Batavia - Rev. Douglas A. Knorr, 68 of Batavia, passed away on Friday, (April 8, 2022) at his home in Batavia.

Rev. Knorr was born July 25, 1953 in Rochester, a son of the late Arlene (late Albert) Knorr Keys.

Doug was a veteran of the US Army and was very proud to have become an ordained minister in 2018. Enjoyed grilling and was an avid Buffalo Sabres and Bills fan. He adored his cats and could often be found passing time playing his PlayStation.

Surviving are his daughters, Bethann (Michael) Mogenhan of Brockport, and Louise Whitlock of Maryland; his grandson, Jonathon Mogenhan; and family friend, Denise Osswald.

Services are being planned for late July 2022 and will be announced.  Burial will be in Western New York National Cemetery in Pembroke.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a veterans' charity of the donor's choice.

Batavia – Loren F. Balduf “Tookie”, age 98, passed away on Tuesday, April 13, 2022 at his home surrounded by his loving family under the care of HomeCare & Hospice.

He was born on January 6, 1924 in Batavia, a son of the late William Balduf and Helen Sharick Balduf.

A World War II Merchant Marines Veteran, he served aboard the USS Joseph Hewes and then on the USS Point Cabrillo. Loren drove school bus for many area schools and organizations including the St Joe’s Drum Corp and retired after 20 years with Oakfield-Alabama School as head mechanic. He volunteered for many years at the East Bethany and LeRoy Senior Meal Sites and loved going to local auctions where he earned the nickname “Dollar Bill Loren”. He enjoyed gardening, carpentry, working on cars, fishing and the annual trips to Black Lake. In the last years of his life Loren was cared for by his daughter Donna; granddaughter Amy and great-granddaughter Chelsea Stiles and her boyfriend Rob Drake.

He is predeceased by his wives, Dorothy Geise Balduf, who passed away on May 25, 1991, Myrtle F. Saar Balduf who passed away on September 11, 2005 and Betty Sinclair Balduf who passed away on August 22, 2021.

He is survived by his children, David (Patricia) Balduf of Greenville, South Carolina and Donna (late Lowry “Larry”) Stiles of Batavia; eleven grandchildren, Christopher (Karen) Balduf, Tiger (Mabel) Balduf, Jennifer (Steve) Thexton, Kevin (Kris) Brinkman, Brian (Danielle) Brinkman, Nicholas (Danyelle) Brinkman, Debora (Joel) Pocock, Amy Stiles, Stacey (Kris) Crossett, Charles (Erin) Stiles and Betsy (Tim) Abdella; 24 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including Jan Comstock and honorary family member, Ron DeFazio.

He is predeceased by his daughter, Elaine (late Carl) Brinkman and his siblings, Durward Balduf, Everett Balduf and Marie Comstock-Johnson.

Friends may call on Monday from 4 to 7 pm at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia where services and military honors will be held at 11 am Tuesday. He will be laid to rest in St. Vincent’s Cemetery, Attica.   Doris M. (Reding) Schiller, 94, is rejoicing with her Lord and Savior as of April 13, 2022. Born January 17, 1928 to the late Edward and Florence (Hoerbelt) Reding. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Norman C. Schiller; daughter, Mary E. (late Larry A.) Diehl and son, John J. Schiller.

She is survived by her daughters, Ellen (Steve) Schmidt; Jeanne (Earl) Seeley; son, Thomas (Adrienne) Schiller; grandchildren, Larry (Jill) Diehl II, Tracy Robbins, Stephen (Allison) and Matthew Schmidt, Miranda, Jennamarie and Nathan Schiller; great grandchildren, Kelsey (Cody) Burke, Joshua Diehl and Wolfgang Schmidt; great-great grandchildren, Owen and Mazie Burke; and special friend Judy Sawyer.

Doris was an avid reader, especially the Bible and enjoyed sewing clothes for her family and baking; cream puffs were her specialty. She loved her dogs and cats.

Diane vonBergen Frawley of Clifton Park, NY, passed away April 8, 2022, at Delmar Center for Rehab and Nursing in Delmar, NY. Diane was born June 30, 1955, in Callicoon, NY, and is the daughter of Richard and Shirley vonBergen of Byron, NY.

