Today's Poll: Should the commercial hunting and sale of deer be permitted?

By Howard B. Owens

Just let hunters like me use modern weapons for a larger period of time. Make licenses cheaper. Allow use of buckshot and rifles. The answers are simple. Commercializing sale of game meat means less cash in my pocket and meat in my freezer.

There has to be a number of hunters who would salivate at the possibility of stuffing their freezers by catching multiple deer if the deer are overpopulating the area.

Folks who are willing and able to hunt for food should get first dibs rather than commercializing deer hunting.

Uh! Duh!!
Double the season and double (or even, triple) the limit.
You'll cull deer. It's not like you can't revert back to the 'old' system, if/or when needed.

How does one reconcile establishment of a domestic venison market, commercial hunting to supply it and the reality that the deer (for the most part) populate private property? Suburbia notwithstanding, many landowners have no issue granting permission to friends and neighbors wanting to game-shoot on their property. A commercial enterprise is a horse of a different color. Will landowners welcome this? Will the get-rich-quick loons rush to the nearest Gander Mountain to outfit an Alan Quatermain persona? I have this vision of WNY rutted by a small army of ATVs marked "Bucks For Bucks, Inc." ...A trail of Busch beer cans, broken fences and carcasses of dogs mistaken for deer. Forgive my pessimism, but I know a few "winners" who would be all over this idea- with catastrophic results.

Really Jason...maybe you should keep up with current events in NYS... Wolves have been back for a while. Not in great numbers but it's been starting. This article is already 4 yrs old...

Also there is...

So it is a likely possibility that wolves could actually make a comeback. Mother nature has a way of balancing things out despite our meddling.

I dont Raymond, we used to see the coyotes go out on the ice in Ithaca in the early am and eat the perch or two that would be frozen to the lake ice. Very rare to see, also there were a few you'd see in the woods fleetingly.

We have three or four in the woods behind our complex here in N. Greece, and there are a number of them in Spencerport near my mother's complex.

North Greece? That's not Wood Run is it? My parents have seen some there... As far as Spencerport, that's not too surprising right at the end of Washington St coming out onto 104 by where Basil's Diner used to be there is 100's of acres of land around that end of Salmon Creek that had coyote packs that were like ghosts.

The coyote packs are more spread out through Spencerport these days. Mom's complex is right off of Route 31 in the Manitou Rd. area.

Our complex, where my wife and I live, is Greenleaf Rd. and the OSP.
