Man succombs to injuries following one-car accident on Shanks Road, Alabama

The Sheriff's Office is investigating a Monday evening accident in the Town of Alabama that claimed the life of a 64-year-old resident of Akron.

Stanley J. Myka, of Bloomingdale Road, was pronounced dead at UMMC after the 2008 PT Cruiser he was driving left the roadway on Shanks Road and struck a utility pole.

No cause for the accident has been determined.

The accident was reported at at 7:16 p.m.

Myka, who reportedly suffered head and internal injuries, was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The investigation is being conducted by Deputy Patrick Reeves and Deputy Kevin McCarthy. Assisting at the scene were the Alabama Volunteer Fire Department, Indian Falls Volunteer Fire Department, Pembroke Volunteer Fire Department, Mercy EMS and Mercy Flight.

Car into pole accident with head injury in Alabama

A motor vehicle struck a pole and a male has a head injury at Shanks and Sand Hill roads -- on the Tonawanda Indian Reservation. Alabama Fire Department and Mercy medics are responding.

UPDATE 7:25 p.m.: "He's bleeding pretty good," says a medic. Mercy Flight is called to the scene. A unit from Indian Falls Fire Department is also requested.

UPDATE 7:25 p.m.: Fire police are told to block traffic at Bloomingdale Avenue and Shanks Road. Pembroke Fire Department is also responding. Mercy Flight has a five-minute ETA.

UPDATE 7:34 p.m.: Responders are working to secure the scene. Mercy Flight will arrive momentarily and hover in the air until it's OK to land. The update from medics to the pilot is that the victim is about 60. He is unconscious, and has head, abdominal and leg injuries. They are still working to extricate the victim.

UPDATE 7:40 p.m.: The patient has been extricated. He was a passenger in the front seat. The landing zone is secure and the bird will land soon.

UPDATE 7:44 p.m.: Mercy Flight is on the ground.

UPDATE 7:46 p.m.: Notifications have already been made to National Grid, which has damages to Pole #7470, and Verizon, which has a cable box there that's above ground and is "completely knocked over."

UPDATE 8:05 p.m.: Mercy Flight is airborne. Not sure of its destination.

UPDATE 8:08 p.m.: Apparently, there is a second victim, presumably the driver. He is also described as being 60-ish and is being being taken to UMMC by ambulance with head trauma and either in cardiac arrest or with a history of cardiac arrest. (CLARIFICATION: There was only one occupant in the vehicle.)

UPDATE 8:15 p.m.: Indian Falls is back in service.

UPDATE 8:30 p.m.: Alabama is back in service.

Law and Order: Man arrested after short foot chase with police

Brett R. Doward, 26, 411 W. Hickory St., East Rochester, is charged with obstructing governmental administration, 2nd, criminal possession of a controlled substance, 7th, and possession of a controlled substance not in it original container. Following a report at 12:06 a.m., Sunday, of a disturbance on Hall Street, Batavia, Batavia PD received the description of a person allegedly involved and the vehicle he allegedly used to leave the scene. Officer Jason Ivison spotted a vehicle matching the description on Ellicott Street. The vehicle fled and pulled into a driveway on Liberty Street. Doward allegedly jumped from the vehicle and ran. After a short foot pursuit, Doward was taken into custody. Doward was released on an appearance ticket. BPD was assisted by the Sheriff's Office and State Police.

A 17-year-old resident of North Main Street, Perry, is charged with petit larceny. The youth is accused of shoplifting from Kmart.

Jeremy Dean Lyons, 27, of Judge Road, Oakfield, is charged with criminal mischief, 3rd, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, 3rd, aggravated unlicensed operation, 3rd and unlicensed operation. During a domestic dispute with his girlfriend, Lyons alleged damaged property and then allegedly took a vehicle without permission and drove the vehicle on a suspended license.

Jeremy Dean Lyons, 27, of Judge Road, Oakfield, is charged with criminal contempt, 2nd. While housed in the Genesee County Jail, Lyons allegedly violated an order of protection by contacting the protected party.

Terri Marisa Doctor, 33, of Council House Road, Basom, is charged with DWI. Doctor was taken into custody on a Town of Pembroke warrant issued in November 2012 for allegedly failing to pay a fine on a DWI convictions. Doctor was jailed on $1,500 bail.

Spencer Todd Grimes, 18, of Goodrich Street, Albion, is charged with trespass. Grimes is reportedly a former employee of Darien Lake who was accused of stealing and barred from the property. Grimes was allegedly on the property Saturday morning.

Nicholas Lamont Santos, 19, of Gillette Road, Albion, is charged with trespass. Santos is reportedly a former employee of Darien Lake who was accused of stealing and barred from the property. Santos was allegedly on the property Saturday morning.

