John Henry DeWitt

By T.J. Woodward

John Henry DeWitt, age 69, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday August 31, 2018 at Buffalo General Medical Center. John was born on September 4, 1948 in Latham, New York. He was son of the late Helen Ward DeWitt and Byron R. DeWitt of Pavilion.

Beloved husband of Caryn Valle-DeWitt and devoted father of John Byron DeWitt (Christina) of Amherst, Maria Danielle Maxwell of Richmond Virginia, Joanna Blackmon (Adam) of Rochester, and Michael Dominic of Buffalo. He was the caring grandfather to Philip John and Ava Maria Maxwell.  He left many family members, nieces, nephews, and cherished friends and neighbors who we are privileged to call extended family.

John was a devoted husband to Caryn for 40 years. He cherished her, and in return he was the center of her world. He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him for his love, kindness, generosity, integrity, wit, humor, compassion, strength and selflessness. His accomplishments were many. He attended Genesee Community and Georgetown Colleges. He was an avid golfer and served on the Board at Stafford Country Club in various capacities and as President. He also served on the Board of Trustees for Genesee Community College Foundation for many years.  He was an asset to any project he devoted his time to. He had a love for cooking and was a connoisseur of fine wine. For those fortunate enough to be seated at the table with him and enjoy a meal with the perfect wine pairing, considered themselves treated.  He was an avid reader and had an insatiable desire for knowledge. He could have multiple books going at any given time. This added to his ability to articulate and be versed on any subject area with accuracy and precision.

The family will be present at 9:00-10:00AM on Friday September 7, 2018 at Sts. Peter & Paul RC Church 5480 Main St. Williamsville, NY 14221 where a 10:00AM Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow visitation.
