Former Batavia resident Jeff "The Buddha" Van Buren has purchased the Gambler Pro Tour and is on the road following the pool-players circuit in order to visit billiard rooms and sign up players.
“The Gambler Pro Tour is positioned to elevate the sport of billiards to the next level," says Van Buren, in his press release.
The GPT has an ambitious plan for events to take place in Western New York, Northern Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
He says the tour will attract seasoned veterans and amateurs, as well as, reach out to those who are new to billiard competition. Coverage of the events will be taped and edited for local cable broadcasting.
The Gambler Pro Tour was formed last year by Dan Dennis. Two events were held in Florida and Georgia. Ten more were planned with 10K each in added money. In May of this year, Van Buren, with expansion on his mind, struck a deal with Dennis to purchase the tour. The transfer took place with Catherine Jenkins, of the Mt. Dora, Fla.,Chamber of Commerce, recording the transaction.
Room owners will not be required to add money for semi-pro events. Many events will have no added money. This will take the lure away for seasoned players and give amateurs a chance at cashing in on events.
According to Van Buren, Gambler Pro Tour is not seeking to compete with established pool tours and does its best not to enter markets where there is already a popular tour in place like the Lone Star Tour in Texas, Great Southern Billiards Tour, Joss Tour, Tiger SE Tour, and the newly formed Action Pool Tour.
Van Buren, who now resides in Fort Myers, Fla., is the commissioner of the Pool Hustler Series, and founder of the Shooters Tour that covered Upstate New York. In addition to owning a pool room, he operated the Shooters Tour for 10 years. It grew to 1,000 players holding 30 to 40 events per year with all sponsorships coming from outside of the industry. He was well-known for holding charity events, his favorite being the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

World-renowned fencing referee Jon Moss will be appearing at EnGarde:Batavia, a local fencing school located on Harvester Avenue, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday Aug. 27.
Moss, who holds the highest possible rating for a fencing referee, is a 42-year veteran of the sport. He currently coaches at the University of New Hampshire and Tanner City Fencing Club and serves as head referee at Fencing Officials Commission.
Moss will be on hand to certify perspective referees in the sport at the area’s only fencing school, which is owned and operated by Genesee County native, Colin Dentino.
The sport of fencing requires skilled referees as the official is involved on every call and must adjudicate every action.
“It is vitally important that we train and maintain referees -- especially now since we are currently forming the Genesee Fencing League," Dentino said. "We’ll require skilled officials who are armed with the latest rules and guidelines."
After completing this clinic, and passing the referee exam, participants will be certified with the United States Fencing Association.

Dentino believes that fencing is underrated as a sport and has several benefits helping develop stamina, flexibility, strength, dexterity, hand/eye coordination, as well as physical and mental agility.

On August 22nd, 2011 BCC hosted it's annual Junior Golf Camp Invitational Tournament. Participants were either winners of their Friday tournament at golf camp in July, or other skilled players invited by Mr. Tom Tucker , the BCC teaching professional who conducts the golf camp.
The tournament consisted of nine holes played from varying tees for the Championship, "A", and "B" Flights, and six holes for the Pee Wee's "C" Flight.
The weather for the tournament was ideal as players teed off under mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the 70's.
The Championship Flight saw two players separate themselves from the pack, as Anthony Monteleone and Noah Hoy finished in regulation tied at 39. On the one hole playoff, hole 9, Noah Hoy's drive lagged behind Monteleone's, and landed in a divot in the fairway. Undaunted, Hoy stuck his next shot close to the pin and made par, which held up to win the Championship flight.
In the "A" Flight, it was a two player race between the Pflaumer brothers, Henry and Ben, with Henry prevailing 44 to 48
The "B" Flight saw a dominant performance by Ryan Douglas as he carded a 48, his nearest competitor was Bryan Moscicki with a 63.
The "C" Flight, Pee Wee's, saw the tightest field grouping of the whole tournament, with only five strokes separating the entire flight. Faith Falkowski's bid to be the first female ever to win a flight was thwarted by one stroke as she carded a 58, and both Daniel Bowen and Matt Smith each shot a 57. A chip and putt playoff ensued on the BCC putting green, and Matt Smith edged out Dan Bowen for the win.

