A two-car accident, believed to be with injuries, is reported at Transit and Bridge roads. Elba Fire Department and Mercy medics are responding.
UPDATE 11:30 a.m.: A responder on scene reports injuries are minor.
UPDATE 11:36 a.m.: A second ambulance is requested to the scene, non-emergency mode.
UPDATE 11:51 a.m.: A third ambulance is called in, also in non-emergency mode.
UPDATE 11:54 a.m.: The address is determined be "right at the intersection" -- 6050 Transit Road.
UPDATE 12:07 p.m.: All Elba units are back in service. The northbound lane will reopen after a tow and third ambulance leave the scene. So far, two patients are being transported to UMMC.
UPDATE 12:12 p.m.: The roadway is reopened. One patient is a 16-year-old female driver who was ambulatory at the scene and is being taken to the hospital for evaluation. The driver of the other car is a 38-year-old woman, who, along with a 4-year-old boy passenger, are being taken to the hospital with minor aches and pains.
A two-car accident with one injury is reported at Indian Falls and Cleveland roads. East Pembroke Fire Department and Mercy medics are responding.
UPDATE 5:57 p.m.: The accident is not blocking traffic and the vehicles involved are off the roadway. Law enforcement is en route.
UPDATE 6:23 p.m.: A pair of tow trucks are on scene. One of the vehicles is a commercial vehicle.
UPDATE 6:27 p.m.: A 24-year-old male, with no complaints of pain, is being transported to UMMC. He is backboarded and collared as a precaution.
UPDATE 6:47 p.m.: A 49-year-old male is also being taken to UMMC and is said to have some bruising and seat belt rash.
City firefighters are responding to the area of 121 Bank St. for an open burn complaint.
UPDATE 11:48 a.m.: City fire is returning to service. Upon inspection, the complaint was determined to be unfounded.
Batavia City School District will hold its board of education election and budget vote for the 2012-13 academic year on Tuesday, May 15.
The polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. at John Kennedy School, located at 166 Vine St., for properties north of Route 5. Same hours apply for voting at Batavia High School, 260 State St., for properties south of Route 5.
A motor-vehicle accident was reported at 9:45 a.m. in the area of Richley and Simonds roads in Darien. A pickup truck will need to be wenched out. The scene is at a curve at the bottom of a hill. Darien Fire Department and Mercy medics are there. Authorities are handling traffic control.
UPDATE 10:13 a.m.: One lane of traffic is being reopened. A couple of Darien units are leaving, back in service.
UPDATE 10:28 a.m.: A male in his 50s is being taken to UMMC for evaluation and to have his blood drawn because he allegedly had positive results on a breathalyzer test for alcohol at the scene. The accident is described as minor -- vehicle vs. road sign and fence post.
UPDATE 10:39 a.m.: The truck has been towed away. Both lanes of traffic are open. All Darien unites are back in service.

A two-car accident with injuries is reported in front of McDonald's, located at 4138 W. Main St., Road. It is partially blocking the roadway. Town of Batavia Fire Department and two ambulances are responding. There are complaints of neck and back pain.
UPDATE 5:51 p.m.: A third ambulance is called to the scene, non-emergency mode.
UPDATE 6:03 p.m.: Two patients are being transported to Strong Memorial Hospital and one is going to UMMC.
UPDATE 6:07 p.m.: The patient being taken to UMMC is a 26-year-old man complaining of wrist pain.
UPDATE 6:09 p.m.: All Town of Batavia units are back in service.

A grass fire is reported at 3962 Batavia-Elba Town Line Road in Oakfield. It's on the Lamb Farms property and is estimated to be the size of four or five football fields. Town of Batavia Fire Department is responding
This is a dairy farm.
UPDATE 12:25 p.m.: There are no barns or other structures currently in the path of the fire.
UPDATE 12:28 p.m.: A tanker from Oakfield is called. The chief on scene says "This is nowhere near the size it was originally dispatched as." It appears to be following a path along a ditch, not approaching any structures.
UPDATE 12:33 p.m.: Firefighters approaching the scene are told they'll probably see more black smoke than gray smoke because some tires in the field have caught fire.
UPDATE 12:42 p.m.: Foam is being used to put out the tires on fire. The easterly edge of the blaze is knocked down. The chief says "I think we'll be in good shape" when asked if more manpower or equipment will be needed.
UPDATE 12:47 p.m.: The foam has squelched the tire fire. The overall blaze is under control.
UPDATE 12:58 p.m.: The fire is out.
UPDATE 1:11 p.m.: All units are back in service. The revised estimated area of the fire swath is 30 feet by 200 feet.
An injury accident involving a bicyclist is reported between Tops Market and Batavia Marine on West Main Street. City of Batavia Fire Department and Mercy medics are responding.

Town of Batavia Town Clerk Teressa Morasco has been elected by her peers as a District Director for the New York State Town Clerks Association. This is a distinct and admirable honor bestowed only on a few clerks of the 932 towns throughout New York State.
In this leadership position, Morasco will mentor clerks and be a liaison between the counties of Alleghany, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Orleans, Wyoming and the state association. District Eight, which she will represent, will be well served by her experience. Her term will run from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2015.
Matthew R. Riggi, of Stafford, is a candidate for the AAS in Travel and Tourism: Hospitality & Events Management (with honors) from Herkimer County Community College.
Riggi is one of 727 candidates eligible to participate in the college's 44th annual commencement ceremony on Friday, May 18.
Herkimer County Community College is a unit of the State University of New York, located in Herkimer, about 20 miles east of Utica. With an enrollment of approximately 3,600 students, Herkimer offers more than 40 associate degree and certificate programs, on-campus housing, an active co-curricular activities schedule and a national championship athletic program.

