The "possible eminent collapse of a roof" is reported at 493 Bloomingdale Road on the Reservation. At the rear of the building, the ceilings are quite bowed and water is leaking in, says the caller. Alabama fire is dispatched to investigate.

Mardi Gras merriment at Batavia Health Care Center

The folks at Batavia Health Care Center held a Mardi Gras party last week. The celebrants enjoyed bonhomie, music and good food. The room was decorated for a nice party.

"Everyone had a great time and left with fun bellies!" said activities director Jillian Barnes.

Three local students named Presidential Scholars at Potsdam University

The following local students have been named Presidential Scholars for the Fall 2014 semester at Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY:

  • Patrick Flynn, of Batavia, a junior majoring in aeronautical engineering and mechanical engineering;
  • Breanna Johnson, of Corfu, a freshman majoring in biology;
  • Andrew Lichtenthal, of Batavia, a junior majoring in aeronautical engineering and mechanical engineering.

Five local students earn spot on dean's list at St. Bonaventure University

Second annual Elba Central School Alumni Reunion set for June 6th - Get the word out

Last June we held the first Elba Alumni Reunion with more than 160 people attending. It was a wonderful success and we are not planning a second reunion. This is open to ALL Elba alumni or to anyone who ECS for several years and would like to see former classmates and friends again.

This year’s reunion will again be held at the Elba Firemen's Recreation Hall on Saturday, June 6th. It is located at 7143 Oak Orchard Road.

There will be a social hour at 5 p.m. with a buffet dinner at 6 preceded by appetizer and brunch. A cash bar will also be available. (A tour of the school at 3:30 p.m. will take place for those who are interested.)

As we are not able to contact all Elba alumni we would ask you to pass this information on.

Annual Batavia Muckdogs Hot Stove Dinner is March 21

The Genesee County Baseball Club will hold its annual Batavia Muckdogs Hot Stove Dinner and Auction on Saturday, March 21st, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Church Hall at 17 Sumner St. in Batavia. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under.

The evening will begin with a cocktail hour followed by a buffet dinner at 5:30. The Hot Stove Dinner is a time for good food, friendship and baseball talk. The night also features silent and live auctions of baseball-related memorabilia (including signed bats and balls), work by local artists, and gift certificates from a variety of local businesses.

This year’s dinner will also benefit the Center of Hope, the Batavia VA’s new facility for women veterans.

Tickets may be purchased in Batavia at Dwyer Stadium, Gerace’s Hair Care, the Williams Law Firm, the office of Dr. Alan Barcomb, and State Street Animal Hospital.

Congressman Collins encourages high-schoolers to take part in annual art competition

Congressman Chris Collins encourages local high school students in New York’s 27th District to participate in this year’s Congressional Art Competition.

“Each day, members of Congress and hundreds of visitors to the Capitol walk by the award winning artwork submitted by high school students from around the country,” Collins said. “I look forward to another year with excellent submissions from NY-27 students and the opportunity to welcome our winning artist to Washington this summer.”

Last year there were more than 80 submissions. The winning artist will receive a round-trip flight to Washington, D.C., to see their artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol, where it will be on display for one year.

Now in its 33rd year, the Congressional Art Competition is open to all high school students in New York’s 27th Congressional District. Submissions are due to one of Congressman Collins two district offices by Tuesday, April 7.

A reception and award ceremony will be held on Saturday, April 11, at Genesee Community College in Batavia. Local high schools have been notified regarding contest rules and submission guidelines. Interested students should see their art teacher for details or contact Chris Catt from Congressman Collins’ office at (585) 519-4002.

GCC hosts several events to celebrate the arts

Anyone needing to take the edge off this long winter should head to Genesee Community College for unique opportunities that celebrate the performing arts and visual arts!

SHOWCASE 2015 offers a medley of performances designed to illustrate the diverse and dynamic talent of GCC's students including singing, music, dance and choreography, theatrics and original drama.

Two complete shows are scheduled, Saturday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 1 at 2 p.m. all at the Stuart Steiner Theatre at GCC's Batavia Campus.

In addition, GCC's Fine Arts Committee and Art Club are delighted to present the Third Annual Fine Arts Festival on Thursday, March 5 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Forum of the Batavia Campus. Art enthusiasts, artists of all ages and persuasions and anyone who wants to have fun exploring the visual arts are invited to share this creative opportunity. Experience art by participating in your choice of numerous workshops demonstrating creative endeavors such as drawing, painting, photography, origami, printmaking and much more!

"This year's Fine Arts Festival promises to be the most vibrant and exciting opportunity to explore the visual arts," Maureen (Moi) Dugan, associate professor of Fine Arts and Ceramics, said. "We hope the wider community will join us!" The Fine Arts Festival is free and open to the public.

