memories for all of us to carry forward in loving memory of this most amazing Mother, Friend, Grandmother, Aunt.  A strong woman who lived her life with honor, kindness and class, Mom will be greatly missed.

There will be no prior calling hours. Funeral Services will be held privately for the family. Mrs. Mancuso will be laid to rest in the St. Joseph’s Mausoleum.

Oakfield- Yvonne M. Beverly, 74 of Oakfield passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 24, 2022 at home surrounded by her family. She was born April 7, 1947 in Batavia, New York to the late Joseph Cardinali and Jennie (Galline) Nesbitt. Yvonne is predeceased by her parents and her favorite dog Dakota.
 
Yvonne loved fiercely and was everyone’s “Nana”.  She was a dedicated wife and mother who gave selflessly.  She enjoyed spending time with her family & friends and was proud of her children and grandchildren.  Everyone who met her loved her heart, her wit and her sassiness.  She was an amazing cook and the kitchen was the heart of her home.  The door was always open for anyone who entered.    
 
Yvonne is survived by her husband of 55 years, James Beverly and four children, Richard (Mary) Turi, Christine (Kevin) Fischer, Kerry (David) Beitz, and Kelly (Benjamin) Whitmore. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Brian (Teresa) Fischer, Bradley (Jennifer) Fischer, Jennie (Steven) Hawkins, Ashley Jenks, Evan and Natalie Whitmore and great-grandchildren, Lauryn, Camden and Kinsley Hawkins, Jackson and Ellery Fischer, as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins. Yvonne is survived by her brothers, Joseph (Sonny) and Sharon Cardinali and James Cardinali.

Yvonne’s Memorial Service will immediately follow visitation at 12 noon with Rev. Marty MacDonald officiating. Burial will follow in Cary Cemetery in Oakfield. Dolores M. (Oley) Java, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2022 at age 79. Dolores was born and raised in the Buffalo area, and lived in Lancaster before moving to Corfu to raise her family. She was the loving wife of James Java Sr. for 54 years, and the mother of James Java Jr. (Kara Bren), and Joelle (Marty) Mendola. She was the daughter of Edward Oley and Emily (Napieralski) Oley, the sister of Joanne Turner and Judy (Richard) Schanz, the grandmother "Beamie" of Xavier and Marek Mendola, and the sister-in-law of John (Donna) Java Jr. and Joel and Carol Java. Her devotion to her husband, children, and grandchildren, to her parents and her sisters, to many other close family members and cherished friends, and to her church, were her life. Those of us she leaves behind will never forget her as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and as a kind and thoughtful sister and friend; with humor and a beautiful smile, she truly made a house a home. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Maximilian Kolbe Roman Catholic Church, 8656 Church Street, East Pembroke at 11 AM on Friday, April 8, 2022. Paul R. Raines, Sr., 93, of Alexander, passed away on March 23, 2022.

Paul was born September 21, 1928 in Darien, the son of the late Harry and Kathryn (Klossner) Raines.

Paul was the founder of P & D Equipment, Sales and Service in Alexander, which he operated with his seven children.  Prior to P & D Equipment, Sales and Service, he worked at Buckenmeyer Brothers Dairy Farm and sold real estate for United Farm Agency.  Paul was a member of West Bethany Baptist Church and a lifetime member of the Alexander Fire Department.  He was an avid hunter, who loved entertaining and will be remembered for his dancing, singing and sense of humor.  Paul graduated from Alexander Central School in 1946.

Surviving are his children, Dennis G. (Barb Phillips) Raines of Batavia, Renee M. (Robert) Smith of Batavia, Kevin M. (Darlene) Raines of Alexander, Eric C. Raines, Sr. of Alexander and Brian J. (Michelle) Raines of Bethany; daughter-in-law, Michele Raines of Lyndonville, 23 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Paul is the husband of the late Catherine Raines, who passed away on January 1, 2016.  Also preceded in death by his sons, Paul R. Raines, Jr. and Mark W. Raines and his sister, Irene Sundberg.

Mary E. Stuckey, 62 of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Friday (March 25, 2022) at United Memorial Medical Center.

She was born February 19, 1960 in Vero beach, Florida, a daughter of the late Donald and Betty Dickens Morrow.

Survivors include her siblings, Anita (Roger) Weiss, Donna Whitehead, Joann Chissom, Patricia Morrow, Donald Morrow and Eugene Morrow. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Byron - Joseph Kuzma, born in Buffalo, N Y. July 13, 1946 to Henry and Helen (Wachowiak) Kuzma. He was an Air Force veteran who served during the Vietnam War; stationed in Japan. He attended the University Of Buffalo for his undergraduate studies and graduated from the University of Toledo, Ohio Pharmacy School. Following graduation, he worked in pharmacies in Toledo and Sandusky, Ohio. In 1976, he returned to Western New York to work in the V.A   pharmacy in Batavia. Joseph also worked at the V.A. pharmacies in Canandaigua and Rochester. He retired from the VA in 2003.

