A man wearing camouflage fatigues was reportedly in a town court within the past hour, refusing the judge's command to show his hands, which he had in his pockets. He apparently wouldn't leave either.
Not sure which court it was.
A Sheriff's Deputy responded and has the man outside of the building. No further word on the matter.
Volunteers for Animals will be having a hotdog stand at the Batavia Walmart starting at 11 a.m. this Saturday, April 23.
They will be offering grilled hotdogs, chips and pop with all proceeds going to the animals at the Genesee County Animal Shelter.
They plan to be there until 6 p.m. or until the dogs run out.
They say "We hope you will come out for a dog and drink to help out the animals at the shelter!"
The final meeting of the school year for the Woolly Book Worms is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 14, in the Children's Room of Richmond Memorial Library.
This is a book discussion group for students in grades 3 to 5 and their favorite adult.
On May 14th, the group will discuss "Erie Canal Sal" by Gretchen Murray Sepik. She is a local author and storyteller who will be attending the meeting to portray her historical costumed narrative of "Surly Sal the Erie Canal Cook."
After her performance, Sepik will lead the book discussion and sign books.

Batavia Cub Scouts Pack 6069 is having a chicken BBQ from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 14.
This is to help support the pack's plans to go to Gettysburg, Pa., in September. The boys and their families are very excited about this big trip, so please come out and help them get there.

Mighty winds have toppled a large tree and it's blocking the roadway at Wyoming Road and Route 19 in Covington, which is part of Pavilion Fire Department's district. Live wires are also down.
Pavilion Fire Department is responding.
Power is out in the vicinity.
"There are lines (down) everywhere," says a responder.
The "four corners" intersection lights aren't working. State Troopers have shut down southbound Route 19 at Route 63 in Pavilion.
Traffic on Route 19 is to be closed to traffic by Wyoming and Crossman roads. Law enforcement is helping direct traffic.
National Grid has been notified. No ETA given.
UPDATE 4:51 p.m.: National Grid is on scene.
UPDATE 5 p.m.: Southbound Route 19 is reopened to traffic.
A tractor-trailer has reportedly dragged down a live wire from a power pole at a residence at 3766 Batavia-Elba Townline Road. It is in the roadway.
Town of Batavia Fire Department is called to the scene. The location is west of Pekin Road.
UPDATE 3:45 p.m.: National Grid has been notified. No ETA given. The residence is completely without power for now.
UPDATE 3:54 p.m.: National Grid is now on scene to fix the problem.

Jessica Ficarella took 2nd Place in the All-Around at the USAG Spring Graffiti Gymnastics Meet April 2nd in West Seneca.
Jessica, who is 10 years old, took 1st Place on vault, 3rd Place on the Uneven Bars and 2nd Place on the Floor Exercise -- earning her the overall 2nd Place finish. Jessica is a fifth-grader at Churchville-Chili Middle School and is a member of the Bright Raven Gymnastics Team which finished in 1st Place at the Graffiti meet.
She is the daughter of Nick and Nancy Ficarella of Churchville who own Ficarella's Pizzeria in Batavia.
Citizen soldier Robert Davis, of Le Roy, has reenlisted in the New York Army National Guard, continuing his commitment to serve his community, state and nation.
Major General Patrick A. Murphy, the Adjutant General, announced made the announcement.
Sergeant 1st Class Davis will continue his service with the Troop A 2-101 Cavalry (Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition).
"Over the past three years, the New York Army National Guard has come from far below authorized strength to 100-percent strength," Murphy said in remarks to the force. "Our priority is to provide ready forces for both state and federal missions and readiness starts with maintaining our strength.
"We have more than 16,000 men and women in the Army and Air National Guard with each individual member having an important role."

