Officer finds dogs locked inside several vehicles at Walmart

A caller to dispatch reported two dogs locked in a vehicle with the windows up near the food entrance at Walmart. The caller was concerned because they were panting. An officer responded and found several vehicles in that vicinity with dogs locked inside.

Bergen woman charged with felony DWI after early morning accident

Kassandra Ryan Funk, of Acton Road, Bergen, was charged with two felony counts of driving while intoxicated following a property damage accident at 1:35 a.m. today on North Bergen Road in the Town of Bergen.

The 21-year-old was arrested on felony charges of having previously been convicted of DWI within the last 10 years and aggravated DWI for an alleged BAC of .18 or more. In addition, she is charged with refusal to take breath test, failure to keep right, and leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

Funk is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges at 5 p.m. on June 4 in Bergen Town Court. The accident was investigated by Sheriff's Deputy Joseph Corona, assisted by Deputy Jason Saile.

Driver who allegedly left scene of rollover accident in Byron cited

A rollover accident involving a 2001 Ford pickup truck was discovered by a deputy at 5:41 a.m. Monday morning in the Town of Byron.

The truck, allegedly driven by 20-year-old Jeremy S. Geisler, of South Swan Street, Batavia, was traveling northbound on Route 237 when it reportedly went off the east shoulder of the roadway. It then struck a guide rail, tumbled down an embankment and over a creek, striking several trees before coming to rest on its wheels, according to the accident report of Deputy Frank Bordonaro.

The officer came across the accident scene while on patrol and found the vehicle unoccupied and no one was around.

After investigating, Geisler was cited for allegedly moving from lane unsafely and leaving the scene of an accident without reporting it.

POSTPONED: Yancey's Fancy annual cheese tent sale, new date is Sept. 13

The annual cheese tent sale at Yancey’s Fancy, Inc., is being postponed until autumn due to construction delays and safety concerns. Instead of its original date of May 10th, it will take place to Sept. 13th. The hours will remain the same (8 a.m. till sold out) and it will be held at Yancey’s Fancy headquarters on Main Road, Corfu.

Vote on Richmond Memorial Library budget and trustee election is today until 9 p.m.

Richmond Memorial Library's budget vote and trustee election takes place today (Tuesday, May 6) until the library closes at 9 p.m. Voting takes place in the library's Gallery Room. The library is located at 19 Ross St. in the City of Batavia.

Any registered voter residing in the Batavia City School district is eligible to vote.

Charles Matthew Glidden

Charles Matthew Glidden, 51 died unexpectedly April 24th at his home in Sanford, North Carolina.

Charlie was born March 5th 1963 in Batavia and was the son of Sawyer Glidden and Dorothy Clay Glidden.

He was a graduate of Batavia High School, Monroe Community College and North Carolina State, were he received his Nuclear Medicine Technician Certification.

Charlie loved his profession, his music and humor. He was a bass player in a number of bands in his lifetime and was playing in two at the time of his death.

He was preceded in death by his father, Sawyer, and his brother, Andy. Survivors include his son, Matthew Ryan Glidden of Fort Sill, Oklahoma; his mother Dorothy, his brothers John (Moira) and Jim (Denise), all of the Batavia area and his nieces Sarah and Emily Glidden.

In honor of Charlie, please tell your friends and family that you love them. A memorial service will be held at Genesee County Park on Saturday May 10th starting at 1 p.m. in Area D -- rain or shine.

Hazardous ducklings waddling across Main Street Downtown

Ducklings waddling across Main Street are creating a dangerous condition. They are by the City Centre. Authorities are responding.

UPDATE 11:27 a.m.: An animal control officer is called to rein in the fowl.

UPDATE 11:36 a.m.: The ducklings, led by Mom, marched straight into the Tonawanda Creek on their own and in their own good time.

Possible electrical fire inside house on Ellicott Street Road

A possible electrical fire is reported inside the residence at 6173 Ellicott Street Road. Pavilion and Le Roy fire departments are responding. The location is at the corner of Transit Road.

UPDATE 11:11 a.m.: National Grid is called to the scene.

UPDATE 11:56 a.m.: National Grid is there now.

UPDATE 12:18 p.m.: The assignment is back in service.

Le Roy grad newest deputy with Sheriff's Office

The Genesee County Sheriff Office recently hired Joseph D. Loftus to fill the position of Deputy Sheriff; a position that was left vacant by a Deputy Sheriff who was promoted to Sergeant earlier in the year.

Deputy Loftus is a 1997 graduate from Le Roy High School. Following high school, Deputy Loftus earned a bachelor of science degree in Criminal Justice, graduating cum laude, from Brockport State College.

Deputy Loftus was previously employed by Le Roy Police Department and McNeil/AECOM Security. Deputy Loftus recently graduated from the Rural Police Training Academy at Genesee Community College in March and and was Captain of his class.

Sheriff Maha stated, Deputy Loftus has been participating in our 14-week field-training program and is performing exceptionally well. He will be a great addition to our road patrol.

