Ranzenhofer, Hawley on hand at Byron-Bergen to help celebrate passage of yogurt bill

By Howard B. Owens

Sen. Mike Ranzenhofer and Assemblyman Steve Hawley just happened to be in Bergen this morning when they learned that Gov. Andrew Cuomo had signed legislation first conceived by students at Byron-Bergen School to make yogurt the official state snack.

The two representatives who carried the bill through the legislature immediately headed over to the school to celebrate the bill's passage with the students who made it all possible.

Below, a recording of the announcement, with Principal Brian Meister.

Several of the students wanted to hug Sen. Ranzenhofer when they first saw him at the school this afternoon.

Seriously???

Is there anything these 2 won't do to get in front of a camera?

Did either offer any comments on the recent announcement regarding the staffing reductions at one of the local yogurt plants?

Timing is everything :)

I was the only reporter there, and I only found out they were going there by accident. I wasn't specifically invited. It was a spur of the moment thing for them to go there from the exercise equipment dedication at Hickory Park. It wasn't intended to be a media event. So your comment is rather misplaced.

And I didn't discuss with them the Alpina news, which The Batavian reported first, because it wasn't appropriate at an event meant to celebrate the accomplishment of elementary school students.

There are districts where residents rarely see their representatives. I appreciate the level of direct interaction with constituents we get with our representatives.
