GrandPals
GrandPals is a volunteer program that places volunteers in LeRoy Manor, an adult home. LeRoy Manor houses approximately 90 residents, the majority of which suffer from a mental illness. Most residents are ages 60-75 and have little to no contact with family or friends outside the manor. Volunteering to spend time with one or more residents will provide an opportunity to change someone’s life and make a friend.
Who Can Volunteer?
Anyone aged 18+ or minors with parental consent/accompaniment. A person of any age can improve the quality of life for a resident.
When Do I Volunteer?
It’s up to you! Volunteering can be done at a convenient time for you between the hours of 8 am and 8 pm, seven days a week. The recommended volunteer time is one hour per week; however, this is based on the volunteer’s availability. Volunteers who are with residents more than three hours per week may be required to take a training to comply with state law.
What Should I do with My GrandPal?
Working with a resident is like establishing a friendship. Going out for coffee, to the movies, dinner, a community event, church, a game, a concert or the library. Choose an activity that your GrandPal and yourself will most enjoy. Another option is spending time with residents at LeRoy Manor. Playing a game, cards, bringing in a movie, performing a hobby or talent, working on crafts or having a meaningful conversation. The possibilities are endless!
How do I Get Started?
Contact Stephanie at 343-9162 ext. 11 or Leslie at 768-6291. Depending on your availability and preferences, you will be matched with one or more residents. Any questions will be answered and a schedule set to meet with the resident, accompanied by Stephanie, and establish future meetings. You will choose the days, times and activities and leave a lasting impression with your new GrandPal.
