Mercy medics are evaluating a man struck by a car on Elm Street near the 7-11 on the corner of East Main Street, Batavia. He is complaining of side injuries. The vehicle that struck him is no longer on scene. But whether this was a hit-and-run is not clear.
The "possible eminent collapse of a roof" is reported at 493 Bloomingdale Road on the Reservation. At the rear of the building, the ceilings are quite bowed and water is leaking in, says the caller. Alabama fire is dispatched to investigate.
The folks at Batavia Health Care Center held a Mardi Gras party last week. The celebrants enjoyed bonhomie, music and good food. The room was decorated for a nice party.
"Everyone had a great time and left with fun bellies!" said activities director Jillian Barnes.

Last June we held the first Elba Alumni Reunion with more than 160 people attending. It was a wonderful success and we are not planning a second reunion. This is open to ALL Elba alumni or to anyone who ECS for several years and would like to see former classmates and friends again.
This year’s reunion will again be held at the Elba Firemen's Recreation Hall on Saturday, June 6th. It is located at 7143 Oak Orchard Road.

The Genesee County Baseball Club will hold its annual Batavia Muckdogs Hot Stove Dinner and Auction on Saturday, March 21st, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Church Hall at 17 Sumner St. in Batavia. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under.
The evening will begin with a cocktail hour followed by a buffet dinner at 5:30. The Hot Stove Dinner is a time for good food, friendship and baseball talk. The night also features silent and live auctions of baseball-related memorabilia (including signed bats and balls), work by local artists, and gift certificates from a variety of local businesses.
This year’s dinner will also benefit the Center of Hope, the Batavia VA’s new facility for women veterans.

Congressman Chris Collins encourages local high school students in New York’s 27th District to participate in this year’s Congressional Art Competition.
“Each day, members of Congress and hundreds of visitors to the Capitol walk by the award winning artwork submitted by high school students from around the country,” Collins said. “I look forward to another year with excellent submissions from NY-27 students and the opportunity to welcome our winning artist to Washington this summer.”
Last year there were more than 80 submissions. The winning artist will receive a round-trip flight to Washington, D.C., to see their artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol, where it will be on display for one year.
Now in its 33rd year, the Congressional Art Competition is open to all high school students in New York’s 27th Congressional District. Submissions are due to one of Congressman Collins two district offices by Tuesday, April 7.
A reception and award ceremony will be held on Saturday, April 11, at Genesee Community College in Batavia. Local high schools have been notified regarding contest rules and submission guidelines. We are bringing nature inside with a fun and educational program from Wild Spirit. The program is designed to not only educate, but to spark the interests of the participants. With a visual and hands-on approach to nature education, the naturalists from Wild Spirit are trained to get the participants involved in the lessons.
On Feb. 28, from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m., the Wild Spirit Program will bring in birds such as owls, hawks and falcons for the audience to view and be educated on. The presentation will take place at the ARC Community Center located at 38 Woodrow Road in the City of Batavia.
The program is being sponsored by the Batavia Youth Bureau Youth Connection Program. This event will be fun and is appropriate for the entire family. For more information or to register call the Youth Bureau at 345-6420.

A car is on its roof on the westbound Thruway at mile marker 400. It's in the median. Unknown injuries. Pembroke and Indian Falls fire and Mercy medics are responding.
UPDATE 7:03 a.m.: A fire chief on scene reports everyone is out of the vehicle. But there's a language barrier and so the issue of whether there are injuries remains unclear.
UPDATE 7:08 a.m.: A responder on scene reports the location is actually between mile markers 401 and 402.
UPDATE 7:32 a.m.: The location is mile marker 401.8. The assignment is back in service.
A car accident is reported on Route 98 north of Batavia Elba Townline Road. The vehicle is on its side in the roadway, blocking traffic. Mercy medics are responding along with Elba fire.
UPDATE 5:30 a.m.: The location is in the area of 7499 Oak Orchard Road. Town of Batavia also responded. Minor injuries reported. One person has been extricated.
UPDATE 5:31 a.m.: Town of Batavia is back in service.
A chimney fire is reported at 1084 Ledge Road, just east of the Reservation boundary line. Alabama fire is responding.

Tonight’s meeting of the Genesee County 4-H Swine Club has been cancelled, according to Brandie L. Schultz, administrative assistant for Cornell Cooperative Extension.
These students have been named to the D’Youville College dean's list for the Fall 2014 semester.
To qualify for the honor, they must have maintained a quality point average of 3.40 or above for the previous semester. This indicates superior academic performance and becomes a permanent part of the student’s college record.
The students on the dean’s list and those receiving other academic honors will be recognized at D’Youville’s 52nd Annual Honors Convocation on March 4 at Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo beginning at 2 p.m. More than 600 students, family and friends are expected to attend the annual event.
D’Youville College in Buffalo is a private co-ed institution now in its second century with approximately 3,000 students attending the college in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs.
It is a leader in health care education and is ranked No. 1 by Military Times Magazine as a “Best for Vets College.”

The Genesee County Chamber of Commerce is offering a tour of China, as well as a tour of Thailand and Hong Kong.
This will be the Chamber’s 11th trip to China with more 1,000 travelers having taken advantage of this unique opportunity to see first-hand how business is done in China while experiencing many of the most famous sightseeing destinations such as the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City. This year’s trip will visit new locations never offered before on previous Chamber China tours.
The China tour will depart on Oct. 14 and return on Oct. 22.
The Thailand and Hong Kong tour is a new offering from the Chamber this year. It is through the same company as the China trip, Citslinc International, and offers the same exceptional value and experience. Travelers will experience the culture, famous landmarks and architectural details that Thailand and Hong Kong have to offer.
The Thailand and Hong Kong tour will depart on Oct. 31 and return Nov. 8.

Maureen Edwards, of Corfu, a musical theatre major in the School of Humanities and Sciences at Ithaca College was named to dean's list for the Fall 2014 semseter.

The next session will take place on March 3rd and the topic will be “New Plants for 2015.” We will take a look at a sampling of the new annuals, perennials, vegetables and shrubs that will be hitting the market this year.