She graduated from Byron-Bergen High School in 1973 and Oswego State in 1977. Diane worked at the New York State Credit Union Association in Albany. 

Diane is survived by Robert Frawley, her husband of 43 years, son Joseph Frawley, of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, daughter Pamela (Jason) Rathbun, of Waterford, NY, brother Daniel vonBergen (Cathie), sister Sherri (Paul) Nilsen, and her parents.

After retiring, Diane and Bob spent part of the year at the Villages in Florida where they own a home. Many happy hours were spent on the golf courses with friends. Diane enjoyed trying new recipes, reading, exercise, and her family. She will be greatly missed by her family and those who knew her well.

  Ethyl I. Sojda, age 84, of Creek Rd, Batavia, NY, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on April 8th, 2022. Ethyl was born in Batavia as the only daughter of the late Vincent N. and Ruth M. Kirch.  She was a life-long resident of Alexander, NY.

After graduating from Alexander Central School, she held various jobs until she married her late husband, John F. Sojda, Jr. in 1961 and raised three children.  As a dedicated mother she could be seen braving any weather to watch her children’s sporting events.  She returned to work in 1977 and held a number of positions with local companies over the following thirty years.  In her last role she was a Loose Ends hostess managing the GCC cafeteria where many folks came to enjoy her kind and pleasant personality and her dedicated work ethic.

Though a long-time crocheter, later in life she became a serious quilter and active in the Batavia Museum Quilt Guild.  She produced a number of quilts for family and friends that are still enjoyed daily.

For a number of years, she was also a volunteer with All Babies Cherished.  It was not uncommon to see her with her knitting material creating baby hats for the regional hospital system. For many years she was an assistant to John Sojda, Jr. in his role as Alexander Town Justice.  Part of her charm and grace was how resiliently and quietly she met life’s challenges—both her own and those of others who knew her.

Ethyl is survived by her sons John and Steve (Barb), her daughter Ann, five grandchildren; Lily Whisman, Jacob (Paige), Stephanie (Patrick) Guarino, Michelle (Andrew) James , and Angela (Martin) Pohl,  great-grandchildren; Ezekiel Guarino, Emily and Eli James, Alex, and Maria Pohl.  She was preceded by her brother Merlin Kirch and has 4 surviving brothers (Ralph, Arnold, Harold, and Myron), and many nieces and nephews.

Amy Houseknecht Ramadan, of Wilson, North Carolina, formerly of Batavia, New York

On March 30th, 2022, Amy took her last breath after bravely and courageously fighting breast cancer for more than 5 years.

Loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, and a great friend to many, Amy owned Mama Mia’s restaurant in Wilson, North Carolina with her husband and brother-in-law. Amy loved being a mother more than anything else, she was an excellent cook, and her passion was baking. She had plans to open her own bakery and to publish a cookbook. She enjoyed baking cakes for friends and family, reading, trips to the beach, traveling, coffee dates with friends, and anything related to sea turtles. To know her was to love her, and Amy’s final gift was the gift of sight- through organ donation, she was able to help two other people.

Amy is pre-deceased by grandparents Joshua and Ruth Houseknecht, Ronald Charles, and great aunt June Wolcott who was a third grandma to the Houseknecht girls.

Amy is survived by her parents Robert and Pamela Houseknecht, grandmother Gloria Charles, sisters Katie Ferguson and Jenna (Ben) Cossitt, loving husband of 20 years Hosam Ramadan, and two amazing sons, Adam and Zacheria Ramadan, mother-in-law Ekram Ramadan, brother-in-law Ahmad (Taiseer) Ramadan, nieces Eliana Cossitt and Malak Ramadan, nephew Yassin Ramadan, and many close friends in Batavia and Wilson.

A Celebration of Life will be held on April 30th, 2022 at Akron First United Methodist Church, 7 Church St, Akron, NY 14001, at 12 p.m. Please wear a bright color to honor Amy’s colorful spirit.

Richard K. Snell, Sr., 64 of Byron, passed away suddenly on Monday (April 11, 2022) at Strong Memorial Hospital.

He was born September 20, 1957 in Rochester, NY, a son of the late Walter and Jane Wheeler Snell.