Randy Lee Ridd, 55, of Swamp Road, Byron, is charged with grand larceny, 4th, and trespass. Ridd is accused of trespassing on the property of a business in Bergen and stealing metal plates. Also charged was Corretta Melissa Pitts, 44, of Swamp Road, Byron.

Brandon Monteleon, 20, of 57 Church St., Le Roy, is charged with criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation and harassment. Monteleone was arrested following an alleged disturbance on Church Street between the defendant and another individual.

Daniel S. Platt, 31, of 53 Lake St., Le Roy, is charged with criminal obstruction of breaking or blood circulation and one count of unlawful dealing with a child and harassment, 2nd. Platt is accused of placing his hands around the neck of a victim, causing difficulty breathing. He's also accused of serving alcohol to a person under age 21.

Andrea M. Gray, 34, of 14 Lake St., Apt. #2, Le Roy, is charged with harassment, 2nd, and reckless endangerment, 2nd. Gray reportedly had an argument with an acquaintance on Lake Street. Gray allegedly pushed the victim, causing the victim to fall backward. The victim's head struck a driveway. Gray is also accused of sitting on the victim and pulling the victim's hair. Gray was jailed on $1,000 bail.

Pole down, wires arcing on Knowlesville Road, Alabama

Alabama firefighters are responding to a report of a utility pole down in the roadway, with wires arcing, at 6564 Knowlesville Road. The location is between Lewiston and Ham roads.

UPDATE 12:50 p.m.: The response is cancelled, Alabama is standing down. The dispatcher says "This is a previously reported incident. They are confirmed cable wires. No one wants to claim the pole."

Three-car crash with injuries on Alleghany Road, Alabama

A three-car accident with injuries is reported at 7153 Alleghany Road in Alabama. It's near Bloomingdale Road. Alabama Fire Department, Mercy medics and law enforcement is responding.

UPDATE 6:34 p.m.: The extrication jaws will need to be employed.

UPDATE 6:37 p.m.: A second ambulance is requested, mutual aid, from Oakfield.

UPDATE 7:03 p.m.: Mercy is transporting two patients to Sisters of Charity Hospital in Buffalo.

UPDATE 7:16 p.m.: A 17-year-old boy is being taken to UMMC for evaluation due to his age. He has no complaints of pain. He also has no local relatives.

UPDATE 7:28 p.m.: Alabama is back in service.

Motorcycle wreck at Maltby and Fisher roads, Oakfield

An accident involving a motorcycle is reported at Maltby and Fisher roads in Oakfield. The rider is attempting to leave the scene but the caller is trying to prevent that as he believes the motorcyclist is injured. Oakfield Fire Department and medics are responding.

UPDATE 1:30 p.m.: This was a sign-off. No injuries. The emergency responders are back in service.

Law and Order: Elba man accused of choking, pointing shotgun at victim

Todd Allan Betts, 35, of Transit Road, Elba, is charged with reckless endangerment, 1st, endangering the welfare of a child, menacing, 2nd, criminal obstruction of breathing and harassment, 2nd. Betts was charged following the report of a domestic incident. Betts allegedly grabbed a woman by the throat and threw her to the ground. He allegedly pointed a shotgun in the direction of the woman and a child. Betts was jailed on $2,500 bail.

Tametha A. Wentland, 40, of Harlow Road, Darien, is charged with harassment, 2nd. Wentland is accused of physically contacting a victim. The incident was reported at 11:59 p.m., Saturday. Wentland was arrested by State Police.

Levi Winnie, 26, of 590 Council House Road, Basom, is charged with criminal mischief, 4th. The alleged incident was reported at 4:15 a.m., Saturday. Winnie was arrested by State Police on the Tonawanda Indian Reservation. No further details were released.

Two-car accident on Meadville Road, Alabama

A two-car accident is reported at 7202 Meadville Road at the corner with Parker Road. Alabama Fire Department and Mercy EMS are responding. There is air bag deployment, extrication is needed. A responder on scene says one victim is "pretty well pinned in. He believes his leg is broken." Another victim says "she hurts all over." Mercy Flight 6 out of Batavia is on standby. Sheriff's deputies are also heading to the scene.

UPDATE 8:24 p.m.: Mercy Flight is dispatched to the scene along with a second Mercy rig.

UPDATE 8:25 p.m.: A rescue unit out of Akron is requested to respond, mutual-aid.

UPDATE 8:55 p.m.: About three minutes ago, the man with the injured leg was extricated.

UPDATE 9:17 p.m.: I think a 32-year-old female was transported to UMMC and a younger female was taken to ECMC. The transmission has been patchy.

Field fire at Maple and Ledge roads

A field fire is reported at Maple and Ledge roads. Alabama Fire Department is responding.

UPDATE 4:53 p.m.: A responder on scene says the fire is near the gravel pit on hill or berm.

UPDATE 4:58 p.m.: The fire is out.