Another exciting opportunity for local music lovers is the just-announced performance of The Rochester Gay Men's Chorus on Friday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Stuart Steiner Theatre. Since 1982, members of the RGMC have pursued the dream of using music and "harmony of voice to create a harmony of the spirit." Naturalists bring wild birds to ARC Community Center for hands-on learning

We are bringing nature inside with a fun and educational program from Wild Spirit. The program is designed to not only educate, but to spark the interests of the participants. With a visual and hands-on approach to nature education, the naturalists from Wild Spirit are trained to get the participants involved in the lessons.

On Feb. 28, from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m., the Wild Spirit Program will bring in birds such as owls, hawks and falcons for the audience to view and be educated on. The presentation will take place at the ARC Community Center located at 38 Woodrow Road in the City of Batavia.

The program is being sponsored by the Batavia Youth Bureau Youth Connection Program. This event will be fun and is appropriate for the entire family. For more information or to register call the Youth Bureau at 345-6420.

Car crash on westbound Thruway, unknown injuries

A car is on its roof on the westbound Thruway at mile marker 400. It's in the median. Unknown injuries. Pembroke and Indian Falls fire and Mercy medics are responding.

UPDATE 7:03 a.m.: A fire chief on scene reports everyone is out of the vehicle. But there's a language barrier and so the issue of whether there are injuries remains unclear.

UPDATE 7:08 a.m.: A responder on scene reports the location is actually between mile markers 401 and 402.

UPDATE 7:32 a.m.: The location is mile marker 401.8. The assignment is back in service.

Car on its side, blocking traffic on Route 98 north of Batavia Elba TL Road

A car accident is reported on Route 98 north of Batavia Elba Townline Road. The vehicle is on its side in the roadway, blocking traffic. Mercy medics are responding along with Elba fire.

UPDATE 5:30 a.m.: The location is in the area of 7499 Oak Orchard Road. Town of Batavia also responded. Minor injuries reported. One person has been extricated.

UPDATE 5:31 a.m.: Town of Batavia is back in service.

Chimney fire reported on Ledge Road

A chimney fire is reported at 1084 Ledge Road, just east of the Reservation boundary line. Alabama fire is responding.

UPDATE 8:10 p.m.: Fire is out. Alabama assignment is back in service.

Local students named to dean's list at D’Youville College

These students have been named to the D’Youville College dean's list for the Fall 2014 semester.

To qualify for the honor, they must have maintained a quality point average of 3.40 or above for the previous semester. This indicates superior academic performance and becomes a permanent part of the student’s college record.

The students on the dean’s list and those receiving other academic honors will be recognized at D’Youville’s 52nd Annual Honors Convocation on March 4 at Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo beginning at 2 p.m. More than 600 students, family and friends are expected to attend the annual event.

D’Youville College in Buffalo is a private co-ed institution now in its second century with approximately 3,000 students attending the college in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs.

It is a leader in health care education and is ranked No. 1 by Military Times Magazine as a “Best for Vets College.”

Chamber of Commerce offers two tours - China and Thailand/Hong Kong

The Genesee County Chamber of Commerce is offering a tour of China, as well as a tour of Thailand and Hong Kong.

This will be the Chamber’s 11th trip to China with more 1,000 travelers having taken advantage of this unique opportunity to see first-hand how business is done in China while experiencing many of the most famous sightseeing destinations such as the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City. This year’s trip will visit new locations never offered before on previous Chamber China tours.

The China tour will depart on Oct. 14 and return on Oct. 22.

The Thailand and Hong Kong tour is a new offering from the Chamber this year. It is through the same company as the China trip, Citslinc International, and offers the same exceptional value and experience. Travelers will experience the culture, famous landmarks and architectural details that Thailand and Hong Kong have to offer.

The Thailand and Hong Kong tour will depart on Oct. 31 and return Nov. 8.

Both trips include air fare, four and five-star hotel stays, three meals each day, deluxe bus tours, English-speaking tour guides, admission tickets to all tourist spots and airport taxes.

Ithaca College congratulates two local students named to dean's list for Fall 2014

Kaitlin Logsdon, of Batavia, a communication, management and design major in the Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College was named to dean'slist for the Fall 2014 semseter.

Maureen Edwards, of Corfu, a musical theatre major in the School of Humanities and Sciences at Ithaca College was named to dean's list for the Fall 2014 semseter.

From day one, Ithaca College prepares students for success through hands-on experience with internships, research and study abroad. Its integrative curriculum builds bridges across disciplines and uniquely blends liberal arts and professional study. GC Master Gardeners host free lunchtime 'Garden Talk' on first Tuesdays

Join the Genesee County Master Gardeners for their lunchtime garden series called “Garden Talk.”

On the first Tuesday of each month from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m., the Master Gardeners hold an informational workshop focusing on a specific gardening topic. Bring your lunch to the CCE office (420 E. Main St., Batavia) and think spring!

The next session will take place on March 3rd and the topic will be “New Plants for 2015.” We will take a look at a sampling of the new annuals, perennials, vegetables and shrubs that will be hitting the market this year.
