By Bea McManis

Among Americans 50 and older: — 45 percent say food prices have caused a hardship for their budgets — 39 percent think at least some foods will have to be rationed within a year — 47 percent are shopping for food less frequently — 41 percent are eating less meat — 18 percent have started eliminating some meals Are you in this age group? What hardships are you, or do you perceive to face in the next few months?

I am less than fifty but feeling the same pain.
Besides chicken, I eat processed meat product. I eat rice, noodles and like bread when its cheap.
One meal a day for me, I know I am not alone.
I am too young to understand what the depression was really like but I have cried after standing in line for the food give away last month.
Thank goodness I am not starving. Hope things get better.

I am less than fifty also.46We the boys and i are on a very tight fixed budget. We'd be far worse off if it weren't for stores like aldis. And the dollar stores. It's hard. They say ya should have, 5 fruits and veggies ,a day.We don't.I don't know anyone who does do you?.Somewhere i saw food prices went up 8%.It seems much more to me.I think it has alot to do with fuel costs.I perceive since there will be huge budget cuts $$the poor like us should expect to be some of the first cuts.If it were'nt for places like the salvation army and the caravan who help many. They go without food. It's just plain depressing to go shopping the way things are.I saw on the news awhile back a bank closed that was scary. And ther'es no way the fdic could cover everyone if theres another stock crash what will happen Bee and Gee??

The five fruits and vegetables a day can be a challenge, I agree. However, with a little creativity it can be done, and not break the budget.
Add 4 ounces of orange juice in the morning (1 fruit)
Mix in fresh, frozen, or canned spinach with eggs for an omelet for breakfast (1 veg, 1 protein)
Spread applesauce on toast instead of butter/margerine (1 fruit)
Lunch
Include a fruit (apple, pear, orange, etc.) in the lunches (1 fruit)
A tossed salad with a sandwich for lunch (1 veg)
Add a tomato slice to a sandwich (1 veg)
Mid afternoon snack:
a piece of fruit (1 fruit)
a fruitcup (1 fruit)
celery with cream cheese (1 veg)
cut up raw broccoli and cauliflower (1 veg)
Dinner:
vegetable of choice (1 veg)
Evening Snack:
fruit cup (1 fruit)
1/2 cup of applesauce (1 fruit)
grilled tomato with italian seasoning (1 veg)

The possibilities are endless and inexpensive when you take advantage of in store sales; farmers' markets; roadside stands etc.
