Two Batavia medical offices link to health-info tech system

Nearly 400 medical practices throughout the eight counties of Western New York have joined HEALTHeLINK, using health information technology for secure access to their patients’ medical information immediately at the point of care.

Batavia Pediatrics and Lamb Family Practice, both in Batavia, are the latest practices to join HEALTHeLINK.

This is a collaborative effort among Western New York hospital systems, health plans, physician practices, and other health care organizations to share and access clinical information about their patients in efficient ways to improve the delivery of care, enhance outcomes, and help control health care costs through the reduction of duplicate tests and medication errors.

Through HEALTHeLINK, a physician has immediate electronic access to patient data, including lab and radiology reports, prescriptions, and more. Patients allow physicians and other authorized clinical professionals to access their health information by signing a consent form.

Managing attorney for Batavia law office reelected as president of banking association

Deborah Gallo, the managing attorney of Rosicki, Rosicki & Associates Western New York Office in Batavia, has been reelected president of the Western New York Banking and Credit Association (WNYMBCA) for a sixth term.

She has earned the important distinction of serving as president for the most number of terms in the history of this organization.

Members of the WNYMBCA include bankers, servicers, brokers, vendors, attorneys and other prominent community professionals. The WNYMBCA provides education, legislative information, and networking opportunities in the Western New York region including the areas of Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse.

As the longest-serving president in the history of the WNYMBCA, Gallo has amassed an impressive number of achievements and a solid record of service for the organization and the Western New York area.

As a junior partner and the managing attorney of Rosicki, Rosicki & Associates, P.C., Gallo has helped facilitate numerous volunteer opportunities for the law firm's staff members to give back to the Batavia, Buffalo are Rochester communities.

Since 2004, Rosicki, Rosicki & Associates have coordinated an annual gala to benefit the Hunter’s Hope Foundation and raise money for Krabbe Disease and other leukodystrophies. Gallo and her staff members not only plan the annual fundraiser but also serve as event staff throughout the evening.

In addition to her dedication to the Hunter’s Hope Foundation, she also established teams of employees from the Batavia Office of Rosicki, Rosicki & Associates to participate in the walkathon to benefit multiple sclerosis and The Buffalo News Kids Day. For the latter, RR&A staff members sold special edition newspapers to benefit Variety, the Children’s Charity, Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, the Robert Warner MD Center for Children with Special Needs and Children’s Charities of Western New York.

Gallo is a graduate of Pace University School of Law in White Plains, and she received her undergraduate degree from Iona College in New Rochelle. She is a member of the New York State Bar Association, Monroe County Bar Association, and Erie County Bar Association.

Byron citizen soldier reenlists in NY Army National Guard

Major General Patrick A. Murphy, the adjutant general of the New York Army National Guard, announced that Staff Sergeant Charles Jensen, from Byron, has reenlisted to continue service with the Company A, 2-108th Infantry.

"Over the past three years, the New York Army National Guard has come from far below authorized strength to 100-percent strength," Murphy said. "Our priority is to provide ready forces for both state and federal missions and readiness starts with maintaining our strength."

"We have more than 16,000 men and women in the Army and Air National Guard with each individual member having an important role."

YWCA offers free 'empowerment' workshops on Tuesdays

The YWCA of Genesee County will offer free workshops this autumn beginning Tuesday, Sept. 18. Say YES to the Y(WCA) E(mpowerment) (S)eries).

If you're a fan of Greek-style yogurt, like throwing great parties, want well-behaved dogs and have healthy teeth, then you won't want to miss out!

Each workshop will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Y, located at 301 North St. in Batavia.

Sept. 18

Learn how to make yogurt with Trystan Sandvoss of First Light Farm & Creamery. There will be materials available for purchase o that you can start making your own tangy, Greek-style yogurt right away!

Sept. 25

Get some tips on how to make your dog behave during walks, with company, and in your home. Trainer Thomas Purcell will offer demonstrations and he invites participants to bring their dogs (must have a copy of rabies certificate).

Oct. 2

Enchanted Florist owner Kathleen Anna-Gonzalez will offer ways to decorate and plan for a fabulous party, whether for a birthday, wedding, Christmas or any other occasion.

Oct. 9

Dental expert Ellie Phillips will talk about the familiar and not-so-well-known ways to keep your teeth and gums in excellent health.

Plus, there are other exciting topics coming up, including how to organize your clutter, transition from one career to another, and map out a solid plan for New Year's wellness.

Visit an alpaca farm during National Alpaca Farm Days

National Alpaca Farm Days are Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29-30. Genesee County has six alpaca farms and this would be the perfect time to visit.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tour a farm, view live demonstrations, learn about raising and breeding alpacas and purchase one-of-a-kind alpaca products. Fun for the whole family!

School bus and big rig collide on West Main Street Road

A school bus and a tractor-trailer have collided at 3299 W. Main St. Road. The school bus is on its side. Injuries unknown. There is one student and the bus driver and they are both out of the vehicle. East Pembroke Fire Department is responding along with Mercy EMS. Oakfield and Darien are asked to stand by in quarters along with Town of Batavia firefighters. Mercy Flight is put on standby. This is west of Wortendyke Road.

UPDATE 12:16 p.m.: Wortendyke at Route 5 is closed, along with Route 5 at Hopkins Road. Sheriff's deputies are rerouting traffic until fire police can respond. Mercy Flight will not be needed. The Pembroke school district has already called a tow truck for the bus.

UPDATE 12:18 p.m.: The semi's driver is also out of his vehicle. Response from Oakfield, Darien and Town of Batavia is cancelled.

UPDATE 12:22 p.m.: The two adults will be sign-offs. There is one pediatric patient to be transported to the hospital.

