OACS to hold practice evacuation drill Thursday, May 27

Attention parents in the Oakfield-Alabama Central School District. There will be a PRACTICE evacuation drill for all students, K-12, on Thursday, May 27.

Dismissal for grades six through 12 is at 10 a.m.

Dismissal for grades K through five is at 11:30 a.m.

Forgotten Children Event

Tomorrow will be an important day for our county.  Nearly 20 agencies have worked together to bring information to the hands of individuals that may have not known where to turn when help was needed.  The Forgotten Children Event will include a display in front of the Courthouse of cut-outs representing children in foster care in Genesee County, a processional walk starting at 12:15pm from City Hall to the Courthouse, a Batavia Area Jaycees $1 Hot Dog Stand, free healthy snacks to the public, and information bags filled with brochures & program information.  This event is to raise awareness of all the children in Genesee County that live in foster care, services that are available to men, women, and children, and a chance to show support of all the wonderful people that our county has working to make this a better place to live.  A sample of agencies include Genesee County Dept. of Social Services, YWCA, Girl Scouts, RAP, Inc., Genesee Justice, GCASA, WIC, Community Action, All Babies Cherished, and Cornell Cooperative Extension.  This event is open to the public and is FREE!

Leadership Genesee's Golf & Bocce Ball Tournament June 14

Leadership Genesee’s 7th Annual Golf & Bocce Ball Tournament is at 11:30 a.m., Monday, June 14 at Terry Hills Golf Course. Gold Sponsor of the tournament is Clark Patterson Lee.

The four-person scramble that includes lunch, green fee, cart and buffet dinner is $115. Registration for Bocce Ball is $50 per person and it includes lunch and dinner. Dinner only is $30 per person.

Leadership Genesee’s 7th Annual Golf & Bocce Ball Tournament is at 11:30 a.m., Monday, June 14 at Terry Hills Golf Course. Gold Sponsor of the tournament is Clark Patterson Lee.

Now until June 1, teams may sign up for the four-person scramble that includes lunch, green fee, cart and buffet dinner for $100 per person. But after June 1, the price is $115. Registration for Bocce Ball is $50 per person and it includes lunch and dinner. Dinner only is $30 per person.

Keuka College hosts ASAP information session at GCC

Tom Rivers reads "Farm Hands" book at GoArt!

Tom Rivers, an author and longtime staff writer for the Batavia Daily News, will give a reading and presentation of his recently published book, "Farm Hands: Hard work and hard lessons from Western New York fields." A Q&A session will follow.

It will take place at GoArt!'s Seymour Place, at 201 E. Main St. in Batavia, from 7 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26.

Chicken BBQ Friday to benefit wheelchair athletic competition for veterans

Local wheelchair-bound veterans need your help to attend the 30th annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games.

Starting at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, May 21, there will be a take-out chicken BBQ at Clor's Market in Batavia to help them pay for the trip.

The "Games with Heart a Mile High" will be held this summer in Denver, Colo.

(Note: The end time is a "guesstimate," the BBQ will be sold until sold out, whenever that is.)

Venue change for Batavia Players' production of "The Importance of Being Earnest"

Batavia Players present their spring production of Oscar Wilde’s "The Importance of Being Earnest" this week. Show time is 7:30 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, May 20-22.

UMMC's Memorial Day services will be at the Jerome Center

United Memorial Medical Center's annual Memorial Day ceremony will be held at the Jerome Center, at 16 Bank St. in Batavia. It will start at 9:30 a.m. and last about an hour. The event has been relocated this year because of ongoing construction at UMMC's main site.

Chicken BBQ dinner to benefit Elba's Ryan Wolcott

From 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18, the Elba school and community will be holding a chicken BBQ to benefit Elba High School student Ryan Wolcott.

Elba and Byron-Bergen faculties, students, and friends of Ryan and the Wolcott family will be serving food in the Elba Central School cafeteria. Eat in or take out. Tickets will be $9 at the door, and $8 pre-sale (available at the school). All proceeds will go to the Wolcott family.

Hawley hosts public outreach meeting at the Old Courthouse in Batavia

Assemblyman Steve Hawley will host a public outreach meeting for Genesee County residents from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, May 21, at the Old Courthouse in Batavia. A representative for State Senator Michael Ranzenhofer will also be in attendance.

“This meeting will be an excellent opportunity for residents to express their concerns on statewide and local issues. I encourage all Genesee County residents to attend,” said Hawley in a news release.

The meeting will be in the courthouse's Legislative Conference Room. The courthouse is at 7 Main St. downtown.

Homeschool Group performs Shakespeare to benefit babies

The CARE Homeschool Group will perform "A Comedy of Errors," by William Shakespeare to benefit All Babies Cherished.

The play takes place at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 16 at the Alexander United Methodist Church on Main Street in Alexander. The suggestion donation is $5, with a maximum of $20 for families, all of which will go to the charity.

The play will last about an hour and there will be a small reception afterward.

Pep Dog Rally offers family fun at stadium

Conrads Country Stable holds Horse Show

Conrads Country Stable is hosting a Horse Show on Sunday, May 23 at their
stable on Route 33 in Corfu.
It is by the intersection of Read Road.

It is open to the public and viewing admission is free. There are many classes for both children and adults. This will be held at their indoor arena.

Free E-scrap drive at O-A School's bus garage

Here's a free opportunity to help the Earth and get rid of old electronic junk. The Oakfield-Alabama Central School and the Boys Scouts of America will hold an e-scrap recycling event on Tuesday, May 18.

It will be from 1 to 7 p.m. in the school's bus garage, located at 7001 Lewiston Road in Oakfield.

Congressman's staff member to meet with Oakfield residents

From noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, a member of Congressman Chris Lee’s staff will be available for one-on-one meetings with Oakfield residents at Oakfield Town Hall.

“These office hours provide Genesee County residents with a unique opportunity to meet with a member of my staff one-on-one, whether it be to troubleshoot interactions with federal agencies or discuss the issues of the day,” Congressman Lee said.

The town hall is located at 3219 Drake St.

'Showtime Horse Show' at Batavia Downs

The 4th annual Batavia Showtime horse show has courses for families and people of all ages featuring horse (and pony) jumpers and hunters. It will take place at the infield of the Batavia Downs Casino, at 8315 Park Rd. in Batavia, and will run from 7:30 a.m. until 5 or 6 p.m.

This is a four-day event and will last from Thursday, June 24 through Sunday, June 27.
