Should Congress ban extra charges for additional toppings at your local Pizza shop?
Or
Should Congress ban extra charges for Deliveries of any kind?
Or
Should Congress ban extra charges for minutes used over you cell phone plan?
How dumb is this? You choose all of these things! The current law states that the banks must provide a free statement, not how it is delivered. Printing costs money, electronic is free.
Some banks will charge, others will not. Let the consumer decide where they want to go. Stop wasting our money on stupid laws! Do any of you who voted Yes realize how much money will be wasted pushing this piece of garbage through?
To be honest, a bill like this would be passed through with many bills along with it. So in the end, not a lot of money will be spent. Not enough to get in a tiff about.
If a bank notifies it will charge more for paper statements, take your money to another bank. The credit union- as of 2005, didn't even have an online feature. This is a service issue. The bank that wants to keep customers who demand paper-statements will attract those customers. Call the banks; ask if they intend to retain the service- talk to the manager- indicate that the service is non-negotiable. (You may have to visit the bank to get the local branch phone number- often banks only publish an 800 corporate number.)
Frankly, I see an advantage to regular bank shake-ups; everyone should yank their money and switch switch banks as soon as the penalty period ends. It would improve customer service- maybe even outfit your kitchen with new small appliances. I went into the Chili HSBC branch a few months back- all the tellers were occupied with something other than customers in line. One was on the phone- obviously a personal call. The guy ahead of me did his best DI imitation, "Get off the phone! I'm paying your salary now!" The teller jumped-right-smart.
Anthony, Not a lot of money here, not a lot there, but then it starts to add up. The government needs to stay out of private enterprise, including bailing them out when they screw up.
Some older people do not have internet access or cannot afford another $10-$15 bill(or more) for internet access. All this is,is just a way for the banks to screw us some more. They are as bad as NY gov't for coming up w/ fees and surcharges.Don't think credit unions so great, either. Most have limited atm access and are starting to tack on charges to your accounts.A local one already has started charging for paper statements, calling it a "maintenance fee"-$3 every month....
Some people have to be pulled into the computer age kicking and screaming. I for one still like to see the paper bill in the mailbox before I pay on-line. I maybe forced to rethink this in view of additional charges for a paper copy. The USPS can't be too happy about about this.