UPDATE 12:29: "Until we get the bus on its wheels, the road's going to be closed for awhile." Meanwhile, truck traffic is backing up. A State Trooper is responding to the scene.

UPDATE 12:43 p.m.: The child is being taken to UMMC.

UPDATE 1:35 p.m.: The roadway is reopened. All units clear.

Gunshots heard in area of Howard Street

The sound of three gunshots was heard off Howard Street in the city. Police are checking the grounds of Graham Manufacturing to see what's going on. The location is off Harvester Avenue and the cemetery.

Breaking: Heavy drill press stolen from Jackson Street and put on big garbage truck

Attention citizens! Police are on the scout for a large blue garbage truck with a heavy drill press in the back of it. The drill press was allegedly stolen about 20 minutes ago from 35 Jackson St. in the City of Batavia. According to the caller, the truck pulled up, winched up the drill press, put it on the big blue garbage truck and left. The caller then contacted the landlord and was told no permission was given to anyone to remove the equipment. So, the dispatcher said, "If you see a blue garbage truck, look for a drill press in the back." Then call the cops. The Thruway Authority is being notified to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

UPDATE 10:47 a.m.: No direction of travel was given and no information about whether there are any graphics -- lettering -- on the truck. There were a lot of blue garbage trucks making their rounds in the city today. The disposal service in Orleans County uses blue trucks, too, and if this vehicle was stolen from that company, an officer says dispatch should expect to be getting a call from them.

UPDATE 10:59 a.m.: The truck with the heavy drill press in back has been located. It's a PSI garbage truck, which will be returning to 35 Jackson St. to put back the drill press. The driver told authorities "he thought the item was trash because it was sitting next to the Dumpster." (Well, it's still bulk item pickup time in the city -- at least until Oct. 1.) Police are going to meet the driver on Jackson Street.

Police are responding to a complaint of children playing in the street at Grandview Terrace and Clinton Street in the City of Batavia.

Brush fire off Warsaw Road, Le Roy

A brush fire is reported in the woods by 9450 Warsaw Road. Le Roy Fire Department is responding. The location is between Perry and Cole roads.

UPDATE 3:18 p.m.: A responder on scene says it's a hedgerow on fire in the middle of a field.

UPDATE 3:27 p.m.: A fire truck from Pavilion is asked to respond to the scene in non-emergency mode.

UPDATE 3:56 p.m.: The fire is out. Crews are doing overhaul. A rep from the Department of Environmental Conservation is on scene.

Two-car crash with injuries at Washington and Porter in the city

A two-car accident with two injured victims is reported at Washington and Porter avenues in the city. It is blocking traffic. Mercy medics and law enforcement are on scene and firefighters are responding.

UPDATE 12:03 p.m.: A female is being taken to UMMC with a complaint of right ankle pain.

UPDATE 12:10 p.m.: A 37-year-old female is also going to UMMC with complaints of tenderness in her abdomen and on her face. There was air-bag deployment in her vehicle and she was seat belted.

UPDATE 12:48 (by Howard): A witness, Leonard Johnson, said he saw the PT Cruiser trying to make a left-hand turn from Porter Avenue onto Washington and the Ford Focus hit the Cruiser. He said it was a pretty hard impact. "It wasn't a good accident," he said.

Police searching for guy who allegedly stole a cartload of beer from Tops

Police are responding to Batavia Commons to search for a man who allegedly stole a whole grocery cart of beer from Tops Market. The suspect is white and wearing a football jersey. He has a red car, possibly a Firebird.

UPDATE 2:22 p.m.: The car is now believed to be maroon in color. The driver is further described as wearing a blue jersey with the number 5 on the back, denim shorts and white sneakers. He's with a female who is supposedly barefooted.

Fire alarm in Spruce Hall at College Village

A fire alarm has sounded in Spruce Hall at College Village. Town of Batavia firefighters are responding. The address is 8170 Batavia-Stafford Townline Road.

UPDATE 9:02 p.m.: Firefighters on scene report "nothing showing."

UPDATE 9:06 p.m.: The chief says a second unit should search the center of the building for burnt food. "Looks like they were fryin' food a little too hot," says a firefighter. They've checked Room 206 and found nothing, but then checked G105 and found evidence of smoke. "It seems to be coming from the heater, but the heater hasn't been turned on for several hours."

UPDATE 9:27 p.m.: The alarm is deemed unfounded. Town of Batavia is back in service.

Female 'jumped' at Jackson and Dawson in the city

A caller tells dispatch his girlfriend was "jumped" about 15 minutes ago by a man near Jackson Street and Dawson Place. The suspect then ran into some bushes. He is described as black, with a "salt and pepper goatee," wearing black shorts and a black sweatshirt. Police are searching for him now.

UPDATE 12:25 p.m.: The suspect was last seen headed eastbound on the railroad tracks. Mercy medics are responding to the scene for the victim's possible shoulder injury.

UPDATE 12:46 p.m.: The 24-year-old victim is very distressed and is being transported to UMMC complaining of shoulder pain and experiencing an anxiety attack.

John Kennedy Intermediate School invites families and students to Community Night

John Kennedy Intermediate School will be hosting its annual Community Night on from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14 in the gymnasium.

Last year 23 businesses/associations participated. This free event is sponsored by the John Kennedy Parent Group and it's their first event of the year – where students and their parents are welcomed back to JK, along with new students and their families.

Parents are encouraged to bring their family and enjoy free pizza in the cafeteria and then head down to the gym for some games and information from the local organizations and businesses. The school is located at 166 Vine St. in the city.

A deputy is responding to a lock out at the Flying J in Pembroke. The car is sporting the Batman emblem.
