In a perfect world, the government would not have to subsidize industry. However, it is not a perfect world, and sometimes it is helpful to offset other country's subsidies and "encourage" industry to bring back jobs from overseas.
What would be be even nicer is if states, counties, and cities did not try to outbid one another to steal industries from each other. Encourage industry by having solid infrastructure and skilled workers (whether the skills be welding, programming, or simply the ability to read, write, and do basic math).
Here's another example why fighting against corporate welfare, government subsidizing, state aid, crony capitalization... call it whatever, is a waste of time. Because the majority are dumbed down to believe it's a good thing, each and every time it's offered.
Of course, those jobs coming back to the local community is a good thing. I'm happy for PW Minor and Genesee County. Once again though, it is a band aid and an aspirin being used to treat the symptoms, instead of trying to eradicate the disease. These jobs left and PWM was in trouble due to regulatory and high tax issues that are hammering the middle (working) class of NYS. How does this help that? In fact it makes it more difficult to ease the burden on other businesses. Good news / bad news. More American made products and local jobs - Good. Continuing to ignore the root cause - bad.
Dave, I agree with everything you've said in this thread. And you know how vocal I have been for years as an opponent to GCEDC and all other targeted tax breaks for business. ESPECIALLY for thriving businesses like Liberty Pumps, Dick's, etc.
In this particular case, yes I still oppose it. But not quite as vehemently This is not a case like when Mr.Patel was given tax breaks to reduce his utility bills by installing better windows ( No jobs were "retained or created" Mr. Hyde).
P W Minor was a faltering company. Closing through no fault of workers. Mismanagement? I don't know.
Regardless, this time there is concrete evidence of keeping hard working people in their jobs, and even bringing back jobs back from the country that basically has owned us for 12 years. (That's HUGE for me personally).
I hope I've explained how I see the differences. I again state my firm opposition to what we both know as "Steve Hyde Corporate Welfare".
My thoughts on this issue are unchanged, frankly I'm getting tired of writing the same thing over and over. But, here goes; when money is taken from everyone but a selected few are allowed to pay less without lowering the cost of government, then logically it follows that the ones paying will have to pay more. Simple
Thanks for asking though and we should all keep up the good fight, but as Brian wrote above it doesn't seem to be making any difference. People have been told over and over that government re-distribution of their money is making their lives better. Proof that if enough people repeat a lie enough times, it gets accepted as fact. The GCEDC along with the myriad of IDA's in NYS just keep on doing it, unimpeded. BTW it is still illegal per the NY State Constitution to use the state's money to support local business, but the highest court of the state decided that since they've been doing it for years, then its OK. Can't make this stuff up.

So the "dumbed down" in your idea wins.
"call it whatever, is a waste of time".
Trying to reason with such a defeatist attitude is very much indeed a waste of my time.
Just go to bed - just bury your head in the covers, Brian. Continue being a non factor.......
