City council holds special business meeting tonight

The Batavia City Council will hold a conference meeting and a special business meeting on at 7 tonight in the Council Board Room on the second floor of the Batavia City Centre. 

The public can speak at the meeting by signing in with the City Clerk prior to the start of the meeting.

Assemblyman and senator want to meet with you Wednesday

Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R, I, C – Batavia) is hosting his regular monthly outreach meeting for Genesee County residents at the Old Courthouse in Batavia on Wednesday. Senator Michael Ranzenhofer has also been invited in order to help better assist Genesee
County residents.

The constituent outreach meeting is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Legislative Conference Room of the Old Courthouse, located at 7 Main. St. in Batavia.

Ash Wednesday service at Batavia's First Presbyterian Church

An Ash Wednesday service will be held at Batavia's First Presbyterian Church at 7 p.m.  Ashes will be placed on attendee's foreheads as a symbol of penitence and as a sign of healing role of Christians in the world.

The church is located at 300 E. Main St.

Chamber mixer is at S&S Limousine in Le Roy

This month's after-hours mixer of the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 25 at S&S Limousine.

Children's play 'Ananzi the Spider' comes to GCC

Genesee Community College Forum Players will weave a web of folklore and fun with the children's play "Anansi the Spider and the Middle Passage." Daytime school performances are scheduled for Wednesday, March 10 through Friday, March 12, with one final show for the public at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 13. All performances take place in the Stuart Steiner Theatre in the Genesee Center for the Arts.

Genesee County Funding Corp. meets Feb. 18

Forum on Thursday to discuss hospital expansion project

United Memorial Medical Center will hold a community forum to discuss its surgical expansion project. It will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday (Feb. 11) in the hospital boardroom, located at 127 North St., Batavia.

This event is open to the public and will provide an opportunity to share information and answer questions regarding the surgical expansion project.

It will create five new operating suites, 19 private recovery areas and a handicap accessible main entrance and lobby. It's expected to be completed next January.

Church holds fall registration for nursery school

Fall Registration and Open House for the 3- and 4-year-old programs at Alexander United Methodist Church Nursery School will be held on from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27 in the the church fellowship hall. Children must be 3 or 4 years old before Dec. 1 and toilet trained to be eligible. A non-refundable registration fee of $35 is required at the time of registration to secure your child's place in the program. Classes are filled on a first-come-first-serve basis. For more information call the church office at 591-1765 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Native Nigerian to speak at GCC on African culture and tradition

Genesee Community College will host Isaac Ajewole, Ph.D, a Nigerian native who will speak on the topic of African culture and tradition at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22.

The event is sponsored by the Global Education Committee and the Student Government Association and will take place at the Batavia Campus in the Conable Technology Building room T102. The cultural talk is free and open to the public.

Chamber's 38th Annual Awards ceremony set for March 6

The Genesee County Chamber of Commerce celebrates its 38th Annual Awards Ceremony on Saturday, March 6 at the Batavia Holiday Inn. This is the county’s premier event that honors businesses and individuals for their achievements in business, community service and volunteerism. 

In light of the current economy, the chamber has lowered ticket prices in the hopes this will encourage greater attendance. Tickets are $50 per person or a table of 10 for $450.00.

There will be a variety of entrees, appetizers and refreshments to choose from.

State of Genesee County Address set for 7 p.m. Feb. 3

The State of the County Address will be delivered at 7 p.m. Feb. 3 in the legislative chambers of the Old Courthouse. It's located at 7 Main St. in Batavia.

Genesee County Legislature Chair Mary Pat Hancock will deliver the address.

Byron-Bergen Winter Cheerleaders want your help to raise funds

The Byron-Bergen Winter Cheerleaders are asking you to help them raise funds to pay for tumbling and dance clinics and to buy various items the squad needs.

On Wednesday, Jan. 13 Applebee's restaurant on Lewiston Road in Batavia will donate 10 percent of the amount of your check (excluding tax and tip) to the Byron-Bergen Cheerleaders when you dine there from 4 to 7 p.m. and present a voucher.

The Genesee County Health Department is offering a free H1N1 flu clinic for the public at its offices in County Building II, located at 3837 W. Main St., Batavia. This is a walk-in clinic; no appointment is necessary.

The clinic is noon to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21.

Two-part snowmobile safety course this Tuesday and Saturday

A New York State Snowmobile Safety Course will be taught at Darien Fire Hall, Rt. 77 Darien, from 7 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday Jan. 5. Part 2 of the course is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9.

The course is free to adults and children age 10 or older. Children under 18 must take the course as required by the New York State Parks and Recreation in order to drive a snowmobile. The instructors for Snowmobile Safety Course are certified by NYS.

Anglicans invite you to Christmas Eve service

The Anglican Community Church invites everyone to its 5 p.m. Christmas Eve Service. The traditional Anglican service will include the Holy Eucharist, Lighting of the Advent Wreath and Choir.

Coffee and treats follow the service, which is held at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church at 101 Richmond Ave. in Batavia.

Connect with others at next Military Pride meeting

The Military Pride Friends and Family Network invites people to attend its next meeting, from 5:45 until about 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 15. It takes place at 2 Bank St., Office for the Aging, second floor, in Batavia.

The group's goal is to support troops and and their families in Genesee County.
