Knees and other things of minimal interest

By Bea McManis

There is this lady, on early morning TV, who leads golden agers through low impact exercises.  These are simple exercises or so it would seem.  One morning she demonstrated leg lifts.  All one had to do was sit up straight in a chair and with knees together slowly lift both legs up about two inches up from the floor.  How hard could that be?

I placed my coffee on the table; sat up straight; and slowly lifted my legs.  The resulting "pop" sounded like a rifle shot.  My right knee starting to swell.  The swelling eventually subsided, leaving me with a noticable 'knot' just to the right of the right knee cap.  Standing up is now a challenge.  I never know if the knee is going to hold me or if it will turn to jelly and just fold.  My family doctor ordered x-rays then determined that it was osteoarthritis.  An appointment was made with a specialist who I will see this morning.  Did I mention that it took five weeks to get an appointment?  Five weeks!

Dinner, last night, was a simple garden salad.  I sliced the leftover baby artichokes and tossed them in the salad.  What a treat!   We were both out last night.  I thought he'd grab something while he was out, so there was no need to think about dinner for two.  When I got home, about 8:15pm, there were signs that he beat me back, but he wasn't there.  So, I opted for the salad.  I was just finishing when he arrived with a pizza from Main St. Pizza.  That is a temptation I can't resist.  Dinner, then, was a garden salad and two slices of pizza.  I rationalized the pizza by having a diet soda to wash it down.

We munched on pizza and watched The Mentalist.  It is an interesting show.  We watched the last five minutes of the Dancing With the Stars Result Show to see who was eliminated.  It was a shocker.  I expected the rodeo guy to go but the voters thought different.  Can there really be that many rodeo fans watching that show?

I'm reading "...And Ladies of the Club" by Helen Hooven Santmyer.  It is a tome!  After clearing the table, I sat in the kitchen reading.  I didn't even realize that a hour had passed and barely realized that he left until the phone rang.  He called to admonish me not to spend the night reading because I had that appointment in the morning.

So, here I am at 7:05am.  Sipping coffee, contemplating life in general, and determined to get my shower in early.  The beginning of another day.