Richard was formerly employed by K & W Manufacturing in Bergen. He was a hard worker who enjoyed spending time with his family. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, campfires, cooking and eating home cooked meals. He will be dearly missed by his family and all who knew him.

Survivors include a daughter, Teresa (Eric Harter) Snell of LeRoy. Sons, Richard Snell Jr. of Holley, Shane (Angeline) Snell of Pavilion and Walter Snell of Byron. Sister, Janet (Dave) Montante of Rochester. Grandchildren, William Gorton, Jason Gorton, John Gorton, Brandyn Snell, Devin Graham, Silas Snell, Levi Snell, Kendra Snell and Joselyn Snell. Great-grandchildren, Gabriella Gorton and Skylar Snell. Former spouse and friend, Sandra Westbrook.

He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Snell and great-granddaughter, Zoey Gorton.

  Frank Riganotti, 86, of Batavia passed away after a long battle with dementia on Tuesday April 12, 2022. He was born in Sicily on February 13, 1936 to the late Dominico and Nicolina (Barone) Riganotti. In addition to his parents, Frank is predeceased by his wife: Annette (DiPiazza) Riganotti and twin granddaughters Cara and Cristine Fazio.

He is survived by his daughter; Nickie (Jim) Fazio of Batavia, daughter Maria Zaranek of Alden, son Dominic Riganotti of Florida; sibling Maria D’Anna of Sicily; grandchildren James and Ryan Fazio, Collin and Caitlyn Zaranek, along with many nieces and nephews.

Before his retirement, Frank was employed at Soccio and DellaPenna in Batavia as a construction worker, where he worked for 15 years. In his spare time he was an avid gardener and loved making his own wine. He also loved spending time with his family and friends, and most of all his beloved grandchildren. He loved spending time outside working in his garden, taking care of his fruit trees, grape vines, and his lawn. He also loved going to the casino with his friends and family.

There will be no prior calling hours. A 9:30AM Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday April 19, 2022 at Resurrection Parish 18 Ellicott St. Batavia, NY 14020 (formerly St. Mary’s Church). Entombment will be at St. Joseph’s Mausoleum following the Mass.

Norma Jane (Martin) Mitchell was born in Batavia, NY, on July 18, 1935 to Helen Marie (Moore) Martin and Nelson Purdy Martin, the youngest of three sisters. Norma graduated from Batavia High School in 1953. After completing a post graduate business course, Norma went on to being a cub reporter for the Batavia Daily News, Teen Director at the YWCA, and teletype operator for Western Union.

In 1956, while working at Western Union, Norma met Kenneth Mitchell, a recent Air Force veteran maintaining teletypes for the company. The two married on August 29, 1959, in Batavia and settled briefly in Amsterdam, NY. After Ken completed studies at Albany State Teachers College, he accepted a position as a social studies teacher in the Seneca Falls Central School District and the couple settled in Seneca Falls in the fall of 1960 where they remained to raise three children.

Norma was a member of many area groups, including the Red Jacket Fire Department Auxiliary, the Methodist Church, the Ruth and Naomi Circles, the Council of Churches, the local Girl Scouts, Seneca Community Players, Seneca Singers, Seneca Falls Historical Society, the Senior Follies, Trinity Episcopal Church, and local church choirs. As her children grew older, she worked outside the home, including as office secretary at the Methodist Church and in-home care aide, but she spent most of her time volunteering. Norma loved music, was an accomplished pianist, and claimed she could remember every song she ever heard.

During the last four years she suffered a series of health issues before going home to Heaven on January 5, 2022. She will be so greatly missed by her loving family and all the many friends she made over the years. She will be remembered as a positive, loving, and softspoken person who wasn’t afraid to share her thoughts and the joy of music wherever she went. Norma was pre- deceased by her parents and her two sisters, Naomi and Barbara. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; children, Catherine Marcuccilli of Pittsford, Steve (Jennifer) Mitchell of
Geneva, and Ellen (Steve) Stevenson of Edmond, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Kaylynn Jemison, Jared and Lauren Marcuccilli, and Alexa, Jazmyne and Airiana Mitchell; as well as many cousins,
nieces, nephews and extended family.