He is survived by his wife Rita ( Kowalczyk ) Kuzma whom he married on August 8 1970 and his son Joseph Jonathan.  Joseph is predeceased by his father, mother, brother Henry, sister Theresa, and  daughter Jennifer. Also surviving are nieces and nephews.

Joseph enjoyed golf and traveling. His travels took him to Europe, South America, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Batavia - Geraldine Thompson, 95, of Batavia passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2022 at Premier Genesee Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Mrs. Thompson was born Tuesday, February 15th, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan a daughter of the late Henry and Katherine.

Geraldine is the wife of Gerald A. Thompson who passed away on May 2, 2014.

She is survived by her children, Richard (Judy) Thompson of Detroit, Michigan, Joanne Venema and Peggy Walden, both of Corfu; five grandchildren, David "Chip" Walden, Craig Walden, Andrea Thomas, Amanda Williams and Amy (Brandon) Seliger; seven great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

There are no prior visiting hours. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Harold Strachan Gouinlock, 93 of Alexander, passed away March 24^th, 2022 at the Edna Tina Wilson Living Center in Rochester where he had resided since August of 2021. 

He was born in Batavia, New York March 13^th, 1929, the son of the late Harold and Marie Lindsey Gouinlock.  He graduated from Batavia High School in 1947.  From there he attended Cornell University where he majored in engineering. 

He then joined the Army and went overseas to fight at the front lines in the Korean War.  He rose to the rank of sergeant and was proud to become a member of the Military Police Corps during the war. 

After the war he returned to Batavia to work at the Climax Corporation, a family-owned business that manufactured the well known Bidwell Bean Thrasher.  There he was involved with engineering and testing new equipment.  Additionally he was an officer of the corporation, eventually assuming the role of President in the late 1960's. 

In the 1970's he worked at C&H Welding Supply in Batavia and eventually got back into engineering at Trojan Industries in Batavia. He worked in Trojan's engineering department for many years before retirement in 1990. 

Known as Bob by some, Gunner by others, he was well known for his love of motorcycles, guitar playing, and gun collecting.  He found great enjoyment fixing and creating mechanical things, and was always happy to help someone with an interesting mathematical or engineering question. 

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife, Ann Embury Gouinlock who passed away in 2014, and his sister Dorothy Gouinlock Booher. 

He is survived by his sons, Robert (Rebecca) Gouinlock of Attica and Richard (Kevin Iacovelli) of Queens New York, his grandchildren Elizabeth and William Gouinlock, along with many nieces and nephews. 

There will be no calling hours.  A private family celebration of life will be planned for a future date.

  Veronica M.L. (Schum) Frost of Attica, NY peacefully passed away surrounded by her beloved husband and family on Wednesday, March 23, at Roswell Park Intensive Care Unit, Buffalo, NY, at the age of 67.  Born August 5, 1954, she was the daughter of Robert and Loretta Kriger Schum.   

Veronica was a 1972 graduate of Attica Central High School, earned an Associates degree from Genesee Community College, and went on to earn a  Bachelors degree in Psychology from the University of Buffalo in 1976.  She began her career as a tutor at SUNY Fredonia, also teaching at Holy Trinity School in Dunkirk. She returned to Western New York in 1978 to accept a Teachers’ Aide position at BOCES, now Genesee Valley Educational Partnership.  She joined the Genesee County Job Development Department in 1984 as an employment and training counselor.  In 1988, she was promoted to senior employment and training counselor, a position she held until her retirement on December 19, 2019. During that time, she was instrumental in developing the YWCA “Power Up” program to help women develop job skills.  She also developed and taught several workshops for the Dept. of Social Services to help participants become self-sufficient, and she was recognized for exceeding program goals by 100%.  She started a monthly newsletter for the agency’s participants and led the Customer Service and Sales Training Center of WNY.  Veronica was part of the team that first developed the Regional Action Phone (RAP) and was its director for several years.

Veronica was an active member of Ss. Joachim and Anne Parish, Attica, NY, as a church lector and Eucharistic minister.  She loved being a part of the Faith Formation team, preparing children to receive their sacraments.  Veronica loved arts and crafts, visiting local farmer’s markets, but her biggest joy came from traveling with her husband and being with her family. 