Arbor Day was celebrated on April 27 this year and 69 fourth-graders at Oakfield-Alabama Elementary School rolled up their sleeves and planted a tree. The students became members of the Fourth Grade Foresters.
The project’s goal is to help revitalize a remarkable idea: observation of Arbor Day in America’s Schools. Each Student receives a tree to take home and plant.
“This project was made possible by the Oakfield-Alabama Lions Club which covered the cost of each individually packaged evergreen tree, so that there would be no cost to the students, the teachers, the school or the taxpayers," said Debra Ersch, co-founder of the Fourth Grade Foresters Project. “It’s a wonderful way to show support for the community, education and the environment."
Fourth Grade Foresters USA was created to provide a simple and inexpensive way for any individual, business or organization to send the fourth-grade students at an elementary school home with a tree of their own to plant and care for. Each Student receives an individually packaged 12”-18” evergreen tree seedling packaged by workers with disabilities.
Lions Clubs from around the world have been committed to protecting the environment for several decades and they understand that every small effort makes a big difference. That is why the Oakfield-Alabama Lions Club is doing its part to reach Lions International’s goal of planting a million trees.
A one-vehicle rollover is reported Old Creek Road near Brookville Road. The driver is trapped inside and water from the creek is starting to seep into the vehicle. Alexander Fire Department is responding.
UPDATE 9:10 a.m.: The driver is now out of the vehicle. A medic is needed.
UPDATE 9:30 a.m.: The driver is not injured, but because she is a minor, age 17, she must be transported to the hospital for evaluation. Alexander is back in service. The car is still in the ditch. Law enforcement is on scene. A tow truck is dispatched.
UPDATE 9:38 a.m.: The driver is being taken to UMMC. She is said to have no complaints.

For the second straight year the Genesee Community College Men's Lacrosse Team has been selected to the NJCAA National Championship Tournament.
The Cougars, the number-four seed, will travel to Nassau Community College in Garden City and play Onondaga Community College, the tournament's number-one seed and the nation's top-ranked team, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 12.
Genesee finished the regular season with a 14-2 record, losing only at Onondaga Community College in their first game of the season and No. 3 Community College of Baltimore County-Essex on the road in April. The Cougars were 1-1 in the Region III playoffs, defeating Finger Lakes Community College 20-0 in the quarterfinals and falling to Monroe Community College 12-11 in the semifinals.
"We've had our best season in school history. We played everyone in the region and took games against some of the top teams in the country," said GCC Head Coach Dave Hoover. "We have a big challenge with Onondaga. They are undefeated but we are going to prepare as hard as we can to give them the best game we can."
Genesee will look to knock off the three-time defending National Champions with an attack that includes two preseason All-Americans and two of the top three scorers in the country.
Sophomores Connor Latimer (Whitby, ON) and Gaehnew Printup (Tuscarora, NY) are second and third respectively in total points. Latimer has scored 66 goals and added 49 assists and Printup has scored 62 goals and assisted on 52 this season.
In their season-opening meeting on March 10th, Onondaga defeated Genesee 24-9. The nine goals however, were the most scored on the Lazers this season.
"When we played them even strength, we played them well," Hoover said. "We need to play a smart, disciplined game and stay out of the penalty box. We are looking forward to the challenge."
Nassau Community College and the Community College of Baltimore County-Essex represent the other NJCAA Final Four matchup, with the winner advancing to take on the winner of Genesee vs. Onondaga for the National Championship on Sunday, May 13th.

The subject will be “No Room for Bullying.” He is slated to become principal at Batavia High School in September.

Clark says, “Bullying has short- and long-term affects for both the student who is bullied and the student who bullies. Students who are bullied often have low self-esteem, depression and anxiety, higher absenteeism, lower school achievement, higher rates of suicidal ideation, and higher rates of illness.
"New research reports that bullying actually ages kids. Children who bully are more likely to get into fights, steal, vandalize, drink alcohol, smoke, be truant, drop out of school, perform poorly in school, perceive a negative climate in school, and carry a weapon.”
While in existence for a long time, he says that bullying has now become a greater problem and is not relegated to the schoolyard.
“Bullying is more widespread, mostly due to technology and social media," the principal said. "The issues continue after school and on weekends and vacations.”
Acknowledged as a leader in the hard work to create a more peaceful place of learning, he says, “I became interested in this issue because I see firsthand how it impacts students and their parents. Some students have taken their own lives because of bullying. That is a tragedy.”
Such a tragedy occurred last year in Williamsville.
Clark is encouraged by developments in the Batavia School District.
“I feel that our district is doing wonderful work with our anti-bullying programming. We need to keep this as a priority in the future. The district is currently preparing for its second annual student survey. The survey will inform the district how the students feel about this issue and where the district needs to focus its efforts.

A car fire is reported at Route 19 and the railroad tracks in the Village of Bergen. Bergen Fire Department is responding.
UPDATE 12:48 p.m.: The owner of the vehicle called dispatch and said the car is not on fire it has just overheated. Engine 27 is on location to check things out nonetheless.
UPDATE 12:51 p.m.: A firefighter confirms the car is overheated. Engine 27 is back in service.