Closest to the pin winner was: Matt Genaway
Trophies were presented to flight winners in a brief awards ceremony following the tournament, and the three overall best tournament scores from the whites will have the option of representing Batavia CC in RDGA Junior Events in 2012.

2011 Batavia Country Club Junior Golf Camp
In July, Batavia Country Club conducted their annual 4 week Junior Golf Camp,
open to youth ages 7-9 for one week, then ages 10-15 for three weeks, and a super senior division for players over age 15 and other qualified, experienced players. The Super Senior format varied from the norm in that it entailed a 45 minute lesson at 7 am, then participants played nine holes each day with a nine hole tournament on Friday.
The camp is conducted by BCC Teaching Professional and GCC Golf Coach Thomas Tucker, details about the camp may be found at the BCC website, www.bataviacc.com.

Batavia Country Club 2011 Club Championship
BCC played its 2011 Club Championship on Saturday August 20th and Sunday August 21st, 2011.
Saturday was an All American day for golf, sunny skies and pleasant temperatures, in contrast to Sunday which was pretty much miserable with slightly cooler temperatures and medium to heavy rain throughout most of the day.
In the Men's Championship Flight, Tom Wescott clung to a one shot lead (73) over Tim Tucker (74) , and two shots over Taylor Squire (75) at the close of the day.
In the Ladies Championship Flight, Roxanne Noeth took a commanding lead over Katie Joslyn.
On Sunday, Tim Tucker shot a 77 to prevail over a hard charging Matt Smith, age 17, who shot a 74 on a day when that score seemed unlikely.
Tucker shot 151 (74 - 77) to best Smith's 155 (81 - 74). Smith has had little experience with club championship tournament play and it showed on the first day, but he bounced back nicely on day two.
Tucker, on the other hand, has had plenty of experience finishing in second place eight times over the years at the BCC Club Championship, and was happy to finally get the monkey - make that the gorilla - off his back and join the family on the BCC Wall of Fame. Tucker's brother Tom had won the BCC Club Championship once, and his father Tom, the teaching pro at BCC has won it twice.
A husband and wife were also keeping it in the family as John Pflaumer won the Men's "B" Flight and his wife, Karen Pflaumer, won the Ladies "B" Flight.
Roxanne Noeth had also won the Ladies Championship in the past and was looking to get back to winning form. She did just that, winning handily by shooting a pair of rock solid 83's (166) to defeat a game but overmatched Katie Joslyn.
In other Men's Flights, Dan Grastorf 166 (87 - 79) held off Craig Kurkowski 170 (89-81) to capture the "A" Flight; John Pflaumer dominated the Men's "B" Flight 162 (80 - 82) beating Ray Smith 177 ( 89 - 88) and Bob Reyes 177 (87 - 90); newcomer to the action Roger Stone tasted victory in the "C" Flight 199 (95 - 104) just nipping Bill Sutherland 203 (101 - 102). In the Senior Flight, Marty Krause 179 (88 - 91) defeated Frank Coppola 198 (97 - 101)
In other Ladies Flights action, Wendy Caccamise shot 187 (86 - 101) to better Nancy Powers 197 (98 - 99) for the Ladies "A" Flight; and Karen Pflaumer's 222 (110 - 112) edged out Chris Thompson 229 (112 - 117) for the Ladies "B" Flight.
After the tournament, the winners were escorted to the awards banquet and ceremony in the annual March of Champions to the tune of "When The Saints Go Marching In" by musician Don Allen.
This morning was the 2nd annual Elba 5K sponsored by First Presbyterian Church of Elba.
The men's winner was Michael Richenberg, 21, with a time of 17:34. That's a new course record. Richenberg has run 21 5Ks this season and won seven of them.
The women's winner was Stephanie Schmidt, 18, with a time of 20:14.