She will be greatly missed by her husband of 35 years, Robert L. Frost; sister Catherine T.(George) Uhly, and brother Thomas R. Schum, nieces and nephews Katrina Uhly (Christian Carydis), Laura Uhly (John Swinton), Diana (Brett) Shirley, William (Ann) Schoenrock, Sharon (Jay) Anderson, Elisa Frost, Geoffrey Frost, Loni (Will) Orlet, Patty (Gene) Naujock, and Ernie Nelson;  many grand-nieces and nephews, as well as her beloved friends.

Arthur Richard (Dick) Franz, Age 91 went to be with the Lord peacefully at his home on March 19, 2022. He was Born on December 1,1930 in Buffalo, NY to Ethel Beanard and A. Richard Franz Sr.

Along with his Parents, He is preceded in death by his sister, Jane (Mac) Mackenzie, In laws, Helen (Hoak) Russell W. Porter, Sister-in-Law, Maryanne Porter, Daughter, Sharon Leslie Marie Franz, Son, William Richard (Susan) Franz, Grandson’s Adam Michael Franz and Jaxon Martin McGee.

He leaves behind his High School Sweetheart, Loving, Adoring and Devoted wife of 70 years, Joanne Leatrice Porter Franz. Three blessed children, Gretchen (Jeffrey) Harmon, Russell (AnnMarie) Franz and Katrina (Steven) Spring. 11 Grandchildren, Amy (John) McGee, William (Emily) Franz Jr., Jessica Franz, Carrie (Jeffrey) Stann, Pamela (Jeromy) Fincher, Jordan Franz, Connor Franz, Randall (Kristen) Spring, Katelynn (Christopher) Smith and Kristina (Mark) George Jr. 34 Great Grand Children and 1 Great-Great Grand Daughter. Sister-in-law Linda (Raymond) Braun, many cousins, nieces and nephews and very dear lifelong friends.

Richard served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War and was a very proud Veteran.

Richard attended Amherst CSD, GCC, SUNY Brockport and Canton University to earn his degree and retired in 1995 from the Batavia City School District as the Schools Psychologist. A position he held with extreme devotion to the students he worked with every day.

Dick and Jo together were members of the Victims Assistance Program in Genesee County as they helped many families with their grief and loss of their loved ones. He also served on the Genesee County Conditional Release Program and served on the Town of Darien Tax Review Board.

Dick and Jo made their home in Darien for the past 65 years. Richard enjoyed life and brought so much joy to so many. His infectious smile, humor, gentleness, compassion, and love was very deep and most sincere. He always found his way into people’s hearts.

The family wishes to express a special thanks for the care and love shown by the staff at Johnny’s Angels for the past few years. Dr. Mary Obear and her staff for the kindness and care to assistance in his journey. Jeromy Fincher, (Grandson in law) for his devotion, dedication, and care for Dad.

Private service will be held for immediate family only.

Batavia - Gerald A. Erion, 81 of Batavia passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home.

Mr. Erion was born Saturday, March 30th, 1940 in Buffalo, New York a son of the late Marvin Erion and Dorothy Herdle Erion.

A 1960 graduate of Riverside High School in Buffalo, he graduated from the University of Buffalo in 1964 with his Bachelor’s Degree and from Syracuse University in 1969 with his Master’s Degree in Social Work. Mr. Erion worked at Loblaws Supermarket in Buffalo as a stock boy while he put himself through college. He worked as the Director of Inpatient and Residential Services for ADDS in Buffalo for many years. Prior to his position at ADDS, he worked as a social worker for the Erie County Department of Social Services and at the Batavia VA Medical Center as a counselor.  A member of Saint Padre Pio Roman Catholic Church, he was an active volunteer serving as an usher, counter, Sunday school teacher and on the church finance committee. A board member of the Elba Central School District for eight years, he served one term as president of the board. He served as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader in Elba and was a member of the Elba Rotary Club. A sponsor for The Fresh Air Fund, a program he was active with, he was a volunteer with the State Decision Making Committee and served on the Genesee County Airport Advisory Committee.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Janice C. Borucki Erion of Batavia; his sons, Dr. Gerald J. (Bridget A.) Erion of Buffalo and Christopher M. (Hanna E.) Erion of Byron; four grandchildren, Grayson O. Erion, Annabelle R. Erion, Colton C. Erion and Katherine E. Erion, all of Byron; his sister-in-law, Marion Erion of West Seneca; his brother-in-law, Paul Willis of North Collins and nieces and nephews. 

He is predeceased by his brother, Marvin Erion and his sister, Ruth Willis.

John Francis Fay, known as Jack, a devoted father, grandfather, and great grandfather from LeRoy, NY, passed away on March 20, 2022 at the age of 95.

     He was born March 11, 1927, to the late John and Eva Brown Fay.

   

  Jack was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. His career was spent working for the New York State Harness Racing Association. He was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Mercy Parish as well as a member of the Oatka Fish and Game Club and the American Legion.   

