House fire at Roanoke and Keller roads, Pavilion, said to be controlled burn

A possible controlled burn of a residence is reported at Roanoke and Keller Road, Pavilion. A state trooper in the area saw a house burning and stopped and talked to people at the site who informed him that they had called authorities to say they were doing a controlled burn there, but Genesee County dispatchers say they have no such record or information. Pavilion fire is responding.

Crash with injuries at Main and Bank downtown Batavia

An accident with injuries is reported at the intersection of Main and Bank streets downtown. City fire and Mercy medics are responding.

UPDATE 1:11 p.m.: Mercy EMS left the scene without transporting any patients.

Field fire on Swamp Road, Bergen

A field fire is reported at 7939 Swamp Road. Bergen fire department is called.

UPDATE 2:17 p.m.: The caller told dispatch he was burning trash and now the blaze is moving toward his neighbor's house.

UPDATE 2:30 p.m.: Mutual aid is requested from Byron, Le Roy and Stafford fire departments. Each is asked to send in a brush truck.

UPDATE 2:43 p.m.: Holley and Churchville were also called and are now put back in service along with Stafford.

UPDATE 3:06 p.m.: The fire is out and the assignment is back in service.

Register for Preschool Storytime Tuesday evenings at Woodward Library

This group is for ages 3-6. Listen to stories and sing songs.  Learn rhymes, fingerplays, and sign language. Tell stories with puppets and the flannel board. Each story time ends with coloring and bubbles.

Registration is required.  Children must be at least 3 by the first session. This session begins Tuesday, April 10 and runs through Tuesday, May 19.

Register for Toddler Time on Monday mornings at Woodward Library

Monday, Apr. 6 - May 16, 2015, 10:30-10:50 a.m.

Toddler Time is a special storytime for children who are 2 years olds and 3 year olds and a caring adult. Spend approximately 20 minutes on Monday mornings listening to stories that feature themes like shapes and colors, singing songs and dancing, coloring, and playing with bubbles. Toddler Time is a fun time to bond over stories and activities and to make new friends. Each session runs 6 – 8 weeks in length and you only have to sign up once.

Child must be at least 2 by the first session and must be accompanied by an adult. This session of Toddler Time begins Monday, April 6 and runs through Monday, May 18.

Crash with injuries and entrapment on Route 490

A motor-vehicle accident with injuries and entrapment is reported on Route 490 in the area of mile marker 1. The entrapped person's vehicle is wedged against a tree. This is on the Bergen/Churchville border. Le Roy fire and ambulance responding along with Bergen fire. Churchville was also dispatched.

Man suffers broken leg in Elba after falling off ladder, Mercy Flight is called

Mercy Flight #5 is called to Drake Street Road is Elba to transport an 80-year-old man with a broken leg. He fell off the ladder from the height of a one-story roof. Elba fire and Mercy medics are on scene. Firefighters will be establishing a landing zone. The location is between the Elba Village line and Weatherwax Road.

Crash at Ellicott and Liberty streets in the city

A two-car accident is reported at Ellicott and Liberty streets. City fire and mercy medics are on scene. Everyone is out of the vehicles. Initially, there was entrapment.

UPDATE 11:29 a.m.: Each vehicle had a driver and passenger; one passenger was transported to UMMC with a head laceration. Northbound traffic is blocked. Police on scene have requested a second ambulance to respond non-emergency mode.

Car fire on eastbound Thruway causing traffic snarl

A car fire with flames showing is reported on the eastbound Thruway at mile marker 394.4 and it is causing a traffic jam. Town of Batavia Fire Department is responding. Traffic is said to be backed up to exit 48A.

UPDATE 4:57 p.m.: Fire is knocked down. Responders en route told to take it easy.

Car vs. pole accident on West Bergen Road

A car vs. pole accident is reported in front of 8152 W. Bergen Road, just south of Selden Road. Le Roy fire and ambulance responding.

UPDATE 2:36 p.m.: Driver not injured.

Accident with injuries on eastbound Thruway, Le Roy fire and ambulance responding

A motor-vehicle accident with injuries is reported on the eastbound Thruway in the area of mile marker 375.6. Le Roy fire and ambulance service responding.

UPDATE 7:42 a.m.: This is near the Ontario Service Center. A trooper is on scene and medics just arrived.

UPDATE 7:45 a.m.: Le Roy Rescue #66 is on scene.

UPDATE 7:49 a.m.: "The Le Roy fire assignment to the New York State Thruway is back in service."

UPDATE 8:30 a.m.: Two patients transported to UMMC.

One-car rollover, minor injuries, on West Bergen Road

A one-car rollover accident is reported at 7770 W. Bergen Road, "just south of the Bergen line." Injuries, if any, are minor. The driver is out and walking. Le Roy fire and ambulance responding.

Crash with injuries at Lockport and Lewiston roads, Alabama

An accident with injuries is reported at the intersection of Lockport and Lewiston roads. Alabama fire and Mercy medics are responding. State Troopers are on scene. One car smashed into a tree.

UPDATE 11:10 p.m.: Troopers report there are no injuries. Alabama fire is told to stand down.

4-H youth compete in regional Horse Extravaganza event

Congratulations to the Genesee County 4-H youth who competed in the 2015 Region II 4-H Horse Extravaganza at Mid Lakes High School in Phelps on Saturday, March 7!

4-H youth from across the region came together to compete in both "4-H Horse Quiz Bowl," in which youth compete as a team in answering horse knowledge based questions and "4-H Horse Hippology," a contest in which youth participate in a written exam, identification of items shown on slides, placing and/or ID of feedstuffs or feed tags, judging, ID stations, and team problems.

Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge now accepting applications for Spring turkey hunting

Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge in Genesee and Orleans counties is accepting applications for Spring turkey hunting. The refuge uses a random drawing to fill the 75 turkey hunting permits available.

Hunters may apply for a permit for one of two season sessions. Session 1 runs from May 1 through May 15 and 50 permits will be issued for this session. Session 2 runs from May 16 through May 31 and 25 permits will be issued for this session.

To be entered in the drawing, interested hunters must obtain a Big/Upland Game Hunt Application form (Form 3-2356).Applications can be requested in person, by phone, mail or by e-mail at iroquois@fws.gov

Click on the link under “Visitor Activities." Applications, along with a $5 non-refundable processing fee, must be received by 4 p.m., March 31, 2015.
