Today, cell phone distracted driving survivor advocate Jacy Good spoke at Elba High School to help students understand the consequences of using cell phones behind the wheel.

In May 2008, on the day she graduated from college, a driver distracted by his cell phone conversation ran a red light and caused a crash that killed both of Good’s parents and left her clinging to life.

“Jacy’s story is powerful and moves both students and faculty,” said Chris Salinas, principal at Elba. “It is especially important for teens to hear Jacy’s message. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, and using cell phones increases crash risk. Jacy’s story helps students understand that they will be safer if they disconnect while driving.”

“My college graduation day should have been a time to celebrate,” Good said. “Instead, my entire world was shattered because of an unnecessary cell phone call. People need to understand the dangers of using a cell phone ­– handheld or hands free – while driving. Lives are at risk and poor decisions can have lifelong consequences.”

After the loss of her parents, Good joined FocusDriven – Advocates for Cell-Free Driving. FocusDriven is a survivor advocate network that supports cell phone distracted driving victims and their families. Individuals and families educate the public by sharing their personal stories. The New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee works with FocusDriven to provide Good’s presentations in schools across the state.

A minor-injury accident is reported at Gulf and Church roads in the Town of Le Roy. Law enforcement is en route. Le Roy Fire Department is on scene.

UPDATE 8:20 p.m.: The Le Roy assignment is back in service.

Two nearly simultaneous car accidents require the response of both the Pembroke and Indian Falls fire departments, along with Corfu and mutual aid from Darien.

At 7:07 p.m. a car-into-house accident, with injuries, was reported at 721 Akron Road. The side porch was "completely taken out and there is substantial damage to the vehicle," according to a responder.

This may connected to a just-prior accident at 878 Gabbey Road where a car reportedly went off the road and there are injuries. The pickup truck involved is said to have fled the scene.

A responder said he was nearly hit head on by the pickup truck believed to be the same one which left the Gabbey Road incident.

Darien Fire Department is requested to aid in shoring up the residence that was struck on Akron Road, wherein one person suffered a hand laceration.

7:35 p.m.: One person is being loaded into a Mercy rig for hospital transport. The natural gas fuel provider is called to the scene since the house that was struck had its gas on at the time of impact.

7:55 p.m.: One person was taken to ECMC. National Grid was also called to the scene.

A two-vehicle accident with minor injuries is reported in front of Wendy's restaurant on West Main Street. City police, fire and Mercy medics are on scene.

UPDATE 12:35 p.m.: Mercy medics transported a 46-year-old female to UMMC. She complains of lower abdominal pain. Responders are back in service.

A suspicious condition is reported at Wolcott School in the Village of Le Roy. A person is scanning the front lawn with a metal detector. Maybe there's buried treasure in the grass. Or some lost lunch money -- it adds up you know.

Le Roy Police spoke with him. No report was taken and the police just left.

The Oakfield-Alabama Middle/High School faculty, students and administration would like to extend an invitation to all veterans in the area to attend a Veteran’s Day Celebration ceremony at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, in the High School Gymnasium. The school is located at 7001 Lewiston Road in Oakfield.

We will be honoring the veterans with music by the band and chorus. Each veteran will be asked to complete a short biography form so that he/she may be introduced to the audience. The veterans will spend some time sharing with the students, and be given lunch prepared by our students.

The afternoon will include spending time in the Elementary school where another celebration prepared by the elementary students will take place.

On Saturday, Oct.19th and 26th, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the Batavia Cemetery Association will host its annual guided Candlelight Ghost Walk through the Historic Batavia Cemetery on Harvester Avenue. The guided tours will feature some of the famous and infamous characters who shaped our community.

Guests will meet some of the men and women of Batavia who, for various reasons, exerted great influence in their day. Dean and Mary Richmond and Joseph Ellicott will tell the stories of their interesting lives and very powerful families; William Morgan may finally reveal his fate after he threatened to expose Masonic secrets and one Confederate ghost will tell why he should be buried in Macon, Ga. Mrs. Hunt will share the moving story of the two sons lost in the Civil War and visitors will be asked to help discover the name of the unidentifed murdered woman.