GC Sheriff's Office hires two new corrections officers

The Genesee County Sheriff's Office recently filled two vacant correction officer positions with the hiring of East Bethany resident Jeremy J. Cypress and Bergen resident Jason E. Johnston.

The two correction officers graduated in a class of 15 from the Niagara County Basic Corrections five-week Academy earlier this year. Officer Cypress was the Class President.

Training included instruction in the care and custody of inmates, inmate supervision, defensive tactics, firearms training and other topics pertaining to corrections.

Sheriff Gary T. Maha stated, "Correction officers Cypress and Johnston will be great assets to the jail."

GC Master Gardeners annual Spring Gala is May 17 - plant sale, chance auction, and more

Genesee County Master Gardeners will be hosting their annual Spring Garden Gala on Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County, 420 E. Main St. in Batavia.

There will be a plant sale featuring outdoor and indoor plants (many grown by Master Gardeners), geraniums and a Chance Basket Auction. Bring in a soil sample from your garden for free soil pH testing. Master Gardeners will be available to answer your gardening questions.

There will also be a terrarium demonstration at 11 a.m. and a container gardening demonstration at noon.

Corfu man gets 10-year prison sentence for distributing child porn

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr. announced Thursday that David Woods, 37, of Corfu, who was convicted of distribution of child pornography, was sentenced to 120 months (10 years) in prison by U.S. District Court Judge Richard J. Arcara.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Carol G. Bridge, who handled the case, stated that Woods used an online bulletin board system designed for viewing and sharing images and videos of child pornography. Using the e-mail address jailbaitlover143@gmail.com, the defendant collected and distributed over 12,000 videos and 20,000 images of child pornography. Many of the images portrayed children, including infants and toddlers, being subjected to bondage and rape by adults.

On March 6, 2012, the defendant uploaded eight videos depicting young female victims. On the bulletin board, Woods stated “I hope this gets me into VIP, but even if it doesn’t, I figured I would share.” On April 17, 2013, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at the defendant’s residence and seized a laptop and other digital equipment containing the images of child pornography.

The sentencing is the result of an investigation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge James C. Spero.

Man indicted on four felony counts after allegedly putting Deputy Brian Thompson at 'grave risk of death'

These are the latest indictments issued by the Genesee County Grand Jury.

Scott A. Kopper is indicted on first-degree assault, a Class B violent felony. It is alleged that on Jan. 8 in the Town of Pembroke, with intent to cause serious injury to another person, he caused injury to such person or to a third person, in this case Sheriff's Deputy Brian Thompson, by means of a dangerous instrument -- a vehicle. In count two, Kopper is accused of the crime of reckless endangerment, 1st, a Class D felony. It is alleged that on the same day, "under circumstances evincing a depraved indifference to human life," he recklessly engaged in conduct which created a grave risk of death to another person by closing the window of his vehicle thereby trapping Deputy Thompson's arm, and started to drive away, dragging Deputy Thompson with him. In count three, Kopper is accused of second-degree assault, also a Class D felony, for acting with intent to prevent a police officer from performing a lawful duty, causing physical injury to such person, Deputy Thompson. In count four, Kopper is accused of second-degree assault, another Class D felony, for allegedly intending to cause physical injury to another person, and causing injury to such person, Deputy Thompson, by means of a dangerous vehicle -- a vehicle.

Antonio A. Ayala and Ashley L. Alvord are indicted on drug-related charges stemming from contact with law enforcement on Nov. 19 in the Town of Bergen. Ayala is indicated for the crime of criminal possession of a controlled substance, 3rd, a Class B felony, for allegedly knowingly and unlawfully possessing a narcotic drug, cocaine, with intent to sell it. In count two, Alvord is indicated for the crime of criminal possession of a controlled substance, 4th, a Class C felony, for allegedly knowingly and unlawfully possessing one or more preparations, compounds, mixtures or substances with an aggregate weight of one-eighth ounce or more. In count three, both Ayala and Alvord, are accused of endangering the welfare of a child, a Class A misdemeanor, for allegedly knowingly acting in a manner likely to be injurious to the physical, mental or moral welfare of child less than 17 years old, in this case a 4-year-old child.

Alissa A. Fodge is indicted for third-degree grand larceny, a Class D felony, for allegedly stealing property valued in excess of $3,000 from a convenience store in the Town of Bergen between Aug. 19 and Oct. 16. The value of the property is about $7,040.

Aaron M. Zastrocky is indicated for driving while intoxicated, a Class E felony, for allegedly driving a 1998 Jeep on South Lake Road in the Town of Le Roy on Dec. 20 while intoxicated. In count two, he is accused of aggrevated driving while intoxicated, also a Class E felony, for having a BAC of .18 or more at the time.

City of Batavia Community Garden Open House is May 10

The City of Batavia Community Garden is hosting an Open House on from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, at 10 MacArthur Drive (behind the Batavia Youth Center).

This a great opportunity for City of Batavia residents to view how a vacant wading pool has been made into the new “City of Batavia Community Garden.” Meet with the garden’s staff and learn more about the efficient “Square Foot Gardening Method.”

There will be refreshments and gardening demonstrations.
