By Howard B. Owens

There's a new thrift store in the city.

Volunteers of America has opened a resale shop in East Town Plaza, next to Aldi's.

The 13,600-square-foot store employs nine people and offers up the usual variety of thrift store items, from clothing and used books to furniture and housewares.

Store manager Jamie Reece said VoA offers a variety of services to help people who need a restart in life -- from work experience programs and new wardrobes to victims of domestic violence.

VoA is also interested in working with and assisting other charities in Genesee County.

"We're still reaching out to the other non-profits," Reece said. "We're trying to work with the other non-profits in the area, anyway we can help."

George, you have to go there and see for yourself. I was in there yesterday and didn't see any Tupperware, but then again I wasn't looking for any. I did see, would you believe, a Bobby Sherman LP complete with a fold-out poster of him wearing a groovy shirt and leather pants. Tight leather pants.

Among the treasures I hauled home -- an ankle-length mohair coat with a bright checkered pattern with tones of raspberry, pink, magenta and purple. It's in perfect condition and so is the lining. It's loud but fun! I found the original tags in the inside pocket. Made in America. Suggested retail $300. Discount store price $149. Markdown Clearance price $119. My price $11.99. Right on!

George is obviously not a "thrifty" shopper - as many of us are. Maybe he's rich enough where he never had to worry about budgeting his money. I'm not that lucky. I am THRILLED to have another thrift store in Batavia - along with the Salvation Army on Jackson and My Sister's Closet at the YWCA on North Street. Don't throw stones, George. YOU might NEED to shop at one of these stores one day. You never know, you know.

I love bargins, but not sure if there are many. A used bath towel was marked $3.00....you can buy a new one for $2.50 at Walmart, Bedspreads the same thing. I know you are in business to make money, but the things are used. Loved my time looking, had some nice things, but priced a bit to high. The people were very courteous. Will come in now and then to check things out.

Exactly, Marjorie, you have to weigh the factors of thrift-store prices versus retail pricing of similar items and be savvy about shopping. I real bargain hunter, like you, knows the difference and will succeed in getting a deal. But shopping irregardless to benefit the charity isn't necessarily bad either.
