Gary Diegelman and Norm Itjen, president of the Genesee Sheriff's Employees Association, hold two of the school backpacks the association gave away to school-aged children last night at the Batavia Muckdogs game. The backpacks contained school supplies and a gift card for Wal-Mart.

It was particulary nice to see a family that already received a backpack through the drawing receive a second one because they had a few left over ($100 for one family). I hope they use it wisely.

I personally believe that the giveaway at the Muckdogs game was a way better idea than the free-for-all cashh giveaway they had!

I agree with you, Bud. That was the point I tried to make when the story was posted on The Batavian. Some did not agree and thought the cash payout was acceptable.
