Because the word "corporation" invokes in many a picture of wealth, greed, selfishness, 1%er, fat cat, privilege, and power. It denotes someone having something they don't, someone who didn't earn what they have but somehow gamed a system and now lord it over the small people. I don't agree with the take on the Citizens United decision that corporations are people, but at the same time filing as a corporation doesn't mean you have to check your rights as an individual at the door. If your beliefs carry into your business and they don't match with the community standard, or a large group of folks decide that they are offensive, then let the people vote with their dollars and their feet.
imho....people eat, sleep, bleed, cry, laugh, have feelings, people know how to read and write, and a number of other things only a living human being can do, a corporation can't do any of these. I can point out a person, I can't point out a corporation. I can sit down and have dinner with a person but I can't sit down with a corporation.
I think Jeff hit the nail solid, many blame the demise of our economy on corporate greed. This would be the large corporate giants, exxon, mobil, etc., as well as all the
corps. that moved oversees for cheap labor, no benefits, unsafe working conditions,
and no one to stop them from destroying the environment.
Any corporation guilty of this behavior should be put to death by any means possible.
I voted no as I interpreted Constitutional Rights as those that real honest-to-goodness human beings have, such as speech, religion, etc.
Corporations should have rights, but not on par with people. A corporation is a legal entity created to facilitate business and financial matters by allowing (relatively) simple pooling of resources and shielding investors from excessive financial harm.
Corporations do (and should) have some of the rights people have, such as protection from searches and seizures, and the right to a proper trial. However, that piece of paper should NOT have freedom of speech, and certainly not freedom of religion.
Yes - individuals do work at and even run corporations, and their working at a corporation does not take away their personal rights. However, granting a legal entity whose construction is for financial purposes rights as humans is ridiculous.
