David Gerald Culver

David Gerald Culver of East Shelby passed away early morning of Sunday October 19, 2014 at his home under Hospice care while surrounded by family after a long fought illness. He was 74 years old.

David was born on April 25, 1940 in Medina, NY to the late Francis and Robina (Hay) Culver. He graduated from Medina High School in 1959 and joined the United States Army as an MP. He was stationed in Puerto Rico during the “Cuban Missile Crisis”. He then worked for Harrison Radiator (Delphi) for 33 years before retiring in 1998. He married Gail “Anstey” on June 15, 1963 and they celebrated their 51st Wedding Anniversary this past summer. Throughout his life David has always played in the Monday night Euchre league since the early 1960’s.

He was also very active in the Medina Jr Mini League, serving as an umpire for many years and then coaching the “Marine Midland Reds” for several years in the 1970’s and 80’s, and then umpiring for a few more years. David was very active in the Orleans County Jr 4-H Fair serving as maintenance crew manager and Fair Manager for many years, helping to bring about many changes to the fair. In 1990 he was named Medina Journal Registers “Man of the Year”. David was also active in the East Shelby Volunteer Fire Department.

He was an active member for over 50 years. He served as Assistant Fire Chief, Vice President, President and Trustee, and was always counted on as being the first one to respond to calls. He was a member of VFW Lincoln Post #1483 and Junior Wilson Sportsmens Club. David was extremely proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments and enjoyed watching them grow up. He was most recently proud of his grandson “Nic” and his recent accomplishment of obtaining a historical marker for the “Stielow Case”.

David leaves behind his wife of 51 years Gail (Anstey) Culver, 2 sons David (Tammy) Culver of S. Alabama NY, Daniel Culver of Medina NY. A sister Catherine (Culver) Skinner of Richmond Texas. He also is survived by 4 grandchildren Ashley (Josh) Dyrbala of Oakfield, Erica Culver , S. Alabama, Chelsea Culver of Medina and Nicholas “Nic” Culver of Medina and 1 great granddaughter Chloe Dyrbala of Oakfield. He was predeceased by his brother Robert Culver in 1984.  He will also be deeply missed by “Whip” his loyal companion.

Relatives and friends may call from 2-4PM & 7-9PM Sunday, October 26, 2014 at the Bates & Tuttle Funeral Home, 226 Pearl St., Medina. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 27, 2014 at 11AM at the Millville United Methodist Church, 12373 Maple Ridge Road, Medina with the Rev. Christopher Wylie officiating. Burial will be in Millville Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by members of Butts-Clark American Legion Post #204, and VFW Lincoln Post #204 . Rev. Christopher Wylie will officiate.
