Cows loose and running on Peaviner Road, Alexander

About nine or 10 cows are running loose on Peaviner Road approximately two miles east of Route 98 in Alexander. No farms are really close by says an officer who called the matter into dispatch. "I don't know how long they've been out here or where they came from." After dispatch did some checking, a resident in the area says he has some cows out that way and will go check it out. The officer is no longer on scene.

UPDATE 1:55 p.m.: It is reported that a farmer is with the cows on Old Creek Road but it's not yet known if he owns them.

UPDATE 2:26 p.m.: An officer says the farmer is securing the animals and will be taking them home, 9950 Old Creek Road.

Heavy snow on mobile home roof in Pembroke causing it to sag

The roof of a mobile home on North Lake Road in Pembroke is bowing due to heavy snow on top and the ceiling is creaking, according to a caller to dispatch. The location is Lot #16 inside Antone's Mobile Home Park at 8427 North Lake Road.

Pembroke and Indian Falls fire are responding along with mutual aid from Darien. Heavy equipment, including hydraulic jacks, are requested to the scene.

UPDATE 8:52 p.m.: The assignment is back in service.

Mercy Flight to host 'An Irish Evening' at Terry Hills - baskets, auction items and sponsors wanted

Mercy Flight WNY will host "An Irish Evening" from 5:30-9:30 p.m. on Saturday March 14 at Terry Hills Golf Course Banquet Facility, located at 5122 Clinton Street Road in Batavia. This is a fund-raising event to include an Irish-themed dinner, open and cash bar, 50/50s, Chinese and silent auctions, door prizes and entertainment.

There will be an Irish sit-down dinner, and free wine and beer at the bar from 5:30-6:30. Menu is corned beef and cabbage, soup, salad and dessert. (Alternate dinners for special diets available if requested prior to March 1st.)

Smoke in basement of duplex on Ellsworth Avenue

Smoke is reported in the basement of a duplex at 111 Ellsworth Ave. City fire is reponding. The building has been evacuated. The location is between Columbia and Manhattan avenues.

UPDATE 11:57 a.m.: "Engine 11 on location with nothing showing."

Chimney fire reported on West Bergen Road

A working chimney fire is reported at 8029 W. Bergen Road. The location is between Selden and Randall roads. Le Roy fire and ambulance are responding along with Bergen fire.

UPDATE 10:44 p.m.: The fire is out. A code enforcement officer is on scene. Le Roy ambulance is back in service.

Winter storm warning in effect this weekend - extreme cold, possible wind chill 35 degrees below zero

A winter storm warning has been issued by the National Weather Service in Buffalo, in effect from 7 a.m. Saturday until 6 p.m. Sunday. Expect more snow, blowing snow and extreme cold.

Snow accumulations of three to seven inches are anticipated; winds 20 to 30 mph; visibility near zero at times.

The weather service says there will be a dangerous mix of wintry conditions this weekend. Strong winds along with snow will lead to considerable blowing and drifting snow. Travel will become difficult with snow-covered roads. Heavy snow and/or ice will cause hazardous driving conditions. Be prepared to encounter whiteout conditions.

The combination of extremely cold air and strong winds will create dangerously and possibly life-threatening wind chill values -- as low as 35 degrees below zero at times. "Frostbite times will only be on the order of just minutes." Limit your time outside and dress in multiple layers this weekend.

SUV rollover on Thruway, driver possibly has minor injuries, Le Roy responding

A black SUV rolloved over several times on the eastbound Thruway but the driver has minor, if any, injuries, according to a dispatcher, who is on the phone with the driver. Location is mile marker 380.2; Le Roy fire and ambulance responding.

UPDATE 7:48 a.m.: Command says the crew is actually in the westbound lane; the vehicle is in the median. State Troopers are en route.

UPDATE 8 a.m.: Troopers on scene.

Concrete mix spills onto Ellicott Street, slowing traffic

Northbound Ellicott Street is temporarily closed, with traffic being diverted into the center turn lane, because of a concrete mix spill from a Hanson Aggregates cement truck. The mixture is thin and covers an area about 100 yards long. Hanson workers are cleaning it up.