A celebration of Norma’s life will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 27 Fall Street, Seneca Falls, on Saturday, April 23 at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow the service at the Gould Hotel (108 Fall
Street). The family requests those attending wear a mask. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the charity of your choice. Special to Norma’s heart were her two churches,

LeRoy ~ Marty Robert Oliver, age 63, of Myrtle St, passed away unexpectedly early Sunday morning, (April 10th, 2022), at home.

    

He was born on September 30th, 1958 in Batavia, NY, a son of the late Kenneth Oliver and Beverly Pangrazio.

     Marty will be greatly missed by family and friends. Survived by his sons, Ryan Oliver of LeRoy,  Jordan (Kristi) Oliver of LeRoy and his two grandsons, that put the sparkle in his eyes, Joseph and Leo. Also survived by his siblings, Tim Oliver of North Carolina, Ron Schutt of Rochester, Lisa Schutt of LeRoy, many loved ones in Ohio, his canine companion, Willie, along with many nieces and nephews.

     Marty will be remembered as a great friend, who would stop anything to help anyone and have that friendly conversation. Marty was always happy, kind to everyone and a genuine, generous soul.  He was a carpenter, a collector of many and a dedicated Yankees and Giant fan.

Harold “Harley” Harloff reunited with his wife in Heaven on Thursday, April  7, 2022.  He had celebrated his 97th birthday on March 1st with his family at his adopted home - Village Green Nursing Facility in LeRoy.

Harley had a unique way of “telling it like it is” without offending, and always with a smile.  He attended Lycoming College in Pennsylvania to become a preacher.  He transferred to Syracuse University to continue his studies; however, he lost his brother in World War II and came back to Batavia to operate the family farm with his father Bert and mother Annabelle.  Harley was very well known in the cabbage world and often visited the Fresh Express headquarters in Florida.  He also had side jobs, selling propane gas with his buddy Glen Lambein and an outdoor paint product plus a logging business.  Harley was a good provider for his family and a strong man of faith.  He sold the family farm to his friends at My T Acres when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and his son Gregg and grandson Stephen continue his legacy with the Call family today.  After recovery, he began a Lincoln Log business with his son Doug and enjoyed meeting people at the New York State Fair and throughout the region. 

Harley was a strong man of faith, and raised his family with integrity and Christian values.

Harley was active in the Batavia Sertoma Club, and fondly remembered the hours spent at the ice skating rink they created in a parking lot at John Kennedy School in Batavia.  He also was instrumental in the building of the First United Methodist Church building on Lewiston Road as a church Trustee, and volunteered with the youth to paint the inside of the building and mission work by harvesting squash to give to local food banks.  Harley was also active on the Grandview Cemetary Board of Directors and was often found supervising the grounds upkeep on the Clinton Street site, and volunteering to mow the lawn at the Methodist church Lewiston Road location.  His friend Dick Siebert tapped him to become a Genesee County Elections commissioner in the early 2000s, which he thoroughly enjoyed.  It was his way to give back to the community that had given him so much.  In the later years, Harley enjoyed his Saturday morning “Barber Conable” coffee meetings with the boys and appreciated their friendship.

Harley was a wonderful caregiver to the love of his life Jean Harloff.  He supported her as a schoolteacher and mentor to so many children in the Batavia area during her 37 ½ years in education, and cared for her in her final years.  Harley sold his home and move into Washington Towers, where he made many friends and enjoyed giving managers Vicki and Valerie a “hard time”.  Ill health forced Harley to move to LeRoy Village Green in May 2021 and he was given the dignity and care he deserved and needed. 

Harold Harloff is survived by his children, Gregg (Susan) Harloff of Batavia, Marilyn (Todd) Helming of Amherst and Douglas (Judy) Harloff of Oakfield.  Grandchildren Stephen (Luis), Harloff , Geoffrey Harloff and Erika (Robert) Waver, Katie (Matt) McCracken of Batavia, Joshua (Katie) Harloff of Oakfield, Emily (Adam) Drilling Weed of Orlando, FL, and Kristen Drilling of Batavia, also 7 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is survived by his sister Marjorie Long of Batavia and dear friend Beverly Gerkin and her daughter Dawn   His brother Donald and sister Ruth Higley Weber predeceased Harold.  His beloved wife Jean Harloff passed on April 9, 2009.  Sister in law Marjorie Harrower Spaulding, and brother in law Robert and Carol Harrower have predeceased Harley.