Fortunes will be told and futures revealed by a visiting Gypsy!

Tours begin at 7 p.m. and run every 15 minutes until 8:30 p.m. Admission is $10 and includes refreshments. Tickets are available at the gate the day of the event at the cemetery or by calling 343-0248. Reservations are recommended.

Proceeds benefit the upkeep and restoration of the cemetery.

A fully involved car fire, with flames shooting out of the front end, is reported at 14 Lake St. in the Village of Le Roy near Bacon Street. Le Roy Fire Department is responding. It is said to have exposure potential to nearby structures and the surrounding homes have been evacuated.

UPDATE 12:56 p.m.: The fire is knocked down.

A motorcycle accident, with minor injuries, is reported at Lewiston and Galloway roads. Mercy medics and Town of Batavia Fire Department are called to respond.

Sometimes the best laid plans go awry. A canine who lives at 24 Bacon St. in Le Roy thought the time was ripe to make his great escape only moments ago. Everything seemed to be lining up in his or her favor. And so the dog tried to jump from a second-story window onto the porch below, then ostensibly freedom beyond. But an astute neighbor may have foiled the plan by calling dispatch and alerting law enforcement. A police officer is responding.

In January 2001, Genesee County launched the ProAct Prescription Discount Card for its residents. By partnering with ProAct, Genesee County is one of the many counties across the country that has been able to provide its residents -- regardless of age or income -- affordable access to prescription medications. Every prescription receives a discount, including some pet medications.

When visiting the pharmacy, simply show the pharmacist/pharmacist technician the discount card and you can anticipate saving an average of 10-20 percent off name-brand medications and 20-70 percent off generic medications. Resident can visit the discount card Web site at www.NYRxDiscountCard.com to locate the nearest participating pharmacy as well as check the cost of their medications.

"This discount card provides every resident who uses it, regardless of age or income, the opportunity to save on prescriptions medications," said Mary Pat Hancock, chair of the Genesee County Legislature. "We encourage every resident to keep their card on hand and to take advantage of the money-saving program whenever possible."

Residents of Genesee County utilized the discount card to fill more than 26,000 prescriptions and collectively saved more than $1 million since the start of the program. The ProAct Prescription Discount Card Program is completely free for the county and residents. Discount cards have been provided to county offices including the Department of Social Services, the Health Department, the County Office Building and to all participating pharmacies.

The Genesee County Sheriff's Office received a report last evening from the Le Roy Country Club that a golfer had found a dune buggy in the weeds off hole #3 with the keys in it. Deputies recovered a two-seat, black and red, 2011 Kandi 150cc ATV/dune buggy in excellent condition however, it would not start. The location was near railroad tracks that run through the area. At this time the owner is unknown. Anyone having information as to the owner is asked to call the Genesee County Sheriff's Office at 585-343-5000.

City police are in the parking lot by JCPenney, tasked with locating a 2008 black vehicle out of compliance with the law. "Our caller feels the need to inform us that (it) has an expired inspection sticker," says the dispatcher.

An accident is reported on the westbound Thruway at mile marker 384.4. Le Roy fire and ambulance are responding. Injuries are said to be minor. Traffic is backing up. "Sounds like a truck was stopped on the shoulder of the road and a vehicle may have rear-ended it," says a dispatcher.

UPDATE 6:47 p.m.: A responder says one passenger is "sitting up but is disoriented."

A two-car accident, with one person complaining of abdominal pain, is reported at Town Line Road and South Lake Road in Bergen. It is blocking traffic. Mercy and Bergen ambulances and Bergen fire are responding. Two others in the accident are minors and need to be evaluated.

UPDATE 6:45 p.m.: About 15 minutes ago, Bergen ambulance transported one patient to South Lake Hospital in Brockport.

UPDATE 7:10 p.m.: Medics are back in service with two sign offs.
