Color Me Rad 5K returns for fifth year at Darien Lake on June 10, benefits Special Olympics

By Billie Owens

Press release:

Darien Lake will turn into a wave of color beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 10, as more than a thousand runners participate in the Color Me Rad 5K, a colorful, family fun run. Returning to Darien Lake for its fifth year, the race benefits Special Olympics of New York.

The nationally recognized event is loosely based on the Hindu Festival of Colors, otherwise known as Holi; colors used are a sign of winter’s end and spring’s new beginnings. During the race through Darien Lake’s campgrounds, runners dressed in all white are showered with a rainbow of colored cornstarch, transforming their clothing, faces and hair into a colorful work of art.

Partial proceeds from the event will benefit Special Olympics of New York.

“Color Me Rad is a great family fun run that really brightens up our campground,” said Chris Thorpe, Darien Lake general manager. “More importantly, it gives us an opportunity to give back to such an important organization in our community, Special Olympics of New York.”

In addition to Color Me Rad-themed swag, participants also receive free admission and coupons to the theme park and spectators receive discount tickets.

“Special Olympics New York is very excited to be teaming up with Color Me Rad and Darien Lake again,” said Erica Raepple, Director of Development for Special Olympics – Western Region. “We have partnered for the past 5 years and through the generosity of Color Me Rad and the local community coming out to volunteer, this event has been able to help sponsor nearly 30 Special Olympic Athletes.”

Registration for Color Me Rad is $55 and free for children under 7.

Fourth annual 'Color Me Rad' is Saturday morning at Darien Lake Theme Park

By Billie Owens

From information provided by Darien Lake Theme Park:

The fourth annual "Color Me Rad" 5K -- a nationally recognized human tie-dye spectacle and run/walk -- returns to Darien Lake Saturday, May 14, rain or shine.

A total of 2,500 color-plastered participants are expected. This year, proceeds will benefit the Erie County Council for the Prevention of Alcohol and Substance Abuse.

All participating runners/walkers receive free access to Darien Lake Theme Park the day of the race. To top it off participants will also get a free T-shirt, temporary tattoo, and a Goo Guard phone case.

The course is the same 3.1-mile fun run with twice as many color stations. That means every half a mile our volunteer Color Bomb Squads will cover people from head to toe in pink, yellow, green, blue and violet.

New this year are Gel Color Stations. Participants will be colored rad all over with a cooling sensation and full coverage of spectacular colors.

The fun begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 11:30 a.m. at the theme park, located at 9993 Alleghany Road in Darien Center.

Cost is $50 per person today, $55 on Saturday. Kids' pack -- for ages under 7 -- is $15 each.

Popular Color Me Rad 5K returning to Darien Lake on June 21

By Howard B. Owens

Press release:

Back by popular demand, the Color Me Rad 5K, a nationally recognized human tie-dye spectacle and run/walk, is returning to Darien Lake for its second year bigger and better than before. More than 6,800 racers came out for the event last year, raising $15,000 for the Special Olympics of New York. This year, registration will be open to 10,000 participants so even more color-plastered racers can get in on the fun while supporting a great cause.

What makes Color Me Rad so unique is the excitement and entertainment generated by thousands of racers running through the scenic grounds at Darien Lake while a Color Bomb Squad takes aim their shirts, faces, and hair with a rainbow array of colors. A new element to the fun this year, racers will get hand-held color blasters so everyone can get in on the action.

The event is June 21.

Registration for the run/walk is now open at http://www.colormerad.com/race/buffalo.

“We strive to partner with organizations and families to create special moments that their kids will share with their kids. There’s no doubt that this is going to be a colorful memory worth sharing,” said Rod Rankin, vice president and general manager of Darien Lake.

Participants are encouraged to continue their fun after the race with a day at Darien Lake. Accommodations packages are available for registered participants at www.godarienlake.com.

"Special Olympics New York is delighted to be the beneficiary of, and to partner with, Darien Lake and Color Me Rad 5K for this tremendously fun event in June,” said Special Olympics of New York President and CEO Neal Johnson. "Color Me Rad 5K is an energetic event for all, where the volunteers have just as much fun as the participants. Whether you register to run or volunteer for the race, you'll be helping Darien Lake and Color Me Rad 5K support more than 56,000 Special Olympics athletes across the state."

More than 5,000 pounds of FDA-approved, colored cornstarch will be used during the event. In addition to “Color Bomb Squad” volunteers spread along the 3.1-mile course, walkers and runners will also be able to toss their own bags of color into the air, creating an unforgettable display of color.