Two-car crash at Bloomingdale and Sand Hill roads

A two-vehicle accident with injuries is reported at Bloomingdale and Sand Hill roads, on the border of the Town of Alabama and the Tonawanda Indian Reservation. One person is said to have a mouth and arm injury, another is complaining of chest pain due to the seat belt restraint. Alabama Fire Department and Mercy medics are responding.

UPDATE 3:17 p.m.: The patients are both children.

UPDATE 3:19 p.m.: A second ambulance is requested.

UPDATE 3:54 p.m.: The patients are being transported to Women's and Children's Hospital in Buffalo.

UPDATE 4:11 p.m.: Alabama is back in service.

Car vs. tree accident on Griffen Road, driver pinned inside

An injury accident is reported at 7056 Griffen Road. A car struck a tree and the tree is in the roadway, blocking traffic. The driver is pinned inside, conscious and alert, and will require extrication. Alabama Fire Department and Mercy medics are responding. A deputy on scene reports "The subject is noncompliant, but it's not an issue because he's pinned in the vehicle."

UPDATE 12:48 p.m.: Law enforcement on scene is requesting fire police to shut down traffic at Bloomingdale and Judge roads. The driver is uncooperative with medics and officers and some sort of "medication," as opposed to alcohol, may be an issue. Mercy Flight is called and they are also requesting an engine to respond mutual aid from Pembroke / Indian Falls.

UPDATE 1:05 p.m.: State DOT workers will bring chainsaws to cut up the tree and remove it.

UPDATE 1:28 p.m.: It was decided that the patient would be transported via ground ambulance, with a Mercy Flight crew person onboard, to the Erie County Medical Center.

UPDATE 1:58 p.m.: Alabama is back in service.

Brush fire close to house on Maple Road, Alabama

A brush fire is reported to be 20 feet away from a residence at 7012 Maple Road. Alabama Fire Department is responding. The location is between Knowlesville and Ledge roads. The fire chief on scene reports it is currently confined to a hedgerow and "as long as the wind is cooperating" it should remain there while they proceed to put it out.

UPDATE 1:07 p.m.: The fire is under control.

UPDATE 1:36 p.m.: The fire is out. Alabama is back in service.

Line arcing, power outage reported on Ham Road, Alabama

A power line is reported arcing in the trees on Ham Road between Gorton and Knowlesville roads, and there are reportedly power outages in the area.

Alabama Fire is responding.

UPDATE 7:19 a.m.: National Grid requested to the scene. Two tree limbs have fallen on the line.

UPDATE 7:31 a.m.: National Grid reports 38 customers without power. Full restoration expected by 9:15 a.m.

Bail set at $100K for man accused of randomly firing gun at homes and cars

An Alabama resident is accused of driving drunk and randomly firing a rifle at homes and cars on the Tonawanda Indian Reservation on Tuesday night.

Eric A. Easton, 28, of Ham Road, Alabama, is charged with two counts of reckless endangerment, 1st, a Class D felony.

He was jailed on $100,000 bail.

On Tuesday in the late evening, deputies responded to Basom for reports of shots being fired at homes and cars.

The alleged victims appeared to be randomly selected and no injuries were reported, though property was damaged.

Easton was taken into custody late Tuesday night by Erie County deputies and was arraigned in the Town of Newstead on Thursday. Following his arraignment, he was released from Erie County custody and immediately arrested by a Genesee County deputy.

The investigation is continuing in Erie, Niagara and Genesee counties and additional charged are likely, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Report of gunshots fired from truck in Basom remains under investigation

A report Tuesday night of a drive-by trucker firing shots out his window in Basom is still under investigation, but a possible suspect has been identified, Sheriff Gary Maha said today.

The subject deputies believe may have been involved may also have been arrested for DWI in Erie County.

Maha said it will take a little time to put the whole case together because law enforcement agencies in Genesee, Erie and Niagara counties are all involved.

Person in Alabama reports being shot at by driver of truck registered in Basom

A person in the area of Crosby and Judge roads in Alabama reports being shot at with a .22-caliber rifle by someone driving a pickup truck registered to a driver on Ham Road in Basom. Law enforcement is investigating.

UPDATE: 11:45 p.m.: A deputy reports recovering a bullet. No further details available at this time.

Cornfield on fire off Lewiston Road in Alabama

A cornfield is reportedly on fire at 1534 Lewiston Road, near Church Street, in Alabama. Alabama Fire Department is en route.

UPDATE 12:26 p.m.: Fire police and an engine from Oakfield are requested. Smoke is blowing across the roadway.

UPDATE 12:37 p.m.: A tanker from Oakfield is called to the scene. Some firefighters are working at the back of the property to protect a barn. There's a brush fire nearby. Although the fire is not approaching the structure, there are strong winds blowing.

UPDATE 12:47 p.m.: Alabama command reports the fire is under control.

UPDATE 12:59 p.m.: The fire is out. The Alabama assignment is back in service.
