not meaning to offend anyone , but at a time in everyones life our eyesight will not be perfect and we should give up driving but there are those who don't want to do that on their own and we need a way to enforce it .
This is a joke right? With all that goes on on the highway now with drivers....talking on the phone..texting...changing the radio station...smoking....eating...drinking hot coffee...putting on make-up...shaving...dozing off...day dreaming...conversations with a passenger, while maintaining eye contact...screaming kids in the back seat...
NOW they want people to decide if they can see well enough to drive? OMG!!!!
First of all, the eye test performed at the DMV has always been a joke. "Can you see the red dot on the table?" Even if you had to read letters from an eye chart, they're all the same and it takes a minute to memorize before ever going to the DMV. From a reasonable point of view, employees of the DMV aren't qualified to determine whether you can see well enough to drive or not. The federal gov is about to allow Mexican truckers into this country and we're worried about something like this? If people can't see, they usually pay a visit to the eye doctor and get glasses or contacts anyway. I don't know anyone who can't see that willingly gets into a vehicle and meanders down the road.
Ed, I agree, we have bigger fish to fry. The govt. is offering to get out of a piece of our life, I'm all for it.
Let the people take ownership, if one has poor vision or other optical problems, most would seek proffesional help, as vision problems manifest into many other life activities, as well as driving.
What's next, we have to clean our windshields inside and out? Between the dirty windshield and the oxidized plastic headlights most are driving while blind already. The people who do wear glasses often wear glasses full of scratches. I'm counting on the Google self driving vehicle to save the day.
We have to re-educate our older drivers about the differences between the gas petal and the brake. A lot of them have forgotten the difference between the two and end up into store fronts and restaruants.
...The folks we see with eye-glasses in their pockets? ...Only worn when the print is too small. ...Selected after trying a couple different magnifications- a real high-tech eye examination. Yeah. Vanity or safety- what's your priority?
Doing away with the DMV eye exam is just another ploy to deprive local DMVs of revenue.
I know what you mean tp, I'm reminded everytime the starter grinds when I try to start a running car. There are too many disractions everywhere. Sometimes I can't find my glasses because I am wearing them.
C.M. it affect local optometrists too, plus the beerjoint across the street I always go to when I get new glasses. I never thought of myself as a job creator before, but I guess I am.

George... We mustn't forget the home-remedy enthusiasts who ward off cataracts with self-administered herb treatments.
