Pax Christi of Genesee County Announces Series on Islam
According to Chairperson William Privett, Pax Christi of Genesee County, the local peace movement, is announcing a three-part series,
Understanding Islam for the 21st Century.
Wednesday, October 29 – 7:00-8:30 pm: A presentation by Dr. Muhammad Shafiq from the Rochester Islamic Center on the basic tenets of Islam.
Wednesdays, November 5th and 12th – 7:00-8:30 pm: A book discussion on Islam: What Non-Muslims Should Know, by John Kaltner.
All three evenings of the program will be held in the Gallery Room of the Richmond Memorial Library, 19 Ross St., in Batavia free of charge.
Books may be purchased at the Present Tense Bookstore, 101 Washington Ave., Batavia and at the library the nights of the series. The cost is $7.50.
Privett said that because misunderstanding and lack of awareness ultimately can lead to hate and violence, the local Pax Christi Chapter hopes that this program will help area residents to come to a better understanding of a faith that is shared by 1.3 billion people worldwide.
Dr. Shafiq, who teaches at Nazareth College in Rochester, will open the program with an overview of important elements of the faith. Dr. Ron Hallman, professor at Roberts Wesleyan will moderate the two evenings of book discussion.
