Notable plein air painter Kevin Feary gives live demo at DeWitt Recreation Area, hosted by Batavia Society of Artists

Did you ever want to add some bushes or cattails to a painting but thought what you were looking at was just too busy or complicated?

Well it can be done simply and it doesn't have to be daunting.

The Batavia Society of Artists is hosting artist Kevin Feary (top photo) outside at DeWitt Recreation Area on Cedar Street in the City of Batavia at 6 p.m. on Tuesday June 8th.

County offers free drive-thru anti-rabies immunization clinic at fairgrounds

The Genesee County Health Department will be hosting a FREE drive-thru anti-rabies immunization clinic on Thursday, May 20th from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Genesee County Fairgrounds (5056 E. Main St., Batavia). 

“We encourage all Genesee County residents to take advantage of this opportunity to make sure that their animals are immunized against rabies and that the vaccinations are kept up to date,” said Paul Pettit, Public Health director for Genesee and Orleans County Health Departments (GO Health).

Pavilion voters decide if Hollwedel should become school district public library

A proposition to transition Hollwedel Memorial Library, currently chartered to serve the Town of Pavilion, to a Pavilion Central School District public library will be put to a vote May 18.

An online presentation by the Hollwedel Memorial Library Board of Trustees with details about the proposition has been available and can be viewed at www.HollwedelLibrary.org/vote. The slides used in this presentation can also be picked up at the library.

Crossroads House Car Wash Memorial Fundraiser is going on now until 8 p.m. at Classy Chassy on Veterans Memorial Drive

Is your vehicle ready for a bath? Might we suggest the best wash in town? Thank you so much to Ellen Greene-Gruttadauria of Classy Chassy Car Wash, and Kim Pangrazio, for planning a car wash fundraiser to support Crossroads House!

This will be in memory of Kim's mother, Carol, who was our resident back in 2018. Carol was a local gal and made her way deep into the heart of our community. The event will take place Tuesday, May 11th at the 4120 Veterans Memorial Drive location ONLY (across from Walmart).

Free, walk-in J&J vaccine clinic at the Downs, get $20 in food & drink, chance to win concert season pass

Officials from Batavia Downs today announced they will be partnering with the Genesee and Orleans County Health Departments to host a COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic Friday, May 14th from 3-7 p.m. on-site at the Park Place Events Center.

The clinic will accept walk-ins and will be offering the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which requires a single dose to be administered ("One and done."). The FREE vaccination clinic will be open to the public, and no appointment will be necessary.

Batavia Society of Artists holds virtual hands-on watercolors demo with artist Shauna Blake

On Tuesday, May 11th, the Batavia Society of Artists will host Shauna Blake at 7 p.m. for a virtual demonstration via Zoom of watercolors. This demonstration will be hands-on and Blake will encourage you to paint along with her.

You can use whatever materials you have to paint with and she will be demonstrating tips and techniques that she uses. If you don't want to paint along, you can just attend to watch.

The demonstration is designed to be at your comfort level. Please consider joining us, even if you are unable to attend for the whole demonstration.

Ribbon-cutting ceremony at DeWitt pond for new kayaks and launch pad at the floating fishing pier

The Genesee County Department of Parks, Recreation & Forestry and Rotary Club of Batavia invite you to a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the DeWitt Recreation Area at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 7th.

It's for the new launch dock is installed on the ADA floating fishing pier at the DeWitt Recreation Area and the kayaks will be available to all recreational programs throughout the City of Batavia and the surrounding towns and villages. The stabilizing device makes it safer to enter and exit your kayak. The launch dock is free to use.

Guest Speaker at HLOM: Douglas Strong of Seattle Pacific University -- 'Perfectionist Politics: Abolitionism & Religious Tensions of American Democracy'

The Holland Land Office Museum is proud to welcome on Thursday, May 20th at 7 p.m.Douglas Strong, Ph.D., of Seattle Pacific University for the next edition of its Guest Speaker Series. The topic will be one of his major works "Perfectionist Politics: Abolitionism & Religious Tensions of American Democracy."

The work covers the antebellum movements of radical religious to battle with the conflict of slavery. Strong is the dean of Theology at SPU, but is a former resident of Western New York.

History Trivia Night at HLOM: All About May Day

The Holland Land Office Museum will be hosting its next edition of History Trivia Night @ the Museum.

Join us on Thursday, May 13 at 7 p.m. to test your knowledge of the holiday known as May Day.

May Day is an ancient pagan festival representing the coming of spring, and its modern form is a worker's holiday.

The presentation will be available both in person and via Zoom. A small group of 12 people will be allowed to attend in person.

The Alexander United Methodist Church will be holding its 2021 Vacation Bible School from July 23-25. Registration begins at 5:45 p.m. and the program runs until 8:30 each evening. The church is located at 10540 Main St., Alexander.

The theme for this year's Vacation Bible School is "To Mars and Beyond." Kids entering grades K-6 are invited to "Blast Off on an Amazing Adventure" to learn about Jesus through Bible stories, games and crafts.