     Jack is predeceased by his wife, Jean Fay, and his grandson, Michael Paladino.

     He is survived by his daughters, Barbara Fay (Ron Almeter), Nancy Elmore (David), Jacalyn Whiting (Reid), Mary Jo Fay and Carol DiFrancisco, stepsons Thomas Piccioli, Johnny Piccioli (Debbie), Steven Piccioli (Lu), his beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren, and his dear friend, Eileen Tomidy. 

     He was a man who cherished his family above all else.  It was through grace that he was allowed to spend so many incredible years with us.  We will miss his wonderful presence every day and we are so grateful for the time we had with him.

Oakfield - Margaret S. Macioszek, 83 of Oakfield, passed away on Monday, (March 21, 2022) at her home.

Mrs. Macioszek was born January 19, 1939 in Buffalo, a daughter of the late Thomas and Gerda (Meyers) Martin.

Margaret enjoyed bird watching, working crossword puzzles, crime shows, and the cooking channel. In her younger years she enjoyed fishing, and gardening.

Margaret is the wife of the late Patrick M. Macioszek who passed away in 1986.

Surviving are her children, Ronda (William, Sr.) Semar of Oakfield, and Martin Macioszek, I of Oakfield; grandchildren, William (Sarah) Semar, Jr., Russell (Emily) Semar, Cassandra Semar, Martin Macioszek, II, and Michael Macioszek; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Gerald (late Alice) Martin; sisters, Barbara (late Donald) Endres, Patricia Phillips, and Kathleen Herman. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

She is preceded in death by her brothers, Thomas (late Joann) Martin, and Ronald (late Janet) Martin; sisters, Gerda (late David) Watts, and Donna (late Robert) Beyer.

Marie Ethel Spiotta passed peacefully surrounded by family at her home on March 21, 2022 at the age of 77. She was born on April 18, 1944 in Batavia to the late Alvin and Ruth (McClurg) Baubie. In addition to her parents, Marie is predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Michael Rich; husband, Frank Spiotta, Sr.; and niece Kristi Marie Luthart.  

Marie was a loving mother and grandmother, and a friend to many. She enjoyed cooking for her large family and many friends, where her sauce, salad dressing, and clams casino were, and always will be, renowned family recipes. Marie enjoyed a long career as a hairdresser, where she met most of her lifelong friends.

All things nature brought Marie joy and she could often be found gardening or tending to the wildlife – especially the birds. Her cat, Kitty, was a faithful friend that could often cheer Marie up with her fetching antics.

Marie is survived by her three sons, Frank (Sue) Spiotta of Alexander, Anthony Spiotta of Oakfield, and Timothy (Sue) Spiotta of Oakfield, as well as her grandchildren, Erin Coles, Nicole (Ed) Reid, Courtney (Aaron) Way, Lydia Spiotta, Ariel Spiotta, Jewelean Spiotta, Haley Spiotta, and Hunter Spiotta, as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is also survived by her sisters Patti Baubie, Linda (Butch) Luthart, and Joyce (late James) Stevens, as well as her dear nieces Debbie and Callie Lawrence.

Family and friends are invited to call on Monday (March 28th) from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Ave. in Oakfield, where services will be held at 6:30 p.m. also on Monday.

Anna S. (Harris) Wheaton, 66, of Batavia passed away on the morning of March 21, 2022 at her home with her family by her side. She was born on July 21, 1955 in Batavia, the daughter of the late Lawrence and Shirley (Conway) Harris. In addition to her parents, Anna is also predeceased by her son in law; Reynold Hewitt-Anderson; brother in law Robert Gormley.

Anna was a hard working woman who loved her family. She obtained her GED and her LPN License and worked as a nurse in several area nursing homes until injuries forced her to stop nursing. She then went back to school to become a truck driver and traveled the highways and byways of America with her husband Charles. When a shoulder injury forced her off the road, she went back to nursing, working in a doctor’s office until her health finally sidelined her.

She spent a lot of her time with her children and grandchildren entertaining them with movies, Nerf gun wars, games and most importantly, her love. She was a passionate player of Mexican Dominos. Anna treated winning or losing with the same verve.

Anna is survived by her husband of 21 years; Charles Wheaton; children Amy (Jeremy) Szulewski, Melissa Anderson and Christopher Anderson-Hewitt; stepsons Ricki (Kerry) Wheaton and Thomas (Amanda) Wheaton; brothers Roddy (Merrie) Harris, Richard (Lee) Harris; sisters Robin (Patrick) Krebs, Sandy Gormley; along with 12 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and too many cousins to count that will also sorely miss her.

There will be no prior calling hours or Services per her wishes. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date.