Free parenting classes offered by Salvation Army

Are you a parent looking for some help in understanding your child or teenager? The Salvation Army of Genesee County is offering a 13-week course which offers practical advice and helpful information on how to promote positive family relationships.

Discussion topics include: rest and comfort, money, emotional stability, talking and listening, setting goals and expectation, and conflict and resolution. The final session focuses on parenting issues faced by single parents. Each session has a short DVD presentation, group discussion, and time to take notes in a workbook.

The sessions are held on Mondays through April 27 from 10 a.m - 12 p.m.; there will be no class on Feb. 16. There is no charge for the classes.

Possibility of roof collapse reported on Macomber Road, Alabama

A "possible impending roof collapse" is reported at 7020 Macomber Road, just south of Judge Road. Alabama fire is responding. The caller reports the roof is leaking and creaking.

UPDATE 12:04 p.m.: A code enforcement officer will be notified and asked to go to the location.

UPDATE 12:08 p.m.: A responder on scene, checking from inside the house, says there is a minor leak in the ceiling.

Structure fire reported on Main Road, Pembroke

Wires are reportedly burning inside the wall of a house at 182 Main Road, Pembroke. The city's fast team, Pembroke and Indian Falls fire departments are to respond along with East Pembroke.

UPDATE 10:37 a.m.: Fire police are to shut down traffic at Route 5 and Main Road.

UPDATE 11:45 a.m.: Fire is out. Remaining units are preparing to clear the scene. Road is reopened. National Grid is notified as well as the tenants, who were not home.

Le Roy student graduate with honors from SUNY Oswego

Courtney M. Brooks, of Le Roy, completed her baccalaureate studies in Public Justice cum laude in December at SUNY Oswego and was recognized at the college's Commencement.

A student who graduates with honors is indicated by the traditional Latin phrases summa cum laude, with highest honor (grade averages of 3.8 to 4.0); magna cum laude, with great honor (grade averages of 3.6 to 3.79); and cum laude, with honor (grade averages of 3.30 to 3.59).

Chamber hosts small business marketing workshop on Wednesday morning, RSVP

“Marketing Your Small Business” will be the subject of a small business workshop to be hosted the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, Feb. 11.

This is the first in a series of business workshops for 2015 held in conjunction with the United States Small Business Administration and the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce. The workshops are open to all Chamber and non-Chamber businesses and their employees and will offer expert advice from experienced business professionals designed to help small businesses succeed and grow.

“Marketing is a critical component to every small business’s survival,” said Tom Turnbull, chamber president. “In this workshop, participants will learn and understand the marketing mix, how to develop a marketing plan, the importance of marketing research and segmentation, as well as defining the business’s target market.”

All workshops will be held at the Chamber of Commerce office, 210 E. Main St., Batavia. The sessions will run from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Businesses may attend any one or all of the workshops. Cost for non-Chamber members is $10 for each attendee. Chamber members may attend all sessions free of charge but must make reservations to insure space for their employees.

Allens food processing in Oakfield evacuated due to strong odor of natural gas

The Allens food processing plant in Oakfield is being evacuated because of a strong odor of natural gas coming from behind the building. The plant manager tells dispatch there's a main gas pipeline behind the facility, located at 40 Stevens St. in the village. Oakfield fire is responding, along with mutual aid from Alabama. Winds are north/northeast at 15 mph.

UPDATE 2:15 p.m.: National Fuel has been notified. No ETA given.

UPDATE 2:33 p.m.: The fuel line has been shut off.

Car wreck, unknown injuries, on westbound Route 490, Bergen responding

A motor-vehicle accident, unknown injuries, is reported on the westbound Route 490 by the Bergen exit, in the median. Bergen fire and Mercy medics responding.

UPDATE (1:14 p.m.): It's a van and it's in a snow bank.

UPDATE (1:19 p.m.): No injuries, according to medics on scene.