City of Batavia Fire Department has responded to a commercial fire alarm at the p.w. minor company at 1 Treadeasy Ave. A firefighter on scene reports nothing showing, no smell of fire.
The alarm company has been contacted and is working to reset the alarm.
The smell of an electrical fire is coming from an apartment at 10537 Bethany Center Road in Bethany. The building is being evacuated.
Stafford Fire and Bethany fire departments are responding.
Alexander is to stand by in its hall for possible mutual aid.
UPDATE 7:52 a.m.: Alexander fire is asked to stand down.
UPDATE 7:59 a.m.: A chief on scene reports that the basement of the building is flooded, burning out the furnace, which apparently tripped a fire alarm.
UPDATE 8:07 a.m.: Stafford fire is standing down.
A head-on collision with serious injuries is reported at 3265 W. Main St. in the Town of Batavia. A responder on scene says one person is unconscious and another person is semiconscious.
Mercy Flight is unavailable. East Pembroke and Town of Batavia fire departments are responding with all available manpower. Two Mercy ambulances are responding.
East Pembroke personnel are shutting down traffic at Route 5 and Hopkins Road. Town of Batavia's crew is shutting down traffic at Wortendyke Road and Route 5.
Oakfield is called to provide extrication equipment.
UPDATE 7:41 a.m.: Mercy Flight in Batavia became available and is launching momentarily to go to the scene.
UPDATE 7:50 a.m.: Mercy Flight is circling and preparing to land in a field of grass northeast of the crash site. Light winds out of the south, the flight crew is told.
UPDATE 7:54 a.m.: Mercy Flight is on the ground. Both patients have been extricated.
UPDATE 8:05 a.m.: A chief reports that a portion of Route 5 will be shut down for at least an hour. One patient is being taken to a hospital via Mercy Flight and the other is going in an ambulance. Hospitals have not been specified. Two flatbed tow trucks are en route.
UPDATE 8:13 a.m.: Sheriff Gary Maha confirmed that one of the crash victims has died and a coroner has been called.
UPDATE 8:28 a.m.: Mercy Flight is going to Strong Memorial Hospital. The next of kin is being notified regarding the death, then the name of the victim will be released.
UPDATE 9:07 a.m.: Route 5 has been reopened. All fire units back in service.
After receiving a record number of entries, the Alfred C. O'Connell Library at Genesee Community College has awarded prizes to seven student poets in its 10th Annual Student Poetry Contest.
Seventy-four poems from 38 poets were entered this year, making the largest number of poets and the biggest pool of poems to date.
First Prize went to Leanne Serrato for her work, "Wisdom of Water."
The award ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 21 in the Alfred C. O'Connell Library. Prizes will be awarded for first, second, third and fourth, as well as an award for a total body of work. This award highlights the poet whose submissions reflected overall high quality. Students were allowed to submit up to three poems.
In addition, two awards will be presented in the Math Poem category. Math faculty at Genesee offer extra credit to students who write a math-related poem and enter it in the contest.
Winners earn a certificate, a journal for future creative writing and are allowed to select an additional prize from an impressive group of gift certificates and prizes donated by local businesses and campus organizations.
This year the contest was supported by The Red Osier Landmark Restaurant, Darien Lake Theme Resort, Genesee Country Village and Museum, AVI Foodsystem, Inc., The Campus Shop, GCC Student Activities Office, and The New Courier.
First-prize winner Leanne Serrato is a nontraditional aged student at the college who has returned to GCC to further her education. She has already earned a BS degree in Zoology and a master's degree in Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Arizona State University. She aspires to enroll in GCC's Nursing program, building on her existing knowledge base.
"My ultimate goal is to combine nursing with my background in education," she said.
Leanne wrote "Wisdom of Water" in the '90s when she was taking a lot of science classes.
"I used to try to learn concepts such as chemical bonding in terms of human relationships to better understand them," she said. "This particular poem I wrote after becoming tired of hearing my friends constantly complain about unhealthy relationships they were in, yet they wouldn't change anything.
"One of my friends was actually planning her life around a guy she really didn't love and that inspired this poem."

At a ceremony preceding the last lecture in the Civil War Lecture Series at Genesee Community College last week, the winners of the essay contest were announced to a packed audience.
Seven students were recognized for essays on the topic, "What did/does the Civil War mean for American Identity?"
At the event, instructor Derek Maxfield noted the fine quality of all of the entries. In fact, five of the entries garnered first-place votes. Students receiving honorable mention included: Nicholas Pitcher, Brady Hawkes, Gabe Necoechea and Jessica Hollister – all four are from North Star Christian Academy in Rochester. Third place went to Matthew Sisto, second place to John Cole – both also from North Star Christian Academy, and first place was awarded to Sarah Lawson. Lawson is a homeschooled student from the Batavia area.
GCC Bookstore Manager Christopher Sackett was on hand to make the awards. Sackett and Barnes & Noble Booksellers generously donated gift cards of $100 for the first-place winner, $50 cards for the second- and third-place winners, as well as water bottles with the GCC logo. In addition to the first three places, four honorable mentions were recognized.
"In short, we thoroughly enjoyed the series," Maxfield said. "The folks who attended were enthusiastic, well-read and eager for us to continue offering a lecture series of this kind. Many even asked for copies of the lectures, which we are looking into."

Caton is a licensed psychologist certified by the State of New York and has completed a doctoral program in Counseling Psychology at the University of Buffalo. Providing psychotherapy to children and adults is the primary focus of her Oakfield practice.
A Sheriff's Deputy reports that a transformer is arcing "pretty good" about an eighth of a mile west of Route 19 in Bergen. That's in the proximity of 8262 Sackett Road.
A kitchen grease fire was reported in the rear of the residence at 111 Liberty St. in the City of Batavia and its fire crews responded. Smoke was showing when they arrived, but the blaze was quickly extinguished.
The building was evacuated. Two people suffered second-degree burns, according to responders.
An ambulance is en route.
The location is between Central Avenue and Cherry Street.
UPDATE 9:24 p.m.: A Mercy Medic unit is called.
UPDATE 9:43 p.m.: City Ladder 15 is returning to quarters. Mercy Squad 2 is back in service. The burn victims have been transported to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