The family is very grateful for the patience and care given to Harley at the Village Green.

  Francis J. Amrhein, many knew him as either “Frank, Butch or Stach”, 76, of Attica, New York, passed away on March 23, 2022, at Rochester Memorial Hospital surrounded by family.  He was born November 1, 1945, in Buffalo New York, the son of the late Francis J. and Agnes M. (Kalieta) Amrhein.

Frank was a veteran of the United States Army and was later employed by and retired from Attica Prison as a New York State Correctional Officer.  He was a member of St. Vincent’s Church in Attica.

He is survived by his children, Michelle L. (Wes) Persun of PA, Frank J. (Erin) Amrhein and William M. (Maggie) Amrhein of SC; a brother, Dennis Amrhein of Depew; grandchildren Matthew, Quinten and Mara Persun, Deziree (Persun) Rosenberg, Reid and Emma Amrhein and Everly Amrhein; 1 great grandchild with another on the way as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Linda M. (Gorom) Amrhein; sisters Barbara Amrhein and Joan (Amrhein) Gajewski; brother-in-law Bernard (Cookie) Gajewski.

Corfu - Angelo Jekov passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 6, 2022. Angelo was born on February 1, 1959 to Jeliasko and Luigina R. Jekov in Buffalo, NY.

Angelo is survived by his wife, Christine; Mother, Rose; brother, Vincenzo; daughters, Luigina, Jacqueline, Tiffany and Kimberly; along with four grandchildren. Angelo worked at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo for 28 years before retiring with Medxcel in 2021. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and spending time with his family.

Friends and family are requested to join a memorial luncheon on Sunday, April 10th  at 2437 William Street, Cheektowaga  NY 14206 from 1 to 4 pm.

Corfu - Richard L. Hale, 74 of Corfu passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, (April 5, 2022) at his home in Corfu.

Mr. Hale was born February 27, 1948 in Batavia, a son of Norma (Foster) Hale of Batavia and the late LaVerne Hale.

Richard was a parishioner of Resurrection Parish, a veteran of the US Navy, and a retiree of Genesee Community College where he was a maintenance mechanic for 30-years. He was an avid model car enthusiast; attending car shows to both buy and sell model cars. He was a gifted carpenter and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He is the husband of the late Sheila (Pribison) Hale. He is also preceded in death by his son, Jason C. Hale, and brother, Daniel Hale.

Surviving along with his mother is his daughter, Jacqueline (Douglas) Ferris of LeRoy; grandsons, Jacob Ferris and Trevor Pahl; sisters, Patricia Diaz of Batavia, and Margaret (Frank) Zambito of Elba. several nieces and nephews also survive.

Family and friends are invited to attend Richard 's Funeral Mass at 11:00 am on Friday, (April 8th, 2022) from St. Joseph's Church, 303 East Main Street in Batavia.  Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery with military honors will be private.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. S. Byron ~ Lester G. Heins, age 95, a lifelong resident of South Byron, passed away at home on Monday morning, April 4, 2022.

     He was born August 20, 1926 in Rochester, NY, a son of the late Lester J. and Ethel Lansbury Heins.

     Lester was a U.S. Navy veteran, where he was a member of the Seabee Division.  He was a 74 year member of the LeRoy American Legion Post #576.  He and his father operated their own trucking business and farming operation in the Byron area, which he retired from driving at age 80 and continued to work around the family farm until age 92.

      He was a member of the Byron Fire Department for many years and also a member of the South Byron Methodist Church.

     He is survived by his son, Gerald Heins and daughter, Nancy Johnson, both of Byron; grandchildren, Todd Wade and Hillary Heins and his great-grandchildren, Skylar, Samantha, Hunter, Hallie, Colin and Brantley, along with many nieces and nephews.

     He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara J. Heins in 1989.

     There are no prior calling hours and a graveside service with military honors will be held at a future date in the Morganville Cemetery.
