The Genesee Community College men’s basketball team took down Niagara College of Canada 85-76 on Tuesday night to start their season 1-0.
The Cougars were 4 of 9 from three-point range in the first half and shot better than 46% from the floor to take a 41-30 lead into the break.
Niagara came out strong in the second half going on a 7-0 run and cut the Genesee lead down to four. It was strong guard play that kept GCC out in front and in the lead for the remainder of the game, ending in a nine point win. Guards Kenton Chan-Man (Brooklyn, NY) and Kevin Nascimento (New York, NY) combined for 45 points, 24 of which came in the second half.
Chan-Man finished the night with a game high 25 points and Nascimento added 20. Tyshawn Ferguson (Chicago, IL) also netted double figure points with 14 and led the team with 9 rebounds.

The win is not only the first for Genesee this year, but it is also the first win for interim head coach Terry George who is in his first season at the helm.
GCC will play on Friday night in the Bronx, NY when they take on Monroe College at 8pm.

The Lady Cougars started the game on a 10-2 run and took a 33-29 lead into the half. Jasmine Armstead (Rochester, NY) scored 11 of her 16 points in the first half to help give Genesee the halftime advantage.
GCC used a 7-0 run to start the second half to up their lead to eleven at 40-29 and did not trail during the final half. Despite being out-rebounded 54-49 in the game, the Lady Cougars took advantage of second chance opportunities. They scored 28 second chance points compared to Niagara’s 8.
Chyna Lennox (Moseley, VA) led the way for GCC scoring a team high 17 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Kayla Golden (Lackawanna, NY) and Carrie Blunt (Syracuse, NY) added 14 and 13 points respectively.

Genesee starts the season off 1-0 and will play again on Friday and Saturday in the Mohawk Valley Tournament.