All 24 lanes were screened (kind of like sanding) and recoated over the summer, according to manager Mike Sputore.
At one time, the Mancusos recoated the lanes only every few years, now they try to do it every year or two.
"We've noticed better scores with the more frequently we do it," Sputore said.
In an effort to spiff up the lanes even more, the walls have been repainted, the bowler's approach area resurfaced and many worn parts of the pin machinery replaced.
To help give bowlers a chance to try out the revitalized lanes, Mancuso's is offering $1 per-game specials from 4 to 9 p.m., Aug. 20 through Aug. 26.
Through August, Mancuso Bowling Center is open 3 to 9 p.m. and from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
Bob Matthews, who has always hated the idea of pro baseball in Batavia (I have no idea why), has a column in the D&C today lamenting the new rankings by Street & Smith of minor league cities.
Rochester has fallen to #20.
But also bad in Matthews' mind is that Batavia came in fairly high among 241 cities ranked.
Batavia was No. 36. I have no idea why.
The baseball Muckdogs are the only pro team, they're operated by the Red Wings and they could be on shaky ground. Batavia ranked 42nd in tenure (for how long?), 81st in attendance (no way) and 98th in economy.

Unfortunately, Street & Smith doesn't explain its attendance ranking, but it's probably based on a percentage of the host city's population, and with less than 16,000 people in the City of Batavia, the percentage for the Muckdogs is pretty good.
There are a handful of cities ranked above Batavia with only one sports franchise.

Linus Chumba, of Nyack, wins the 20th annual Jenny Kuzma Memorial Bergen 5K by running away from the field on Saturday.
Chumba led from start to finish and set a new course record with a time of 14:26. The pervious course record was 14:36 by Kyle Heath, of Syracuse.
Chumba came from New York City in search of the Bergen 5K prize money the night before the race by bus, where he told the race director that he got less than two hours of sleep.
On the women's side, Maegan Krifchin, a 2010 Syracuse graduate, won the race and also set a new course record by running 16:29, three seconds off of her fastest 5K time ever.
Krifchin was the 4th-place finisher amid the 1st-place American at the Utica Boilermaker 15K race, which had over 11,000 runners.
This year's race saw the top 50 finishers running 17:12 or faster.
The Bergen 5K is one of the most competitive 5K races in New York State and had 260 finishers on Saturday.

A record number of entrants showed up for the East Pembroke Fire Department's annual mud races. It was a perfect day for mud racing and the action was non-stop.

Batavia, NY – The 2011 New York-Penn League All-Star roster will include a league high of six players from Batavia. They will send catcher Juan Castillo, infielders Joey Bergman and David Medina, and pitchers Jonathan Cornelius, Seth Maness and Todd McInnis to the game to be held Tuesday, Aug. 16 at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Mass.
Perez was an undrafted free agent signing in 2006 and has started 27 games as catcher for the Muckdogs this season. He is currently batting .327 with eight doubles and 15 RBI’s. Castillo has also been solid behind the plate this year and has helped guide the pitching staff to a team ERA of 3.85.
Bergman, a 33rd round pick in the 2010 draft, will be making his second consecutive all-star appearance and has been among the league leaders in hitting all season. Bergman currently ranks fifth in the league in hitting, with a .320 batting average, to go along with eight doubles and 17 RBIs.
David Medina was signed by the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in 2006 and is enjoying a stellar first season with the Muckdogs. His seven home runs are tied for fourth in the league and his 33 runs scored are third in the league. Medina who plays a mixture of first base and outfield, was selected as a first baseman for this year’s squad.
A 24th round pick out of Florida Tech, Cornelius is 1-2 with 37 strikeouts in 11 outings for the Muckdogs. The left-hander’s ERA of 2.85 ranks him ninth in the league and hitters are only hitting .194 against him, good for second in the league.
St. Louis drafted Maness out of Eastern Carolina in the 11th round of the 2011 draft. He has appeared in nine games and has a 0-0 record with a 0.52 ERA. In 34.2 innings of work, he has struck out 27 batters and only allowed 20 hits.
McInnis, a 25th round pick out of Southern Mississippi, is third in the league with 2.12 ERA and a record of 3-2. His WHIP of just 0.92 leads the league and batters are hitting just .208 against him.
Batavia holds the fourth-place spot in the Pinckney Division with a record of 24-26. This marks the third time in four years that the Muckdogs have sent at least five players to the All-Star game. The Muckdogs sent five players to the 2008 All-Star game, three in 2009 and five in 2010.
